Verna L. Ellis

Verna L. Ellis, 94, formerly of Ann Arbor and South Boardman, died Thurs., April 26, 2001, in Waynesville, Ohio. She was a member of the REOG Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Community of Christ Church and was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was born April 14, 1907 in Eagleville, Mo. to Edward G. and Zelta (Braybrooks) Harp. Her husband Fred Ellis preceded her in death in 1979. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law F. Richard and Nancy Ellis of Waynesville, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law JoAnn and Donald Holzhauer of Beaver Island; grandchildren Stephen P. and Rebecca J. Holzhauer, Scott Ellis, and DeeAnn Gibbons; and 12 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were May 2 at the Boardman Township cemetery, South Boardman. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Stubbs-Conner Funeral of Waynesville, Ohio was in charge of the arrangements.

Wesley Hetherington

Wesley Hetherington, 91, of Central Lake, died Sun., April 29, 2001, at the Brookside Adult Foster Care Home in Central Lake. Wesley had resided in Central Lake since 1982. Prior to moving to Central Lake he had resided in Florida. He was employed by Garber Buick Car Dealership in Saginaw for many years. On April 12, 1982 in Bonita Springs, Fla. he married Betty Gallap who preceded him in death in 1996. Also preceding him in death were his first wife Ruth B., and a brother LeRoy Hetherington. Surviving are a stepdaughter Marcia A. (George) McKay of Cumberland, R.I.; stepson James L. (Eunice) Gallap of Boyne City; niece Joann Lacy of Central Lake; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Wed., May 2 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Rev. Estel Clark officiated. Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw.

Irene J. Kilborn

Irene J. Kilborn, 76, of Fife Lake, died Sat., April 28, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Kilborn formerly resided in Belding, and retired from General Motors in 1975. She had lived in Fife Lake for the past five years. She was born in Milliken Nov. 22, 1924, to Earl and Pearl Stevens Heaven. She married Frederick Kilborn in Ionia Dec. 12, 1942. He survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by son Fred (Pat) Kilborn of Crystal; daughters Marilyn (Steve) Devers of Ithaca, Donna (Keith) Simon of Belding, and Shirley (Tracey) Morrison of Ozark, Ala.; sister Maxine Ornelas of Harrison; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her brother Donald and half sister Goldie Chorley preceded her in death. Memorial services will be held at a later time. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Joyce I. Long

Joyce Ione Long, 73, a resident of Kalkaska since 1973, died Wed., April 25, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Long resided in Alden prior to moving to Kalkaska. She enjoyed gardening, watching wildlife, hunting, fishing and garage sales. Born in Custer Township of Antrim County, she is the daughter of Oney and Freida Authorson Lanning. She married Samuel Long in Kalkaska on June 1, 1973. He survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Connie (Brad) Raby and Pam (Kelly) Countryman, both of Bellaire, and Debbie (Wayne) Bubar of Fife Lake; sister Arlene Belanger of Williamsburg; and grandchildren Stephanie Murden, Eric Belcher, Jamie Molski, Howard Countryman and Hanna Countryman, several nieces and nephews. Brothers Ward, Lyle and Wayne, and sisters Hazel, Ethel, Dana, and Leota, preceded her in death. Memorial services were April 30 at Kalkaska Church of Christ; E. Dan Johnson officiated. Memorial gifts may be directed to North Country Hospice. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Sheldon Ross Long

