Louis Edward Crake
Died: Friday, January 03, 2003

Imlay City

Louis Edward Crake, 87, of Imlay City, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
He was born May 27, 1915, in Brown City to Edward and Emma (Hagner) Crake. He married Phyllis Schuneman on Sept. 30, 1939. in Goodland Township.
He attended Sharpesville Country School. He lived most of his life in the Imlay City area. He was employed by M&M Plumbing and Heating of Imlay City for 24 years, farmed in Goodland Township and worked 12 years at Lapeer County Medical Care Facility (Suncrest) before retiring in 1983. He was a member of West Goodland United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Crake of Imlay City; daughters, Janice Strong of Imlay City and Laraine (Dr. David) Brower of Grand Blanc; son, Jerry (Carol) Crake of Brown City; grandchildren, Robert Brieger, Rebecca Brieger Dormire, Dena Kelley and Rachel Werth; and great-grandchildren, Nikkail Dormire, Brieanna Dormire, Ashley Kelley and Hayley Werth.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dale E. Crake; daughter, Patty Crake; parents, Edward and Emma Crake; brothers, Gerald Crake and Vern Crake; and sisters, Genevieve Greenhoe, Vera Owens and Iva Crake North.
Memorial contributions may be made to West Goodland United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were Monday (Jan. 6) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. The Revs. Jimmy and Pam Barnett officiated. Burial was in Imlay Township cemetery.

Elmer Maynard McHugh
Died: Thursday, January 02, 2003
Age: 90

Oscoda/Lapeer

Elmer Maynard McHugh, 90, of Oscoda and Lapeer (formerly of Flint), died Thursday ,Jan. 2, 2003.
He was born June 18, 1912, in Davison to Bernard and Frances (Williams) McHugh. He married Estelle Ward on Feb. 21, 1942, in Angola, Ind.
He served in the Army and retired from General Motors. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and making people laugh. His "Elmerisms" will especially be remembered.
He is survived by his loving children, Nancy Thompson of Lithonia, Ga., Judy McHugh of Bedford, Texas, Bunny (Ernie) Santos of Las Vegas, Nev., John McHugh of Waterford, George (Tracey) McHugh of Lapeer, Fran Ziegler of Bedford and Kathy (Chuck) Leaf of St. Charles, Mo.; 12 dear grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a half-sister, Ina Cook; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle (Ward) McHugh; parents, Bernard and Frances McHugh; two brothers and three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Genesys Hospice of Goodrich or the charity of your choice.
Funeral services were Monday (Jan. 6) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial was in Gracelawn cemetery, Flint.

Jennie B. Calvelli
Died: Wednesday, January 01, 2003
Age: 77

Santee, Calif.

Jennie B. (Minkstein) Calvelli, 77, of Santee, Calif. (formerly of Lapeer and North Branch), died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003 at her home, after a battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 14, 1925, to John and Maybelle (Fullson) Minkstein.
She graduated from North Branch High School in 1942. During the war she worked at the tank plant in Detroit. Following that she moved back to Lapeer and worked for Bell Telephone Co. until she married Carlo Calvelli. They owned Calvelli Lounge and Dining Room in Lapeer until their retirement in 1976. She loved to golf, bowl and play cards. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Lapeer.
She is survived by her brother, Edward (Florence) Minkstein of North Branch; sisters, Lenora (Eugene) Jambor of Okemos and JoAn (Fred) Crawford of North Branch; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlo Calvelli on Dec. 30, 2002; and her parents, John and Maybelle (Fullson) Minkstein.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mass Cards, Sharp Hospice Care or charity of your choice.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31) at the funeral home.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Saturday (Feb. 1) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Douglas Terrien will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Loretto cemetery, Lapeer.

A. Howard Lee
Died: Wednesday, January 01, 2003
Age: 88

Lexington

A. Howard "Honey" Lee, 88, of Lexington, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003 at his daughter's home in Reed City.
He was born April 21, 1914, in Brown City, to Albert and Minnie (Campbell) Lee. He attended school in Brown City. He married Nell Little on Aug. 30, 1947.
They lived in Almont, Lexington and Palm Harbor during the year. He was the financial adviser for American Express in Almont. He was owner of Almont Recreation, a restaurant and bowling alley, for 27 years. He was member of the Baptist Church in Brown City and the Almont Lions Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and free time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Nell; daughter, Peggy Brackett of Reed City; son, Jim (Rita) Worm of Florida; grandchildren, Deb (Tom) Aten of Big Rapids, Tammy (Matt) Babcock of Reed City, Carol of Florida and David of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Kermit Little of New Mexico; and nephew, Mark Little of New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and a grandson, Lee.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday (Jan. 10) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont. The Rev. Larry W. Rieck of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Reed City.

