Renee D. Parks
Renee D. Parks, 92, of Bellaire, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Charlevoix Area Hospital. She was born April 19, 1910, in Tunnbridge Wells, England, the daughter of Henry and Fanny (Jelly) Dane. The family moved to the United States in 1913, settling in the Detroit area.
On Nov. 24, 1937, in Detroit, Renee married Charles A. Parks, who preceded her in death March 30, 1989. Renee moved to Bellaire in 1944 and was employed at Brownwood Acres for more than 20 years as manager of the Honey House Gift Shop. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Bellaire, and also a past member and officer of the Bellaire Business and Professional Women's organization.
Survivors include son Dane (Betty) Parks of Palmer, Alaska; daughter Diane (Rob) Edgington of St. Johns; grandchildren Jack (Tina) Parks of Anchorage, Alaska, and Suzanne (George) Macias of Palmer, Alaska; four stepgrandchildren; two great-granddaughters; eight step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death in addition to her husband, were her parents; and brothers Fred and William Dane.
A memorial service was held Sunday, April 6, at Hope Lutheran Church with Brad Fleet officiating. Memorial contributions in Renee's name may be directed to the Bellaire Public Library, Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility or to Hope Lutheran Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Luella M. Fales

Luella M. Fales, 77, of Ellsworth, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
She was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Earl D. and Viola M. (Gibbs) Brown. She was later adopted and raised by Guy and Mary Watters.
She graduated from Jackson East Intermediate High School and attended Spring Arbor College for more than two years.
On Oct. 19, 1946, she married Clarence Fales at Watters Cabin Camp in South Arm Township. They made their home in Banks Township.
Luella was a homemaker. She worked at Morweld Steel for a year and at Texas Instruments for three years.
She attended Grace Community Church for many years. She served as organist and sang in the choir.
Luella loved flower and vegetable gardening. She also enjoyed playing piano, organ and vocal music.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, dogs and cats (especially Siamese), garage sales, and most of all her family _ children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her husband Clarence; children Sandi Fales of Johannesburg, Richard (Esther) Fales of Ellsworth, Mary Beth (Donald) Everett of Central Lake, Nancy (Mike) McGinley of Central Lake, and James (Alice) Fales of Ellsworth; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and anticipated her first great-great-grandchild to be born in September; sister Margaret Bunn of Lowell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sister Elizabeth Jean Hastings; and brothers Earl Brown, Donald Brown, Paul LeRoy Brown and Bernard Brown.
Funeral services were Monday, April 7, at Grace Community Church in Central Lake, with the Rev. Celia M. Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Ellsworth cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Michigan Hospital Dialysis Unit. The family was served by Hastings Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Doris L. Culver

Doris L. Culver, age 87, of Elk Rapids, passed away Thursday, June 5. 2003 in Grand Rapids. She was born June 24, 1915. For the past three years she had been living at her daughter's home in Grand Rapids.
A long time resident of the Elk Rapids community, she was a member of the Methodist Church of Elk Rapids, and former owner of the White Front Restaurant (Harbor Cafe).
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas "Jake" Culver in 1986. Surviving are her three daughters, Joyce (Gordon) Kroening of Buchanan, Karen Berner of Woodland Park, Colo., and Janet (Gerald) Roberson of Grand Rapids; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family will miss her great sense of humor, strong will and her determination for the zest of life. She will always be loved and in their hearts. Following her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will not be a service. Memorial contributions are suggested to Peter C. and Pat Cook Hospice Center, 3964 Whispering Way, Grand Rapids, MI 49506, or to the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, 301 Traverse St., Elk Rapids, MI 49629.
The Pederson Funeral Home of Rockford handled the arrangements for Doris Culver's family.

