Shirley Jean Chambers, 66, of Monroe died Sunday in her home.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 tonight at Arthur Bobcean Funeral Home, Flat Rock, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Family members will officiate. Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial West, Westland.

Born May 15, 1936 in Detroit, she was the daughter of Floyd and Esther (Franklin) Chambers. She married Homer Eickholdt in March, 1954, in Garden City.

Surviving are two sons, Gary (Linda) Gulley of Detroit and Bruce (Linda) Eickholdt of Whitmore Lake; a daughter, Nanette Rocha of Monroe; four sisters, Patsy Waltron of White Lake, Hazel Conger of Oxford Lake, Betty Gostlin of Ohio and Lois Herring of Canada; 7 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

John M. Fortuna

May 27, 1927-Jan. 18, 2003

DEARBORN -- John M. Fortuna, 75, of Dearborn, formerly of Monroe, died Saturday at Oakwood Hospital, Ypsilanti.

Friends may call until 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at 9:30 at Church of the Divine Child. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Monroe.

He was born May 27, 1927. He married Evelyn Schnorburger, his wife of 52 years, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are a son, John V. (Susie).; a daughter, Doreen (Walter) Wegmueller, and four grandchildren.

Doug Stewart

Oct. 5, 1918 -- Jan. 17, 2002

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Doug Stewart, 84, of Green Bay, Wis., formerly of Lima, Ohio, whose son lives in Lambertville, died Friday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hogenkamp-Straub Funeral Home, 900 W. Grand Ave., Lima, Ohio, where a wake service will be held at 4. Additional visitation is from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Lima, Ohio. Burial will be in Gethsemani cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, including Greg (Marti) Stewart of Lambertville; two daughters, and a granddaughter.

Harold H. Helmke

April 5, 1916-Jan. 19, 2003

ANN ARBOR -- Harold H. Helmke, 87, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Lambertville and Temperance, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Sunrise Assisted Living, where he had been since January, 2002. He had suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.

There will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be held Wednesday at Bedford Memorial cemetery, Bedford Township. Farnham Funeral Home, Temperance.

Born April 5, 1916, in Deshler, Ohio, he was the son of George and Anna (Spoering) Helmke. He married Barbara Louise Miller May 1, 1941, in Napoleon, Ohio. She died Feb. 28, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Michael of Toledo and Thomas (Carla) of Sylvania, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Zeigler of Saline; a sister, Pauline Polker of Napoleon, Ohio, and three grandchildren.

Phyllis E. Istvan and William Istvan

01/21/2003

A memorial service for Phyllis E. Istvan, 78, of Monroe, and her son, William Istvan, 52, of Temperance, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church of Monroe. The Rev. Dennis Wenzel, pastor of the church will officiate.

Mrs. Istvan died Dec. 22 and her son died Dec. 23. Both had been ill.

Entombment already has taken place. Allore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucile M. Calkins

Jan. 17, 1910-Jan. 21, 2003

Services have been set for Lucile M. Calkins, 93, of Monroe who died at 12:31 a.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran Home, where she had been for eight years. She had been in declining health since October.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel. She will lie in state from 11:15 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lutheran Home chapel. The Rev. Larry Kenneth Loree Sr., pastor of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

Born Jan. 17, 1910, in Federman (Ida), she was the daughter of Eddy C. and Caroline (Kimble) Gates. She married Leslie S. Calkins Feb. 26, 1927, in Petersburg. He died Jan. 26, 1972.

Surviving are a son, Leslie D. (Joan) of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a daughter, Joyce M. (Brey) Ogdahl of Monroe; a half-brother, Alvin Jones of Houghton Lake; two sisters, Lillian Elliott and Ellen Tykoski, both of Monroe; a half-sister, Madelyne Hubbel of Ottawa Lake; 12 grandchildren, and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Beck

March 29, 1923-Jan. 20, 2003

Services have been set for Virginia Beck, 79, formerly of Ida, who died Monday night at the Lutheran Home. She had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 28 years.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight and from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Capaul Funeral Home, Ida. She will lie in state from 10 until services at 11 a.m. Friday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Ida. The Rev. Robert Schefter will officiate. Burial will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, Toledo.

Born March 29, 1923, in Toledo, she was the daughter of Harold and Mildred (Buckert) Menter. She married LeRoy Beck Dec. 27, 1944, in Toledo.

Surviving are three sons, Donald of Brighton, Thomas (Karyn) of Estero, Fla., and Michael (Robin) of Fort Myers, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Carol (Darrick) Whitaker of Monroe; a sister, Phyllis Mohler of Toledo; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Elizabeth Honeycutt

June 18, 1927-Jan. 21, 2003

SOUTH ROCKWOOD -- Elizabeth Honeycutt, 75, of South Rockwood died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in her home. She had been ill for two years.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until services at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ford Chapel of Allore-Martenson Funeral Home, Rock-wood. The Rev. Robert Karac-son, pastor of Lakepointe Community Church, Rockwood, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.

