Eva Mann
Eva Mann, 69, of Bellaire, formerly of Banks Twp., died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at home.
She was born Sept. 7, 1934 in Zerne Banat, Yugoslavia, the daughter of Mathias and Elisabeth (Kamph) Schaefer.
She moved to Antrim County in 1972 from Warren. She owned and operated the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Motel in Atwood along with her family for many years.
On April 2, 1958 in Detroit, she married John Mann who preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother Mathias Schaefer.
Surviving are three sons, John J. (Trudy) Mann of Bellaire, Walter M. (Rhonda) Mann of Bellaire, Thomas P. (Sherry) Mann of Ellsworth; her dearest cousin and best friend John M. Schaefer of Bellaire; and two grandchildren, J.D. and Elisabeth Mann of Bellaire.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 28, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Pastor Bryan Shook officiated. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Torch Lake Twp.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Munson Hospice or the Antrim County Animal Shelter.

Dr. Kenneth E. Turner
Dr. Kenneth E. Turner, 79, of Central Lake, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was born April 13, 1924 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, the son of Elmore and Lily (Lawrence) Turner.
He was a graduate of the University of Detroit and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and interned in Traverse City in 1953. Dr. Turner practiced in Central Lake for 24 years followed by another 24 years of practice in Lusk, Wyo. He was the school sports team physician for both communities for many years. Also, while practicing in Lusk, he served as the Women's Correctional Facility physician and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad physician. He then retired and returned to Central Lake.
As a young man, he entered the Army Air Corp and served with the 12th Air Force, stationed in Italy and Corsica, during World War II. He was a highly decorated First Lieutenant, having flown 74 missions in the European theater as a bombardier navigator. He retained his passion for flying as a private pilot and also held a great love for hunting, fishing, and golfing, enjoying many trips to Beaver Island.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church both in Central Lake and Lusk. He was also a member of the Central Lake Masonic Lodge, the Torch Post VFW #6985 and the Order of the Elks. He served on the Central Lake Public School Board for 11 years.
In 1951, he married Ruth M. (Lantta) who preceded him in death in 1967. Also preceding him in death was a daughter Claudia Reid Hickman in 1993, a brother William L. Turner in 1997, and his parents.
On Feb, 17, 1968 in Central Lake, he married Joyce M. (Wallick) Reid who survives. Also surviving are five daughters: Kathleen (Joe Ross) Turner of Topeka, Kan., Diane (Denny) YoungeDyke of Gaylord, LouAnn (Michael) Bensinger of Midland, Beth (Vern) Bentley of Laramie, Wyo., Laura (Phil) Reid Edwards of Atwood; a son-in-law Alan (Cindy) Hickman of Central Lake; seven grandchildren, Stuart and Emily Hickman, Drew and Kellen YoungeDyke, Megen Bensinger, Elizabeth and Leann Bentley; and a special niece, Janet (Doug) Caporale of Oxford.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 30, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Daniel Clark officiated. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake First Congregational Church or the Central Lake Area Library.

