Barton City

Cecil S. Stover, 74, of Barton City, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at home.
He was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Lapeer to Fred and Marquerite Stover. He married Dorothy DeYoung on June 11, 1949.
He lived most of his life in the Lapeer area. He and Dorothy had lived in Barton City since 1985. He retired from Dee Cramer Heating and Air. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union 533 and the Barton City Eagles Aerie 4141.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Barton City; daughters, Iris Lawrence of Alpena, Lee Ann (Mike) Baxter of Oscoda and Lisa (Jim) Sherrill of North Branch; sons, Marc (Darlene) of Columbiaville , Jon (Ruth Ann) of Lapeer and Fred (Janette) of Barton City; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Armstrong of Clifford; and two brothers, Kenneth of Deford and Gerald of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Marquerite Stover; brother, Daniel; and grandson, Benjamin Fisher.
Cremation has taken place.

Norberto L. Escamilla
Died: Sunday, January 19, 2003
Age: 73

Attica

Norberto L. Escamilla, 73, of Attica, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.
He was born June 6, 1929, in Laredo, Texas, to Luis and Virginia (Arce) Escamilla. He married Catalina Castillo on Oct. 1, 1955, at St. Vincent Church in Pontiac.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Hispanic community, putting together the first Mexican Fiesta in Imlay City in September of 1969. He worked with the Hispanic Community Center in Imlay City and Capac and proudly served his country in the Korean War. He enjoyed Mexican dancing, socializing and serving the church and his community.
He is survived by his wife, Catalina Escamilla of Attica; children, Estela Escamilla of Lansing, Miguel (Ann) Escamilla of Oxford, Rico Escamilla of Lapeer and Susana Escamilla; and grandchildren, Raquel Escamilla, Daniele Lina Mari Wilcox, Mercedes Berlin and Micaela Berlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, Francisca Arce; and uncle, Antonio Arce.
Memorial contributions may be made to McLaren Hospice, Lapeer.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 23) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lapeer. The Revs. Douglas Terrien and Janusz Iwan will officiate with Deacon Jerry Deshaw assisting. Burial will be in Mount Loretto cemetery.

Ralph Milton Smith
Died: Sunday, January 19, 2003

Imlay City

Ralph Milton Smith, 86, of Imlay City, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, suddenly at home.
He was born Aug. 12, 1916, in North Branch to Milton and Bessie (Switzer) Smith. He married Zola Marie Weyer in Bowling Green, Ohio on Oct. 23, 1948.
He lived in the Imlay City area for 50 years, previously of Detroit and Buffalo, N.Y. He graduated from high school in Detroit and served in the Army Air Corp. as a staff sergeant during World War II. He was employed as a logistical comptroller in the Shipping Department at the Flint Chevrolet Assembly Plant for 34 years and also doing carpentry with Lou Pickleman. He was a life member of the Imlay City Free and Accepted Masons and the Royal Arch Masons. He and his wife traveled all over the world.
He is survived by his wife, Zola Smith of Imlay City; daughter, Caroline Sue Pearson of Canton; sons, Dale Allen (Susanna) Smith of Greenwood, Ind., and Brian R. Smith of Naperville, Ill.; grandchildren, Sean Smith, Adam Smith and Michelle (Chris) Costa; and brother, Loren Smith of East Pointe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Bessie Smith; brother, Jim Smith; and sister, Betty Ann Seleske.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 23) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. The Rev. Keller will officiate. Burial will be in Imlay Township cemetery.

Raymond H. Martin
Died: Tuesday, January 14, 2003
Age: 87

Brown City

Raymond H. "Okie" Martin, 87, of Brown City, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Lapeer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1915, in Brewer, Okla., to Earl and Minnie (Sanchez) Martin. He married Violet Bernice Lambson in February, 1942, in Reno, Nev.
He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a truck driver and also worked building dams and roads. Later on he was a self-employed cement finisher. He was a member of the Brown City Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his children, Raymond of Vancouver, Wash., Donald (Linda) of Brown City, Donna (David) Willing of Imlay City and Doris (Ed) Smith of Brown City; grandchildren, Sandy, Tammy, Ray, Donnie, Suzanne, Tara, Jennifer, Cristie and Ryan; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl and Arthur; and sisters, Agnes Edmond, Ruth Wise and Midge Sandoval.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet; sister, Minnie Hickman; and brother, Wallace.
Funeral services were Friday (Jan. 17) at Carman Funeral Home, Brown City. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Brown City.

