Giuseppa Di Ponio (D’Agostino), a resident of Highland Township died on April 26, 2004 in the care of her family at Alterra Clarebridge in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She was 89 years old. Born on September 16, 1914 in the small mountainous village of St. Elia, F. Rapido, Italy, she was the daughter of Fortunato & Concetta (Fragnoli) D’Agostino. She lived less than a mile away from her life long friend and soon to be husband, Gaetano “Guy” Diponio. On February 1st, 1934, Gaetano & Giuseppa exchanged wedding vows and pledged their lives to one another in the presence of their families and church. They made their home in the village of St. Elia and were later blessed with the births of their children. In 1937 Gaetano was called away from his family to serve in the Italian Army. The following years would present many difficult challenges and struggles for the Di Ponio family. For nine years Guy would be away from home and family with the last two spent as a prisoner of the German Army. Left alone to care for the crops, the animals and the children, Giuseppa would be overcome by a serious stroke, which would leave her bedridden for nearly a year. With the help of family and her own young children she was able to recover and help her family survive the coming years. A once distant war was now at their doorstep, as the small village of St. Elia became a route through which the Allies had to pass to get to Rome. Everything they owned and had worked hard for became the plunder of the war and their future had become an uncertainty. Somehow, through it all, she kept her family together. Guy returned home in 1945 and rejoined with his wife and family. Their home destroyed and livelihood in pieces, Guy and Giuseppa set about to rebuild their lives which had been torn by war. A household of three children had grown to five and finding enough work and food was of greater difficulty than before. In the spring of 1954, Guy and his first-born son went to America to try to better their lives. After staying in boarding houses and with various family members, and finding work wherever they could, Guy and his son had saved enough money to bring the rest of the family over from the old country. And so it was in 1956 the family was together again. Soon afterwards came the birth of their sixth child and the beginning of a successful “second life” together. Beginning a successful career in underground construction, Guy and Guiseppa were able to move their family from Detroit to Warren and then to their most recent home in beautiful Highland Township. They remained very much in love and inseparable through the most difficult times and shared gratitude for the health of their growing family. Giuseppa enjoyed most being in the company of her family. She was a devoted member of Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she’s touched. She lived her life with dignity and those she leaves behind will remember her with love. In addition to Gaetano “Guy” Di Ponio her husband and life-long friend of over 70 years, Mrs. Di Ponio is survived by her children, Giuseppe (Maria) Di Ponio, Rosino (Gladys) Di Ponio, Marino (Sandy) Di Ponio, Benedetto (Joanne) Di Ponio, Connie (Joe) Marker, and Jacob (Diane) Di Ponio. Also surviving are her 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, an expected 13th great-grandchild on the way and her many dear friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, Thursday 10AM with visitation beginning at Church at 9AM. Father Leo Lulko will officiate. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Tuesday 5-9pm and Wednesday 1-9pm. Entombment Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit Building Fund, a Mass to be prayed in her name, or to a charity of choice. For further information phone 248-684-6645

Thomas Celeskey, a resident of Highland since 1991, died at his home in the care of his family on June 12, 2004 after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was 83. Born on December 29, 1920 in Detroit, he was the eighth of ten children of John and Pauline (Mudloff) Celeskey. Raised in a devout Catholic home where the family attended Mass on Sundays and went to confession once a month, he learned to share his life with the Lord. His mother, he wrote in his journal, was the first to teach him of the Lord, and his father taught him “to do anything, means to do it right.” Thus strong faith, hard work, and love of family became his guiding principles. He had a positive outlook on life, seeing how everyone in the world was simply trying to improve their lives and the lives of their children. His favorite childhood memory was of big family dinners with plenty of mash potatoes or rice and good talk. He read comic books and loved Pinochle, Poker and Solitaire, games he learned from his older brothers and sisters and years later would teach his grandchildren. When he was nineteen and working as a meat cutter at Krogers in Detroit, Thomas Celeskey met and fell in love with Florence Oneski. They were married on his twenty-first birthday at Our Lady of Guadeloupe Church on Vinewood. He remembered that day -- December 29, 1941 -- as “sparkling” and “sunny,” and, through the long years of their marriage, they remained “best friends,” sharing life’s blessings and heartaches, joys and challenges and, for years, a pint of ice-cream on every pay day. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II, seeing combat in Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. He returned to Florence after the war, and to his work at Krogers and to raising their growing family in St. Monica’s Parish, where all of the children went to school. After retiring from Krogers in 1984, he was active in the Men’s Ministry at Dun Scotus Seminary in Southfield and enjoyed golf and fishing with the grandchildren and visiting the sick with whom he played cards and prayed. At Holy Spirit he was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Ushers’ Club, the Men’s Club, and enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center. Throughout he remained a man of abiding faith, rich humanity, and family devotion, an example of simplicity, charity and Christian living. He kept journals for the grandkids and shared his faith with them through prayer and play. One lesson he hoped his children and grandchildren would learn from him was “to love, share and spend time together.” In one of the journals Thomas left for his grandchildren, it asked, “If you could go someplace you haven’t been, where would it be and why?” Thomas wrote, “Heaven - I will meet my Lord God and Savior.” Thomas Celeskey is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-three years, Florence; his children: Diane (James) Lyons-Byrnes, Judy (Roger) Avie, Gregory (Cheryl) Celeskey, Mary (Francis) Tseng and Rose (William) Stano; his grandchildren: Paul, Becky, Mark, Jamie, Scott, Dawn, Robert, Carrie, Emily, Matthew, Nathan, Eric, Jeffrey and Michael and 8 Great-grandchildren; his sister: Esther (Harold) Koss; also many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends who join with his family in mourning his death and giving thanks to God for his life among them. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Monday from 5-9PM and Tuesday from 2-9PM. Rosary will be recited at 7 PM on Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be said at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, Wednesday at 10 AM. Fr. Leo Lulko will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Memorials may be made to Church of the Holy Spirit Building Fund or Sacred Heart Seminary. For further information phone 248.684.6645.

His three siblings Ronny, Billy, and Dolly all contributed to the early development of his wonderful personality and through his loving mother and father’s guidance, Jim was destined for success in all of his professional endeavors. As a young man, he discovered his lifelong interest in automobiles and the art of painting them, while also thriving in Athletics. Jim attended Cooley High School, starred in the Football program and would later even try out for the Chicago Bears. He graduated in the spring of 1958 shortly before falling in love with Kathy McClain. Jim and Kathy soon married and were blessed with the births of their two children, Bret and Tracy. Throughout the 60’s Jim worked very hard (sometimes two or more jobs) to create and support his idea of the perfect family while living in Romeo, Michigan and enjoyed his many different fields of employment that included Ford Motor Company paint & styling, Chrysler paint & styling, and even home heating installation.
