Leola Lafrinere, 76

Leola Lafrinere, 76, of Cheboygan died early Friday morning, Nov. 1, 2000 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Lee was born March 25, 1924 in Cheboygan, the daughter of George and Pearl (Nesbit) McLaughlin. She attended Cheboygan schools and graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1941. She married Al Lafrinere May 31, 1947 in Cheboygan. Al preceded her in death May 19, 1994. Lee was employed for over 22 years with Citizens National Bank in Cheboygan, starting as a secretary and retiring in 1984 as vice president of which she was very proud. Lee was very involved with her class reunions, she loved playing cards and was involved with the Challenged Riders Association. She was an avid follower of her grandchildren and their involvement in sporting activities. She worked on the Cheboygan jury board for several years. Lee is survived by her five children including Sharon Fenlon (Richard), Patricia Elliott, Linda Cronan (Richard), Mike Lafrinere (Joan) and Roger Lafrinere (Debbie) all of Cheboygan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren including Stacey Fenlon, Scott and wife Heather Cronan, Keri Cronan, Taylor, Matt, Amanda and Brady Lafrinere. Visitation was held Saturday and Sunday at the Nordman Funeral Home. Funeral services are today, Monday, Nov. 4, 2000 at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Fr. Mike Herman officiating. Burial will take place in Pinehill cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Challenged Riders Association, St. James Church or Hospice of the Straits.

Eugene I. Van Antwerp, Jr., 83,
Former Priest

"Gene" Van Antwerp, 83, of Bethesda, Md., died of a stroke at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001. He and his wife had been visiting his brother in Royal Oak. Van Antwerp was a son of the former mayor of Detroit. He had been a Catholic priest, seminary president, Navy and Marine chaplain, consultant to the Secretary of Defense, seminary department director for the NCEA, deputy director for the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and later as secretary of the National Board of Cosmetology. He was ordained in 1942 by Cardinal Mooney and allowed to join the Society of St. Sulpice, a teaching society. He served as rector of St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, and as rector of St. Mary's Major Seminary, located at Roland Park, Baltimore, Md. He had been sent by the Archdiocese of Detroit to study for the priesthood at Louvain, Belgium. When the Germans invaded the Lowlands he continued his studies at the North American College in Rome, Italy. He caught the last boat back from Italy to the U.S. at the outbreak of World War II, and completed his studies at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. After a year of teaching in Seattle, he joined the U.S. Navy as a chaplain and served in the South Pacific. When the war was over, he studied and received his doctorate in theology at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He served for several years as chaplain on board the U.S.S. Missouri. For many summers, he served as the chaplain on the annual U.S. Navy Academy's Midshipmen Cruise. He leaves his loving wife of 30 years, Marie. Also surviving him are his siblings Sr. Mary Dolores, RSCJ, Joseph (of Cheboygan), Gore, Agnes; George, Dacia (Mrs. Robert Denton, Sr.); and Daniel. Preceding him in death were three other siblings, Pauline, Lauretta and Joan. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Hills Church in Rochester Hills. Arrangements are being made by the William Sullivan & Sons Funeral Parlor in Royal Oak.

Blendine Frances McCarthy, 97

Blendine Frances McCarthy (Steinhauser), 97, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2001 in Toledo, Ohio. She was born to Joseph and Philomena (Huss) Steinhauser of New Riegel, Ohio on Aug. 21, 1903. She was preceded in death by her former husband, John J. McCarthy Jr.; son John J. McCarthy III; 10 brothers and sisters; and two grandsons. Surviving are her sons, James Patrick McCarthy of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Robert F. McCarthy of Mackinaw City; and a daughter, Marjorie Ann Carter of Clearwater, Fla.; and 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A Mass of the resurrection was March 27 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Toledo, with the Rev. Thomas Quinn presiding. Interment was in Resurrection cemetery Mausoleum. Those wishing to make memorials are asked to remember the Mercy School of Nursing of Northwest Ohio.