Laurel M. Roote
Laurel M. Roote, 90, of Bellaire, died in the early morning of Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
Born in Detroit on May 31, 1913, she was the daughter of Henry George and Anna Elizabeth (Miller) Gregory. She was a resident of Bellaire for over 25 years, having moved from Union Lake.
In her younger years, Laurel was fond of square-dancing and also enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by her children, Gayle E. (Stella) Roote of Bellaire and Bernadette (Les) Lofgren of Goshen, Ind.; two half-sisters, Ramona (William) Fox of South Lyons and Ellen (Charles "Bud") Matthews of Charlevoix; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Laurel was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Moored.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility, 4543 S. M-88 Hwy., Bellaire, Mich. 49615.
Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Vada (Howell) Watkins
Vada (Howell) Watkins, 88, of Mancelona, died on March 26, 2004, at home, with her children at her side.
Vada was born Oct. 8, 1915 in the beautiful hills of Stanton, Ky., to Lewis Howell and Norda (Billings) Howell. She moved with her family to Mancelona at age 14. In 1932, in Antrim, she married Leslie Watkins and raised 11 loving children. She loved her children dearly, and took great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vada loved birds, collecting bird statues, and flower arranging. Her home was always full of both, but mostly full of love. She could see the best in anyone. Vada never met anyone she didn't like, and everyone that knew her loved her. She was the world's most wonderful mother-in-law. Vada was the sweetest woman on this earth, and is undoubtedly the sweetest woman in heaven.
Vada was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Watkins; and four sons: Dale, Daniel, Venard, and Charles. She was also the last of her brothers and sisters: Pauline, Paul, Woodrow, Bonnie, Kenneth, Lewis, Venard, Nancy, Ada, Ross and Vercil.
She is survived by seven children: Virgina (Don) Miller of Kalkaska, Donald Watkins of Kalkaska, Jerry (Pat) Watkins of Brighton, Vercil (Nancy) Watkins of Redford, Lenard (Marge) Watkins of Mancelona, Sherry (Randy) Windish of Mancelona, Arlyn Haris of Mancelona; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 29, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, the Rev. Louis Scholl officiated. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona.

Delbert C. Folsom
Delbert C. Folsom, 73, of Echo Twp., died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Banner Hospice in Mesa, Ariz.
Delbert was born Sept. 10, 1930 in Echo Twp., the son of James and Sylvia (Bolser) Folsom.
After graduating from the East Jordan High School in 1950, he joined the US Navy and served in the Korean War. He was a member of the East Jordan VFW Post. He retired in 1990 as a rural mail carrier and previously owned and operated Del's Auto in Echo Twp.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and small engine repair.
On Dec. 18, 1955 in Salome, Ariz., he married Shirley White who survives. Also surviving are two children, Lee (Roxanne) Folsom of Echo Twp., Carole (Robert) Genson of Walloon Lake; three grandchildren, Brandon and Adam Folsom and James Genson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Virginia Rebec and Elberta Kent.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 29, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, pastor Gary Elder officiated. Interment will be in Dunsmore cemetery, Echo Twp.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Echo Twp. Park.

Jack C. Chappell
Jack C. Chappell, 87, of Bellaire and formerly of Gaylord, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Mr. Chappell was born Oct. 5, 1916 in Detroit and had spent the majority of his life in the Detroit area. He was a police patrolman with the Detroit Police Department from August 1941 until 1966. He lived in Florida for 14 years and in 1987 moved to Gaylord from St. Joseph. He had been living in Bellaire the past four years. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a fan of all sports, especially Red Wings hockey.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 25, at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. Pastor Steve Scheer officiated. Burial will take place in the spring at Hayes Township cemetery in Gaylord.
Mr. Chappell is survived by his wife, Gladys of Bellaire; two sons, Donald (Trudy) of Bellaire and Gary (Ursula) of Gaylord; four grandchildren, Scott Chappell of Traverse City, Jeff (Lisa) Chappell of North Carolina, Gordon (Kim) Chappell of Traverse City, and Jennifer (Larry) Whitley of North Carolina; and 13 great-grandchildren. His twin brother Donald preceded him in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, Mich., 49734.

Roy H. Swaney
Roy H. Swaney, 67, of Bellaire, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Interment will take place at a later date at Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township. Arrangements were made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Lois Slocum

