Samuel Pope

MILAN -- Samuel Pope, 62, of Milan died of natural causes Friday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home. Friends also may call from noon until services at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. J.B. Cummings will officiate. Burial will be in London Township cemetery.

Born July 17, 1940, in Bessemer, Ala., he was the son of Joseph and Pearl (Jones) Pope. He married Florence Adams Feb. 2, 1963, in Milan.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Samuel Jr. (Maria) of Milan; three daughters, Floretha Pope of Belleville and Felicia Pope and Luciana Pope, both of Ypsilanti; three brothers, William (Albertha), Joseph (Sarah) and Roy R. (Betty); four sisters, Sally Knight, Sadie Hamet, Josephine (Melvin) Johnson and Tennessee Carthage, and nine grandchildren.

Helen King Wise

July 19, 1917-Jan. 20, 2003

MILAN -- Helen King Wise, 85, of Milan died Monday in her home.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Marble Memorial United Methodist Church. Private burial will follow at Cadillac Memorial Gardens West. Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born July 19, 1917, in Redford, she was the daughter of Harvey M. and Winifred (Crysler) King. She married Byron C. Baldwin in August, 1935, in Baltimore, Md. She married Claude M. Wise March 9, 1963. He died July 31, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Byron C. (Judy) Baldwin Jr. and Jay H. (Sherley) Baldwin, both of South Bend, Ind.; four daughters, Winifred “Jackie” (Carl) Marsh of Appleton, Wis., Helen R. (James) Edwards of Milan, Barbara D. (Robert) Pullano of Portage and Betty J. (Donald) Flint of Ironwood; a stepson, Norman A. (Marilyn) Wise of Okemos; three stepdaughters, Elaine Wise Chadwick of Sparta, Ga., Beverly (Dave) Coffing of Peachtree, Ga., and Mary Margaret (James) Rokita of Howell; 26 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

James O. Perry

April 16, 1927-Jan. 23, 2003

TOLEDO -- James O. Perry, 75, of Toledo, formerly of Monroe County, died Thursday in his home. He had suffered from lung cancer.

Friends may call from until 8 tonight at David R. Jasin Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. David James will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Township cemetery, Millbury, Ohio.

Born April 16, 1927, in Toledo, he was the son of Amos and Susanna Perry.

Surviving are a brother, Edward W. of Bellevue, Ohio, and a sister, Nettie (Boyd) Stacy.

Mary J. Downing

1921-2003

DeLAND, Fla. -- Services have been set for Mary J. Downing, 81, of DeLand, formerly of Milan and Britton, who died Monday at a DeLand hospital.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Ridgeway cemetery, Ridgeway. Cover Funeral Home, Dundee, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born in 1921 in Powell, Ky. She married Donald Downing, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Donald C. of DeLand; a daughter, Charlene K. Williams of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Alyce Stamp Philbrick

Feb. 13, 1903-Jan. 23, 2003

DUNDEE – Services have been set for Alyce E. Stamp Philbrick, 99, of Dundee, formerly of Arizona and Akron, Ohio, who died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday at Huron Woods Care Center, Ann Arbor.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has been held. Arrangements are under the direction of Cover Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Akron.

Born Feb. 13, 1903, in Copley, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles and Jennie Mae (Bennett) Miksch. She married Floyd R. Stamp on Oct. 4, 1924. He died June 21, 1973. She then married Charles Philbrick on Feb. 14, 1987. He died in 1990.

Surviving are a step-son, Joe Philbrick of Discovery Bay, Calif.; two daughters, Phyllis (Edgar) Crawley of Dundee and Alice (Frank) McCarter of Westlake Village, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Stamp of Marco Island, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Hildreth Mary Comstock Braunlich

Feb. 25, 1922 – Jan. 24, 2003

Hildreth Mary Comstock Braunlich, 80, of Monroe died Friday at the Lutheran Home, where she resided for 5˝ years. She had been ill for two weeks.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Rupp Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, which will be led by Sr. Patricia Rourke, IHM. She will lie in state from 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church until Mass at 10 a.m. The Rev. Timothy Babcock, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

Born Feb. 25, 1922, she was the daughter of Howard M. and Florence (Wahl) Comstock. She married William John Braunlich, Jr. July 6, 1946 at St. Michael Catholic Church. He died April 28, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, William H. of Monroe and John H. (Colleen) Braunlich of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Barbara B. West of Dallas, Texas, and Marcia (Peter) Braunlich Henricksen of Marquette; two brothers, Dr. Frank William Comstock of Ann Arbor and Dr. Howard C. Comstock of East Lansing; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Estelle Golembieski

May 25, 1912-Jan. 24, 2003

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Estelle Mary Golembieski, 90, of Sylvania, Ohio, formerly of Ida, died Friday morning at Flower Hospital.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ida, until Mass at noon. The Rev. John LaCasse, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Ida.

