Dana E. Burmester

Dana E. Burmester, 76, of Wyoming and formerly of Mancelona, died Thurs., Sept. 21, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Mancelona, the daughter of Oney and Frieda (Authurson) Lanning. She married Ernest J. Burmester in Cadillac in 1974. Dana had worked at the Traverse City State Hospital and at the maternity ward at Meadow Brook Hospital in Bellaire, now known as Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. She has lived in Wyoming and cottaged in Mancelona since 1983. She enjoyed quilting, playing games, cooking, spending time with her family and writing poems. Dana is survived by husband Ernest J. Burmester of Wyoming; children Phyllis (Conrad) Pawlowski of Cheboygan, Kathryn (Jerry) Schram of Mancelona, Darrel (Beth) Borst of Wyoming, Jeff (Lisa) Burmester of Roscommon, and Julie (Rodney) Barrett of St. Clair Shores; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Lyle Lanning of Mancelona; sisters Arlene Belanger of Williamsburg and Joyce (Sam) Long of Kalkaska; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Ty Borst on Dec. 2, 1960; brothers Wayne and Ward; and sisters Ethel, Hazel and Leota. Funeral services were Sept. 25 at the Mancelona Missionary Church; Rev. Peter A. Elliott officiated. Interment was in Star Township cemetery, Alba. Electa B. Cantrell

Electa B. Cantrell, 89, of Mancelona, died Mon., Sept. 18, 2000 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was born Sept. 11, 1911, in McArthur, Ohio, the daughter of Edward and Bertha (Durfee) Henderson. She lived in Mancelona most of her life. On Feb. 4, 1930, in Antrim County, she married Alvah B. Cantrell. He died on Jan. 28, 1986. Electa was a member of the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. She enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, sewing and baking. Most of all she enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She is survived by children Violet Alexander of Gaylord, Junior (Ila) Cantrell of Mancelona, William (Debbie) Cantrell of Gaylord, and Ronald Cantrell, Richard (Anna Mae) Cantrell, Gary (Mary) Cantrell, Wayne (Jan) Cantrell and Phyllis (Kris) Fries, all of Mancelona; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and sister Francis Kerestes of Millington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers William and Bert Henderson, sister Virgie Rohde, son-in-law Don Alexander, and great-grandson Jacob Mathew Stotler. Funeral services were Sept. 21 at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc. in Mancelona; Yousef "Yogi" Jabara and Pastor Mark McCool of the Antrim Church of Christ officiated. Interment was in Fairview cemetery, Mancelona.

Winston Judge Fisher

Winston Judge Fisher, 87, of Bellaire, passed away Thurs., Sept. 21, 2000, in Traverse City. He was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Scottville, the son of Charles M. and Sarah Fisher. He grew up in Scottville and attended school at Scottville, graduating from Ludington High School. Winston went on to attend Yale University in New Haven, Conn. On Jan. 11, 1946, he married Carmen Law in Detroit. Winston was a first lieutenant in World War II, completing 35 bombing missions as a B-29 flight engineer. He retired in 1975 as the head of manufacturing at Modern Materials Corp. in Detroit, a subsidiary of Bendix Corp. that pioneer the production of aluminum siding. He was a recreational pilot out of the Antrim County Airport, and also enjoyed skiing and hunting. He is survived by wife Carmen of Bellaire, daughter Cheryl (Joseph) Ramotowski of San Antonio, Texas; son Lance K. Fisher of Victoria, Minn.; and grandchildren Kaitlyn Fisher and Brendan Topolewski. He was preceded in death by brothers Russell, Loyal and Harold, and grandson Jason. Funeral services were Sept. 25 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home; the Rev. Douglas Niemi of Bethany Lutheran officiated. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery, Ludington. Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, MD 20850, or the 58th Bomb Wing Fund, New England Air Museum, Bradley International Airport, Windsor Locks, CT 06096.

