Crystal Beck-White
Crystal Lynn Beck-White, 36, of Kalkaska, and formerly of Tuscola, Ill., passed away on Oct. 8, 2004, with her family by her side at Hospice House in Traverse City after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born on Jan. 25, 1968, in Monticello, Ill., the daughter of James D. Raney and Paula D. Ragel.
Crystal married Troy White in Kalkaska and he preceded her in death. She was a caring wife, mother, daughter and sister. She enjoyed life and all of her friends.
Surviving Crystal is her son, William Earl Noble Jr. of Kalkaska; daughter, Jami Renee (Randy) Beck-Lee of Vero Beach, Fla.; grandson, Malik Jordan Lee of Vero Beach, Fla.; mother, Paula D. (Joseph) Ferrell of South Boardman; father, James Raney of Mahomet, Ill.; siblings, Vicki Lorraine (Richard) Irelan of Mio, Katrina Annette (Joshua) Smith of Kalkaska and Aaron Christopher Dyer of Pope AFB, N. C. and Jennifer Raney and Stephanie Raney, both of Mahomet, Ill.; nieces, Danielle and Kelley Irelan, and nephews, Jacob Irelan and Joshua Smith.
Crystal was preceded in death by her husband, Troy; her maternal and paternal grandparents, and her brothers, James Dale Raney Jr. and Richard Alexander Dyer.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Paul Karges will be officiating. A second memorial service, with visitation one hour prior, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church in Tuscola, Ill., for Crystal and Troy White. Inurnment will be at Sunny Slope cemetery in Saunemin, Ill., immediately after service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House, 450 Brooks Street, Traverse City, Mich. 49684 or Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, 230 W. Monroe, Ste. 2528, Chicago, Ill. 60606.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home of Kalkaska.

Newton Miller
Newton J. Miller, 83, of South Boardman passed away on Oct. 7, 2004, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center in Kalkaska. He was born on April 19, 1921, in Garfield Township, the son of Bert and Marguerite (Anker) Miller.
Newton was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He married Lucille A. Hall on June 9, 1944, in South Boardman. Newton worked for the DNR and retired after 30 years of service. He loved music and could play 17 instruments, his favorites being the steel guitar, fiddle, guitar and mandolin. He played for many dances over the years and recently would play at the Kalkaska Senior Citizen Center. Newton enjoyed tinkering with cars, his pair of ponies and driving around in the country.
Surviving Newton is his wife, Lucille; sisters, Lorene Sieffert of Kalkaska and Joan (Ralph) Clous of Kingsley; brother-in-law, John Spencer; sister-in-law, Lucille Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
Newton was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne, and sisters, Nita, Maisy, Myrna, Edna and Elna Yvonne.
The funeral service was held on Oct. 9 at Wolfe Funeral Home. The Rev. Kimberland Hough of Garfield Country Church officiated. Military honors were provided by Kalkaska VFW Post 8684. Interment was at Garfield Township cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in behalf of Newton to the Kalkaska County Commission on Aging, 303 S. Coral St., Kalkaska, Mich. 49646.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home of Kalkaska.

Nancy Lee Ikens Olson
Nancy Lee Ikens Olson, 70, fought the good fight and moved on to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 at her home in South Arm Township.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Harvest Barn Word of Life Church in East Jordan. Evangelist Billie Morgan and Elder Lacey Stephan of the Community of Christ Church officiated with interment following at Sunset Hill cemetery in East Jordan.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1934 in Petoskey, the daughter of Harold and Lucille (Belding) Ikens. Nancy was raised by her mother and stepfather, Orlin Cunningham. She graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1952. On July 27, 1952 in Charlevoix, she married Gerald "Jerry" Olson. Nancy had worked as an insurance agent for Korthase Insurance Company in East Jordan for 29 years and retired in 1998.
When her children were young, she was very active in the Boys Scout and Girls Scout programs in East Jordan for many years. She was also a member of the East Jordan Lioness Club and was active in the Lioness Club district organization.
Nancy was named East Jordan "Mother of the Year" in 2003. She was also a longstanding member and Elder of the Community of Christ Church in East Jordan.
Nancy was a very giving person who took full advantage of her time on this earth to love and minister to everyone she could.
She leaves behind her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Olson; four children, Nancy (Dennis) DeNise of Boyne City, Allan (Vicki) Olson of East Jordan, Cynthia (Neil) Bennett of East Jordan and Terrence (Laura) Olson of Murray, Kentucky; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Robert) Mathers of Boyne City and Sandra (Ronald) Sniegowski of Ludington; two brothers, David (Mary Lou) Ikens of Roger City and Richard (Illeen) Ikens; and her stepmother, Marjorie Ikens of Vanderbilt.
She is preceded in death by her father, Harold Ikens; mother, Lucille Cunningham; stepfather, Orlin Cunningham; and three brothers, Ron Cunningham, Orlin "Butch" Cunningham and Curtis Ikens.
Memorials may be given to the Community of Christ Church in East Jordan.
Arrangements were made by Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan.

Charlotte J. Follette
Charlotte J. Follette (Howes), 58, of Racine, Wis., formally of Mancelona, passed away peacefully with her family and friends at her side on Sept. 25, 2004, after a long illness.
Charlotte was born in St. Ignace on Aug. 28, 1946 to Minnie Madeline "Madge" Howes and the late James O. Howes.
Survivors include her loving husband, Albert; sisters Shirley (Robert) Davenport, Debbie Tubbs, Donna (Alfred) Oney; brothers Emory Howes, Robert Howes, and James Orville Howes, Jr.; and brother-in-law Leonard Gamble. Charlotte is further survived by two children, four step-children, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her father, two sisters, Mary Howes and Margaret Gamble, and a brother, Alvin Howes.