Berniece Virginia Selberg

Sevierville, Tenn.

Berniece Virginia Selberg, 86, of Sevierville, Tenn. (formerly of Lake Angelus, Michigan), died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003.
She was born July 30, 1916, in Detroit to Jack and Mary Easley. She married Francis Gordon Selberg in Hazel Park.
She is survived by her children, Donna (Kenneth) Kirk of Lapeer, Gordon (Peggy) Selberg of Sevierville, Tenn., and Edith Hamilton of New Port Richey, Fla.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Gordon Selberg.
A memorial service was at Rawlings Funeral Home, Sevierville, Tenn.

Stanley Dombrowski
Died: Wednesday, January 01, 2003
Age: 86

Almont

Stanley Dombrowski, 86, of Almont, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy.
He was born July 8, 1916, in Detroit to Louis and Mary (Czieke) Dombrowski. He married Katherine Herzig on December 31, 1938, in Imlay City.
He retired from L&L Products of Romeo, then went on to several jobs, including managing the Detroit Broach Farms in Almont and driving a school bus for Almont Community Schools. He also put water and sewer lines in for the Village of Almont and worked in parts and sales at LaHaies Auto. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Allenton, where he served with the Ushers Club and the Holy Name Society. He was a fourth-degree member of the St. Lawrence Knights of Columbus in Utica and a third-degree member of the Lady Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus in Imlay City. He was also active with the Almont Boy Scouts, serving as the treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; children, Stella (Richard) Duckert of Brown City, Katherine (James) Bollaert of Attica, Rosemary (Arthur) Feys of Lapeer, Stanley Louis Steve (Patricia) Dombrowski of Midland, Stephanie (James) Brennan of Gaylord, Anthony Paul (Tara) Dombrowski of Gaylord and Michael (Lynn) Dombrowski of Marietta, Ga.; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sisters, Helen Clydesdale of Romeo and Anna Pertturn of Warren; and brother, Walter Dombrowski of Fenton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Theresa Mary; brothers, Theodore, Chester, John, Bruno and Frank; and sister, Stella Hurst.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice or The Almont Area Senior Center.
A Funeral Mass was Sunday (Jan. 5) at St. John Catholic Church in Allenton. The Rev. Jerry Frawley officiated. Burial was in Ferguson cemetery in Almont.

Isabel Liblong
Died: Tuesday, December 31, 2002
Age: 88

Almont

Isabel Liblong, 88, of Almont, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002.
She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Capac to William J. and Maybelle (McKee) Martin. She married Joseph Liblong on Oct. 29, 1937, in Grand Blanc.
She worked at Hurd Lock, Chapoton's Clothing Store in Almont and as an operator for the phone company in Almont. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and worked with the Women's Fellowship. She was also in the Almont Literary Club.
She is survived by her sons, Larry (Carol) Liblong of Lapeer and John Liblong of Imlay City; grandchildren, Lisa (Corey) Bristol of Attica, Troy (Amy) Liblong of Capac, Jennifer (Allen) Dillon of Almont and LeAnne Liblong of Marlette; six great-grandsons; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Martin of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1990; brothers, Maynard and Jack Martin; and sisters, Minnie Cooper, Francis Cooper, Zelda Dalrymple and Marion Kenny.
Funeral services were Friday (Jan. 3) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Almont. The Rev. Larry W. Rieck of the First Congregational Church officiated.

Carlo C. Calvelli
Died: Monday, December 30, 2002
Age: 80

Santee, Calif.

Carlo C. Calvelli, 80, of Santee, Calf. (formerly of Lapeer), died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Kaiser Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, Calif., due to heart problems.
He was born June 14, 1922, to Louis and Josephine (Spadafore) Calvelli.
He married Jennie Minkstein.
He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1940. He worked at the Flint AC plant from 1940-42. In 1942 the Army recruited at the plant for volunteers for a new proposed Ordinance Unit. He joined and was stationed in California and France. He was discharged on Dec. 3, 1945. He then worked with his father, operating the Marshall House 1957-1968 (building burned in 1968). In 1967 the business was passed on to him after the death of his father. In 1969 he and Jennie bought a small bar called the Ox Yolk Inn across the street from the AC plant in Flint. They sold the bar in 1969 to move back to Lapeer. From 1970 until his 1976 retirement, he and Jennie bought the Road Commission Building and opened the Calvelli Lounge and Dining Room.
He is survived by his sisters, Theresa (Howard) Blazo, Pauline Calvelli and Rose Calvelli Kirk, all of Lapeer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Josephine (Spadafore) Calvelli; brother, 2nd Lt. Frank Calvelli; and nieces, Gwen Blazo and Michelle Blazo.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mass Cards, Sharp Hospice Care or the charity of your choice.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Friday (Jan. 31) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