Florence Ide

Florence Ide, 76, of Big Twin Lake and formerly of Cadillac, passed away Mon., Sept. 18, 2000 at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac. She was born March 7, 1924 in Rosslyn, Ky., the daughter of Rex and Henrietta (Townsend) Allen. On May 31, 1947 in Cadillac, she married Harold Ide in the Church of Christ. Florence had a productive life working 17 years at B.F. Goodrich and selling children's wear at Montgomery Wards and Clark's Clothing Den in Cadillac. She was an active member with the American Legion Auxiliary as a Life Member at Post 94. She was a member of the 40 and 8, and past 9th District president. Her hobbies were flower gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by Harold, her husband of nearly 54 years; daughters Linda Lee Ide of Rockford and Carol Elaine (Mark) Ide Stanton of Cadillac; grandchildren Theresa Lynn Williams (Michael Paul) Potter, Mark Anthony Stanton, Mary Elizabeth Stanton and Michelle Elaine Stanton; and great-granddaughter Kady Lee Potter. Also surviving are brothers Jack (Margaret) Allen of Mancelona, Jim Allen of Temple Hills, Md., and Joe (Sherry) Allen of Mancelona; sisters Helen (Mick) Smith of Grand Rapids and Nancy Gaylord of Mancelona; sister-in-law Misako Allen of Novi; and brothers-in-law Gerald, Herb, Keith (Jackie) Ide and DeWayne (Sherri) Ide. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law Orvis Glenn and Mary Elizabeth (Briggs) Ide, and brother Buck Allen. Funeral services were Sept. 22 at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac; Rev. Chad Zaucha officiated. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery, Cadillac. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, with envelopes available at the Peterson Funeral Home.

Elton D. LaBean

Elton D. LaBean, 71, died at his home in Fife Lake Sept. 7, 2000, of acute myloid leukemia. He was born in River Rouge on March 1, 1929. He moved to Dearborn Heights where he had a Detroit Times newspaper route of 80 customers. Elton also worked at the shipyard in River Rouge and helped build the Edmund Fitzgerald. He was a millwright and retired from the Ford transmission plant in Livonia. He loved playing his guitar and harmonica, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by wife of 23 years Joyce; and four children by his first marriage, Marie and Bob Petrovich of Hamburg, Mich., Jeanne and Joe Wojik of South Lyon, Raymond and Cheri of Plantation, Fla., and Denise of Madison Heights; as well as eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Phoebe Arquette, brother Lavern, and sisters Hazel LaFreniere and Norma Collins. Arrangements were handled by Girrbarch-Krasum Funeral Home of River Rouge, and burial was at the Michigan Memorial Park cemetery.

James R. Milligan

James R. Milligan, 62, of Mancelona, died Sat., Sept. 23, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Mancelona, the son of Clarence and Cecelia B. (Czykyski) Milligan. On April 22, 1988, in Kalkaska, he married Georgia "Dodie" Alexander. James was a member of the Alba Pentecostal Tabernacle in Alba. He enjoyed woodworking and working with his hands. He also loved helping people and volunteered at the Alba Food Pantry. James is survived by his wife Georgia "Dodie" Milligan of Mancelona; children Patricia Hillman of Mancelona, Michelle (David) Esterbrook of Dearborn, Missie (Paul) Johnson of Mancelona, Tara (Joel) Hundley of Interlochen, and James R. Milligan II of Mancelona; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Daniel (Joyce) Milligan of Kalkaska, Sam (Patricia) Milligan of Alba, and Clarence "Moon" Milligan of Traverse City; and sisters Faye (John) Leaman of East Jordan and Arlene Vahovich of Mancelona; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons, one brother and one sister. Funeral services are at 11 a.m.Wed., Sept. 27 at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc. in Mancelona; Pastor Claude Rowley of the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Alba will officiate. Interment will be in Star Township cemetery, Alba. Memorials may be given to the Milligan family.

William R. Morton

William R. Morton, 79, of Kalkaska, formerly of Romeo, died Sun., Sept. 24, 2000, at the home of his daughter. He was born in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sept. 27, 1920, the son of Ralph and Edith Jeffers Morton. Mr. Morton was employed as a welder by General Motors prior to his retirement, and resided in Romeo until 1985. He made his home in Kalkaska for the past 12 years. Mr. Morton was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the China Burma India campaign. He was a member of Land O'Lakes VFW Post 8684. Surviving are sons Curtis Morton of Kalkaska, Jeffrey Morton of Romeo, and Peter Morton of Port Huron; daughter Lynn Morton of Kalkaska; sisters Mary Holmes of Kalkaska and Martha Powell of Schererville, Ind.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. A gathering in memory of the life of William Morton will be at 1 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 28 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The service will be under the auspices of Land O'Lakes VFW Post 8684. Inurnment will be in Fort Custer National cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of services. Memorial gifts may be directed to Munson Hospice.

