Marie Kathryn Vlieg, 88, of Imlay City, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at home.
She was born Feb. 11, 1915, in Drenthe, to Marinus and Gertrude (Lubbers) Brandt. She married Ralph H. Vlieg on Dec. 24, 1937, in Imlay City.
She grew up in the Drenthe-Zeeland area, but lived most of her life in Imlay City. She was a member of Imlay City Christian Reformed Church. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters, Beverly (Gerald) Stroman of Imlay City and Barbara (Arthur) Herzog of Flushing; son, Charles (Joan) Vlieg of Hudsonsville; grandchildren, Julie Newman, Jeffrey Stroman, Brian Vlieg, Amy Vlieg, Heather Martin, Christopher Herzog and Joshua Herzog; 12 great-grandchildren and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Art and Myrtle Vlieg of Imlay City, John Robert and Marie Vlieg of Grand Rapids, Anna Nykamp of Imlay City, Effie Bosker of Grand Rapids, and Alice and Herman Bonnema of Grand Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Henry Vlieg in 1995; grandson, Matthew Vlieg; parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Imlay City Christian School.
Funeral services were Wednesday (April 23) at Imlay City Christian Reformed Church, Imlay City. The Rev. Kenneth VanderHorst officiated. Burial was in Imlay Township cemetery.

Yvette Sawyer
Died: Saturday, April 19, 2003
Age: 86

Lapeer

Yvette Sawyer, 86, of Lapeer, died Saturday, April 19, 2003.
She was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Detroit, to Rene and Mantha (Forester) Lusignan.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Sandee) of St. Clair; daughter, Linda (John) Bohr of Livonia; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and sister, Jean Drummond of Lapeer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rene and Mantha (Forester) Lusignan.
Funeral services were Thursday (April 24) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. James Lorch officiated. Burial was in Glen Eden cemetery, Livonia.
Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.

Benny Kuxhaus
Died: Saturday, April 19, 2003

Lapeer

Benny Kuxhaus, 81, of Lapeer (formerly of Milwaukee, Wis.), died Saturday, April 19, 2003.
He was born July 25, 1921, in Okeene, Okla., to Fred and Anna (Fromm) Kuxhaus Sr. He married Gladys Brooks.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was the service and parts director for American Motors Corp. for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was an elder, an usher and in the Men’s Group at church. He was a member of the Lapeer Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Lapeer Masonic Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Lapeer; and nieces and nephews, Byron (Colleen) of Royal Oak, Patricia of Northville, Margaret (Robert) Robbins of Bloomfield, Juanita (Douglas) Hakala of Colorado, Dale of Colorado, David of Ashland, Ky., and Valeria Long of Grand Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Fred, Esther, Reuben and Otto Kuxhaus.
Memorial contributions may be made to Leader Dogs For The Blind.
Funeral services were Tuesday (April 22) at First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer. The Rev. Todd Smith officiated. Burial was in Imlay Township cemetery.

Bess I. Forbes, 56, of Mayfield Township died Saturday, April 19, 2003.
She was born Oct. 15, 1946, in Detroit to Leonard and Maybelle (Lodge) Chambers. She married Stuart Forbes on April 22, 1972, in Brown City.
She graduated from Marlette High School in 1965. She lived in the Lapeer area for nine years and previously lived in North Branch.
She is survived by her husband, Stuart; son, Kevin Cargill of Sharpes Chapel, Tenn.; daughters, Kelli (Wayne) Kirby of Marlette, Kerri (Troy) Conely of North Branch and Katti (Scott) Tabor of Towanda, Kan.; brothers, Edward Chambers of Columbia, Tenn., Donald (Tammy) Chambers of White Lake, Ronnie (Maurine) Chambers of Otter Lake, Gary (Shelly) Chambers of Sandusky and Richard (Lisa) Chambers of Otter Lake; sisters, Peggy Putnam of Wasilla, Alaska, and Trisha (Jim) Hastings of Croswell; and grandchildren, Amber, Jayson, Ryan, Garrett, Troy, Mariah, Mitchell and Kaelin.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Funeral services were Tuesday (April 22) at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette. The Rev. Larry VanSlambrook of the Open Door Missionary Church officiated. Burial was in the Marlette cemetery in Marlette.

