Loretta E. Swikoski

Loretta E. Swikoski, 86, of Mancelona died Sun., Oct. 21, 2001, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was born on Aug. 24, 1915, in St. Joseph, the daughter of George E. and Florence Mae (Johnson) Kegg. On Oct. 12, 1946, in St. Joseph, she married John V. Swikoski. They moved to Starvation Lake in 1955 from St. Joseph. They owned and operated the Starvation Lake Store until 1966. They later moved to Mancelona. Loretta then worked for several years at ITT in Bellaire. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and St. Anthony Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, bowling, bingo, and church. She also enjoyed volunteering at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She is survived by children David Swikoski, Richard (Betty) Swikoski and Mary (Randy) Buyze, all of Mancelona; daughter-in-law Nona (Kevin) Wells of Kalkaska; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Georgia Runge and June Cuchinski, both of St. Joseph; brothers-in-law Stanley (Dorothy) Swikoski of Berrien Springs and Al Lucker of St. Joseph; and sisters-in-law Virginia Story of South Bend, Ind. and Lucille (Bill) Shearer of Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her husband John V. Swikoski on July 4, 1988; son James Swikoski in 1993; grandsons Martin Swikoski in 1993 and Rueben Swikoski in 1971; great-grandson Joshua Rodriguez in 1993. Funeral services were Wed., Oct. 24 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona; Father R. Dale Magoon will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Robert J. Widerstedt

Robert J. Widerstedt, 53, of Eastport, died Sat., Oct. 20, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 19, 1947, in Detroit, the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Breiter) Widerstedt. He graduated from Cass Tech High School in 1965 and the University of Michigan School of Education in 1970. After graduating, he served in the Peace Corps, drilling wells in India. On March 17, 1982, he married Cheryl Cartner in Bellaire. They made their home in Eastport where he began working in construction. He was a self employed builder for many years. He enjoyed reading, boating and restoring his Ford 8 N tractor. Surviving are his wife Cheryl; daughters Irene Widerstedt of Mt. Pleasant and Molly Widerstedt at home; his parents Alfred and Dorothy Widerstedt of Dearborn; siblings Richard (Terri) Widerstedt of Birmingham, Kathy (Greg) Sherman of Troy, and Ken (Michelle) Widerstedt of Bloomfield Township; niece Jenna and nephews Kyle, Kevin and Eric; uncle Herman and aunt Lorraine Breiter of Vero Beach, Fla. A memorial service was Wed., Oct. 24 at the Collins' residence, 3644 Blasen Shores Dr., just south of White Sands Estates. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alano Club of Charlevoix. Arrangements were made by Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth.

Natalizio DeGiuli

Natalizio DeGiuli, 80, of Bellaire, formerly of Southgate, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Castro Dei Volsci, Italy, the son of Ernesto and Frances (DeSantis) DeGiuli.
A graduate of Detroit Public schools, he served honorably in the United States Army as an interpreter in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked as a millwright for Great Lakes Steel, retiring after 34 years. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Lincoln Park.
"Nat" recently moved from Southgate to live with his cousins in Bellaire.
He is survived by cousins, Richard (Alice) DeGiuli of Bellaire, Julia DeGiuli of Bellaire, Joan Linden of Cadillac, Loretta (Jack) Snyder of Cadillac, and a host of other relatives.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, April 4, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire. Interment will be in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township.

Montague R. Hunt Jr.

Montague R. Hunt Jr., 74, of Bellaire, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 2, 1927, in Chicago, the son of Montague R. and Ella (Rolewich) Hunt Sr. He received his law degree from Wayne State University and earned a degree in business administration from the University of Michigan. Mr. Hunt practiced law in the Detroit metropolitan area and was 43rd District Court Judge for 16 years.
He resided in Ferndale for many years, moving to DeLand, Fla., before becoming a Bellaire resident seven years ago. He was a member of the Ferndale Kiwanis Club and the Traverse City Eagles. He had an avid interest in history and owned a large library of books on the subject. Mr. Hunt loved his dogs.
On Jan. 31, 1981, in Hazel Park, he married Nancy A. (Macken) Folker, who survives. Also surviving are children Valerie Hunt, Jacqueline Hunt, and Thomas (Yvette) Hunt, all of Grand Rapids; stepchildren Karen (Pat) Bourbonnais of Debary, Fla., David (Helen) Folker of Kalkaska, Christopher (Gayle) Folker of Bellaire, Steven (Cheryl) Folker of Mancelona, Becky Folker of Bellaire, and Amy (John) Annoye of Florence, Wis.; brother Gregory Hunt of Indianapolis, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.
No services are planned at this time. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Habitat for Humanity. Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Death Notices

Harry J. Lorentz, 77, of Mancelona, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. Funeral services were April 1, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. Arrangements were handled by Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. of Mancelona.

Mondue B. Thomas, 96, of Bellaire, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Virginia M. Lichnovsky, 88, of Millinani, Hawaii, formerly of Bellaire, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Straub Hospital in Honolulu.
Family will receive friends April 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be conducted April 6 beginning at 11 a.m. at Grace Community Church in Central Lake.

