Orlena R. Manger

March 8, 1910-Oct. 22, 2002

Orlena R. Manger, 92, of Monroe died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Alterra Sterling House of Monroe. She had been ill for 2 years.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rupp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 6. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and at 11 at St. John Catholic Church. The Rev. Terrence Kerner, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Erie.

Born March 8, 1910, in Ida, she was the daughter of Lines and Laura (Cousino) Montri. She married Joseph Trabbic Aug. 20, 1929, at St. Mary Church. He died March 17, 1934. She then married Michael F. Manger Sept. 18, 1937, at St. Mary Church. He died June 16, 1984.

Surviving are four sons, Michael F. (Patricia) of Temperance and James M. (Mickey), John E. (Margaret) and Joseph L. Manger, all of Monroe; a daughter, Marvel (Bernard) Felder of Monroe; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Owen David McPhail

Aug. 31, 1940-Oct. 4, 2002

BILOXI, Miss. – Owen David McPhail, 62, of Biloxi, formerly of Newport, died Oct. 4.

Services were held Oct. 8 in Biloxi. Jackson County Funeral Service, Moss Point, Miss., was in charge of arrangements.

Born Aug. 31, 1940, in Detroit, he was the son of John and Marie (Bossee) McPhail. He made his home with Rose Cardinali.

Surviving are four sons; three daughters; a sister, Faith Ann McPhail of California; a sister-in-law, Pat McPhail of Monroe, and several grandchildren.

Edwin R. (Slim) Dotson

April 7, 1940 – Oct. 21, 2002

LUNA PIER – Services have been set for Edwin R. (Slim) Dotson, 62, of Luna Pier, who died Monday at home as the result of a fire.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the David R. Jasin Funeral Home, Toledo, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Terry J. Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Forest cemetery.

Born in Toledo April 7, 1940, he was the son of Raymond and Minnie Dotson. His wife, Eileen, survives.

In addition to his wife, surviving are three sons, Norman S., Kevin R. and Michael J.; a daughter, Michelle L. Dotson, and five grandchildren.

Donald A. Vandervoort

Dec. 19, 1954-Oct. 22, 2002

BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP -- Donald A. Vandervoort, 47, of Brownstown Township died of natural causes Tuesday.

Friends may call from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at John Molnar Funeral Home. He will lie in state from 10 until services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Grace Temple, Taylor. Bishop Gary J. Harper will officiate. Burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park, Huron Township.

Born Dec. 19, 1954, in Monroe, he was the son of Clyde and Bernita (Green) Vandervoort.

Surviving are his parents of Monroe; his wife, Deborah; a son, Kamil Shammout; two daughters, Oriane Shammout and Carlie Murphy, and a brother, Larry.

Elizabeth M. Emerson

March 25, 1933-Oct. 23, 2002

Elizabeth M. Emerson, 69, of Monroe died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in her home. She had suffered from acute lymphocytic leukemia and had been in poor health for 14 months.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight and from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home, where members of St. Michael Altar Society will recite the rosary at 2 p.m. Friday. A scripture service will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, also at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at 10 at St. Michael Catholic Church. The Rev. Stephen Rooney, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Born March 25, 1933, in Monroe, she was the daughter of James and Lillian (Gillenkirk) Marchese. She was married, by the Rev. Stanley Fedewa, to Glenn M. Emerson Aug. 21, 1954, at St. Michael Church. He died Jan. 11, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy M. (Rhonda) of Monroe and Joseph M. of Toledo; four daughters, Becky M. (Sam) Gutierrez, Maria A. (Terry) Pursley and Tina M. Emerson, all of Monroe, and Karen M. (Jerry) Wagner of Ida; a sister, Janet (William) Fetterly of Monroe; six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Howard J. Harmon Sr.

Feb. 27, 1927-Oct. 22, 2002

Services have been set for Howard J. Harmon Sr., 75, of Monroe, who died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in his home after a lengthy illness.

There will be no visitation. Allore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jacque-line Holds-worth, co-pastor of the church, will officiate.

Born Feb. 27, 1927, in Monroe, he was the son of Orville and Mattie (Smith) Harmon. He married JoAnn Haedicke Dec. 28, 1988, at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, surviving are a son, Howard (Rebecca) Harmon Jr. of Olathe, Kan.; a daughter, Lisa (Willie) Soto, of Monroe; two brothers, Al (Cal) of Gainesville, Fla., and Ike (Karen) of Toledo; a sister, Donna Foos-Billings of Montana, and three grandchildren.

