Alice J. Schoof
Alice J. Schoof, 74, of Charlevoix, died on March 23, 2006 at Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix.
She was born on March 13, 1932 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Alfred and Cordelia (Herrmann) Thomas.
She resided in Whitewater, WI for many years before retiring and moving to Charlevoix in 1966.
She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Psychology from Iowa State University and then went on to teach at SUNY in Plattsburgh, New York and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for 25 years.
She enjoyed reading, politics, keeping up on current news events and had a special love for traveling.
On June 14, 1958 in Villa Park, IL she married Jack Schoof who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Mark) Kwasny of Columbus, OH, Martha (Stanley) Kupka of Charlevoix, three grandchildren, Katie and Michael Kwasny, and Samantha Kupka.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Rev. Nancy Rohde will officiate. Interment will take place in Lakeview cemetery in Bellaire at a later date.

Clifton Dale Watros
Clifton Dale Watros, 65, of Stanwood, passed away on Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids. A memorial luncheon took place on Sunday, March 5, at the Mecosta Township Hall in Rogers Heights.

Loyal Cooper
Loyal "Bud" Cooper passed away on March 17, 2006, at his home in Kalkaska, surrounded by his devoted family.
Loyal was a caring, loving friend to all. Born on June 29, 1920, in Cadillac, he was the son of the late Leo and Abbie (Letts) Cooper.
Bud was a veteran and served our country two years in Germany during World War II in the U.S. Army.
He married Maurine Nelson on March 3, 1940, and they were together for 36 years before her passing on Oct. 17, 1976. On June 16, 1979, Bud married Patricia Plosczynski.
Bud served many years at the Spencer Church of Christ as an elder and deacon. He was a member of the Bear Lake Christian Church of Christ, and enjoyed being a greeter and helping at the church's pancake breakfast.
Bud always had a helping hand and a big smile and hug for everyone. He loved the Lord and showed it in so many ways.
His greatest love was every year having a huge garden and sharing the produce with others. He was an avid fisherman, loved hunting, playing cards, reading western's and war novels.
Bud worked at the Kalkaska County Road Commission for 25 years and retired at the age of 62. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Grange Association.
He left behind his wife, Patricia, of 26 years; beloved son, Richard Cooper of Kalkaska and Susan Cooper of Mt. Morris; step-children, Larry Przybylski of Phoenix, Ariz., David (Lisa) Przybylski and Julie Przybylski, both of Eagle, Wisc.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Bud in death was his first wife, Maurine; sister, Ellen; and brother, Lloyde "Buck."
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place April 22 at noon at the Bear Lake Christian Church, M-72 and East Bear Lake Road.
Our grateful appreciation to our dear neighbors and friends who have stood by us, our church family, and Dr. Trudell of the Gaylord Veterans Affairs Clinic.

Max Hamacher
Max "Lefty" Hamacher, 79, of Holland passed away at his home on March 20, 2006.
Max was born on Feb. 15, 1927, in Kalkaska. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1983 as a cutter grind from General Motor Corp. in Wyoming. He attended Alturas United Methodist Church. He loved sports.
In his younger days, Max played basketball, baseball, bowling and golf, as well as being a hunting and fishing enthusiast. In his latter yars, he became his grand-children's No. 1 fan, as they played and coached sports.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Hamacher, of Lake Wales, Fla.; daughters, Cathy (Daniel) Crane of Moran, and Kim (Patrick) Harring of Holland; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim) Zuiderveen, Brian Crane and fiance Stacey Havermahl, Brett (Megan) Harring and Kendra Harring; and great-grandchildren Alyssa and Mieke Zuiderveen.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, at the Calvary Reformed Church in Holland.