Stanley L. Ball

Stanley Leland Ball, 78, of Fife Lake, Bay City and Standish, passed away March 29, 2002 at his home. A memorial service was held on April 2, at the Spencer Church of Christ with Pastor Mark McCool officiating. Burial was in Springfield Township Clark cemetery in Fife Lake.
Stan was born June 7, 1923 in Spencer, the son of the late Grover and Gladys (Wheeler) Ball. He served his country on Okinawa during World War II. He married Ruby M. Battenfield on April 5, 1946 who survives him. Stan was retired from RWC in Bay City. Upon retirement, Stan and Ruby moved to Fife Lake where he enjoyed woodworking, and many hours working on the Triple F property. He was a member of the Walton Junction Sportsman's Club and the American Legion #0219.
Besides his loving wife of 56 years, surviving are two children, four granddaughters and their spouses, and three great-grandchildren. Kay and her husband, Bob Coggins, of Canton; their daughters, Melissa (Tim) Ellsworth of Northville; and Lori (Jim) Jacob, and their son Christian, of Canton; Richard and his wife Kathryn of Bay City; their daughters, Lisa (Scott) MacGregor and their daughter, Morgan, of Bay City; Jennifer (Tom) Verellen, and their son, Zachary, of Auburn.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider (in lieu of flowers) Munson Hospice and Palliative Care, Traverse City.

Carl H. Boling

Carl Henry Boling, 85, of Kalkaska, died peacefully at home March 28, 2002.
He was born January 5, 1917, in Blount County, Tenn., to Lula Edna Wilson and William Shade Boling. On April 9, 1946, he married Ruth Kuykendall who preceded him in death in 1999.
He is survived by children Dale Goodman of Georgia; Gary Boling of Traverse City; and Carla Carmichael of Mancelona; also beloved grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and four sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son and five brothers.
Carl lived in the Fife Lake-Kalkaska area since 1972. He loved fishing, gardening, and visiting with family and friends. He was a Navy veteran and a proud member of Ironworkers Local #25 since 1947.
The family wishes to thank his caregiver and friend Adrian Schroeder, Munson Hospice, Drs. Ziegler and Jim Milliken, Kalkaska Commission on Aging, local pastors and others whose care and concern meant so much to Carl during this difficult time.
Cremation with burial at Evergreen cemetery are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home. No memorial service is planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Munson Hospice or to the charity of your choice.

Bernard D. Peck

Bernard D. Peck, 51, of Kalkaska, passed away March 25, 2002 at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center after a long battle with a brain tumor. He was born October 4, 1950 in Detroit, the son of Cecil E. and Martha (Hinds) Peck.
Bernard graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1969. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving our country in the Vietnam War. Bernard always enjoyed being around friends and family and liked sports.
Bernard is survived by his loving family, including, parents Cecil and Martha Peck of Kalkaska; son, Adam Hanson of Mancelona; sisters, Sharon (Keith) Ingersoll of Fife Lake and Gloria (Ken) Borgen of Kalkaska; brother, Jerry (Sarah) Peck of Kalkaska; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted March 27 at Garfield Country Church with Reverend Kimberland J. Hough officiating. Interment was at Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska.
Memorials may be made in behalf of Bernard Peck to Garfield Country Church or the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Treva E. Bowerman

Treva E. Bowerman, 65, of Kalkaska, passed away March 26, 2002 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla., surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born November 13, 1936, in Kalkaska, the daughter of Clark and Ardis (Eckhardt) Seeley.
Treva graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1953. She owned and operated Kalkaska Ford Sales from 1973 to 1986. At that time she was the only woman car dealer in Michigan. Treva was a past member of the Kalkaska School Board, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Commission on Aging and North Country Hospice. Treva received numerous awards from North Country Hospice including "Volunteer of the Year."
Treva was a member of Quality Thyme Garden Club and Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Through membership in Quality Thyme Garden Club she planted and cared for flowers and plants at the Chamber of Commerce office, the welcome signs on M-72 and U.S. 131, and the Kalkaska County Courthouse. She was a big supporter of KAIR and the Kaliseum. Treva contributed much time and energy in volunteering for various organizations and projects in Kalkaska County. Treva was also selected as this year's Grand Marshal for the 2002 National Trout Festival. Treva loved friends, family and lived life to the fullest.
Treva is survived by her loving family including her children, Christy (Richard) Cotton of Grand Rapids; Douglas W. (Lisa) Bowerman of Williamsburg; and Lisa (David) Kellman of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her mother Ardis Seeley, of Kalkaska; sisters Dorena (Richard) Raudman and Linda (Kent) Sieting, all of Kalkaska; six grandchildren, Anna, John, Michaela, Dan, Bret and Houston.
Funeral services were held March 30 at Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert W. Stark officiated. Interment was at Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska.
Memorials may be given in behalf of Treva Bowerman to North Country Hospice and the Kaliseum.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