Lamoine L. Brown
Died: Friday, April 18, 2003
Age: 96

Hillman

Lamoine L. Brown, 96, of Hillman (formerly of Dryden), died Friday, April 18, 2003.
He was born March 29, 1907, in Lima, Ohio, to George and Sadie (Nichols) Brown. He married Pearl Branum on July 8, 1959, in Barbourville, Ky..
He served in the Army during World War II. He was an electrician for the Fisher Body Division of General Motors, retiring in 1975. He was a born-again Christian, attended church for 45 years, and most recently attended Liberty Baptist Church in Lachine. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2356 of Hillman. He enjoyed bowling, jogging, playing pool and was an avid sports fan, especially baseball. He played some semi-pro baseball.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Brown of Hillman; children, Dorothy DesJardin of Lapeer, Jerry (Diane) McNeil of Attica, Mary Vodry of Lakeport, Barbara (Jim) Muir of Almont, Martha (Jim) DeLore of Mayville and JoAnna Brown of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Tammy Vatter, Kenneth McNeil, Charles McNeil, Joseph Leal, Angela Braet, Lynette Rapson, Jacob Muir, Michelle Reed, Christopher DeLore, Michael DeLore, Elizabeth DeLore, Lacey DeLore and Caleb DeLore; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Michelle Leal; siblings, Kenneth, Herschel, Jason, Milo, Georgiana Boyd; and parents, George and Sadie (Nichols) Brown.
Funeral services were Tuesday (April 22) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Richard Flanders officiated. Burial was in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Dryden.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Home of Frankenmuth. Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.

Dorothy Helen Dougherty
Died: Thursday, March 27, 2003
Age: 72

Columbiaville

Dorothy Helen (King) Dougherty, 72, of Columbiaville (formerly of New York, N.Y.), died Thursday, March 27, 2003.
She was born Feb. 23, 1931, in New York, N.Y., to Samuel and Charlotte (Seroka) King. She married John Dougherty on March 15, 1958, in Bronx, N.Y.
He was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of children, being outdoors and around family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Helen (Ivan) Andujar of Calif.; grandchildren, Ivan Andujar Jr., Alicia (Tom) Gregory and Keith Andujar, all of California; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Philip and Kaitlyn Gregory; special friends, Barbara and Crystal Star Kreger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Dougherty; and parents, Samuel and Charlotte King.
A luncheon was held in Dottie's honor on Sunday, (April 6) at Deerfield Township Hall.

Kelly Gene Knibbe
Died: Thursday, March 27, 2003
Age: 26

Attica

Kelly Gene Knibbe, 26, of Attica, died Thursday, March 27, 2003.
He was born Oct. 3, 1976, in Lapeer to Hank and Peggy (Harley) Knibbe.
He lived all of his life in the Lum-Attica area. He had been employed at Blake Murphy Bit Service. He was a member of the Class of 1995 at Imlay City High School and was a former member of the Imlay City Eagles.
He is survived by his daughter, Alexis Annette Knibbe of Lapeer; son, Nicholas Johnathon Knibbe of Attica; special friend, Jayme Stone of Lapeer; parents, Hank and Peggy Knibbe of Attica; brother, Kevin Dale Knibbe of Attica; grandmother, Henrietta Knibbe; niece, Lana Ann Knibbe; and nephew, Nathan William Knibbe.
Funeral services were Wednesday (April 2) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. Burial was in Arcadia Township cemetery, Lum.

Karl Dean Russell
Died: Thursday, March 27, 2003
Age: 55

South Lyon

Karl Dean Russell, 55, of South Lyon (formerly of Attica) died Thursday, March 27, 2003.
He was born Aug. 16, 1947, in Attica to Louis Dean and Lulu Mae (Hayes) Russell. He married Jeanette Moore on Jan. 4, 1974.
He moved to South Lyon in 1974 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church there. He loved camping and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Russell of South Lyon; daughters, Deborah (Glen) Dillon of Marion, Tammy (Trevor) Piasecki of Howell and Desiree Russell of South Lyon; brothers, Duane, Clayton and Roy; and sisters, Marilyn, Verna, Beverly and Deaneen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family for the children's education fund.
Funeral services were Monday (March 31) at the First United Methodist Church of South Lyon.
Arrangements by Phillips Funeral Home, South Lyon.