Robert Earl Wagner

Robert Earl Wagner, 73, passed away Sept. 21, 2000, in Plymouth Township. Robert was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Ann Arbor. He was a teacher with the Dearborn Public Schools. He taught at O.L. Smith Junior High School and Lawry High School, retiring in 1982. He came to the Plymouth community in 1985 from Livonia. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth. He was past president of the Beacon Hollow Condo Association. He enjoyed stamp collecting, watching sports on television and playing bridge at the Cultural Center in Plymouth. His favorite pastime was golf and he especially enjoyed playing at the course in Elk Rapids, where he was a longtime member. Robert and his wife Jean were married for 49 years. They owned a cottage in Elk Rapids since 1967. He is survived by his wife and son Bruce Wagner of Clinton Township. He was preceded in death by his daughter Joanne Wagner-Ceterski. A memorial service was held at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home in Plymouth, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery in Elk Rapids. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Hospice or the Michigan Humane Society.

Kyle J. Butler

Kyle Justin Butler, 64, passed away Nov. 9, 2000, at Fairfax Hospital in Church Falls, Va. The son of Norman and Hazel (Sandeen) Butler, he was born in South Boardman Aug. 3, 1936. After graduating from Kalkaska High School he spent six years in the United States Army, stationed most of the time in Virginia. There he met and married Joy Carney, who passed away in January 1995. Memorial services were Nov. 12 in the chapel of the DeMain Funeral Home in Springfield, Va. Although a member of the Lutheran Church, services were performed by Kyle's very dear friend, Rabbi Bruce Aft. He was a devoted husband and son and will be missed by his family and friends. Besides his mother, he is survived by a special cousin, Sherry Sandeen of Southfield, and many other relatives. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Beatrice I. Councilor

Beatrice I. Councilor, 81, of Atlanta, Michigan and formerly of Taylor died Wed., Nov. 22, 2000, at Alpena General Hospital after a long illness. She was born April 4, 1919, in Boyne City, the daughter of Irving and Julia (Harris) Curtis. On May 28, 1944, in Mancelona, she married Thomas A. Councilor. He preceded her in death on June 25, 1979. Beatrice had worked as a volunteer for many years at a soup kitchen in Taylor. She also enjoyed pen pals and playing bingo. She is survived by daughter Thelma "Sam" (Roger) Teets of Atlanta, Mich.; son Robert Councilor of Southgate; grandchildren Kelly (Anna) Schwartz of Traverse City, Michael Schwartz of Plainfield, Ill., Laura Lynn Councilor of Southgate, and Sarah Ann Councilor of Southgate; grandchildren Tordan, Michael, Kylie and Logan Schwartz; brother-in-law Harold J. Babcock of Michigan Center; sister-in-law June Curtis of Mancelona; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Curtis, and sister Loretta Jean Babcock. Funeral services were held on Sat., Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. Yousef "Yogi" Jabara officiated and interment followed in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, Inc., 2350 Huron Parkway, Ann Arbor, MI 48104-5130.

Cornelius P. Devine

Cornelius P. Devine, 87, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County, died Mon., Nov. 20, 2000, at the home of his son in West Branch. Mr. Devine was born in Kalkaska County April 5, 1913, to Robert and Rose Dockery Devine. He married Frances MacHale Feb. 11, 1950, in Glenview, Ill. She preceded him in death March 14, 2000. Prior to his retirement in 1976, Mr. Devine was employed by the Michigan Department of Transportation. He was a former member of the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Authority Board and had served on the Excelsior Township Board of Review. He was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and a charter member and Past Grand Knight of St. Joseph the Worker Council 7419, Knights of Columbus. Surviving are son Robert (Catherine) Devine of West Branch; daughter Maureen (Jerry) Hayes of Grayling; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several cousins. Brother Bernard, and sisters Katherine Devine and Mary Eileen Downey, preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 25 at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, with Father Jim Holtz as celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary of the Woods cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Helping Hands, 335 E. Houghton, West Branch, MI 48661; St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church; or Mass intentions. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