Jeanette W. Jobe

Jeanette W. Jobe, 80, of Elk Rapids, and long time resident of Dayton, Ohio passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in Xenia, Ohio.
Born November 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Urban and Margaret Welker and stepfather Joseph Ulliman, Jeanette was a 1940 graduate of Springfield Catholic High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Richard G. Jobe, on Jan 24, 2003, a son Ricky and daughter Nancy Miller Ridenour.
Jeanette is survived by daughter Barbara (Charlie) Lundy of Xenia; son Jim (Kim) Jobe and grandchildren Amanda, Evan, Bryan and Marshall of Round Rock, Texas; sister Rosemary (Chet) Severyn; brothers Richard Ulliman of Columbus and Joe (Virginia) Ulliman of Cincinnati and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 7, 2003 at McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., in Xenia.

Anton Hejnal

Anton (Bolivar) Hejnal, 59, of Fife Lake died on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Mr. Hejnal was born in Lake Township, Missaukee County, on Oct. 10, 1943, to Anton and Alice (Helsel) Hejnal. On Oct. 28, 1961, he married Vivian Ingersoll. He was a member of Morey Church.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian; son, Jerry Hejnal; friend, Julie Tuck of Kalkaska; mother, Alice Hejnal; brother, Dave (Tong) Hejnal; and sister, Patsy (Jr.) Emond, all of Lake City; grandchildren Branna Hejnal, Anton Hejnal, Jennifer Kelley, Jonathan Kelly and Michelle Kelley; and great-grandchildren Chelsie, Chase and Trenton Kelley.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anton Hejnal, in 1992 and sister, Shirley Elliott, in 1980.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 5, at Young Funeral Home in Lake City. The Rev. Paul Lewis officiated. Burial was in Garfield Township cemetery, Garfield Township.

Evelyn Prentice

Evelyn "June" Prentice, 70, of Kalkaska passed away at her home on Friday, June 6, 2003.
She was born on May 8, 1933, in New Buffalo, the daughter of Clarence and Mary (Hemminger) Prentice.
June retired from Dura Automotive in 1995 after 30 years of service. She was a resident of Kalkaska for most of her life.
June is survived by her siblings, Rosetta Durham of New Era, Betty Morse of Kalkaska, Frank (Donna) Fitzgerald of Grand Rapids, Dorothy Love of South Boardman, Robert (Melody) Fitzgerald of Kalkaska, Mary Ellen (Ed) Waltz of Kalkaska, Jean Fitzgerald of Kalkaska, Mike (Nancy) Fitzgerald of Rapid City; and many nieces and nephews.
There was a visitation for family and friends on Sunday, June 8, before her funeral service at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Interment was at St. Mary of the Woods cemetery.
Memorials may be made on behalf of June to Munson Hospice.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Hugh D. Allen

Hugh D. Allen, 87, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday morning, May 1, 2003, in Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo.
Hugh was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Bradley, the youngest child of Edgar S. and Blanche (Bush) Allen. In 1924, the family moved to Mancelona, where Hugh graduated from Mancelona High School in 1933. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan University in 1937 and a master's degree from George Williams College in 1940.
During World War II, Hugh served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific, participating in the North African invasion and Philippines campaign.
Most of Hugh's career was devoted to college administration. He was employed by George Williams College (Chicago, Ill.), Beloit College, Wis., and Aquinas College of Grand Rapids, from which he retired as vice president in 1977. He also directed George Williams College Camp, Lake Geneva, Wis. (1951-57) and served as a YMCA executive in San Francisco, Calf., from 1960 to 1963.
In 1939, Hugh married Virginia Switzer, who predeceased him in 1983. Their children, who survive, are H. David Allen (Gabrielle Gautreaux) of New Orleans, La., and Mary Doud (Robert) of Kalamazoo.
In 1984, Hugh married Helen Rypkema, who survives, along with several nephews and nieces.
Hugh was predeceased by siblings Maud Tanner, Genevieve Were, Kenneth Allen, Avalyn Johnson and Richard Allen.
Since 1999, Hugh has resided in Kalamazoo at Woodside at Friendship Village, where he leaves a circle of dear neighbors and friends. Through development consulting and service endeavors, Hugh contributed to the betterment of numerous educational institutions and cultural and nonprofit organizations in the communities where he lived. He was instrumental in the development of Emeritus College, the lifelong learning center of Aquinas College. His belief in the value of education, appreciation for literature and the arts, and talent for building community wherever he found himself, guided his civic and avocational pursuits.
An avid reader and writer, Hugh contributed a weekly column to his hometown newspaper, The Antrim County News, for several years after he retired. His writings were compiled into two publications, including "The Mancelona Bank Robbery and Other Tales," with sales benefitting the Mancelona Public Schools Foundation.
Hugh's affinity for teaching and penchant for reaching out to others led him to be an influential mentor to young professionals and a devoted friend to many.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorial services were held in Kalamazoo and in Grand Rapids. Memorial contributions should be directed to Aquinas College for the Emeritus College program or to Friendship Village for the Village Woods project. Arrangements were by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Kalamazoo. Online memorialization is available at www.langelands.com.

