Lloyd "Dutch" Allen Heneveld Sr.

Lloyd "Dutch" Allen Heneveld Sr., 75, of Grand Rapids went to be with his Lord and Savior on Nov. 24, 2000, after struggling with congestive heart failure caused by childhood rheumatic fever. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his wife, Marie, of 49 years. Together, they passed on their faith and family values to their seven children: Allen (Nina) of Laguna Beach, Calif., Bill (Tricia) of Grand Rapids, Steve (Kris) of Salem, Ore., Dan (Lisa) of Zeeland, Scott (Carrie) of Redding, Calif., Heidi (Greg Herbruck) of Grand Rapids, Anne (Mark Leeman) of Sofia, Bulgaria and his 39 grandchildren. Lloyd was raised in Holland, Mich. as the youngest of 12 children and is survived by Harriet Kempers of Albuquerque, N.M., Geneva Marcus of Sacramento, Calif., Jean Blevins of Arlington, Va., Yutz Heneveld of Enterprise, Ala. and Barbara Dalman of Holland, Mich. He lived a full life and found enjoyment in his faith in Jesus Christ, his family, patent law and University of Michigan football. After graduating from Holland High School, he enlisted in the Air Force and served our country during World War II. He then attended the University of Michigan where "Dutch" was a football standout on the 1947 and 1948 National Championship teams and earned All-Big Ten honors. He was also a member of Sigma Phi fraternity. He graduated in 1950 with an engineering degree from Michigan and went on to earn his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1953. He realized his boyhood ambition by becoming a patent attorney and eventually joined Peter Price in forming the patent law firm, Price, Heneveld, Cooper, DeWitt and Litton. He was a longtime member at Central Reformed Church in Grand Rapids where he taught Sunday school, served as deacon and elder, and chaired many committees. Other community services included being an active member of Grand Rapids Jaycees, Rotary Club (past president, GR chapter) and American, Michigan and Grand Rapids Bar Associations, serving on the Forest Hills school board and coaching little league baseball. Lloyd and Marie moved to Torch Lake in 1990 and enjoyed the beautiful views and many friendships that they developed there. They became members at Church in the Hills. This past summer they sold their home and moved back to Grand Rapids where they could be closer to family. Lloyd, Dad, Grandpa will always be remembered for the strong, quiet way in which he led by example. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Central Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Next summer, a memorial service will be held at Church in the Hills. Hail to this Victor.

Billy D. Jackson

Billy Dane Jackson, 46, of Kalkaska, died Tues., Nov. 21, 2000, at Munson Medical Center. Billy resided in Arizona until eight years ago, when he moved to Kalkaska. He served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the DAV. He assisted with the American Legion Bingo and newsletter, and also with Boy Scout Troop 629. Billy was born in Florence, Ala., Sept. 6, 1954, to Billy E. and Lois Pilkinton Jackson. On July 25, 1981, at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, he married Paula Domke, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by sons Billy D. Jackson II of Traverse City and Adam Jackson at home; daughter Nestina Jackson at home; his parents of Alto, Ga.; brother Bruce Jackson, also of Alto, Ga.; sisters Marilyn Head of Jasper, Ga.; Jeanine Tatum of Lula, Ga.; and Leisa Barger of Alto, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were Nov. 28 at Bear Lake Christian Church; Pastor David Rosenberg officiated. Military rites were presented by the American Legion and VFW. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Vernon LaLone

Vernon LaLone, 88, of Williamsburg, died Sat., Nov. 25, 2000, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. He had been a resident of Williamsburg since 1961 moving from Florida. Mr. LaLone was born June 4, 1912, in Acme Township, the son of Brenton and Maude (Smith) LaLone. He married Twila McLain March 24, 1930, in Traverse City. He was a lifetime member of the Elk Rapids Sportsman's Club, former member of Eagle's Club in Detroit. He loved fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and singing. He was very outgoing; mentored to many young farmers. Mr. LaLone owned and operated LaLone Fruit Farms of Williamsburg for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He was also a lathing and plaster contractor for 20 years. Surviving are sons Eugene (Bonnie) LaLone of Williamsburg, Romaine LaLone of Seabring, Fla., and Ronald (Elaine) LaLone of Bellaire; sister Marie Toner of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Leonard; brothers Jessipe, Steve and Ralph; and sister Revella Nickerson. Funeral services will be Wed., Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; Pastor James Weber officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Elk Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Rose M. Lounsbery

