Robert Kyle McPherson
Robert Kyle McPherson, 95, passed on to his new residence with Jesus on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at his daughter, Delores Hudson Gearhart’s home in Afton, where he had lived since 2001. He had moved here from Beaver Falls, Pa.
Kyle was born in Salinville, Ohio, on July 18, 1913 and was raised on the family farm. On Oct. 1, 1935 he married the former Wilma Bangor in East Liverpool, Ohio. She preceded him in death in 2001 after 66 years of marriage.
During World War II, he helped build airplane propellers at Curtis Wright in Vanport, Pa. That plant was later bought by Westinghouse Corp., where Kyle worked until retirement in 1978. For 16 winters, he and Wilma towed their travel trailer to Tucson, Ariz. Their recreation there was shuffleboard and Kyle was president for three years of the Arizona State Shuffleboard Association. In the summer, he enjoyed vegetable gardening. He was also a member of Wolverine Free Methodist Churc.
Kyle is survived by his daughter, Delores Gearhart of Afton; granddaughter Lakyn Murray; great grandson Cameron Hunter of Pickens, S.C.; his sister, Virginia Huggins of Walla Walla, Wash.; as well as three nephews, one niece and their children.
Besides his parents, Thomas and Celia (Todd) McPherson, and his wife, Wilma, he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Kurt Hudson, and a brother, Howard McPherson.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at Lintz Funeral Home in Indian River. Pastor Steve Evoy will officiate. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Hospice of the Straits.

Delano "Fats" Franklin Mason
Delano "Fats" Franklin Mason, age 73 of Tower, died February 11, 2006 at his home. Fats was born in Tower on November 11, 1932 to John Robert and Martha (Latsch) Mason. On January 25, 1980 he was married to Penny Bonnard at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Onaway. Fats was a lifelong resident of Tower and worked as a foreman and lineman for Eden's Linemen. Before becoming a lineman he worked as a mechanic and was on of the first mechanics in Onaway to be able to work on an automatic transmission. Fats was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church and served in the Army during peacetime. He found enjoyment in hunting, fishing, playing cards, working on cars, gardening, cooking and canning. He loved music and was a talented musician who could play almost any instrument and played most songs by ear. Fats will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Penny of Tower; daughters, Anna (Derek) McCombs of Traverse City; Debbie (Leon) Nash of Onaway; Judy (Rod) Morgan of Onaway; Theresa (Tim) Lietaert of Tower and Connie (Rich) Aown of Hartland; sons, Tony (Jolene) Mason of Millersburg; Terry (Terese) Mason of Suttons Bay; John (Lisa) Mason of Gillette, Wyoming and Joseph Mason of Tower; 28 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his brothers, Marvin (Gladys) Mason of Tower; Lloyd (June) Mason of Tower and Owen (Carol) Mason of Onaway; twin brother, Franklin Delano (Alice) Mason of Kalamazoo; sisters, Helen Waldie of Tower; Isabelle DeRosia of Onaway and Renatta (Erwin) Ganske of Onaway; and mother-in-law, Hazel Bonnard of Onaway. Fats was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maben Gage and Melba Covell; brothers, Edward and Earl Mason; and father-in-law, Stanley Bonnard.

John Carroll Sr., 83
ANN ARBOR - John Carroll Sr., age 83, of East Tawas, Mich., formerly of Cheboygan, passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
He was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Detroit, the son of John H. Carroll of Brockton, Mass., and Margaret M. (Slattery) Carroll of Bay City.
He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and was stadium announcer for U of M football games. He was program director and announcer for WUOM Ann Arbor and account executive for WHRV in Ann Arbor. He was vice president of Knorr Broadcasting Inc., stations WKMH/WKNR in Detroit. In 1959, he founded Carroll Broadcasting Inc., stations WKMF-AM Flint, WIOS-AM, WKJC-FM, WQLB-FM Tawas and WKJZ-FM, Alpena.
He was a veteran of World War II , where he attained the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force and flew a P-38 fighter in the 8th Air Force, 55th Fighter Group. He was shot down over Germany and was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1 for two years. He was awarded the Purple Heart and U.S. Air Force Air Medal.
He was a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association, the American Legion Post and VFW Post in Oscoda, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, Cheboygan, the Detroit Athletic Club, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the ADCRAFT Club of Detroit and the Crisis Club of Detroit.
He was husband of Catherine (Goetz) Carroll; father of Catherine Parks of Clarkston, Mich., Sharon Young of Williamston, Mich., John Carroll Jr. of Oscoda, Mich., Margaret Mary Meulendyk of Grand Rapids, Mich., Patricia Mason of East Tawas, Mich., Timothy Carroll of Tawas City, Mich., and Michael Carroll of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and a brother, William Carroll of Ann Arbor.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in East Tawas, where a memorial Mass will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Jacques & Kobs Funeral Home in Tawas was in charge of arrangements.

William A. Duby, 70
AFTON - William A. Duby, 70, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2003, at his Afton home.
The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2003, at the Lintz Funeral Home in Indian River, where funeral services will be conoducted at 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. John Lover will officiate.
Memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society or Afton Community Core. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

John T. Wizner, 56

SAULT STE. MARIE - John T. Wizner, age 56, of Sault Ste. Marie and formerly of Cheboygan, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003.

He was born March 8, 1947 in Saginaw, Mich., to John J. and Aileen (Hennessey) Wizner. On May 25, 1990 in Houston, Texas, John married the former Shirley Kwiatkowski, who survives. John had worked as a welder for Wessing Welding and Fabrication in Sheboygan, Wis.

