James A. Gaylord
James A. Gaylord, 82, of Ypsilanti, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at home following an extended illness. He was born May 30, 1921, in Mancelona, the son of James R. and Clara M. (Austin) Gaylord.
He served five years in the United States Air Force during World War II. On May 27, 1950, he married Patricia Coy and she survives.
Mr. Gaylord was an electrician and member of Local 252. He worked in the Ypsilanti area for many years, retiring in 1983. He was also a member of VFW 2408. He loved to hunt and fish.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, survivors include daughter Kathryn Wilson of Mancelona; son Dan (Brenda) Gaylord of Ellington, Fla.; grandchildren Michael, Jason and Amy Gaylord, and Jeremy Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice, 806 Airport Blvd., Ann Arbor, MI 48108, or First United Methodist Church, 209 Washtenaw, Ypsilanti, MI 48197 would be appreciated.
Arrangements were by Stark Funeral Service, Moore Memorial Chapel.

Tonya Marie Cords
Tonya Marie Cords, 32, of Ellsworth, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Tonya was born Aug. 13, 1970, in Flint, the daughter of Charles and Joann (Hetherington) Lacy.
She was a 1989 graduate of Bellaire High School and had attended the Eastport Baptist Church. She worked with her husband in the asphalt sealing business.
Her greatest love was her children and family, which she cherished.
On Oct. 19, 1991, in Central Lake, she married Fred W. Cords, who survives. Also surviving are loving children Michael Scott, Matthew Ryan, Mariah Marie, and Mitchell William; mother Joann Lacy of Central Lake; father Charles Lacy of Bellaire; brother Charles Scott Lacy of Bellaire; nephew Alexander Scott Lacy of Bellaire; aunts Iva (James) Weisler of Atwood, and Mary (Tony) Sanchez of Torch Lake Village; and many cousins.
Funeral services are Wednesday, July 23, 2 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Jerry Troyer will officiate. Interment will be in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tonya Cords Children Memorial Fund, in care of the Alden State Bank.

Timothy A. Vandergriff
Timothy A. Vandergriff, 48, of Mancelona, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Gaylord. He was born Feb. 26, 1955, in Bellaire, the son of James J. and Nancy J. (Jewell) Vandergriff. He was a 1975 graduate of Mancelona High School.
He is survived by his mother Nancy Vandergriff Brown of Mancelona; brother Daniel (Gloria) Vandergriff of Mancelona; and sisters Doris (Marvin) Day of Gaylord, and Sharon (Tom) Williams of Mancelona. Also surviving are stepbrother James Brown of Mancelona; stepsisters Crystal (William) Commander of Deckerville, Penny (Robert) Shank of Malvern, Ore., and Tammie LeDesma of Grayling; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father James in 1984; sister Carolyn K. Vandergriff in 1957; brother James Vandergriff in 2001; and two nieces, Crystal Lee Vandergriff and Doris `D.D.' Day.
Funeral services were July 22 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Gerald Cook officiated. Interment took place in Fairview cemetery, Mancelona.

Joyce Lenore Renn
Joyce Lenore Renn, 67, of Williamsburg, died Friday, July 18, 2003. Joyce was born in Detroit July 9, 1936, the daughter of the late George and Frances T. (Witkowski) Bacon.
On May 26, 1956, she married Richard "Dick" Renn at St. John Bosco Church in Redford Township.
A homemaker, Joyce enjoyed gardening, birds, flowers, laughter, reading and spending time with family. She always aspired to write a book. Joyce will be remembered for her kitchen talents and her pets, Molly and Sam.
Joyce is survived by her husband Dick; daughters Julie (Patrick) Whitley of Charlevoix, Rebecca "Beckie" (Christopher) Wimmer of Charlevoix, and Amy (Richard) Scoff of Mancelona; and grandchildren Jessi, Luke, Jacob, Nicholas, Ryan, Kyle and Kolten.
Rosary was prayed Monday evening at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with her funeral Mass celebrated July 22, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme, with the Rev. Garth L. Hilmer as celebrant. Interment is in Acme Township cemetery.
The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember the American Cancer Society or Christ the King Catholic Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and church.

Fred A. Kent
Fred A. Kent, 73, of Bellaire, died early Tuesday morning, July 15, 2003, at home. He was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Kearney Township, the son of Walter and Maude Eva (Sutton) Kent.
Fred attended Bellaire Public Schools and lived most of his life in Bellaire, except for a few years, moving permanently to Bellaire in 1966. Fred served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.
In Lansing, on Nov. 13, 1953, he married the former Lois E. Mills, who survives.
He and his wife Lois owned and operated Holiday Shores Resort for five years. For many years, Fred was in the building trade as Fred Kent Construction. He enjoyed fishing and mushrooming.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are son Roger (Theresa) Kent of Bellaire; daughters Shelley (John) Fredrickson of Silver Bay, Minn., and Sharon "Shelly" Kent of Granby, Colo.; sister Eva Kurtz of East Jordan; and grandchildren Tim, Shawn and Carrie Fredrickson, and Andy and Katie Kent.
Preceding Fred in death were his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
The funeral service was July 18, at Bellaire Community United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Brown officiating. Following cremation, interment will be in Flewelling cemetery, Kearney Township.
Memorials in Fred's name may be directed to the Antrim County Commission on Aging, P.O. Box 614, Bellaire, MI 49615. Arrangements were made by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Solon `Bud' Barnes, Jr.
Solon "Bud" Barnes, Jr., 67, of East Jordan died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Charlevoix Area Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 21, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan. Pastor James Jordan officiated, with interment in Duns-more cemetery, Echo Township, Antrim County.
Bud was born on Oct. 14, 1935 in Frederick, the son of Solon, Sr. and Stella (Walton) Barnes. On Oct. 7, 1961 in Kalamazoo, he married Linda Richards.
Bud was a self-employed house painter. He enjoyed playing music with his guitar at Grandvue Medical Care Facility and Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. He also ministered at the Antrim County Jail for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Barnes of East Jordan; three children, Loren (Donala) Richards of Bellaire, Solon Buddy (Neila) Barnes III of Central Lake and Jodi Barnes of East Jordan; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Olstrom of East Jordan and Velma McWaters of Everett. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Jacklyn Sue Barnes.
Memorial contributions can be sent to the family.
The family was served by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan.

