Dustin Hartzell
Dustin W. "Dusty" Hartzell, 22, died suddenly on Saturday, April 15, 2006, in Kalkaska as a result of an automobile accident.
Born on May 14, 1983 in Traverse City, he is the son of Steven and Allison (Swikoski) Hartzell.
Dusty graduated from Kalkaska High School in 2001. He was employed at Wayne Wire Airbag Components and attended college at Northwest Michigan College in Traverse. Dusty enjoyed music, literature, playing his guitar, and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving Dusty are his parents, Steven and Allison; grandparents, Nona (Kevin) Wells and Wayne and Genny Hartzell, all of Kalkaska; great-grandmother, Juanita Bard of Gladwin; and sister, Lacee J. Hartzell of Kalkaska.
Visitation with Dusty's family was set for Monday, April 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The funeral service was scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Matt Moser officiating. Burial will be at Lodi cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Ezra Parsons
Ezra D. Parsons, 78, of Kalkaska passed away on April 10, 2006, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center's Long Term Care Unit.
Born on Sept. 29, 1927, in Ionia, he was the son of the late Newton and Elsie (Lovelace) Parsons.
Ezra was the beloved father of James Alan Parsons of Buckley, Bradley Scott (Ellia) Parsons of Tacoma, Wash., John Leroy Parsons of Livonia, Richard Ray (Deborah) Parsons of Traverse City, Elsie Jean (Sidney Dean) Phillips of Buckley, Michael Dean Parsons of Buckley, Thomas Orum (Lynette) Parsons of Traverse City and Naomi Ann (Matt) Wightman of Hesperia; loved brother of Robert (Norma) Parsons of Grand Ledge; and the mother of his children, Marilyn Durga, of Kalkaska.
Ezra served in the U.S. Army. He worked in the logging industry and just enjoyed being outside. Ezra was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a resident of Kalkaska since 1954.
A memorial service was held Thursday, April 13, at the Kalkaska VFW Post No. 8684 where Amos Graves, post chaplin, officiated.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Emmett Price
Emmett "Gene" Price, 76, of Fife Lake died on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center's Specialty Unit in the arms of his best friend and companion, Judy Houts.
He was born on January 19, 1930, in Rudyard to Sidney and Phoebe (Baril) Price and grew up in the Upper Peninsula. He moved to Detroit as a young man and served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War. After his military service, he lived in Roseville and worked as a tool maker for LaSalle Machine Tool, retiring to the Fife Lake area 24 years ago.
Mr. Price enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushrooming, blueberry picking, bowling and trips to the casino. But, most of all, he enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was a member of the Fife Lake American Legion Post No. 219.
He is survived by his companion, Judy Houts, daughter, Kathy (John) Locher, grandchildren, Johanna (Charles) Marshall and John Locher Jr., great-granddaughters; Sabrina and Savanna Marshall, all of Arizona. He is also survived by step-children, Christine and Keith Frick and sons; Paul, Matthew and Kevin of Missouri, Kim and Michael Murray and daughters, Samantha Troino and Julia Murray of Galesburg, Mich.; Gregory Vargason and Tina of Galesburg, Michelle and Andrew Gamble and daughters Ashley and Brianna Larr, Erica and Mariah Gamble, and Morgan Emery of Manton and Reed City. Also surviving are sisters, Virginia Webb of Florida and Doris Gwisdala of Mancelona; brother-in-law, Donald Clark; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Dunathan; and two brothers-in-law.
A memorial service will be held at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m., with Mr. Keith Frick officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fife Lake American Legion Post. Friends may visit with the family from noon until the time of the service.
Memorial gifts may be made to the new Fife Lake Public Library landscaping and furnishing fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Specialty Unit at KMHC for the tender, loving care they gave to Gene. You all have your place in heaven.

Ruby Jeane Berg
Ruby Jeane Berg, age 76, of Milton Township died Thursday, April 13, 2006.
Ruby was born July 2, 1929, in Traverse City. On August 9, 1952, she married Stanley T. Berg who preceded her in death.
Also preceding Ruby in death was her brother Arnold Stites.
She is survived by her daughter Faith (James) Lessner of Texas; son Ted Berg of Rapid City; sister Joyce (Glen) Jacob; brothers Harold (Dorothy) Stites and Gale (Judy) Stites; granddaughter Kara (Geoff) Cardoza and many nieces and nephews.
Ruby loved the great outdoors especially ice fishing and gardening, and she was a true animal lover. She also enjoyed crocheting and reading a great deal.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Those desiring may make contributions to the Elk Rapids Public Library, 300 Noble, Elk Rapids, MI 49629 in memory of Ruby.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home.