Sheldon Ross Long, 62, of Grayling, died at Mercy Hospital in Grayling April 24, 2001, after a 30-year battle with immunosuppressive rheumatoid arthritis. Mr. Long was born Dec. 24, 1938 in Ernest, Penn. to Roy Sinclair Long and Lena Beulah (Martz) Long Wirth. His family moved from Pennsylvania to Detroit in the 1950s where he attended Cass Technical High School. Not long after, he was inducted into the United States Army and served in the Military Police with duty assignments at Fort McClellan, Ala. and in Germany. He received an honorable discharge in 1959 having attained the rank of Private First Class. Following his military service, he worked for years in investment casting before arthritis disabled him. Long lived in Grayling for more than five years. Before moving to Grayling, he also resided in Warren, Fraser and Mt. Clemens. He was a lifelong learner, forever seeking knowledge of how everything worked or was built. He also loved to work crossword puzzles, play Scrabble, collect coins, and devise methods and devices to make his life easier as his arthritis grew worse. Preceding him in death were his parents, and brothers Leslie and Malyn. He is survived by his former wife and friend, Lynda (Speelman) Long of Uniontown, Penn.; daughters Kimberly (Guy) Gaskell of St. Louis, Mo. and Cheryll (Mark) Ruley of Grayling; and son Scott (Julie) Long of Fife Lake. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Bradley and Caitlin Gaskell of St. Louis, Mo.; Karyn and Kimberly Ruley of Grayling; Heather, Heidi, Serena and Sarah Long of Fife Lake; brother-in-law William (Susan) Speelman of Fraser; and sister in-law Margaret (Leslie) Long of Palm Bay, Fla. Memorial services were held at Kalkaska United Methodist Church in Kalkaska on April 28. Pastor Bob Stark officiated. Arrangements were made by Sorenson Funeral Home and Autumn Valley Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one or both of the following: Animal Shelter of Crawford County (note for daily operations), P.O. Box 384, Grayling, MI 49738 or Commission on Aging (note for Meals on Wheels), 308 Lawndale, Grayling, MI 49738.

Harrison "Barry" B. Lucas

Harrison "Harry" B. Lucas, 100, of Mancelona, died on Sat., Dec. 30, 2000. Harry was born July 23, 1900, the son of Frank A. and Eva Lina (Gibson) Lucas in Moberly, Mo. On Feb. 10, 1937, in Belding, Mich., he married Virginia M. Bartlett. She preceded him in death March 1, 1994. He managed the A&P Grocery Stores in Hammond, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois before moving to Mancelona in 1937 where he owned and operated the Lucas Grocery Store and also managed the Standard Oil Station both located in Mancelona. Harry later worked as the head mechanic for the Antrim County Road Commission and enjoyed woodworking and making bowls and candles. He was a member of the Mancelona United Methodist Church. Harry is survived by son Richard L. (Susanne) Lucas of Mancelona; grandchildren Richard L. (Audrey) Lucas Jr. of Bay City, Bruce A. (Annette "Toni") Lucas of Mt. Pleasant, and Thomas W. (Cheryl "Sherry") Lucas of Highland; great-grandchildren Megan Lynn Lucas, Amy Marie Lucas, and Thomas W. Lucas II; niece Ethel Burns of Palm Coast, Fla.; and nephew James (Willa) Burns of Palm Coast, Fla. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. A memorial service will be Fri., May 4 at 11 a.m. at the Mancelona United Methodist Church; Rev. Kathy Steen of the Mancelona United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. The family was served by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona.

Father Joseph Philip Marx

Father Joseph Philip Marx, 73, of Elk Rapids, formerly of Milwaukie, Ore., died April 22, 2001. He was born March 4, 1928, in Spokane, Wash., the son of Theodore M. and Hazel Edna (Williams) Marx. He married the former Eva Louise Wilwerding in San Diego, Calif., Oct. 14, 1967. Father Marx worked as a probation officer and traffic referee prior to becoming a priest. He enjoyed writing, both theological and philosophical, as well as cooking. He loved to talk about logic and loved the movies. His favorite author was Hemingway because of his concise sentence structure. He is survived by his sister Beatrice Bucknam of Milwaukie, Ore.; stepchildren James L. (Carolyn) Moye of McMinnville, Ore.; Kathleen M. (Carlos) Rebelez of Salem, Ore.; Duane M. (Lori) Moye of Troutdale, Ore.; and David W. Moye of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; cousin Charlotte Marx of Elk Rapids; and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Eva Louise Marx; and brothers Father Dennis Marx, Theodore Marx and David Paul Marx. Visitation was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals was celebrated with the Most Reverend Patrick R. Cooney, Bishop of the Dioceses of Gaylord, as celebrant. Internment will be in St. Mary cemetery in New Buffalo. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Building Fund for Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Leone L. Seeley