Rose M. Lounsbery, 94, of Kalkaska, died Thurs., Nov. 23, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mrs. Lounsbery was born in Isabella County Nov. 27, 1905, to Joseph and Mary Gross Endres. She married Howard Lounsbery in Flint Nov. 10, 1924. He preceded her in death March 28, 1980. Mrs. Lounsbery had been a resident of Kalkaska County since 1940, and was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, the Boardman Area Senior Citizens Club and the Kalkaska County Commission on Aging. She enjoyed playing bingo, berry picking, crocheting and reading. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were sisters Dorie Endres, Katherine Endres, Helen Endres, Elizabeth Toops, Christine Keller, Irene Schutt and Lucille Rigby; and brothers Willie Endres, Frank Endres and Raymond Endres. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 27 at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Holtz as celebrant. Burial was in Lodi cemetery, Kalkaska County. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Eduard Roy Lueck

Eduard Roy Lueck, 62, of Kewadin, died Nov. 19, 2000, while visiting family in North Carolina. Eduard was born March 29, 1938, in Wayne County, the son of the late Gerhard and Erna (Schumann) Lueck. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids. He served in the United States Navy and was retired from Empire National Bank. He is survived by his wife Arlene Wierman Lueck; sons Derek Lueck of Oakland, Calif. and Dane (Robin) Lueck of Fort Collins, Colo.; daughters Erin (Jeff) Nelson of White Cloud and Renel (Paul) Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; brother Horst (Eunice) Lueck of Seneca, S.C.; and grandchildren Cheyenne, Shawnee and Eduard Nelson. Memorial services will be Fri., Dec. 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. The time of the services will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate Memorial and Tributes Program, Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, IL 60678-3968 or Cherryland Humane Society, 3201 LaFranier Road., Traverse City, MI 49686 or the donor's choice.

Vera Vargason

Vera Brooks Vargason, 85, passed away Nov. 10, 2000. Vera was born in Hoxeyville June 20, 1915. She met her husband of 66 years, Leonard Vargason of Rapid City, when he was serving with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Hoxeyville. They live in Flint, spending their summers at the Vargason homestead in Rapid City. Surviving are her husband Leonard; daughters Shirley (Don) Frost of Alden, Phyliss (Jerry) Sanders of Lapeer, Wanda (Marshall) Delay of Lennon, Margaret (Joe) Frame of Birch Run, Connie (Jim) Stevenson of Grand Blanc, Donna (Ron) Kellaway of Grand Blanc; three sisters, two brothers, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by daughter Clarice Tompkins. Funeral services were Nov. 13 at Browns Funeral Home in Flint; Pastor Ray Luke officiated.

Wray Ash

Wray Ash, 78, of Bellaire, died Wed., Jan. 31, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Central Lake, the daughter of Nick N. and Wealtha (Thomas) Prince. On Aug. 31, 1941, in Central Lake, she married Everett L. Ash who preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1996. Wray worked for 10 years as a nurse's aide, and then volunteered for many years at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. She and her husband opened their home to foster children and for 20 years were foster parents to many children. At one time they earned recognition as Michigan's Foster Parents of the Year. A Bellaire resident all of her adult life, she was a member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. Beside her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and a half brother, Nick Prince. Surviving are daughters Patricia W. Savant of Bellaire and Mary E. (Theodore) Papademetriou of Tampa, Fla.; sons Rev. Thomas E. (Jean) Ash of Spring Hill, Fla., Gerald L. (Terrie) Ash of Fowlerville, and Christopher M. (Ronda) Ash of Boca Raton, Fla.; sister Sr. Mary Chris Prince of Racine, Wis.; half brother August (Chico) Prince of Central Lake; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and two on the way! A memorial service was Tues., Feb. 6 at the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Brown officiating. A second memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m., Sun., Feb. 18 at Shady Hill United Methodist Church, Spring Hill, Fla. (727)856-2948) with Rev. Thomas E. Ash officiating. Interment will be in the Spring in Lakeview cemetery, Bellaire. Memorials may be directed to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, Bellaire Community United Methodist Church or Shady Hill United Methodist Church. The Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.

