Gilbert M. Heller

Gilbert M. Heller was called home to the Lord Jan. 16, 2001, in Traverse City after a brief illness. The son of Henry and Louise (Hoseley) Heller, Gilbert was born Jan. 17, 1908, in Fenwood, Wis. He came to Bay City in 1930 and was in business for many years as part owner of City Dairy. He is survived by his beloved wife Adelalde Kamenick Heller, to whom he was married for 70 years. They moved to Elk Rapids in 1996. Gilbert was an active member of St. Mary's Church in Bay City and was a fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 414 in Bay City. He was devoted to the work of the St. Vincent dePaul Society for over 60 years. He also was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Surviving are daughters Doris (William) Monroe of Detroit; Elaine (Donald) Glowicki of Elk Rapids; Ruth (Gilbert) Bolduc of Kentwood; sons Rev. James G. Heller of Bay City, Thomas (Betsy) Heller of Columbus, Ind.; grandchildren Margaret (Richard) Harris, Jane (Kevin) Hetner, Kathleen (John) Lau, Donald (Diane) Glowicki, Mary (Douglas) Coates, Jeanne Glowicki and fiance Michael Tomich, Barbara (Robert) Murphy, Carolyn Bolduc, Sara Bolduc and Stephen Bolduc; great-grandchildren Joshua and Ann Lau, Matthew, Christopher and Amy Glowicki, Andrew and Elise Coates, Ellery Kayte, Reid Murphy, and Jennifer and Michael Harding. Also surviving are sisters Hazel Graveen, Marion Spindler and Armella (Calvin) Gordee of Wisconsin; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son Ronald (twin to Ruth); brothers Melvin, Anton and William Heller; sisters Mabel Schuster, Margaret Schwarze and Irene Galbraith. He quietly devoted his life to helping others and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Gilbert was buried in St. Patrick's cemetery in Bay City Sat., Jan. 20, 2001.

Donna J. Jackson

Mrs. Donna J. Jackson, 85, loving mother and grandmother, passed over to join her husband Mon., Jan. 29, 2001, at her home near South Boardman. Mrs. Jackson had been a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County and retired in 1978 from Kalkaska Memorial Health Center after 30 years as a lab and X-ray technician. She was a member of Bear Lake Christian Church, the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Auxiliary and the Kalkaska County Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening and genealogy. She was born in Crawford County on Jan. 27, 1916, the daughter of George and Eva Benedict Kniss. She married Robert Jackson in Clare County on April 14, 1935. He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1996. Surviving are sons Fay (Edna) Jackson of Kalkaska, Clifford (Kay) Jackson of Gladstone, and Clesson (Mary) Jackson of Grand Rapids; daughters Roberta (Jerry) Bruinekool of Grand Rapids, Jeanne (Dick) Lee, Patricia (Will) Rodgers and Phyllis Jackson, all of Kalkaska, and Annabelle (Donald) Haviland of Rockford; brothers Gordon (Mildred) Kniss, Boyd (Ruth) Kniss, and Dale (Ruth) Kniss, all of Kalkaska, Wayne (Beulah) Kniss of Gainesville, Texas, and Daryl (Maxine) Kniss of Traverse City; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter. Funeral services were Feb. 1 at Bear Lake Christian Church; Pastor David Rosenberg officiated. Burial was in Lodi cemetery, Kalkaska County. Memorial gifts may be made to Munson Hospice or the Bear Lake Christian Church. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Marvel M. Lantzer

Marvel M. Lantzer, 88, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County, died Thurs., Feb. 1, 2001, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was a member of the Kalkaska Church of Christ, and she enjoyed sewing and oil painting. She was born in Kalkaska County on April 3, 1912, the daughter of John and Bertha McCool Tanner. On June 29, 1931, in Rapid City, she married Jay Lantzer, who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Bruce (Joyce) Lantzer and Dale (Jeanne) Lantzer, both of Kalkaska; daughters Melba (Gary) Golden of Kalkaska and Norma (Lyle) North of Coopersville; sisters Nellie Hamilton of Kalkaska and Josephine Aldridge of Cadillac; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three and great-great-grandchildren. Brothers Thad, Milo and Gene Tanner, preceded her in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilderness Christian Assembly.

