Thomas Beamer
"You're the best," Thomas G. Beamer would say.
He really meant it. Whether you were his neighbor, the mailman, a clerk at Glen's - whoever you were, Tom Beamer could make you feel like a million. And he always remembered your name.
This warm, vibrant, people-loving man will be sorely missed.
Tom, 63, died of renal cancer June 23, 2006, at home with his family at his bedside.
"He loved being with people, entertaining them, interviewing them, and finding out all about their lives and activities," says his son, Kevin Beamer.
Born in Cincinnati on Dec. 3, 1942, the son of George Beamer, M.D., and Jane, a homemaker, Tom grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Indiana's Culver Military Academy. He was active in sports, especially baseball and hockey, even playing for the junior Red Wings as a teen.
Tom went to Western Michigan University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. While still in college, he met his future wife, Kathie McDonald, when both were summer interns for what was then the J. L. Hudson company in Detroit.
They wed in 1967 and made their home in Birmingham. Tom worked for Johnson & Johnson and Xerox, before joining a national executive recruiting company.
The family moved to the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights in 1975. The same year Tom started his own company, and eventually became a specialist in pharmaceutical recruiting. He forged strong ties with clients and recruits, who called him socially long after the business dealing was done.
After vacationing in Boyne for years, the Beamer family bought a vacation home in the area in 1997 and moved up to Boyne City permanently three years ago. They had just completed building their dream home in the hills overlooking Boyne and Lake Charlevoix.
"Dad loved Boyne," said son, Ian. "He would look out onto the lake and say, `You know, it just doesn't get any better than this.'"
Aside from family and home, Tom's greatest enjoyment came from baseball.
"He had a passion for it," said son Kevin. "He loved the Tigers and the Cubs. In Chicago, he was a season ticket holder for 20 years. At Wrigley Field., he was like the mayor. Everyone knew him _ the ushers, the vendors, the fans. They loved him.
"At home, he converted our recreation room into a baseball shrine. He had a replica of the Cubs' Wrigley Field scoreboard hung along with hundreds of memorabilia including photos, pennants, chairs, even baseball knobs on the cabinets and a grill in the shape of baseball."
"But he always said his greatest achievement was marrying my mom, whom he called `Duckie'" added Kevin.
Tom Beamer is survived by his wife, Kathie; sons, Kevin (Elizabeth) of St Paul, Minn., and Ian (Rossana) of Chicago; grandchildren, Alexander and Tatum; and sister, Ginny Jensen of Lake Bluff, Ill.
Kurt Wietzke, Tom's friend since kindergarten days, said, "Life with Tommy was a gift. We shared a life full of adventures with many twists and turns, but in the end, he was always there with care and love."
Jack Findley, who met Tom 38 years ago when they served as drill sergeants in the Army Reserve, remembers, "Tom was always interested in people no matter if they were the president of a company or your kid's friend in school. Tom loved to share his friends, and went out of his way to introduce new people to each other. And he genuinely appreciated anything you did for him or his family; his was always quick to hand write an eloquent `thank you' note. I don't know anyone who has known him that doesn't have a `Beamer Story' to share."
His family and friends mourn a man bigger than life, with a talent to bring out the best in others and an amazing ability to enrich the lives of those around him.
A memorial service was held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 27.
Contributions may be made to the Friends of the Boyne District Library for a memorial in Tom's name to be located in the library reading garden. The mailing address is 201 East Main, Boyne City, Mich. 49712.
