June 22, 1935 - April 24, 2005

Keith E. VanHorn, 69, of Weidman, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services for Keith will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ron Vredeveld officiating. Interment will follow in Decker cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 26th, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Keith was born June 22, 1935, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Clyde and Helen (Wilmot) VanHorn. He married Murna Whitscell in 1966 in Mecosta Co. Keith was a Case Manager at the Regional Center from 1958 to 1984. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1955. Keith was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.

Keith is survived by his wife, Murna; brothers, Edward (Elaine) Sheldon of Ohio and Evert (Jill) Sheldon of Clare; sisters, Annabelle Sheldon of Mt. Pleasant and Margaret (Jerry) Miller of Indiana; step-sister, Mary (Darrell) Parks of Mt. Pleasant, Laurabelle Lyons of Mt. Pleasant and Betty (Henry) Ryckman of Riverdale.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James VanHorn; step-brother, Charles Sheldon and Walter VanHorn; sisters, Deloris Grayless, Sherry Harless, Donna Jacobs and Elizabeth Wilmot.

Earl, Jeffrey Joseph
March 22, 1983 - April 21, 2005

Jeffrey Joseph Earl, age 22, of Lake, Michigan, passed away on Thursday April 21, 2005, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 25, 2005, at 11 a.m. from St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Winn, Michigan, with Deacon John Wilberding officiating. Interment will take place in St. Leo’s cemetery. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 23, from 7–9 p.m. and Sunday, April 24, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Monday, April 25, from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Jeffrey was born March 22, 1983, in Mt. Pleasant, MI, the son of Stephen Earl and Roxann Pung Earl. Jeff graduated from Beal City High School in 2002. He was active with the Garfield Twp. Fire Department and Special Olympics. He enjoyed hunting, building car models, cross stitching, playing video games and go’in places.

Jeff is survived by his mother, Roxann (Jonathan) Cummings of Lake; father, Stephen (Teresa) Earl of Remus; brother, Pvt. 1st Class Jason L. Earl of Weidman; sister, Melinda “Mindy” Earl of Lake; grandparents, Ray and Ruth Pung of Weidman, Donna Earl of Elwell; half-sister, Amanda Cummings; step-sister, Christine Raymo of Mecosta; step-brothers, Brian, Ryan, and Edward Quick of Remus.

Jeff was preceded in death by his grandfather Lewis Earl.

French, Marjorie M.
July 3, 1916 - April 18, 2005

Marjorie M. French, 88 of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Lansing, died Monday, April 18, 2005 at Tendercare Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant. It was her wish to die sober and she succeeded.

Marjorie, along with her twin sister, Margaret, was born on July 3, 1916 in Romeo, Michigan to Alexander and Gail (Plum) Braidwood. She married Edwin French in 1939 in Almont, Michigan and together they had two daughters; Judith and Gail.

Marjorie spent a good deal of her life befriending men and women who were recovering from alcoholism through Alcoholics Anonymous in Lansing, Michigan. It was through AA that she found sobriety and served as a sponsor to many friends. In the mid 1980’s she was the recipient of the Max Glass Award by the National Council of Alcoholism-Lansing Chapter for the outstanding impact she had on the lives of others who were also working to recover.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Edwin, her brother Andrew, and her special uncle, Fred Braidwood. She is survived by her two daughters and son in laws; Judy and Sid Smith and Gail and George Torreano, living in Mt. Pleasant; One granddaughter and her husband, Stacia and Andrew Feinberg of Jupiter, FL; three grandsons; Steve Smith of Sandpoint, Idaho, Matt Torreano of Marquette, MI and Joe Torreano of Salt Lake City, Utah; her twin sister, Margaret Eisen of Farmington Hills, along with many special nieces and nephews and numerous AA friends whose lives were touched and saved by her.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 11am from the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Visitation will be held at the Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2005. Burial will take place at that Metamora cemetery in Metamora, Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Marge to one of two organizations. The first being Alcoholics Anonymous, c/o Dan LaFave, 1235 Climax Street, Lansing, MI 48912. The funds will be used to purchase AA books for individuals who are recovering from addictions. The other organization you may contribute to in Marge’s name is Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes are available for both organizations through the Clark Funeral Chapel.