Walter T. Azelton

Walter Thomas Azelton, 70, of Marion, died Feb. 3 at the home of his daughter, Sally Bird. He was born April 2, 1930, in Flint, to Claude and Ruth (Crocker) Azelton. He married Agnes C. McClure on Feb. 8, 1947, in Flint. She died June 5, 1982. On April 12, 1985, he married Luceine V. DuCap in Saginaw. She preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 2000. Mr. Azelton attended school in Mt. Morris, Grand Rapid School of Bible and Music, and Cedine Bible College. He became an ordained minister in 1989. He formed the Redding Baptist Church in Temple and attended the Marion Baptist Church and the Garfield Country Church in Kalkaska County. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 3, 1947, and received an honorable discharge on June 2, 1950. He enlisted in the United States Navy on May 28, 1951, in the USS WASP and received an honorable discharge on May 18, 1954. He worked at General Motors Corporation for several years and had worked in carpentry and the ministry. He lived in the Marion and Kalkaska area and enjoyed reading, golf, traveling, gardening and spending time with his family. Surviving are sons Ron (Sandy) Azelton of Grand Blanc, Carl (Connie) Azelton of Royal Oak and Bob (Ronda) Azelton of McBain; daughters Sally (Bill) Bird of Marion, Pat (Doug) Hussett of Wyandotte, and Nancy (Steve) Wilson of Conifer, Colo.; stepchildren Dorothy (Mark) Drouillard of Ypsilanti and David DuCap of Phoenix, Ariz; brothers George Azelton of Flint and Archie Azelton of California; sister Bessie Huff of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; brothers Bob, Hubert and Claude; and sisters Edna, Jo and Ona. Funeral services were held at Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain Feb. 6 with the Rev. Dennis Williams officiating. Burial was at Vogel Center cemetery. A military graveside service was held by Marion Blue Mountain Post 6015. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Wilma Jean Childs

Wilma Jean Childs, 74, of Kalkaska, died Mon., Feb. 5, 2001, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mrs. Childs was born in Detroit on Jan. 18, 1927, to Louis and Flossie Hayner Risdon. She married Chester H. Childs in Unionville. He preceded her in death in 1969. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by the Square D Company in Clearwater, Fla. for 15 years. She was a member of Wisner United Methodist Church in Wisner. Surviving are her daughter Katherine (Clifford) Maxwell of Bainbridge, Ga.; grandson Bryan Maxwell and granddaughter Tiffany Maxwell, both of Bainbridge; nephew Douglas Risdon; and nieces Shirley Bush, Hope Spears and Mary Wright. Brothers Russell and Vern Risdon preceded her in death. No services are planned. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Helen M. Clark

Helen M. Clark, 64, of Central Lake died Thurs., Feb. 1, 2001, at home. She was born on April 22, 1936, in Kewadin, the daughter of Alva D. and Amy B. (Ebenstein) McKay. She was employed by Texas Instruments for many years before retiring in 1998. She attended the Lighthouse Ministries Church in Central Lake. She resided in Central Lake most of her life. She is survived by daughters Virginia E. (Jay) Springstead of Ellsworth, Vicki J. Ford of Detroit, and Debra A. (Sam) Mullens of Central Lake; and son LeRoy M. Clark of Mancelona. Also surviving are brother Clayton (Linda) McKay of Central Lake; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were Wed., Feb. 7 at the Lighthouse Ministries Church in Central Lake; Rev. Bryan Shook officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to the Guiding Eyes of the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Rd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598-9986. Arrangements have been handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Bernice A. Watrous Haver

Bernice A. Watrous Haver, 80, of Bellaire, died Thurs., Feb. 1, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Bernice was born April 17, 1920, in Bellaire, the daughter of Jeremiah and Hazel (Marshall) Thomas. She resided in Bellaire most of her life, and had worked for Mt. Clemens Metal Products in Mancelona and the Traverse City State Hospital for many years. Surviving are children Carol (Joe) Chanda of Bellaire, Millie (Willie) Lee of Bellaire, Dave (Edna) Watrous of Bellaire, Dennis Watrous of West Palm Beach, Fla., Robert (Bonnie) Watrous of Bellaire, Shirley (Guy) DeWitt of Bellaire, Edward (Patsy) Watrous of Bellaire; sisters Louella Watrous of Bellaire, Della Dixon of Arizona, Joyce Dittrich of Oklahoma; brother Robert Thomas of Grand Rapids; 27 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husbands Earl T. Watrous in 1973 and Robert Haver in 1994. She was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Eloda Trumble, Roswell Thomas, Rose Thomas, Howard Thomas, Herman Thomas, Jerry Thomas, Andrew Thomas and Helen Bates. Funeral services were Sat., Feb. 3 at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Pastor Bruce Standfest officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery, Bellaire.
