Lydia Mary Hunt

Lydia Mary Hunt, 95, of Traverse City, died March 16, 2001, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. She lived near Kewadin for 22 years, and the rest of her life was spent in Traverse City. She was born Sept. 22, 1905 in South Milton Township, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (LaCross) Bussa. She first married Harry Russell in Elk Rapids May 1, 1925. She later married E.T. (Tom) Smith of Boon Nov. 14, 1958. She married Kenneth Hunt on June 2, 1967, in Utica. Lydia was a housewife, and worked as an attendant at Traverse City State Hospital. She also worked at Cunningham Drug Store in Traverse City. She is survived by daughter Bonnie (Marcel) Carpenter of Traverse City; stepdaughter Muriel (Robert) Peavler of Traverse City; sister Velma Goodman of Elk Rapids; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry Russell in 1958, Tom Smith in 1965, and Kenneth Hunt in 1982; stepdaughter, Bobbi Darling of Kalamazoo; sisters Lena Hockridge, Melinda Munro, Amy Hanna and Harriet Barnes; and brothers Ernest, George, Frank and Archie Bussa. A gathering of friends and family will take place Wed., March 28, from 1 to 3 p.m., with a sharing of memories at 2 p.m. at Community Hall on Manor Lane at the Town and Country Mobile Home Park in Traverse City. Interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Elk Rapids. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Leonard T. Iliff

Leonard T. Iliff, 84, of Kalkaska, a retired welder, died Mon., March 19, 2001, at Munson Medical Center. Mr. Iliff resided in Watervliet until 30 years ago when he moved to Kalkaska. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Clark Equipment Company. He was a member of the New Life Assembly of God. He was born in Chicago on March 6, 1917, the son of Thomas and Emma Bancroft Iliff. He married Velma Bybee in South Bend, Ind. on Feb. 21, 1936. She died on Dec. 15, 1984. On Dec. 28, 1985, in Kalkaska, he was united in marriage with Pearl Miller who preceded him in death on March 17, 1993. Surviving are sons Robert (Joan) Iliff of Watervliet, William (Norma) Iliff of South Haven, and Edwin (Cassie) Iliff of Jackson; stepsons, Ezra (Sally) Miller and Jerry (Cheryl) Miller both of Kalkaska; stepdaughter, Anna (Jim) Lawless of Kalkaska; mother-in-law Anna Kill of Kalkaska; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Brothers Roy, Marion and Howard, and sister Neva, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thurs., March 22, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Edwin Iliff will officiate. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens in St. Joseph. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be directed to New Life Assembly of God.

George J. Laufersky Sr.

May 30, 1937-March 15, 2001

Husband, father, grandfather, teacher of experiences - George was born in Grand Rapids, the son of Walter J. Laufersky and Helen (Breitenstein) Laufersky, who preceded him in death. He lived for many years on Torch Lake. He considered The Villages his home, which he shared with his wife Connie. At The Villages, he had the opportunity to work with people he loved and respected, and who loved and respected him. Teaching people through sharing his experiences was his passion. When he could help someone grow and learn, he was happy. Mentoring a sales team at The Villages gave great substance to his life. His greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his wife Connie; children Debra (Denny), George (Carol), Lori (Sonny), Connie, Greg, Danny, Todd (Karen), Kelly (Rob); grandchildren Christopher, George, Erin, Geramie, Christopher Todd, Megan, Geoffry, Sarah, Harry, Sidney, Danielle, Haley, Samantha, Drew, Alexandra, Morgan and Samuel; and his only brother, Ralph W. Latifersky, and his family. Grandpa George - we love you and you will forever be missed. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at Beyers, Funeral Home. Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at North Lake Presbyterian Church.

Doris J. Sauve

Doris J. Sauve, 80, of Fife Lake, died Wed., March 14, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Sauve was born in South Boardman on Sept. 13, 1920, to Clyde and Nina (Hart) Johnson. On Feb. 3, 1978, in South Branch, she married Keith Sauve. She had been a resident of Kalkaska County since 1984 when she moved from Ogemaw County. She was a 1938 graduate of Kalkaska High School and retired from Ford Motor Co. after 15 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and enjoyed collecting pigs. Surviving are her husband Keith; sister Eula Gilbert of South Boardman; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Kenneth Johnson, preceded her in death. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Russel V. Soule

Russel V. Soule, 102, a resident of Kalkaska since 1967, died Wed., March 14, 2001, at his home. He was born in Romeo on Sept. 30, 1898, the son of Benjamin and Maude Dunlap Soule. He married Mabel Dingman in 1966, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2001. Mr. Soule resided in Romeo until moving to Kalkaska County. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He served in France with the United States Army during World War I, and received the Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor award, which is the highest French military decoration. Surviving are son Benjamin (Elaine) Soule of Florida; sister Mildred Stafford of Troy; 11 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Russel's body has been donated to the Michigan State University College of Medicine, and no services are planned at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Amicare Homecare and Hospice, 125 Michigan Avenue, Grayling MI 49738. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