Cynthia L. Tallman, 45

Cynthia L. Tallman of Cheboygan passed away on April 2, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital. She was 45 years old. She was born on Dec. 8, 1954 to Walter and Mary (Kraft) Andrzejewski. She married her husband Fred on Dec. 27, 1998 at their home in Cheboygan. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ñ Aerie No. 1282 in Cheboygan. She is survived by her husband Frederick Tallman, her stepchildren, Fred (Kathy) Tallman III, Melinda (Mark) VanDorn and David Tallman and three stepgrandchildren. She also leaves her brothers, Dennis (Vicki) Andrzejewski of Clinton Township, Ronald Andrzejewski of Warren, Russell (Mary) Andrzejewski of Rochester Hills and Randy (Amiee) Andrzejewski of Shelby Township. Cynthia also leaves many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at Christian Funeral Home on Thursday, April 5, 2001 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be an Eagles service at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, April 6 there will be visitation at the funeral home from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Christian Funeral Home. Memorials may be left to Hospice of the Straits, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Nellis Hammond, 85

Nellis Hammond, 85, of Brighton, formerly of Cheboygan, passed away on April 2 in Ann Arbor following an extended illness. He was born Oct. 30, 1915 in Detroit, the son of Ernest and Emma (Hug) Hammond. On Feb. 1, 1947 he was married to Elizabeth Kastner in Detroit and throughout their marriage lived in Redford Township, Livonia and 20 years in Cheboygan enjoying their retirement before moving to Brighton. Mr. Hammond was a proud officer in the United States Army during World War II, and active member of the Kiwanis Club in Cheboygan, and active in the Brighton Senior Center. Mr. Hammond was a General Motors retiree where he was employed as a purchasing agent. Surviving in addition to his wife Elizabeth are daughters Marjorie (David) Wdowiak of Canton, Karen (Peter) Cundari of Novi and Patricia (A. James) Uren of Brighton. Also one brother, two sisters, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Brighton Wesleyan Church, 7555 Brighton Road, Brighton. The family will begin greeting friends at 10 a.m. Officiating the service will be Rev. Ronald P. Walker and Youth Pastor Christopher Uren. Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Arrangements are by the Keehn Funeral Home, Brighton, (810-229-9871).

Donald R. Reynolds, 69
Donald R. Reynolds, 69, of Ovid, died May 11, 2001 at his home. He was born Sept. 25, 1931 in Cheboygan. He graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Navy for four years serving in the Korean Conflict. The Reynolds family moved from Lansing to Ovid in 1968. Don retired from the Lansing Fire Department as a captain in 1983. He was a member of Shepardsville United Methodist Church, Owosso VFW, Michigan Sheriff's Association, NRA, Shiawassee Sportsmen's Club and Michigan Firefighter's Union. He married Reva Rinckey July 19, 1955 in St. Johns. She preceded him in death Aug. 2, 1996. Surviving are three daughters, Robin (Ron) Shivley, Jean (Bob) Ruff and Teresa (Kevin) Russell all of Ovid; grandchildren, Trina and Crystal Shivley, Adam and Emily Ruff, Curtis and Donielle Heinze and Nathan and Nicole Russell. He was preceded in death by a son, Everett, in 1973, and son-in-law Pat Heinze, in 1993. Funeral services were May 15 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, with the Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. Burial was at Male Grove cemetery.

Marjorie H. Morrison, 83
BRADENTON, Fla. Ñ Marjorie H. Morrison, 83, of Bradenton, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002. She was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Detroit. She moved to Bradenton in 1988 from Mullett Lake. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cheboygan and a homemaker. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the New Floridians. She was predeceasedby her husband, Elton, and her son, Elton "Buzz" Morrison. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Spry of Bradenton; one sister, Barbara Muirhead of Milford, Mich.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Brown and Sons Funeral Home in Bradenton is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 600 U.S. 301 Blvd. West, Suite 136, Bradenton, FL 34205.

Marion Lucy Roza, 74
BEAVERTON, Mich. Ñ Marion Lucy Roza (nee Frost-Enos) of Beavertown, Mich., passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2002. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Brown Funeral Home, 1616 Davidson Road, Flint. A vigil prayer service is scheduled at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation also will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in Flint. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. William F. Wegher officating. Burial will follow at Gracelawn cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Leo the Great Altar Society.