Harold Snyder
Harold M. Snyder, 68, of Kalkaska passed away on March 24, 2006, surrounded by his family.
Born on Aug. 20, 1937 in Fife Lake, he was the son of Stanley A. and Maxine L. (Lanning) Snyder.
Harold lived and worked in the Fife Lake area for more than 40 years. He was a carpenter and built many residential and commercial buildings. Harold also operated adult foster care homes in the Fife Lake area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, looking for mushrooms, working with wood for crafts or just splitting it for heat.
Harold took great pride in his work. He loved his family and spending time with them. His grandchildren were his "best pals" and that was important to him.
Surviving Harold are his children, David W. (Debra) Snyder, Lorie A. (Steve) Stacy, both of Fife Lake, and Fern M. Snyder of Kalkaska; his mother, Maxine L. Williams of Kalkaska; grandchildren, Jennifer (Randy) Hoy, Russell Stacy, Stephen Stacy, Brandon M. Crowley, David T. Crowley and Courtney L. Crowley; great-grandchildren, Jason Stacy and Abigail Stacy; brother, Stanley (Ruth Ann) Snyder of Kalkaska; and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his father, Stanley A. Snyder.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 28, at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home. Elder Linda J. Bridson of the Community of Christ Church officiated. Burial was at Clark cemetery.
Memorials may be given on behalf of Harold to the American Lung Association, 153 1/2 E. Front St., Traverse City, Mich. 49684.

June Ford
June S. Ford, 63 of Berea, Ohio, and formerly of Kalkaska, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2006, at the Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.
June was the beloved mother of Robert A. Ford Jr. of Traverse City, Charles (Gayla) Arthur of Ft. Worth, Texas, Timothy (Sharra) Ford of Fife Lake, David (Raquel) Ford of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard (Melissa) Ford of Kalkaska and Susan (Carol Livesay) Ford of Traverse City; loved grandmother of 17 grandchildren; loved sister of Marie Udell of Avon Lake, Ohio, Helen Matlack of Berea, Ohio, and Ruth Adams of Olmsted Township, Ohio; and loved aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Born on September 7, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, June was the daughter of the late William and Lucinda (Johnson) Arthur.
June married Robert A. Ford on June 22, 1971, in Cleveland. She was a resident of Berea, Ohio, since 1990 moving from Kalkaska.
June enjoyed being a homemaker and loved spending time with family and friends. She was nicknamed "Junie" by her beloved sisters. June loved the Kalkaska area and was just brought home 10 days ago.
Preceding June in death was her husband, Robert; her parents; and brothers, Guy Arthur, Charles Arthur and John Arthur.
Visitation and funeral services were held at the Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home, with Jeff Badgero of the Kalkaska Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery.
Memorials may be given in memory of June to Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth Ave., Traverse City, Mich. 49684.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home.

Violet Williams
Violet G. Williams, 74, of Kalkaska passed away peacefully on March 26, 2006, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center's Long Term Care unit.
She was born on July 3, 1932, in Alma, the daughter of the late Hiram and Helen (Farr) DeCamp.
The beloved mother of James (Grace) Tester of Kalkaska, Helen Tester of Kalkaska, George (Sherry) Tester of Oklahoma, Bonnie (Ralph) Hanover of Owosso, Karen (Charles) Forbush of Kalkaska, Chance (Marie) Arbuckle of Traverse City, Penny (Mark) Fairbotham of Johannesburg, Randy Arbuckle of Jackson and Kay (Butch) Tuck of Republic; loved grandmother of 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and loved sister of Joan Whitney.
Violet was a resident of Kalkaska since 1968. She was a member of the Helping Hands Club in Kalkaska. She enjoyed playing bingo and loved her family immensely.
Preceding Violet in death was her husband, Warren Ogg; and husband, Joseph Williams; infant daughter, Dixie Lynn Arbuckle; grandchildren, Travis Tuck and Kendall Crandell; brother, Chester DeCamp; and sister-in-law, Joyce DeCamp.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Friday at noon at the funeral home, with additional visitation one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at Oliver Township cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home.

