Verda Marie Davis Gwaltney
August 18, 1928 - January 19, 2006

Verda Marie Gwaltney, age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at the William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant with Mr. Mark Christian, Mr. Jeffrey Gritton, and Mr. Charles Marckel, II officiating. Interment will follow in Chippewa Township cemetery, Isabella County, Michigan.
Friends may gather with the family on Sunday, January 22 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant and again on Monday, January 23 from 9-10 a.m. at the First Church of Christ.
Verda Marie suggested memorial contributions in her memory be made to the First Church of Christ, the Great Lakes Christian Academy, or the Rock Lake Christian Assembly. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home and the First Church of Christ.
Verda Marie was born on Saturday, August 18, 1928 in Chippewa Township, Isabella County the daughter of Perry Homer and Magdalena Elizabeth (McNeal) Davis. She married Charles Gwaltney on July 1, 1978 in Mt. Pleasant. Charles preceded her in death on February 5, 1999. Verda Marie was a lifetime area resident. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant. She retired from Central Michigan University as an advisor in financial aid after 35 ½ years of service.
Survivors include a niece, Gail Ann and Bob McDonald, a nephew, Larry and Monica Davis, and a niece in law, Judy Davis, all of Mt. Pleasant; ten grand nieces and nephews; fifteen great grand nieces and nephews; three step sons: Patrick and Antonia Gwaltney, Michael and Rita Gwaltney, and Timothy and Natalie Gwaltney, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; two step daughters: Patricia and Earl Johnson of Bloomington, Indiana, and Sherie and George Raisor of Mooresville, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; and several great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law: Rosetta Fritz, Carrie Gwaltney, Alice Gwaltney, and Tressie Gwaltney, all of Indiana; numerous nieces and nephews.
Verda Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; both parents; a brother Vernell Davis; a sister Edith Davis; and a nephew Lee Davis.

Chris V. Myers
September 21, 1917 - January 18, 2006

Chris V. Myers, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at his daughters home in St. Johns, Michigan.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Helms Funeral Home with Mr. Jeffrey Gritton officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery.
Friends may gather with the family on Friday, January 20, 2006, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Church of Christ. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Chris was born on Friday, September 21, 1917 in Grover Hill, Ohio the son of Christian Shank and Villa (Clevenger) Myers.
He married Donna Marie Jones on May 31, 1969 in Mt. Pleasant. She preceded him in death on February 7, 1999. He was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area since 1945.
Chris was a construction worker, carpenter, and painter working at CMU for thirteen years. He was a life member of the Mt. Pleasant Borley-Hanel VFW Post 3033 after having been a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the South Pacific. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golf and eating out.
He is survived by his step children: Marilyn Horning of St. Johns and Richard Rauch of Riverdale; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren; a brother, Robert Myers of Shepherd, a sister, Bertha (Paul) Spencer of Mt. Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his wife, both parents, daughter Shirley Esch, brothers: Ralph, Daniel, Elmer, Amos, Vernon, and Lloyd; and sisters: Flossie, Mildred, and Catherine; son-in-law Arnold Horning, daughter-in-law Nancy Rauch, and a great granddaughter Camille.

Virgilene Ardis Owen
September 2, 1931 - January 18, 2006

Virgilene Owen, age 74, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at her home with her family at her side.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary cemetery.
A Vigil Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Helms Funeral Home.
Friends may gather with the family at Helms Funeral Home on Friday, January 20, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 8-9 a.m. at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mt. Pleasant Parkinson Support Group or Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.
Virgilene was born on Wednesday, September 2, 1931 in Rosebush, Michigan the daughter of Henry and Delila (Jenkins) Bower.
She was a lifetime resident of the Mt. Pleasant area. Virgilene was retired from the custodial staff at CMU after many years of service. Virgilene was a member of Sacred heart Church, the Mt. Pleasant Parkinson Support Group, and the Commission on Aging. She enjoyed crafts, painting, quilting, sewing, and playing cards. She was devoted to her family, her children and grandchildren.
Virgilene is survived by her children: Randy (Brenda) Owen of Atica, MI, Linda (Sid) Benaske of Mt. Pleasant, Rhonda (Joseph) Owens of Mt. Pleasant, Rodney (Jeannette) Owen of Leslie, MI, Robin (Ed) McQuaid of Mt. Pleasant, Ricky (Sandy) Owen of Mt. Pleasant, Ray Owen of Mt. Pleasant, and Dennis (Donna) Owen of Huntington Beach, CA; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, brothers: Anthony (Pat) Bower, Gary (Linda) Bower, Terry (Mary) Bower; and sister, Bonnie (Hurley) Kampf.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Dan Bower, and sister, Ruth Bower.