Mary Lou Lark

Mary Lou Lark, 74, died Feb. 2, 2001, at her home in Elk Rapids. She was born March 25, 1926, in Warsaw, Ind., the daughter of William and Marcella "Sally" (Clow) Butler. On Sept. 3, 1949, she married Robert Lark at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Mary Lou was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband Robert; daughters Pamela (Doug) Scherrer of Elk Rapids, Colleen (Aarn) Rosen of Howell, Susan (Terry) Wade of Colorado and Mary Adelaide (Patrick) Gallagher of Kingsley; sons Robert (Mary Beth) Lark of Royal Oak, David (Linda) Lark of Kingsley and Brian (Carla) Lark of Elk Rapids; brother William (Joyce) Butler of Shepherd; and sister Rosanne (Keith) Hubbell of Elk Rapids; 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Christopher Robert Kunze-Wade. Rite of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 7 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids. Interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Elk Rapids, in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Munson Medical Center. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

A.H. "Bill" Muha

A.H. "Bill" Muha, 75, of Charlevoix, died Jan. 28, 2001, at his home. Bill was born on June 19, 1925, in Bloomingdale, Mich., the son of Michael and Anna (Sikora) Muha. During World War II he served with the United States Navy achieving the rank of BM2. After the war he owned and operated Ellsworth Lumber Yard until 1978 when he retired and moved to Charlevoix. Bill was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Leslie T. Shapton Post 226, and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1153, all in Charlevoix. Survivors include wife Jean of Ellsworth; children Wayne (Sue) Muha of Kalamazoo, Gerald (Diane) Muha of Utah, Michael (Jill) Muha of Wixom, Jeffrey Muha of Dallas, Texas, David (Deborah) Muha of Centerville, Ohio, and Mary (PJ) Ewing of New York, N.Y.; brothers Michael (Elizabeth) Muha of Lincoln Park, William (Mary) Muha of Norfolk, Virg.; sisters Mary Guernsey and Helen Hildebrandt, both of Kalamazoo, and Gloria Horvatch of North Carolina; and six grandchildren. Mass of the Resurrection was 11 a.m., Wed., Jan. 31 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlevoix; the Reverend Thomas A. Neis will officiated. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Calvary cemetery in East Jordan. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Building Fund.

Mabel Soule

Mabel I. Dingman Soule, 98, of Kalkaska, died Fri., Feb. 2, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Soule resided in Flint, Flushing, and Gaylord until 1952, when she and her husband moved to Kalkaska County, where they owned and operated Dingman's Bar until 1965. She was a member of the Women's National Bear Hunt Association, and was involved in many civic affairs, including the erection of the National Trout Memorial and the construction of the Bear Lake Community Center. She was a former member of the Kalkaska Area Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed gardening and outdoor activities. She was born in East Tawas on March 25, 1902, the daughter of John and Ethel Goodale Martindale. She was married to Earl Dingman in 1920, and he preceded her in death in 1962. In 1965, she was united in marriage with Russel Soule, who survives. Also surviving are grandchildren Gary (Susan) Hirt of Kalkaska, Barbara (Jack) Martin of Traverse City, Christine (Keith) Nash of Rapid City and Rick (Susan) Hirt of Williamsburg; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Margaret Hirt, an infant son, and her brothers and sisters. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sat., Feb. 10, 2001, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Inurnment will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Elk Rapids. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Mercy Hospice, Grayling, Mich.

