William "Bill" Mackey

TECUMSEH, MI

William E. (Bill) Mackey was born in Tecumseh on July 1, 1923, graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1941, and died at Herrick Manor in his beloved town of Tecumseh on April 29, 2007. He was the only child of David A. and Nina Mae (Sanderson) Mackey.

Throughout his youth, Bill was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and in 1939 was one of a very small, select group of Scouts in the nation to achieve the designation of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting. This set the stage for good citizenship, community involvement, leadership and public service contributions that he made throughout his lifetime.

Bill Mackey was a renaissance man who sampled many lines of work and had several interests and many hobbies. As a young man he purchased 120 acres of land from Henry Ford on which he grew crops and raised cattle. He also experienced factory work as a laborer at Bruce’s Foundry in Tecumseh and later at the Ace Drill Company in Adrian. In the 1950’s he subdivided his property and built a few homes, leading him to become a licensed contractor and real estate agent. But, community service was his primary interest, and in the early 1960’s he served as Building Inspector for Raisin Township. This involvement eventually led to his decision in 1968 to become the Republican candidate for County Commissioner---a position to which he was elected and continued to serve until his retirement in 1984. During his tenure he served as Chairman of the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners for a couple of terms. For 30 years Bill also served on the Board of Directors for the Lenawee County Youth Center.

During that time, he helped establish a job-training program for youth at Maurice Spear Campus. In 2003 he was honored with the "Friend of the Maurice Spear Campus Award" for his many contributions.

Bill was blessed with a devoted and loving family. His wife of 60 years, Bertha E. (Schmidt) Mackey preceded him in death in 2002. They had two daughters, Dorothy (Wayne) Castledine and Janet (Ron) Cannon; four grandchildren: Laura (Tim) Schultz, Lisa (Thorn) Vogel, Kirk (Anita) Taylor, and Stefanie Cannon, plus several great grandchildren.

Bill and Bertha enjoyed traveling and visited most of the Continental United States, plus did a tour of Europe. In 1950, Bill took his family on a vacation to Florida, and it was the beginning of an annual winter tradition that spanned more than 50 years. They eventually purchased a home in Venice, Florida where they spent the winter months from 1965 to 2001. In addition to travel, Bill had many hobbies and interests that included being a licensed airplane pilot, a fisherman, a woodworker, a clock maker, a storyteller, a genealogist and a wood carver. Most of all, though, he enjoyed people—meeting and talking with them--and maintaining connections with friends and family.

William E. Mackey had a generosity of spirit and tremendous pride for both the City of Tecumseh and the County of Lenawee. Prior to his death, he established a scholarship in the Mackey name at the Maurice Spear Campus in Adrian. In 2006 he set-up an endowment at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, where he had been a member for over 60 years. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be directed to his church, or to the Mackey Scholarship Fund at the Maurice Spear Campus.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock on Saturday, May 5th, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church on Maumee Street in Tecumseh. Bill will be interred beside Bertha in the Tipton cemetery at a later date.