Ronald Charles Kershner

Ronald Charles Kershner, 39, of Alden, formerly of Muskegon, died early Thursday, June 5, 2003, following a lengthy illness, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born April 15, 1964, in Swickley, Penn., the son of Ronald L. and Bonnie Jo (Cramer) Kershner.
He was a 1982 graduate of HH Dow High School in Midland. Ronald graduated in 1986 with a degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Tech, where he was a member of Sigma Rho Fraternity. He was also affiliated with GMI Engineering and Management Institute, and AMS American Society of Materials.
Ronald was employed for several years as process engineer for Howmet Corp. of Whitehall and in Muskegon as a divisional chemical engineer globally for Perfect Circle Division of the worldwide Dana Corporation.
He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially at Torch Lake, was a Red Wing hockey fan as well as a fan of NASCAR.
Ronald is survived by his parents, Ronald and Bonnie Kershner of Alden; sister Kathy (Jerry) McAuliffe of Beverly Hills, Mich.; brother Steven (Beth) Kershner of Alden; nieces and nephew Ben and Hannah Kershner, and Kyle and Molly McAuliffe; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Torch Lake at a future date. Memorials in the name of Ronald C. Kershner may be directed to Torch Lake Protection Alliance, 7730 SE Torch Lake Drive, Alden, MI 49612 or to Michigan Tech Fund, 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931-1295.
Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Donald E. Flisher

Donald E. Flisher, 86, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Ellsworth, died Friday, June 6, 2003, in Tucson. He was born March 24, 1917, to Steven and Mary (Sherrif) Flisher in Toronto, Canada. He moved to Flint with his sister Kate following his mother's death in 1928.
He became a United States citizen in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in China, Burma and India.
He was employed as a supervisor for General Motors AC Spark Plug for 27 years, retiring in 1975.
He married Mae L. Manker on April 22, 1939. They made their home in Flint, moving to their cabin on Grand Traverse Bay after his retirement in 1975. He has resided in Tucson since 1999.
Mr. Flisher was a gentle, kind and generous man with quick wit and a great sense of humor. He was an avid reader and loved music.
Surviving are his daughter Linda (Gary) Warfield of Tucson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Gary E. (Shawn) Warfield II and their children Cameron Warfield and Angela Warfield of Kearney, Mo., Scott E. (LeAnn) Warfield and their children Jordan Warfield and Dylan Warfield of Goodyear, Ariz.; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Mae, his wife of 54 years, in 1993; and by sisters Catherine "Kate" (Flisher) Small, and Dorothy (Flisher) Wilson; and brother Gordon Flisher.
Funeral service is Thursday, June 12, 2003, 2 p.m., at Ellsworth Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Charles L. Manker officiating. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth on Wednesday, June 11, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Casa de la Luz Hospice, 400 W. Magee Road, Tucson, AZ 85704.