Schneider, George A.
November 29, 1930 - August 20, 2005

George A. Schneider, 74, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or Veterans Memorial Library. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

George was born on November 29, 1930 in Flint the son of Adam and Marie (Voelker) Schneider. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. George married Shirley Keehn on November 16, 1951 in Marion. He was an English professor for Central Michigan University from 1966 until 1985.

George is survived by his wife, Shirley and son, Steven (Linda) Schneider of Portland, Maine.

George was preceded in death by his parents.

Ross, Ella F.
May 29, 1926 - August 17, 2005

Ella F. Ross, 79, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Tawas City, MI passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at Isabella County Medical Care Facility.

Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Services. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Ella was born on May 29, 1926 in Dahme, Germany, the daughter of Rudolf and Frieda (Friedrich) Witzke. She married Philip Edwin Ross on August 23, 1946 in Tawas City, MI.

Ella is survived by her husband, Philip Ross; children, Terry (Jim) Krause of Hanover Park, IL, Becky (Rod) Michael of Sault Ste Marie and Mark (Shawna) Ross of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Joe and Andrew Krause, Kristi Bennett, Melinda Campbell and Katy and Christian Ross; great-grandchildren, Allyson Krause, Danny Sanchez, Hayley Bennett, Steven Bennett, Madeleine Campbell and Leyton Campbell and one sister, Frieda Ahonen.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Kidd, Irving William
October 14, 1915 - August 12, 2005

Irving William Kidd, 89, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on August 12, 2005 at Maplewood Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 202 S. Elizabeth St. in Mt. Pleasant, on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Susan Olson officiating. Interment will follow in the Trinity United Methodist Memorial Garden. Following the memorial service visitation and luncheon will be held at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the Church or Clark Funeral Chapel.

Irving was born on October 14, 1915 in Utica, MI the son of William and Junia (Lathers) Kidd. He earned his bachelors degree from Ypsilanti Normal College and received a masters from Michigan State University. Irving married Eunice Reeves on August 28, 1940 in Utica. He worked in the Arts Department for Mt. Pleasant Public Schools from 1945 until 1977. After retiring he was a prolific painter and illustrated two books with many of his paintings displayed in shows in the area. Irving was a member of MEA, the United Methodist Church and the Wesley Foundation. He also taught Sunday school and was the choir director. Irving loved to fish, camp and was known for his strong tenor voice.

Irving is survived by his wife, Eunice of Mt. Pleasant; children, Karen (Bill) Wilber of Diamondale, MI, Arthur (Beth) Kidd of Grand Marais, MN and Charles (Ann) Kidd of Gilbertville, MA; six grandchildren; Five Great-Grandchildren and sisters, Gladys Montei of Toledo, Ohio and Marjorie Appleby of Norwalk, CT.

Irving was preceded in death by his son, Clifford Kidd in 2003; brothers, Edgar and Robert and sister, Lucille Haupert.

May, Clifford Howard
January 6, 1921 - August 8, 2005

Clifford Howard May, 84, of Lake Isabella, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2005, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services for Clifford will be held on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Speilman Mortuary in St. Paul, Minnesota with Rev. Dr. Mark Winkler officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12th from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment will follow in Fort Snelling National cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post 3033. Envelopes will be abailable at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Clifford was born January 6, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of William and Anna (Shaile) May. He married Carol Schilling in November of 1944 in St. Paul, MN. Clifford was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force serving in WWII and the Korean Conflict retiring on September 17, 1966 after 23 ˝ years of service. He was a member of the Wisconsin chapter of Trout Unlimited and a life member of the VFW in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Clifford enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Clifford is survived by his son, Greg (Terrie) May of Lake Isabella; grandchildren, Tracey (David) Kall of Mt. Pleasant; Kris May of Canton; Becky Chamberlian of Wyondotte; Shaun (Sarah) May of Canton and Nicole May of Wayne; great-grandchildren, Bret; Cody; Katelyn; Kamron; Collin and Hunter; sisters, Drucilla (George) Koerner and Shirley Louden both of Minnesota.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Carol in 1994; son, Paul May in March 1996; brother, Vern May and brother-in-law, Harry Louden.