Connie A. Rhode
January 7, 1958 - January 15, 2006

Connie Ann Rhode passed away January 15, 2006 at her home. Connie spent most of her life in the Mt. Pleasant area. She was employed by Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland, as a Housekeeper for 18 years.
Connie was a member of the Oil City Assembly of God Church. She loved being a Mom, quilting, camping and spending time with her family.
Her funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at 1:00 P.M. at Helms Funeral Home with Pastor James Reamsma officiating. Interment was at Kelly cemetery, Midland County, Michigan.
Friends gathered with the family on Tuesday January 17, 2006 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home.
The family suggested memorial contributions be made to the Family or Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund. Envelopes were available at the funeral home.
Connie was born on January 7, 1958, the daughter of Jacob Vollmer and Alice Timmer in Pontiac, Michigan. She married Edward H. Rhode on May 10, 1975 in Oil City, Michigan.
Connie is survived by her husband of 30 years, Edward H. Rhode; her son, Theodore E. Rhode and special friend, Shannon Dennis, of Beaverton; daughter, Cynthia A. (Chad) Moinet of St. Johns; a very special great niece, Dani Rae Carson; her mother, Esther Vollmer; two brothers: James Koss (Dana Rudoni) of Shepherd, and Daniel Koss of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters: Helen (Scott) Rydman of Coleman, and Esther (Lee) Uphold of Mt. Pleasant; brothers-in-law; Larry (Nikki) Rhode, Ron, Randy, and Joe Rhode; sisters-in-law: Roberta Foster, and Carol (Russ) Zilska; her mother-in-law, Deloris Rhode; and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Vollmer, birth mother, Alice Timmer, and father-in-law, Ferdinand Rhode.

Norman F. Curtiss, Jr.
December 30, 1923 - January 12, 2006

Norman F. Curtiss, Jr., age 82, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2006 with his family at his side at Central Michigan Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 10 a.m. Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Mr. Mark Christian officiating. Interment will follow in Union cemetery, Winn, Michigan.
Friends may gather with the family at Helms Funeral Home on Friday, January 13, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Isabella County Commission on Ageing Food With Friends or Meals on Wheels Programs, or the First Church of Christ Building Fund. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.
Norman was born on Sunday, December 30, 1923 in Fremont Township, Isabella County, Michigan the son of Norman F. and Lucy (Henderson) Curtiss, Sr.
He married Barbara Jean Funnell on December 13th, 1946 in Lansing, Michigan. He lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant and Winn area. Norm was a farmer most of his life, while also working for Leonard Refineries for many years. He was a self employed builder for many years, and was a man who truly enjoyed working. He also enjoyed his grandchildren, the outdoors, family trips, dancing, and being with friends. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant.
Norman is survived by: five children: David (Sherron) Curtiss, Norman F. (Joanne) Curtiss III, Thomas (Deanna) Curtiss, Shirley (Robert) Bick, Karen (Ronald) Wilcox, all of Mt. Pleasant; seventeen grandchildren: David John, Scott, Michael, Amy, Lisa, Eric, Bubba, Kristin, Michelle, Kimberly, Thomas Jr., and Benjamin Crutiss; Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Stacy Bick; and Katie and Christopher (Bucky) Wilcox; and three great grandchildren: Ashley, Nicholas, and Makaylee; three sisters: Ilene Christensen, Winnifred Koval, and Vera and Hugh Kniffen; and a sister-in-law: Pearl Curtiss.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Curtiss on March 17th, 2005, his parents, three brothers: Dwayne, Stanford, and Clifford Curtiss, and two sisters: Helen Renick, and Mary Faust.