Leone L. Seeley, 98, a lifelong Traverse City resident, died at home on Sat., April 28. She was born in Alden on Sept. 26, 1902, the daughter of James N. and Mary (Campbell) Lannin. On Dec. 25, 1923, she married Clayton K. Seeley. After graduating from County Normal School in Kalkaska in 1920, she taught in one-room schools for three years. She later continued her education at Northwestern Michigan College, being in the first classes offered at NMC. She graduated from Central Michigan College in Mount Pleasant in 1959. She taught kindergarten at Norris School for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church and the Grand Traverse Area Retired School Personnel. She enjoyed many crafts, including sewing, crocheting, knitting, macrame and ceramics. She was an avid reader, but the loves of her life were her kindergartners, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters Wilma (Carl) Lemcool of Traverse City and Phylis Bozeman of Hudson, Fla.; daughter-in-law Marcia Seeley of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clayton in 1975, son Kenneth in 1989 and brother Russell. Visitation was April 30 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home; Rev. Gerald Bauman officiated at a celebration of Mrs. Seeley's life May 1 at Bible Baptist Church. Burial was at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to Bible Baptist Church or to the Father Fred Foundation.

Verna L. Slack

Verna L. Slack, 85, of East Jordan, formerly of Echo Township, died Tues., April 24, 2001, at the Charlevoix Area Hospital. Verna was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Echo Township, the daughter of Clarence and Grace (McMillan) Murray. She had resided in East Jordan since 1996 previously living in Echo Township and Westland. She was a member of the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church. On Sept. 20, 1938, in Echo Township, she married Fredrick V. Slack who preceded her in death in 1987. Also preceding her in death were brothers Russell, Cecil, Lloyd, Stanley, Dale, Max, Zell, and Rex Murray and sister Joyce Lamreaux. Surviving are children Kenneth L. (Edith) Slack of Flat Rock, Carl G. (Karen) Slack of Alden, Shirley M. (Gordon) Kooistra of Waxhaw, N.C.; brother Leo (Margaret) Murray of Echo Township; eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Fri., April 27 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Rev. David J. Weemhoff officiated. Interment was in Sunset Hill cemetery in East Jordan.

Peggy S. Budrow

Peggy S. Budrow, 43, of Kalkaska, died suddenly Fri., May 4, 2001, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mrs. Budrow had been a longtime resident of Traverse City until moving to Kalkaska in 1974. She enjoyed fishing and her family. She was born in Flint on Jan. 25, 1958. On May 18, 1974, in Traverse City, she married Stephen Budrow. He survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son Matthew (Chris) Budrow of Rapid City; daughter Bobbi Budrow of Cadillac; mother Vera Moldenhauer of Traverse City; sisters Beverly (Steven) Stroh of Minnesota and Marcella (Lewis) Roush of Traverse City; and grandson Jacob. Funeral services were May 7 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; E. Dan Johnson officiated. Cremation followed services. Memorial gifts may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Deborah F. Cady

Deborah F. Cady of Rapid City, died Tues., May 1, 2001, at Munson Medical Center. She was 49. She was born in Ypsilanti on Jan. 3, 1952, to Gene and Ruby Coan. Deborah resided most of her life in the Rapid City and Alden area. Surviving are her children, Randy Cady of Cedar and Stephanie Harrington of Alden; father Gene Coan of Sumner, Ill.; mother Norma Briggs of Grand Rapids; brother Charles Speet of Grand Rapids; and four grandchildren. Memorial services were May 9, 2001, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.

Vernon D. DeWent

Vernon D. DeWent, aged 65 of Free Soil, formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at his home. Vernon was born on September 17, 1935 in Hartford to Paul and Ethel (Nagy) DeWent, and graduated from Mancelona High School. After graduation, he joined the Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict serving with the Army as a Paratrooper. Vernon then joined the Kalamazoo Police Department where he worked for 23 years, 17 years as a detective. In 1971, he was recognized as the State of Michigan Officer of the Year. Vernon was an member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the American Legion in Climax, and was an avid hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his dog and buddy "Bear," and Bear's son "Cubby." On March 22, 1990, Vernon married Jackie (Shulze) Betz in Ludington, and she survives him. He is also survived by his daughter Marsha (Richard) Rice of Irons; stepchildren Darian Betz of Grand Rapids, and Stacy (Betz) and Richard Schmidt of Burbank, Calif.; grandchildren Christopher and Dallas Betz, and Matthew Schmidt; four step-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; sister Pauline Thomas of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and his sister-in-law Lena (Tom) Emry of Intercession City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held for Vernon on Thurs., May 3 at Fort Custer National cemetery in Augusta. There will be no funeral home visitation or services. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Lakeshore Animal Friends, P.O. Box 503, Ludington, MI 49431. Arrangements are being cared for by the Stephens Funeral Chapel in Scottville.