Edith Carroll Canter
Death overtook Mrs. Edith M. Carroll Canter, of Seattle, Wash., on March 16, 2006.
Mrs. Canter age 85 years, 4 months and 13 days, was born on October 31, 1920, on a farm near Milford. Edith was the eldest of ten children of Noble and Mabel Carroll of Kalkaska.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and her beloved brother Charles F. Carroll of Portland, and three of her seven children who were Patricia L. King of Seattle, Craig J. Olson of Clarkston, and Mark E. Olson, of Tacoma, Wash.
She is survived by son, Paul Eric Olson, and daughters Linnea Carroll Meyer of Seattle, Mrs. Elise Hodgkin, and Mrs. Lianna Spring; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Canter was rearing her great-grandson, Cody L. Dockery, age 11, when she passed away.
Mrs. Canter is also survived by her brothers, Franklin T. (Frank) Carroll of Three Rivers, Noble L. (Bob) Carroll of Barryton, Acil B. Carroll of Rockford, Lawrence A. (Larry) Carroll of Pentwater, John D. Carroll of Villa Grove, Colo.; and sisters, Mrs. Clara A. (Connie) Smith of Grayling, Mrs. Mabel J. (Joann) Beeman of Traverse City, and Mrs. Betty G. Bicknell of Bettendorf, Iowa.
Edith grew up in Kalkaska, and was valedictorian of her graduating high school class. Later, she attended both Michigan State College and Wayne State University in Detroit.
During the 1960-70s, Edith was the proprietress of The Unstabled Theater, an avant-garde playhouse, coffeehouse and progressive jazz venue. It was, as Lily Tomlin, one of her early performers has said, "A happening place." Later, Edith became executive director of the Shiawassee County, Michigan YMCA, and after moving to Seattle in 1980, she became involved in the Seattle Arts Program.
More recently, she gave much of her vitality and love of the arts to organizing and teaching activities at the St. Vincent de Paul retirement center in West Seattle.
Edith Carroll Canter was a proud member of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, being a direct descendant of Lt. Stephan Noble, who answered the alarm at Lexington in 1775, and of Elizabeth Tilley and John Howland, who came on the Mayflower in 1620, and she was a second cousin to Abraham Lincoln.
Her life remains an inspiration to all her family and friends who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed. At her own request, her ashes will be scattered over San Francisco Bay.
In remembrance and in lieu of flowers, a donation program has been set up in her name at the Northwest Kidney Centers. Donations in Edith Carroll Canter's name should be sent to NW Kidney Centers, P.O. Box 3035, Seattle, Wash. 98114.

Bruce D. Morrison
Bruce D. Morrison passed away on Dec. 9, 2005, in McAllen, Texas.
A celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. The Rev. William Chu will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in Yuba cemetery.
Memorials may be given in Bruce's name to the Humane Society.
Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Donald Ritt
Donald Lee Ritt, 69, of Bellaire, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Florida.
He was born in Kearney Township, Bellaire, Michigan on May 17, 1936, the son of Emil O. and Lyla I. (Derenzy) Ritt. He resided in Bellaire most of his life and graduated from Bellaire Public High School in 1954. He graduated from Michigan Technological University with a degree in chemical engineering. He then attended Ferris State University where he obtained his teaching certificate.
Don was employed by the Bellaire Public Schools where he was a teacher for 30 years. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, building and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Carol A. Ritt and four daughters, Cindy (Randy) Lee, Canda (Eric) Vietzke, Carrie (Tony) Pastoria and Corry (Matt) Olszewski. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Miranda and Mirissa Lee, Holly and Zachary Vietzke, Samantha, Christina and Michael Pastoria, and Dean and unborn granddaughter Olszewski; and his brother Danny A. (Maudie) Ritt and his sister Gayle A. Hansen. Also part of his family were six stepchildren, Debra A. (Denny) Malone, George J. (Carol) Laufersky, Jr., Lori M. (Sonny) Resmondo, Connie S. (Brian) Laufersky, Greg J. (Amanda) Laufersky, Danny J. (Debbie) Laufersky and many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be a memorial gathering on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at the home of Don and Carol Ritt, 3007 Akins Lane, Bellaire.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellaire Conservation Club/Kids Fish Day.