Metcalf, Rita Kay
August 26, 1946 - August 5, 2005

Rita Kay Metcalf, age 58, of Weidman passed away on Friday, August 5, 2005, at her home.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 8, 2005, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel. Friends may call on Sunday, August 7, 2005, from 4-8 p.m. and on Monday, August 8, at 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorial Donations may be made to the Community Cancer Services. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Rita was born August 26, 1946, in Midland, MI, the daughter of Leo and Marge (Barrick) Caffery. Rita grew up in Coleman where she graduated from Coleman High School. On September 4, 1963, Rita married Darrel Lee Metcalf in Mt. Pleasant. Rita worked for Central Michigan Community Hospital for 15 years as a Pharmacy Tech. Rita loved people and camping. She also enjoyed flowers, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Rita is survived by her husband, Darrel of Weidman; children, Paula Gillis of Mt. Pleasant and Ricky Metcalf of Weidman; grandchildren, Erika, Zackery, Megen, Breann, Levi Metcalf, and Dylan Gillis. Rita is also survived by her sister Mary Mettert of Coleman.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Marge Caffery, her brother Joe Caffery, and her son David Metcalf.

Burr, Franklin
August 8, 1924 - August 3, 2005

Franklin Burr, 80, of Alma, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2005, at Wilcox Nursing Home.

Funeral services for Franklin will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2005, at 11 a.m from Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Obrecht of the Mt. Pleasant Church of the Nazarene officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 5, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Church of the Nazarene. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Franklin was born August 8, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Edwin and Pearl (Raymond) Burr. He enjoyed fishing.

Franklin is survived by his sisters Dorothy Cook of Coleman, Opal Linton of Midland, Donna Koval (Steve) of Alma.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ray Burr, Leon Burr, Roy Burr and sister Erma Mallay.

Purtill, Ronald E
January 18, 1951 - July 29, 2005

Ronald E. Purtill, 54, of Alma passed away on Friday, July 29, 2005 at home.

Per Ronald’s wishes cremation has taken place. Services will be held at a later date.

Ronald was born on January 18, 1951, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Edward and Doris (Packer) Purtill. He married Rita Fox on September 29, 1972 in Mt. Pleasant.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Rita of Alma; Daughter, Lisa (Tim) Deming of St. Louis and grandchildren, Emily and Ethan Deming of St. Louis.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents.

McCoy, Jess Arthur
March 21, 1926 - July 28, 2005

Jess Arthur McCoy, 79, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2005, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass for Art will be held on Monday, August 2, 2005, at 11 a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvary cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 30, 2005, from 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday, August 1, 2005, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel and on Monday, August 2, 2005, from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. A prayer service will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2005, at 8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Academy Foundation or Michigan Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and the church.

Art was born on March 21, 1926 in Roseville, MI, the son of Palmer and Ellen (Pagel) McCoy. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Art married Kathleen Clara Reihl on June 18, 1949, in Beal City. He worked for Dow Chemical as a pipefitter, welder and master craftsman for 35 years before retiring in 1982. Art was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Moose Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping, traveling to Las Vegas, working around the house and on family projects.

Art is survived by his wife, Katie; children, Richard (Diana) McCoy of Mt. Pleasant, Jeanette (Greg) Haggart of Rosebush, Shelly (Jim) Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, Debra Schafer of Houghton Lake, Mark (Kim) McCoy of Mt. Pleasant, Julie (Mark) Cole of Mt. Pleasant, David (Marsha) McCoy of Mt. Pleasant, Alan (Shelly) McCoy of Clare and James McCoy of Pasadena; twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Art was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard McCoy.

Way, Steven
May 17, 1954 - July 26, 2005

Steven Way, 51, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, with his family by his side. He lived with cancer for several years always maintaining his determination, gentle spirit, and sense of humor.

A memorial service for Steven will be held on Friday, July 29, 2005 at 11 a.m. from First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Boley officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28 from 6-8 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Chapel and on Friday, July 29 from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial contribution may be made to Lake Louise Christian Community or The Way Children Education Fund. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel and at the church.

Steven was born May 17, 1954, in Jackson, MI, the son of Lewis and Joyce (Huff) Way. He married Lura Lee Beynon on July 31, 1983. Steve was a graduate of Central Michigan University and worked as a computer topographer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. His hobbies included caving, rock climbing, story telling, collecting and participating in all family activities.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lura; children, Lindsay and Spencer all of Mt. Pleasant; parents, Lewis and Joyce Way; cherished Hazel “Nanny” Huff; his sister, Linda (Michael) Whitney all of Jackson; brothers, Bryon (Elisa) Way of Raleigh, NC and Matthew Way of Jackson; Additional survivors include aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Ted Psychas; and grandparents Gerald Huff and Paul and Marion Way.