Jay T. Stewart
Jay T. Stewart, 74, of Mancelona died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Jay was born April 28, 1930, in Sparta, Tenn., the son of John D. and Lela May (Brady) Stewart.
He had resided in Mancelona Township for the past nine years, moving from Troy. A carpenter all his life, he was a member of the Detroit Carpenter's Union Local No. 687.
His first love was his family and his passions were building, hunting, snowmobiling and the outdoors.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.
On April 10, 1948, in Royal Oak Township, he married Betty J. Postlewait who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Donna L. (Donald) Frost of Mancelona, Jaydine L. Taylor of Mancelona, Tawnya M. (Scott) Hemstrom of Emmett; a brother Stevie Stewart of Hazel Park; three sisters, Louise McKenzie of California, Deltrous Reece of Troy, Glenda (Carl) Summers of Royal Oak; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jimmy and Tommy, and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Yousef Jabara officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency Hospice, 220 Garfield Ave., Charlevoix, MI., 49720.

Beatrice Strickland
Beatrice Strickland, 97, of Alba died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Beatrice was born Nov. 29, 1906 in Elmira, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Brooks) Rusnell.
She moved to Alba in 1915, Flint in 1926 and back to Alba in 1957. She was a 1915 graduate of Alba High School.
She was a J.C. Penny Store manager for many years working in Flint and Florida. Beatrice was a member of the Alba United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting and crocheting.
On June 15, 1926, in Pellston, she married Hugh Strickland who died in 1975. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Lyle, Erford and Raleigh Rusnell, and one sister, Zella Steward.
Surviving are a son William (Patricia) Strickland of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Maxine Rusnell of Alba; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Kathy Steen officiated. Interment was in the Star Township cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.

Ina T. Gould
Ina T. Gould, 100, of Alden, formerly of Evart, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Funeral services will be held in Evart. Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Jack Doherty
Jack Junior Doherty went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at the Kalkaska Memorial Medical Care Center. He was 77 years old.
Jack was born in Pioneer Township, Missaukee County, on July 13, 1927, the son of John J. and Alice M. (Helsel) Doherty. He was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, and after graduation from Sault High School in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Airborne, serving as a paratrooper while stationed in Japan.
Jack attended the University of Illinois and Colorado University. He worked as a police officer in Mt. Clemens, and for Petitpren Distributors before coming to Kalkaska in 1964, where he owned and operated Jacks Sport Shop for more than 20 years.
On Aug. 11, 1953, he married Dorothy E. Kuechenmeister who survives him along with two sons, Steven (Deborah) Doherty of Mancelona and Daniel (Carole) Doherty of Kalkaska; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a loving cousin June (Tom) Prentice of Howell; a brother, the Rev. R. Paul (Joan) Doherty of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kalkaska Lions Club and a life member of the Kalkaska VFW Post No. 8684. He was an avid sports fan, especially football, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a devoted and beloved husband, a wonderful dad and grandfather, and a brother to be proud of.
Funeral services were planned for Wednesday, Nov. 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ted Turanski officiating.
Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Kalkaska Memorial Health Center-Long Term Care.

Doyle Campbell
Doyle C. Campbell of Fife Lake died on Tuesday, Nov.16, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was the son of Darrell and Anna Campbell.
At the age of 16, he left home and joined the Merchant Marines. After World War II he came home and sailed the Great Lakes.
Doyle went to work for Great Lakes Steel Inc. in Ecorse. He retired from B.A.S.F. after 29 years in Wyandotte.
He married Barbara Murray on Oct. 19, 1982, in Lincoln Park. They were residents of Fife Lake for 21 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Kalkaska.
Doyle is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; children, Marlene Ashman of Seattle, Wash., Anna Foley of Wyandotte, Doyle Leffew of South Boardman; stepchildren, Patsy Newmann of Kalkaska, Danny Leffew of Trenton, David Leffew of Taylor, Mary White of Flat Rock, and Sheila Leffew of Flat Rock; 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Carlson; brother, Russell Campbell; and seven nieces and nephews.
Doyle was preceded in death by his son, Darrell Campbell; and stepson, Bobby Leffew.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The Rev. Kimberland Hough officiated. Interment was at Lodi cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Larry Strouse
Larry Dean Strouse, 63, of South Boardman passed away on Thursday, Nov.18, 2004, with his family by his side at home.
Larry was born on May 5, 1941, in Clare County, the son of Willis and Mildred (Langworthy) Strouse. He married Jean A. Bieberbach on Aug. 18, 1983, in Fife Lake.
Larry enjoyed farming the old-fashioned way with mules. He loved working outdoors, farming and using heavy equipment. He also enjoyed making maple syrup.
Larry was a member of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Larry loved his family immensely.
Surviving Larry is his beloved Jean, his wife of 21 years; children, Brian Strouse of Colorado, Tammy Strouse of Colemen, Jerremy Strouse of Battle Creek, Kathleen (George) Chamberlain of Coleman, Angie (Bruce) Calleberg of British Columbia, Canada, Allyn (Bethany) Strouse, Casey Strouse, Patrick Strouse and Kyleigh Strouse, all of South Boardman; four grandchildren; mother, Mildred Strouse of Salem, Mo.; brothers and sisters, Harold (Marilynn) Strouse of Grayling, Helen (Carl) Davis of Dewitt, Mo., Carol (Connie) Strouse of Clare, Margaret (Orval) Hubel of Lake George, Kathleen (Jerry) Shepherd) of Linn, Mo., and Phyllis (Jim) Crocker and Mike Strouse, all of Salem, Mo.
Preceeding Larry in death was his father, Willis Strouse; son, Darrin Strouse; and sister, Joanne Strouse.
The memorial service was held on Monday, Nov. 22, at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Stark officiating. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