Clarence Elwyn Geil
Died: Monday, January 13, 2003
Age: 89

Attica

Clarence Elwyn "Buster" Geil, 89, of Attica, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his home.
He was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Rochester, to John and Jennie (Hotham) Geil. He married Stella Emily Healy on June 15, 1940, in Pontiac.
He spent all of his life between Rochester and Attica. He worked doing bulk milk hauling for 16 years in Oakland and Lapeer counties. He also raised beef cattle. He was a charter member of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dryden and was instrumental in the church building program. He was a member of the "Hix & Chix" Square Dance group for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Geil of Attica; daughter, Jean (Robert) Miller of Rochester; sons, Elwyn (Jean) Geil of Rochester and Ralph (Karen) Geil of Ohio; grandchildren, David Miller, Charles Miller, Aaron Miller, Wendy Geil, Traci Gerdenan and Loren Geil; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie Geil; brother, Floyd Geil; and sister, Ruth Rathka.
Funeral services were Thursday (Jan. 16) at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dryden. The Rev. Steven Helms officiated. Burial was in Attica Township cemetery, Attica.

Lloyd Fuller
Died: Monday, January 13, 2003
Age: 92

Lapeer

Lloyd Fuller, 92, of Lapeer, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at home with his family. He was born Sept. 18, 1910 in Flint. He married Katherine Louise Loomis on Feb. 14, 1934. He later married Bernice M. Ward on Aug. 31, 1956.
He graduated from Capac High School in 1929. He retired from the heating and plumbing business. At the age of 75 he started a career in stained glass, making lamps, windows and most recently American flags. He was more often referred to as the "Angel Man" because he made dozens and dozens of angels of every color. He enjoyed this hobby as well as a card game anywhere at anytime. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Duane) LaBair of Mayville, Sandra March of White Lake and Susan (Matthew) Peraino of Clarkston; step-children, George (Betty) Ward of Millington, LuAnne Miller of Dryden and James (Cathy) Galesburg; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Louise Fuller on Dec. 5, 1955.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lapeer Trinity Methodist Church or the Lapeer County Visiting Nurse and Hospice.

Grace M. Steffes
Died: Sunday, January 12, 2003
Age: 87

Lapeer

Grace M. Steffes, 87, of Lapeer, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
She was born Nov. 7, 1915, in Flint to Joseph and Eulah Albertson. She married Richard Earl Steffes.
She graduated from Central High School and Cleary College in Ypsilanti. During World War II, she worked at Fisher Body in Flint. She was also employed by GMAC, Elba Elementary School and Michigan School for the Deaf. She retired from the State of Michigan.
She is survived by her sons, Tim (Frances) of Lakewood, Colo., Greg (Kay) of Kerrville, Texas; grandson, Jeff (Trina) of Houston, Texas, Richard (Shelley) of Lochbule, Colo., Greg (Cathy) of Lakewood, Colo., and Brant of Grand Rapids; great-grandson, Isaac of Houston, Texas; and cousins, Jean Manos of Greenville, and Sue Booky of Big Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; parents and sister.
Funeral services were Thursday (Jan. 16) at Allen Funeral Home, Davison. The Rev. Yung Chou officiated. Burial was in Davison cemetery.

Ann E. Zyber
Died: Sunday, January 12, 2003
Age: 90

Mt. Morris

Ann E. Zyber, 90, of Mount Morris, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Fostrian Manor, Flushing.
She was born June 6, 1912, in Niebylec, Poland, to John and Stephania (Koza) Smela. She married Casimir Zyber on June 10, 1931, at All Saints Catholic Church in Flint.
She worked for Bell Telephone. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and sang in the choir.
She is survived by her children, Dr. David (Marilyn) of Metamora, Stephanie (Jim) Janowski of Dexter, Rosalie (Leonard) Stumm of Clio and Dolores Massicotte of West Chester, Pa.; grandchildren, Scott, Kristin Daggett, Karen Arnould, Christopher Stumm, Peter Stumm, Diane Maheras, Paul Stumm, Tracey Liberacki, Danny Massicotte, David Massicotte, Marianne Schwer, Andrea Potter, Jeff Janowski, Cindy Donovan, Chip Underwood and Ryan Underwood; 23 great-grandchildren, sisters, Sister Vivian SSPS and Irene Urbanik; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Casimir Zyber on Feb. 20, 2002; parents and brothers, John, Joseph, Frank, Tony and Stanley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Visitation was Wednesday (Jan. 15). A parish rosary was Wednesday at Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mount Morris. A prayer is at 10:35 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 16).
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mount Morris. The Rev. Raymond Urbanek will officiate. Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park.