Born June 18, 1927, in Pruden, Tenn., she was the daughter of John and Anna (Baird) Partin. She married Virgil J. Honeycutt July 31, 1967, in Williamsburg, Tenn. He died March 23, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Arnold Hurst of Grosse Ile and Kenneth (Sharon) Hurst of Brownstown Township; two daughters, Susan (Charles) Drew of Brownstown Township and Kelly (Kenneth) Duby of Bellaire; three brothers, Eugene (June) and Fred (Maxine), both of Covington, Ky., and Joe of Middleboro, Ky.; three sisters, Claire Selfridge of Middlesboro, Ky., Robert Sapp of Frex, Ky., and Bessie Wooten of Flat Rock; 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Estelle C. (Quaintance) Rhoades

Dec. 12, 1918-Jan. 21, 2003

TEMPERANCE -- Estelle C. (Quaintance) Rhoades, 84, of Temperance died Tuesday at Toledo Hospital.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. David James, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, Toledo, will officiate. Burial will be in Bedford Memorial cemetery, Bedford Township.

Born Dec. 12, 1918, in Toledo, she was the daughter of William and Stella (Keller) Moebius. She married James W. Quaintance March 28, 1936. He died June 7, 1976. She married Leon Rhoades Sept. 8, 1982. He died Nov. 28, 2000.

Surviving are three daughters, Gayle Holtzman and Janice (Robert) Heath, both of Toledo, and Jane (Larry) Covrett of Temperance; a stepson, Daryl (Judy) Rhoades of Toledo; two stepdaughters, Jaqueline (Arnold) Clock of Largo, Fla., and Margo (Arnold) Bomia of Temperance; a brother, Russell (Barbara) of Toledo; two sisters, Wilma Beening and Donna Graves, both of Toledo; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; seven stepgrandchildren, and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Willie Pittman

Aug. 31, 1917-Jan. 20, 2003

MILAN -- Willie Pittman, 85, of Milan died Monday at Saline Evangelical Home.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and at 10 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

He was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Los Angeles. His companion was Marjorie Ernst of Milan.

Surviving are two sons, Willie Hopkins of Jackson and Antonio Pittman of Monroe; two daughters, Ada Pittman of Monroe and Daisy Dixon of Ypsilanti, and 15 grandchildren.

Rebecca Fitch

March 14, 1974 - Jan. 21, 2003

YPSILANTI -- Rebecca Fitch, 28, of Ypsilanti, formerly of London Township, died Tuesday at University Hospitals, Ann Arbor. She had suffered from lymphoma.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Milford Byrd will officiate. Burial will be in London Township cemetery, Milan.

Born March 14, 1974, in Tecumseh, she was the daughter of Gene and Judie (Lambert) Fitch. She made her home with her fiancé, Michael Lane.

Surviving are her parents of White Pine, Tenn.; a son, Nathen Michael Lane at home; four brothers, Edward (Dawn) of Thorn Hill, Tenn., Dennis of Morristown, Tenn., Timothy of Ypsilanti and Tony of White Pine; a sister, Erica Watkins of White Pine, and a grandmother, Ruby Lambert of White Pine.

Carl F. Curson

April 5, 1919-Jan. 22, 2003

Carl F. Curson, 83, of Monroe died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Memorial Hospital, where he had been for a week. He had been in poor health for 10 months.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. John Kershaw, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, will officiate. A service by members of Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will follow. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

Born April 5, 1919, in Monroe, he was the son of Charles and Myrtle (Hatharell) Curson. He married Cecile Sparks June 5, 1943, in Fort Lewis, Wash. She died Nov. 16, 1989. He married Dixie (Dunbar) Piedmonte Sept. 26, 1992, in Monroe. She died Oct. 2, 1994.

Surviving are two sons, Charles (Corky) and Dennis (Cynthia), both of Monroe; a daughter, Cathy (Dr. Roger) Spalding of Monroe; two sisters, Pauline A. Liedel of Toledo and Ruth Ann Pursley of Monroe; four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Dixie Darleen Zawacki

Oct. 17, 1947-Jan. 22, 2003

Services have been set for Dixie Darleen Zawacki, 55, of Monroe, who died at 1 a.m. Wednesday in her home. She had been ill for 1 ˝ years and seriously ill for four months.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Allore Funeral Home, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. James Jacobs, chaplain at Mercy Memorial Hospital, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery.

Born Oct. 17, 1947, in Plymouth, she was the daughter of Charles and Dixie (Booker) Ray. She married Edwin J. Zawacki Jr. Feb. 29, 1976, in Westland.

Surviving are her husband; a son, James Ray of Detroit Beach; a daughter, Tara Zawacki of Brownstown Township; a brother, Rodge Armstrong of Monroe; three sisters, Joyce Honeycutt of Middlesboro, Ky., Sue (Leon) Honeycutt of Westland and Kathryn (Joe) Sharp of Dundee, and three grandchildren.