Joanne Crandall
Joanne Helen Crandall 66, went to be with her Lord, Sunday, February 26, 2006, after battling a very rare blood disease called Amyloidosis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Helen Lockman. Joanne will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Bob Crandall. Her funeral services were held March 1st, their 47th anniversary. She also will be remembered by her children, Barbara (John) Myers of S.C., Bob Jr. (Robin) Crandall, Brenda (Jim) Greenman; her five special grandchildren, Kyle Myers, Justin and Meghan Crandall, Holli and Brett Greenman; her brother and special sister-in-law, Ronald (Gerri) Lockman; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Services were provided by Cook Funeral Home, in Byron Center, 2067 84th St. S.W. Joyce Keillor
Joyce Y. Keillor, 80, of Bellaire, died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Munson Medical Center.
The daughter of Roy C. and Hazel (Monroe) Davis, she was born July 2, 1925 in Buckley. On Nov. 5, 1948, in Flint, she married William J. Keillor who died Jan. 31, 1996.
Joyce worked in the accounting department of the Flint General Motors plant for 31 years. She and her husband moved from Flint to their home on Torch Lake in 1974.
She was an avid walker, and could often be seen walking on S. East Torch Lake Drive. Joyce was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Millard "Cal" Davis of Durand and Quentin Davis of Aberdeen, MD; a sister, Mildred Schworm of Traverse City; three half-sisters, Mabel Zak of Kalkaska, LolaBelle Bowman of Interlochen and Aurelia (Mel) Koenig of Louden, Tenn.; a stepson, William F. (Sharon) Keillor of Flushing; and a step-grandson, Chris Keillor.
She was preceded in death along with her husband by her parents and a sister, Vivian Carlson.
There will be no visitation, and a private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Alden United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 130, Alden, 49612 or to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Marion McCarty
Marion McCarty 80, of Traverse City, formerly of Mancelona and Bellaire, died on April 19, 2006, at Munson Medical Center after a long illness.
She was born on Sept. 6, 1925, in Mancelona, the daughter of William Bowman and Clara Webb.
On February 11, 1943, she married Leathel McCarty in Mancelona.
She lived in Escanaba, MI., in her early years then returned to Mancelona. In 1969 she moved to the beautiful shores of Clam Lake, then Traverse City in 2001.
She was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Raymond Wilcox Post # 133.
She worked at Mt. Clemens (Dura) for years. She retired from Sara Lee Bakery in Traverse City in 1992.
Marion is survived by five children, Larry McCarty of Mancelona, Melba (James) Crothers of Alden, Joanne (Mike) Thompson of Ionia, Leathel (Lee) Jackie McCarty of Mancelona and Nona (John) McCarty-Palulis of Kalkaska, 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, three sisters, Joyce Little of Cadillac, Pat Lucas of Traverse City and Vivian Johnson of Alabama, many nieces and nephews, two brother-in laws Thurman (Joyce) McCarty of Mancelona, Clayton (Andy) McCarty of Kalkaska, and one sister-in- law Arbutus McCarty of Kalkaska. .
She was preceded in death by her husband Leathel in 2000, her parents, two brothers, three sisters and a grandson.
Marion loved her family very much. She liked to fish, camping, sewing, painting and Bingo.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Pathway Community Church in Mancelona. Rev. Sam McClellan officiated. Interment was in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona.
Visitation will took place on at the Mancelona chapel of Mortensen funeral Homes.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Elwyn Burnett
Elwyn M. Burnett, 90, of Central Lake, died quietly in his sleep March 14, 2006, at the Eastport Village Care Home.
Elwyn was born August 10, 1915, in Mancelona, the son of Guy and Lilly (Ballard) Burnett. Raised in Mancelona he attended school there.
His long employment record in this order included farming, truck driving, Maudsly's Service Station, Central Lake Lumber Yard, James Hardware, New Home Coach, Pontiac Motors, Morgan Drive Away, Oldsmobile Auto Transport, Schult Mobile Home, Patiorama (a business of his own in Jensen Beach, FL.), the Jenson Beach Bait Shop, and the Jensen Beach Taxi Service.
He was the Central Lake fire chief for many years, King Lion of the Jensen Beach, Fl. Lions Club, member of the Central Lake Lions Club, member of the Central Lake Odd Fellows, and lifetime member of the Central Lake First Congregational Church.
He enjoyed ice fishing, snook fishing and deer hunting.
On Sept. 22, 1933, in Central Lake, he married Gladys Thelma James, his wife of 64 years, who preceded him in death.
Also preceding him in death were a daughter Mary Margaret Gasca, a brother Paul Burnett, his father and mother and a stepfather, Louis Strauss.
Surviving are two sons, Al (Betty) Burnett of Central Lake, Jim (Liz) Burnett of Kearns, Utah, a niece, Paula Burnett of Kalkaska, five grandchildren, Rod and Bob Burnett of Brunswick, GA, Greg Burnett of L'Anse, Jimmy Burnett of Provo, Utah, and Michelle Gasca of Chicago, many great and great-great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Rev. Daniel Clark officiating. Interment will be in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Twp.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake First Congregational Church or the Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency Hospice.

Adelaide Hughes
Adelaide K. Hughes (Borcherding) 95, Centerville, OH., died April 15, 2006, at the Hospice of Dayton. She was born Jan. 26, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to John and Clara (Schaaf) Borcherding.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard Clark Hughes; siblings Clifford, Luella Ries, Alfred, Ann Louise, Walter, Earl and Ralph Borcherding.
She is survived by her daughter Jane (Richard) Thie, Bellaire, MI; son Dr. James (Camilla) Hughes, Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.
She was a graduate of DePauw University (33), University of Cincinnati, School of Social Work (35), member of Delta Zeta sorority and Eastern Star. Retired LSW, caseworker, supervisor, Cincinnati, Ohio area chapter American Red Cross. Resident of St. Leonard's Retirement Community, Centerville, Ohio 18 years. Member of Westwood United Methodist Church for 65 years. Attended Centerville United Methodist Church.
Services were at 11 a.m. Sat. April 22, Paul R. Young Funeral Home, Mt Healthy, Ohio. Pastor Randy Snyder , Crossview Christian Church, Waynesville, Ohio presiding. Burial Arlington Memorial Gardens, Mt Healthy, Ohio.

Jerry L. Kelley
Jerry L. Kelley 59, of Mancelona, died on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at his home. No services are planned at this time.
Interment will take place in Fort Custer National cemetery in Augusta, MI. Arrangements are being handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

John Kohlruss
Funeral services for John Kohlruss 89, of Bedford, TX, formerly of Central Lake, will take place on Saturday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