Born May 25, 1912, in Tunowie, Poland, she was the daughter of Constantine and Berniece (Kozlakowski) Politowski. She married Louis A. Golembieski on Sept. 29, 1928, in Dearborn. He died July 4, 1984.

Surviving are a son, Louis of Ida; three daughters, Theresa (Vito) Galloro and Susan (John) Beyer, both of Ida and Gertrude (Frank) Neuvrith of Rochester, Mn.; a sister, Genevieve Lane of Temperance; 19 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.

Mary Louise (Iott) Rouleau

July 31, 1933-Jan. 23, 2003

Services have been set for Mary Louise (Iott) Rouleau, 69, of Monroe, who died at 9:25 p.m. Thursday in her home. She had been ill since October.

Friends may call from noon to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Rupp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maybee. The Rev. Michael Malawy, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Maybee.

Born July 31, 1933, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of Alvin and Clara (Nusbaum) Iott. She married Charles P. Rouleau Nov. 5, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maybee.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Steve (Terri) of Monroe; two daughters, Jean Newkirk of Monroe and Michele Zeibak of Florence, Ky.; three brothers, Hubert (Bernadine) of Maybee, Cletus (Esther) of Ann Arbor and Leonard (Joanne) of Midland; two sisters, Audrey Gerhardt of Monroe and Rita Iott of Mount Clemens, and four grandchildren.

Lena A. Palazzolo

Jan. 4, 1914-Jan. 25, 2003

Lena A. Palazzolo, 89, of Monroe, a former head cook at Mercy Memorial Hospital for 32 years before retiring, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday at Medilodge of Monroe following a lengthy illness.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph cemetery, Monroe, with the Rev. Timothy Babcock, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, Monroe, officiating. The Allore Funeral Home, Monroe, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are one son, Joseph Palazzola of Monroe; one daughter, Carmella Masserant of Monroe; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters, and two grandsons, Christopher Palazzola in 1992 and Joseph Masserant earlier this year.

Clara Simo

April 25, 1920-Jan. 22, 2003

WYANDOTTE – Clara Simo, 82, of Wyandotte, died Wednesday at the Lutheran Home in Monroe.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Rupp Funeral Home, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 Monday. Prayers will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Carleton. The Rev. Robert Bauer, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park, Huron Township.

Surviving are three sons, James M. (Sandy) of New Haven, Andrew G. (Linda) of California and Jerry (Eleanor) Gorka of Lincoln Park; three daughters, Denise (John) Brown of Carleton, Mary Ann (John) Blonski of Fall Branch, Tenn., and Shirley (Gerard) Dumont of Southgate; one brother, Frank (Sophie); one sister, Irene (Larry) Ayotte of Trenton; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene Simo.

William C. Hopkins

Feb. 10, 1918-Jan. 25, 2003

DUNDEE – William C. Hopkins, 84, of Dundee, formerly of Maybee and formerly employed at the old Steel Castings’ factory in Monroe, died at 3:08 a.m. Saturday at Medilodge of Monroe following a lengthy illness.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Liedel Funeral Home, Maybee, where services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Michael Clemmer, pastor of the London United Methodist Church, Milan, will officiate and burial will be in the London Township cemetery, Milan.

In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by one son, Kenneth (Marilyn) of Brooklyn; one daughter, Linda (James) Blackford of Brooklyn; one brother, Vernon (Ester) of Arizona; one sister, Bessie Kane of Carleton, and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by one son, James W., in 1946; two brothers, Merrill and Robert, and two sisters, Grace Geisler and Dorothy.

Emma Lou Elliott

Sept. 3, 1938-Jan. 24, 2003

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio – Emma Lou Elliott, 64, of Proctorville, formerly of Monroe, died Friday at her home.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville, where services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville, W. Va.

Surviving are her husband, Billy; one son, Mark of Trenton; two daughters, Teresa Jenkins of Wayne, W. Va., and Angela Elliott of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Ben of Dearborn Heights and L. Dale of Chesapeake, Ohio; three sisters, Cuba Goins of Taylor, Fannie Johnson of Redford and Betty Driskell of South Point, Ohio, and five grandchildren.

Terry Lee Coulter

Aug. 26, 1943-Jan. 25, 2003

LAMBERTVILLE – Terry Lee Coulter, 59, of Lambertville, a singer and songwriter known as Terry Lightning, died Saturday morning in St. Anne Mercy Hospital, Toledo.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, Temperance, where services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. James Stanton, music minister of Calvary Bible Chapel, Toledo, will officiate and burial will be in Whiteford Union cemetery.

In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by two sons, Michael (Bridget) and Aaron (Nicole); one daughter, Melissa; one brother, Jack; four sisters, Karen Barbier, Susan Dye, Linda Payton and Anna Mae Hall, and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ronnie.