Elizabeth 'Betty' Crawford, 77

CHEBOYGAN - Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Crawford, 77, of Cheboygan, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. She was born on Oct. 12, 1924, in Detroit to the late Frank and Mary (Donahue) Kern. She graduated from Immaculata High School and attended the University of Detroit, where she met her husband, Wilbur Eugene Crawford. they were married July 21, 1945, in Detroit. In 1947 they moved to Cheboygan, where Wilbur set up a dental practice. Betty was a member of St. Mary/St. Charles Church as well as a former member of the Altar Society and the County Extension. Betty is survived by her seven children: three sons, Michael Crawford of Harbor Springs, Paul (Cheryl) Crawford of Jackson and Steven (Peggy) Crawford of Freeland; four daughters, Carol (Joel) Potter of Menominee, Dolores Crawford and Earl Taylor of Mackinaw City, Elaine (Robert) Desy of Mackinaw City and Christine (John) Ludwig of Cape Coral, Fla.; 17 grandchildren: Julie, Sara, David Paul, Adam, David, Brian, Dawn, Chris, Allison, Patti, Lori, David, Erica, Alyse, Danielle and Jared; eight great-grandchildren: Whitney, Ethan, Frances, Nathaniel, Aarron, Emilee, Colin and Keaton. She also leaves one brother, Frank (Beverly) Kern of Mancelona; two sisters, Theresa (Jack) Crinnion of Harbor Springs and Mary Lou (Dick) Hyde of South Lyon; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur, in 1980 and two children, Timothy and Wilbur. Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was devoted to her family. Visitation will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Christian Funeral Home. The funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary/St. Charles Church, with the Rev. Paul Megge officiating. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Vivian M. Curran, 67

CHEBOYGAN - Vivian M. Curran, 67, of Cheboygan, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital Cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Cheboygan. Christian Funeral Home is serving the family.

Robert A. Eisen, 85

GAYLORD - Mr. Robert A. Eisen, 85, of Black Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. Mr. Eisen was born in Detroit on Jan. 17, 1916, was raised in the Detroit area and moved to Black Lake in 1974. He was a graduate of Northern High School in Detroit. He later went to work as a manufacturer's representative, a career that would span 50 years. During that time he worked for LCN Door Closers throughout the state of Michigan. Mr. Eisen was a life member of the Onaway Masonic Lodge No. 425 and the Valley of Detroit Masonic Temple. he loved his work and the "north country" and enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Robin (Ray) Blackwell of Huntington Woods, Mich., Lee (Jan) Roberts of Beverly Hills, Mich., Lynn (Michael) Strelow of Salem, Ore., Randi (Gary) Cowan of Onley, Ill., and Bob (Lori) Eisen of Gaylord; 18 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite Eisen and Betty Lee; and the caregivers at McReynolds Hall. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to the 3 p.m. funeral services Saturday, Nov. 24, at Gaylord Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. James Mathis officiating. At the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to McReynolds Hall or to Hospice through he Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.

Carl E. Van Fleet, 73

OWOSSO, Mich. - Carl E. Van Fleet, 73, of Owosso, formerly of Cheboygan, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Owosso Memorial Healthcare. He was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Cheboygan, the son of Carl and Margarita (Loeffler) Van Fleet. He married Maxine Warella in July of 1949 in Cheboygan. She preceded him in death in 1998. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 21 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, LaRowe Chapel, in Perry. There will be no services.

Pearl W. Anderson, 97

HUDSON, Fla. - Pearl W. Anderson, formerly Pearl Jewell, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home in Hudson, Fla., at the age of 97. She was a longtime resident of Mackinaw City and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She moved to Florida about 10 years ago. Her husband, Raymond Anderson, preceded her in death, as well as a daughter, Carolyn J. Anderson, and a son, Lyle R. Anderson. She is survived by one daughter, Beverly J. Chambers of Hudson, Fla.; a brother, Everett Jewell of Long Lake, Mich.; four grandchildren, Randall W. Chamber of Holland, Mich., Mark R. Anderson of Seattle, Wash., Valerie S. Anderson of Petoskey and Lori L. Karpinski of Zephyrhills, Fla.' 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held form 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 11, 2002, at the Nordman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Pinehill cemetery.