David Lee Millard
September 21, 1950 - January 9, 2006

David Lee Millard, age 55, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Monday, January 9, 2006 at Central Michigan Community Hospital with his family at his side.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Helms Funeral Home with Pastor James Reamsma officiating.
Friends may gather with the family on Saturay, January 14, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
David was born on Thursday, September 21, 1950 in Pontiac, Michigan the son of Walter Hunt and Bertha Mae (Modlin) Millard.
David was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area for the past twenty-nine years. He worked as a grinder at U.S. Marble for the past twenty-five years. He enjoyed NASCAR, mechanical tweaking on autos and road trips.
David is survived by his children: Tammie (Stacy) Kucharek of Grayling, MI, Robert (Rachael) Millard of Gaylord, MI; brother: Fred (Cathy) Millard of White Lake, MI; sisters: Ruth (John) Jones of California, Mary (Jerry) McDonald of Oregon, Carol Snover of Tennessee, and Linda (Ron) Smades of Mt. Pleasant, MI; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by both parents, and two sisters Phyllis Swan and Pamela Hood

Betty Jane Mellor
March 22, 1923 - January 5, 2006

Betty Jane Mellor, age 82, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, January 05, 2006 at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 9, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Helms Funeral home with Rev. James Simcox officiating.
Friends may gather with the family on Saturday, January 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Sunday, January 8, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home.
Betty was born on Thursday, March 22, 1923 in Blackstone, Massachusetts the daughter of Harold C. and Alice (Carnoe) Kelley. As a child she lived in Valley Field, Québec for about twelve years.
She married Elliott Mellor in July 1946. They lived in West Warwick, Rhode Island, Derby, New Haven and Stamford, Connecticut. She and her husband built a house in Pound Ridge, New York and resided there six years. After her husbands passing, she and her parents, along with the children, moved to Hialeah, Florida and then on to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in 1962. She moved back to Rhode Island for several years to take care of her aging parents and an aunt, and then back to Mt. Pleasant in 1991. Betty was well known for her quick wit and straight forward honesty. She enjoyed dancing and had the chance to dance with Henry Fonda at a naval base function at Newport, Rhode Island. She made friends easily and was proud of her New England heritage. Once a New Englander always a New Englander as she used to say.
Betty is survived by three sons: Gary of Grand Ledge, Glen of Mt. Pleasant, and Michael of Lincoln Park; a grandson: Michael; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elliott, in March 1961; and brother, Rodman.

Alta Leona (Mumford) Mathews
May 25, 1912 - January 2, 2006

Alta Leona (Mumford) Mathews, age 93, of Greensboro, North Carolina passed away on Monday, January 2, 2006 at Moses Cone Extended Health Care in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Earl Scott officiating. Interment will be in West Wheatland cemetery, Remus, Michigan.
Friends may gather with the family on Friday, January 6, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Helms Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Wheatland Church of Christ in Remus, Michigan. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
She was born on Saturday, May 25, 1912 in Remus, Michigan the daughter of Joseph and Lula Mae (Lett) Mumford.
Alta married Leo E. Matthews in Remus, Michigan. Alta was a lifetime resident of the Mt. Pleasant, Michigan area. Moving to Greensboro in 2003 to live with her granddaughter. She was an active lifetime member of the Wheatland Church of Christ in Remus, Michigan, serving on the board of directors and other groups at the church.
She is survived by two Granddaughters Melissa (Brian) Newman of Greensboro, NC., Monique Berry (Bryan Jacobs) of Mission Viejo, CA. Two Grandsons, Jeffrey Berry of Las Vegas, NV, Jerrad Berry of Mecosta, MI. Great Grandchildren, Brittany Lynn Mathews Justice and Jamison Ty Newman of Greensboro, NC., One Brother Arthur Wayne (Joanne) Mumford of Timberhill, FL. and one Sister-in-law Lillian Mumford of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and many nieces and nephews and others who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her Father Joseph Mumford, Her Mother Lula Mae (Lett) Mumford, Two Sisters; Stella (Mumford) Brown and Bernice (Mumford) Bracy. One Brother Basil Mumford. Husband Leo Edgar Mathews, Daughter, Opal Elaine Mathews. One Sister-in-law Ida Mae (Mathews) Cross and Brother-in-law Roscoe Cross.