Nanette M. Hubsky-DeGarmo

Aug. 27, 1948-Oct. 11, 2002

ROCKWOOD – Nanette M. Hubsky-DeGarmo, 54, of Rockwood died at 4 p.m. Friday at Henry Ford Hospital, Wyandotte, after a long illness.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Ford Chapel of the Allore Martenson Funeral Home, Rockwood. She will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday funeral services at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Trenton. Rev. John Melcher will officiate. Burial will be in Ferndale cemetery, Riverview.

Born Aug. 27, 1948 in Wyandotte, she was the daughter of George and Patricia E. (Rushlow-O’Bar) Hubsky. She married James U. DeGarmo on March 31, 1973 in Allen Road Missionary Church.

She was a homemaker, who enjoyed cooking. She graduated from Carlson High School in 1966 and had a degree from Monroe County Community College and a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her mother, Patricia O’Bar of Rockwood; two brothers, George of Flat Rock and Tim of Rockwood; and two sisters, Kristine (John) Lichy of Woodhaven and Sherry (Stephen) Chapman of Rockwood.

Charles Ann Rafko

Oct. 27, 1917-Oct. 11, 2002

Services have been set for Charles Ann Rafko, 84, of Monroe, who died at 11:35 a.m. Friday at Mercy Memorial Hospital. She had been in poor health since January, seriously ill since June and hospitalized since Oct. 3.

Friends may call from 1 to 6 today at Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. John Schneider of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

Born Oct. 27, 1917, in Hacoda, Ala., she was the daughter of Arthur and Nancy (Miller) Simmons. She married George (Buck) Rafko Oct. 4, 1945, in Eufaula, Ala. He died July 15, 1995.

The Rafkos moved to the Monroe area in 1947 from Gilroy, Calif.

Mrs. Rafko was a switchboard operator for Mercy Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She was a high school graduate and attended two years of business college.

She was a member of Calva-ry United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry (Ernest) Portillo of Monroe and Danielle (Roger) Smith of Willis; two granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.

Helen R. Smith

Oct. 13, 1919-Oct. 11, 2002

Services have been set for Helen R. Smith, 82, of Monroe, who died at 6:45 p.m. Friday at TenderCare of Monroe. She had been ill for 11 months.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home. She will lie in state from noon until 1 p.m. Monday funeral services at the LaSalle Presbyterian Church, LaSalle. Rev. E. Jack Lemon will officiate. Burial will be in Erie Union cemetery, Erie.

Born Oct. 13, 1919 in Monroe, she was the daughter of Arthur and Rosa M. (Albright) Adler. She married Vermont H. Smith in 1937 in Monroe. He died on Aug. 19, 1984.

She attended Wood School and was a member of LaSalle Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a son Jerry L. (Sharon) of LaSalle; two daughters, Joyce A. (Richard) Staelgraeve of Newport and Helen M. Elden of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, Alfred of Monroe; 15 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

Verba May Chapman

Dec. 28, 1921-Oct. 9, 2002

VENICE, Fla. – Verba May Chapman, 80, of Venice, whose son lives in Rockwood, died Wednesday at Bon Secours Venice Hospital.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Price Funeral Home, Troy, where services will be held at noon Tuesday. The Rev. Terry Cashmer of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Southgate, will officiate. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial cemetery, Troy.

Among her survivors is a son, Dennis (Annette).

John F. Lamour

Oct. 1, 1935 – Oct. 13, 2002

John F. Lamour, 67, co-owner and operator of Lamour Printing Co. in downtown Monroe for almost 50 years, a historian of the River Raisin and Great Lakes and an active fund-raiser and alumni volunteer for St. Mary Catholic Central High School, died of acute leukemia at 1:40 a.m. Sunday at Toledo Hospital.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Rupp Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a litany service by the Knights of Columbus. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Timothy F. Babcock, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Born Oct. 1, 1935, in Monroe, he was the son of Julien and Beatrice (Flory) Lamour.

Surviving are a brother, Robert J. (Ann) of Monroe, and a sister, Marie (Nick) Orastian of Grand Rapids.

Paul (Ed) Brown

Oct. 5, 1920-Oct. 22, 2002

MILAN -- Paul (Ed) Brown, 82, of Milan died Tuesday night at Heartland Health Care Center, Ann Arbor.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from noon until services at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home. The Rev. Vern R. Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Marble Park cemetery, where military honors will be conferred.

Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Belleville, he was the son of Paul F. and Emma L. (Krueger) Brown. He married Mildred Purkey Feb. 14, 1942, in Angola, Ind.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Kenneth (Marti) of Ypsilanti, Richard (Tayna) of Saline and Douglas (Marlene) of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Judith (Tim) Boyle of Livonia; a brother, Carl of Milan; two sisters, Marion (Robert) Green of Tecumseh and Josephine (David) Cranson of Payson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Velma Brown of Tecumseh; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