Besides his wife, Shirley, John is survived by his mother, Aileen, of Saginaw; his daughter, Jennifer Page; his stepdaughter, Kim (Ray) McKelvie of Cheboygan; three brothers, Joseph and Christopher both of Spokane, Wash., and Michael of Petoskey; eight sisters, Kathleen Gross of Riverdale, Mich., Mary Schwartz of Cheboygan, Noreen Sawatzki of Portland, Ruth Liska of Mackinaw City, Nanette Kujawa of Cheboygan, Cheryl Butler of Kentucky, Marion Wizner of Idaho and Suzanne Willis of Indian River; four grandchildren, Zachary, Syrina, Shelby and Ashley, all of Cheboygan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his father in 1974 and a brother David in 2001.

Visitation will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with a rosary, led by the family, at 6 p.m. Thursday. Per John's wishes, no other services are planned and cremation will follow the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Marjorie L. Scott, 90

CHEBOYGAN - Marjorie Lorraine Scott, age 90, of Cheboygan, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Cheboygan Health Care Center.

Marjorie was born in Cheboygan on Dec. 29, 1912, the daughter of William and Minnie (Speck) McLaughlin.

Marjorie attended Cheboygan schools and graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1930. She then attended Cheboygan County Normal, graduating in 1931. Marjorie taught school in both Cheboygan and Wolverine for five years.

In 1935 she married Donald Scott of Wolverine. He preceded her in death in 1981.

Marjorie loved playing the piano and people seemed to love to hear her play. She was the pianist for many years at the Wolverine Baptist Church and in more recent years at First Congregational Church in Cheboygan. She also played at the Cheboygan Shores Senior Citizens apartments, where she lived until this past year. Marjorie especially loved church music and marching bands. She was a wonderfully kind and loving person, beloved by her family and many friends. Most important to her over the years were her faith and family.

Marjorie is survived by four children, Ronald Scott, Joyce Hudson and Mark (Sarah) Scott, all of Wolverine, and Donna (Michael) Azure of Green Bay, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters.

Visitation will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at the Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan, where funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Revs. Edwin Remaly and Gretchen Schupp officiating. Interment will take place at Silver Lake cemetery in Wolverine.

Henry Bednarz, 85

ANN ARBOR - Henry Bednarz, 85, formerly of Wolverine, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, in Ann Arbor.

Henry was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Hamtramk, Mich., the son of Joseph and Mary (Piejko) Bednarz. He grew up in Wolverine and graduated from Wolverine High School in 1936. He then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he worked in the Upper Peninsula and on Isle Royale.

He entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He served, among other places, in Korea, France and Taiwan. He retired from the Army in 1963 as a lieutenant colonel. Following his career in the Army, Henry was employed as a civil servant with the Army Automotive Tank Command, where he was employed for approximately 10 years. At that time he returned to Wolverine to make his home.

Henry was an active member of the Wolverine community. He was instrumental in forming the Wolverine Area Development Advisory Committee and other community projects. He was former Nunda Township supervisor and was a member of the Robert Vroman American Legion Post No. 122 in Wolverine.

He is survived by his wife, Estelle; children Hank, Barbara and Marlene Bednarz, all of Ann Arbor; grandchildren Jason Bednarz of Athens, Ga., and Alexis Bednarz of Ann Arbor; great-grandson Zachary Bednarz; sisters Virginia Ballard of Essexville, Mich., and Isabel Luther of Gaylord.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Emil Bednarz,

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 7, 2003, at the Lintz Funeral Home in Indian River, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, with the Rev. Harry Speckman officiating. Interment will take place at Silver Lake cemetery in Wolverine, with the Robert Vroman American Legion Post No. 122 performing military honors.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Wolverine Area Library. Envelopes for that purpose will be available at the funeral home.

Marie L. Malenfant, 92

CHEBOYGAN - Marie L. Malenfant, 92, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2003 at her home.

Marie was born May 8, 1911 in Cheboygan, the daughter of Frederick and Caroline (Schley) Malenfant. A resident of Cheboygan her entire life, she was a graduate of Cheboygan High and County Normal Schools, and a 1946 graduate of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. She later taught at Mackinaw Avenue Elementary School for 29 years and Eastside Elementary School for 15 years, retiring in 1974.

Marie was a member of St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and the Women's Business and Professional Association, and enjoyed gardening, photography, local history and traveling.

Surviving are one sister, Gerry Malenfant of Cheboygan; two brothers, Carl and Leo Malenfant, both of Cheboygan' a sister-in-law, Gale Malenfant of Cheboygan; a brother-in-law, Mike LaHaie of North Potomac, Md.; 27 nieces and nephews; 47 great-nieces and great-nephews; 20 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Bertha LaCross and Kate LaHaie; and seven brothers, Myrt, Edward, George, Fred, Harry, Frank and Paul Malenfant.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at the Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday led by the Daughters of Isabella. Visitation will continue on from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, where the funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Paul Megge officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary/St. Charles Bell Tower Fund, Bishop Baraga School Building Fund or the Cheboygan Health Care Center.

Doris A. Berden, 76

CHEBOYGAN - Doris A. Berden, 76, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Hospice House.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, where the funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary/St.Charles Catholic Church.

Philip 'Red' Rogers, 68

CHEBOYGAN - Philip "Red" Rogers, 68, of Cheboygan, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at the Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Paul Megge will officiate. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery.

Bessie Stafford, 75

CHEBOYGAN - Bessie Stafford, 75, of Cheboygan, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2003.

The family will receive callers from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the Church of Christ Restored on Sand Road, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will take place at Pinehill cemetery in Cheboygan.

Nordman Funeral Home of Cheboygan cared for the family.