Mrs. Lois (Mason) Slocum passed away quietly Sunday, May 2, 2004, at 96 years of age in Millerville, Ala., of a short illness.
She wanted to go back to Neebish uninhibited as before and things be back to the way things were a lot of years ago. But time marches on, and this time she chose not to march along with time.
Lois, of Neebish Island, was born April 26, 1908, at Barker Creek, Mich., to Howard Sherman Mason and Alviria (Wygent) Mason. Her parents and family lived many years in Kalkaska.
She graduated Kalkaska High School in 1924 at the age of 16. Following graduation, she worked for an attorney in Kalkaska for a year. She graduated from teacher's college in Kalamazoo in 1926. Her first job as a teacher was in a one-room school house teaching grades K-8 on Sugar Island in Michigan; later teaching on Neebish Island, Mich. She followed this profession until she married in 1937.
On July 26, 1937, in Traverse County, she married Ralph Franklin Slocum. They made their home on Neebish Island, where she has lived over 67 years. She was an avid reader of books (setting a goal of 100 books a year to read), loved all cats, her home on Neebish Island and watching the great ships sail past her home on the St. Mary's River between the Great Lakes. She truly loved living there with her friends.
She was a member of the Neebish Island Pioneer Association.
She was a mentor for her many nieces and nephews over her lifetime, stressing the importance of doing your best in everything that you do.
Education was very important to her. Her motto was, "If it's worth doing, then do it to the best of your ability or it's not worth doing in the first place." She touched many lives during her lifetime by always remembering and caring about her family and friends. You could always count on her to remember a birthday and special occasions by a card. Her home on Neebish was always open for family and friends to visit during the summer months. She was a true inspiration to the younger generation for living her life the way she chose. She will be truly missed by her family and many friends, and will never be forgotten as there will never be another Lois or Aunt Lois.
She is survived by sisters, Zora Pernelia Runion, Montevallo, Ala., and Lorna Alviria Grow of Alexandria, Ky.; brothers, Alva Darrell Mason of Jackson, Mich., and Walter Arlo Mason of Chicago, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Marie Mason of Merrillville, Ind.; a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and now great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Franklin Slocum, in 1961; brothers, Milton Delos Mason, Howard Duane Mason, Royden Crawford Mason and Loyd Horace Mason; sisters, Agatha Rose Haller and Alice lone Chaffin; brothers-in-law, Charles Grow, Leland Runion, Max Haller and James Chaffin, and sisters-inlaw, Charlotte Martina Mason, Mabel Mason, Margery Mason, Olive Mason and Lucille Mason.

Estele Patton
Estele "Pat" Patton passed away on Friday, May 21, 2004 at his home in Kalkaska.
Born on Sept. 17, 1919, in Hillman, he was the son of Henry and Clara Patton.
Pat served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Pontiac Motors. Pat enjoyed fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, playing cards, hunting and working on lawn mowers.
He is survived by his children, Fidalis Lee Patton, Lorraine B. (Steven) Larson and Roger Henry (Cindy) Patton, all of Ludington; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lena Boroff of Kalkaska and Arbutus Woodard of Mancelona.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Clairanda Marie LeClair; sister, Fidalis Lee Owen; and brother, Albert Henry Patton.
The funeral service was conducted on Monday, May 24, at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Kuiper of Evergreen Bible Baptist Church officiating. Interment was at Fairview cemetery in Mancelona.
Memorials may be given in behalf of Pat Patton to: American Cancer Society, 525 W 14th St., Ste. 5, Traverse City, Mich. 49684.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Frederick Martindale
Frederick Lee Martindale, 61, of Kalkaska, passed away suddenly on May 21, 2004 in Indiana.
Born on Dec. 11, 1942 in Grayling, he was the son of Fred and Ella (Smith) Martindale.
Frederick attended Rapid City High School. He married Geraldine Leach on Dec. 21, 1965, in Pontiac. Frederick enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on cars and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving Frederick is his loving family, Jerri, his wife of 38 years; his children, Chris L. (Greg) Medell of Grand Haven, Ray E. (Shawn Baker) Martindale of Rapid City, Laura E. Martindale of Plymouth and Leon H. Martindale of Kalkaska; 15 grandchildren; his sisters, Ella May (Leo) Barber of Alden, Opal (Don) Chilson of Williamsburg and Delores Miller of Kalkaska, and his sister-in-laws, Shirley Weiss and Betty Martindale.
Frederick was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Bill Stephenson and Jerry Martindale.
The funeral service was held May 28 at the Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Pastor Robert C. Saxton officiating from Spencer Church of Christ.
Interment was at Evergreen cemetery.
Memorials may be given in behalf of Frederick to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