James D. Stackhouse

James D. Stackhouse, 69, died March 26, 2001, at his home in Elk Rapids. He had been spending his summers here since 1965, moving to Elk Rapids permanently from Milford in 1991. James was born in Wyandotte March 23, 1932, the son of Andrew and Helen (Culleson) Stackhouse. He married Roberta "Bobbie" Brown Aug. 24, 1957, in Trenton. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a professor of Michigan History and Behavioral Sciences at Oakland Community College, Highland Lakes Campus from 1966 until his retirement in 1991. Prior to that, he taught at Trenton High School. He was a graduate of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. James was an avid reader who enjoyed reading to his grandchildren. He was also a backyard bird watcher. Survivors include daughters Amy (Ken Ely) Zimmerman of Howell and Julie (Joel) Smith of Rudyard; sons David (Danielle) Stackhouse of Commerce and Eric Stackhouse of Chicago, Ill.; sister Shirley (Jim) Rogers of St. Louis, Mo.; brother Andy "Jack" (Betty) Stackhouse of Hartwell, Ga.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Roberta, in 1999. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Robert Edward Westlund

Robert Edward Westlund, 42, of Elk Rapids, died March 17, 2001, of injuries from an automobile accident. He was born June 9, 1959, in Traverse City, the son of C. Robert and Marlene (Youmans) Westlund. Paternal grandparents are Earl and Opal Westlund. Maternal grandparents are Ed and Mollie Youmans. Uncles are Doyle and James Westlund. A lifelong resident of Elk Rapids, Rob graduated from Elk Rapids High School in 1977. Rob loved to cook and had been employed through the years at T.J. Charlies, Rainbow, Torch Riviera and, for the past several years, at the Kountry Kitchen in Alden. He and friend Jim Moore formed "The Staggering Odds," a musical duo with Lisa Olin as vocalist. They played at various places in the area and he loved it. Rob enjoyed hunting, fishing and baking for his family and friends. He will be sorely missed. Survivors include his mother Marlene Youmans; brother Richard Westlund; aunts Dorothy (Carl) Merillat and Marcia (Floyd) Merillat; Uncle Bill (Donna) Youmans and Aunt Betty Carpenter, and numerous cousins. Services will be held Fri., March 23 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be directed to the Elk Rapids Rescue Unit or the Elk Rapids Fire Department. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Charles O. Williams

Charles Oden Williams, 73, formerly of Flint and Elk Rapids, passed away March 20, 2001, at his home in Lake City. Charles was born in Flint Jan. 30, 1928, the son of John and Cora (Bates) Williams. He married Gloria Muma in Flint Jan. 30, 1971. Charles was a veteran of the United States Navy. He joined the Flint Police Department in 1951 and retired in 1974, when he moved to Lake City. He managed the Elk River Motel on Ames Street for 10 years (1984-1994), living in Elk Rapids during the summer seasons. He enjoyed his retirement in Lake City. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Charles is survived by wife Gloria; daughter Christine (Steve) Rogers of Burton; sons Rick Williams of Flint and Paul (Myra) Williams of Grand Rapids; stepchildren Craig (Sarah) Leavitt of Swartz Creek and Mark (Kathleen) Lloyd of Cerritos, Calif.; sister Sally (Andy) Lapak of Birch Run, Mich., sister-in-law Carol Williams of Flint; seven grandsons and two granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Mercy Amicare Hospice Services of Cadillac. Arrangements were made by the Young Funeral Home of Lake City.

Pauline L. Alexander

Pauline L. Alexander, 71, of Kalkaska, died Sun., April 1, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Pauline resided in Lansing until 30 years ago when she moved to Kalkaska. She had been employed as a housekeeper and at Big Boy Restaurant and Turtle Creek Casino. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. She was born in Lansing on Feb. 4, 1930, the daughter of Newton and Mable Godfrey Flewelling. On May 11, 1953, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., she married Pearl Alexander who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter Sue Ann (David) Tracey of Kalkaska; brother Floyd Flewelling of Lansing; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Agnes Perry, and brother Dorm Flewelling, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thurs., April 5 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Pastor William Kuiper will officiate. Burial will be in Oliver Township cemetery, Kalkaska County.

Dorothy B. Bellingham

Dorothy B. Bellingham, 83, of Belltower Ave., Deltona, Fla., passed away March 27, 2001. She was a homemaker, born in Coldwater, Mich., and a winter resident of Deltona since 1981. She spent her summers in Elk Rapids. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Deltona, Meals on Wheels and a charter member of the Deltona Golf and Country Club. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Earl; sons David Bellingham of Elk Rapids, Dr. Rick Bellingham of Basking Ridge, N.J. and Dr. Daniel Bellingham of Statesville, N.C.; brother Dexter Tiefenthal of Houghton; and 10 grandchildren. Memorial services will be at First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids this summer. Arrangements were entrusted to Baldauff Funeral Home in Orange City, Fla.

Ethel Mae Brooks

Ethel Mae Brooks, 64, of Central Lake, died Sat., March 31, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Ethel was born Oct. 16, 1936, in Middleton, the daughter of Lon and Myrtle (Topper) Curtis. She moved to Central Lake in 1990 from Carson City. On Jan. 25, 1957, in Crystal Township, she married Eugene E. Brooks who survives. Also surviving are children Debra (Michael) Miller of Carson City, Eugene Jr. of Anaheim, Calif., Michael of Anaheim, Calif., Douglas (Linda) of Alma, Kathy (Jaremy) Richardson of Buffalo, Wy.; brother Clarence (Nina) Curtis of Branch; sisters Donna Morrison of Middleton and Flossie Pendall of Carson City; 15 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Fremont Curbs, Don and John Johnson. Funeral services were Tues., April 1 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Rev. Estel Clark officiated. Interment will take place in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township.