Doris Elizabeth Gay
Doris Elizabeth Gay, 90, of Williamsburg, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 13, at Munson Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1913, in Williamsburg, she was the daughter of Howard S. and Agnes (Semrow) Brown, a pioneer family from Whitewater Township.
Doris married the love of her life, Earl Lensen Gay on June 26, 1938 in Williamsburg. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Doris was a 1932 graduate of Williamsburg High School and County Normal. She was formerly employed as a secretary for W. Borge Warner Corporation in Muskegon, where she had lived for a number of years.
Doris later returned to the Williamsburg area, where with her husband owned and operated the family business, Browns Grocery Store. She formerly served as treasurer for Whitewater Township, was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and sang in the church choir.
Doris is survived by her niece Susan Kar of Plymouth; nephew, William M. Gay of Allen Park; sister-in-law, Mina Gay of Allen Park; several grand nieces and nephews; many cousins and a very special friend, Rod Kuncaitis.
In addition to her husband, Doris was also preceded in death by her brother-inlaw, William Gay; sister-in-law, Empress Marshall and one nephew, Glen M. Gay.
Funeral services were held at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 19, with the Rev. Doug Pedersen officiating. Burial was at the Williamsburg cemetery. The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church.

Evelyn Black
Evelyn L. Black, 85, of Kalkaska passed away on July 18, 2003, at her home.
She was born on August 31, 1917, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel (VanNess) Leberer.
Evelyn enjoyed arranging and growing flowers, sewing, reading, cooking and traveling throughout the United States and Europe. She was a resident of Kalkaska since moving from Veedersburg, Ind., in 1997. Evelyn was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska and the First Christian Church in Veedersburg.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Barbara A. Bryson of Kalkaska and David L. Mack of Georgetown, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring Evelyn's life is scheduled for July 26 at 3 p.m. at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2470 Beebe Road, Kalkaska, Mich. 49646 or First Christian Church, P.O. Box 176, Veedersburg, Ind. 47987.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Chris Groleau
Chris Duane Groleau, 44, of Kalkaska passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at home from an apparent heart attack.
Chris was born on March 9,1959 in Traverse City on a beautiful winter day, the beloved son of Dorlen and Joanne (LaLone) Groleau. He graduated from Elk Rapids High School in 1977.
Chris was known for his joy of life and offbeat sense of humor. His lifelong wanderlust led him to travel to almost every state in the U.S., sometimes in a car that was barely running or in a boat down the Mississippi River. He loved to stray off the beaten path, visiting some obscure museum or unknown park. But wherever he went, he managed to play a round of golf or a hand of poker.
The greatest joy of Chris's life, though, was his son, Dayton. He was a stay-at-home dad who loved to just spend time with his boy.
Chris is survived by his mother, Joanne Groleau of Kalkaska; his father and stepmother, Dorlen and Betty Ann Groleau of Traverse City; his son, Dayton; his special companion, Christy Lavigne; his brothers, Brent (Pat) Groleau of Rapid City, Ralph (Tina) Groleau of Kalkaska, and Marty Groleau of Kalkaska; his sister, Ann Jeannine (Tony) Trotter of Green Bay, Wis.; seven nieces and nephews; seven grand nieces and nephews; and many other friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 20, at 4 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Friends called on the family from 3 p.m. Sunday until the time of service.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, an educational fund has been established for Dayton Brent Lavigne, c/o Christy Lavigne, 6065 Myers Road, Kalkaska, Mich. 49646.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Marion Thorne
Marion W. Thorne, 90, of Central Lake, and formerly of Kalkaska, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2003, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center _ Long Term Care.
He was born on July 11, 1913, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County, the son of Lowell and Mable (Shaw) Thorne.
Marion married Elsie on December 11, 1936, in Chelsea. He was a resident of Kalkaska County since 1945 until moving to Central Lake in 1998. Marion was a farmer, logger, mechanic and truck driver. Work and family were his life.
Marion is survived by his children, Lowel M. (Gypsie) Thorne of Buffalo, Missouri, and Robert E. (Colleen) Thorne of Central Lake; grandchildren, Mike R. (Colleen) Thorne of Mancelona, Eric Sarten of Central Lake, Corey Thorne of Central Lake, Cheri Otegen of Mancelona, Lori (Robert) Singleton of Texas, Kathy (Mike) Grewe of Traverse City and Missy (Steve) Klaasan of Texas; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Marion was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, in 1987; son, Charles; and sister, Marie Fauser.
The funeral service was held Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska with the Rev. Max Tracey officiating. Interment was in Fife Lake cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