Jerry L. Wilkerson

Jerry L. Wilkerson, 67, a resident of Mancelona for the past three years, died Thurs., Feb. 1, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Mr. Wilkerson was born in Centerville, Iowa, on April 12, 1933, son of the late Leon and Georgia Bryant Wilkerson. He married Kay Clarkson in Las Vegas, Nev., on Aug. 31, 1992. Prior to moving to Mancelona, he had resided in Algonquin, Ill., where he had been employed as an engineer for the U.S. Government. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Council 7419 and the Grand Traverse Assembly. He enjoyed nature and woodworking. Surviving are his wife Kay; sons Jerry Wilkerson of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Jim Wilkerson of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter Debbie Vicicondi of Illinois; and two grandchildren. Funeral service were Feb. 5 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Father Patrick Barrett officiated. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska. A Knights of Columbus Rosary was recited Feb. 4 at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made for the wishes of the family.

Harriet I. Allen

Harriet I. Allen, 84, of Kalkaska, died Sun., March 18, 2001, at her home. She was born in Kalkaska County on Aug. 24, 1916, to Seymour and Nellie (Lewis) Soper. She married Kenneth Allen Nov. 20, 1948, in South Boardman. He died on March 3, 1996. Mrs. Allen was a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and wildlife. Surviving are son Terry (Janet) Sieting of Kalkaska; daughters Willodean Golden of Kalkaska, and Judy Hoek of Grand Rapids; brother Donald Soper of Kalkaska; sisters Nellie Hall of Kalkaska and Elva Lyons of California; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sons Larry and Dennis Sieting and Val Gene Allen; daughter Winona Allen; grandson Larry Golden; and great-grandson Kyle Fisher. Funeral services were held March 21 at the Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska; Rev. Paul Karges officiated. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska.

Ronald L. Board

Ronald L. Board, 69, of Machesney Park, Ill., died at 3:30 p.m. Wed., Feb. 28, 2001. Born Aug. 21, 1931, in Rockford, Ill. married to the former Marion Shuey in Rockford April 24, 1954. Navy reserve veteran serving 1950-1958. Retired electrician. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Torch Lake in Alden since 1962. Ron enjoyed many summers with his family and Torch Lake friends the Keillors, Dutkowskis, Leslee Jakeway and Robert and Betty Van Vleck. Inurnment in Sunset Memorial Gardens Machesney Park. Memorials to Grass River Natural Area, P.O. Box 231, Bellaire, MI 49615.

Esther R. Fifelski

Esther R. Fifelski, 69, died Sun., March 11, 2001, at her home in Lakes of the North near Mancelona. She was born on Sept. 13, 1931, in Detroit, the daughter of Stanley and Annette (Dembinska) Bartkowiak. On April 6, 1968, in Inkster, she married Frank Fifelski. They vacationed in the Lakes of the North since the 1970s and permanently moved to the area in 1981. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. She enjoyed watching sports and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. She also enjoyed working word search puzzles, playing bingo and casinos. Esther is survived by husband Frank of Lakes of the North; children Yvonne of Allen Park, Delphine of Allen Park, Sandra (Kenneth) of Livonia, Daniel of Wayne, and Kenny (Donna) of Bellaire; grandchildren Matthew and his wife, Kristen, Andrea, Michael, Amy, and Katelyn; great-granddaughter Victoria; brother Gerard "Gerry" of Detroit; and sisters Rosie of Detroit and Theresa of Westland. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Kenneth, brother Stanley and sister Julie. Funeral services were Sat., March 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona; Father R. Dale Magoon officiated. Interment was in St. Anthony Catholic cemetery in Mancelona. The family received friends on Fri., March 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. A rosary service was said Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Straits.

John Hopp Jr.

John "Jack" Hopp Jr., 78, of Fife Lake, died March 12, 2001. Mr. Hopp resided in Walled Lake until 1986, when he moved to Fife Lake. He was a retired tool and die maker, and served with the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking and gardening. He was born in Detroit on March 5, 1923, the son of John and Ethel Svatos Hopp. On June 21, 1948, in Detroit, he was married to Muriel Ruth Hill. She died on Oct. 28, 1979. Surviving are daughter Darlene Walker of Walled Lake; grandchildren Todd and Heather Walker; and his dog Rusty. A sister Darline preceded him in death. Funeral services were March 14 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; E. Dan Johnson, pastor of Kalkaska Church of Christ, officiated. Cremation followed funeral services.
