James R. Winterbottom, 39, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003.
He was born Nov. 20, 1963, in Queens, N.Y., to Gary and Barbara (Montgomery) Winterbottom.
He graduated from Lapeer West High School, Class of 1981. He worked many years in the demolition industry, both as a laborer and an equipment operator. He loved snowmobiles, was a huge Red Wings fan and he loved to shoot pool. He was a lifetime resident of Lapeer.
He is survived by his father, Gary Winterbottom of Midland; brothers, Rick (Mary) Winterbottom of Columbiaville and Gary J. Winterbottom of Lapeer; nephew, Wade Winterbottom of Columbiaville; niece, Sami Winterbottom of Columbiaville; and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Winterbottom in 1992; and his grandparents.
Funeral services were Saturday (March 8) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Janusz Iwan officiated. Burial was in Mount Loretto cemetery, Lapeer.

Earl Gibbs Jr.
Died: Wednesday, March 05, 2003
Age: 81

Lapeer

Earl Gibbs Jr., 81, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003.
He was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Rochester to Earl and Ethel (Brown) Gibbs Sr. He married Evelyn "Bonnie" Gibbs on September 4, 1942, in Oxford.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the Lapeer County Road Commission, retiring in 1980. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a devoted father and grandfather.
He is survived by his children, Robert (Bonnie) Gibbs of Davison and Beverly (Bob) Auel of Toivola; grandchildren, Sherri Lynn Gibbs of Lapeer, Kimberly (Mark) Janulin of Illinois, Kerri Bird of Davison, Todd (Janet) Auel of Indiana and Jason Auel of Toivola; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn "Bonnie" Gibbs in 1997; parents, grandson, Robert; and sister, Esther Bice.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, World War II Veterans Memorial or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services were Saturday (March 8) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer, with a military graveside service under the auspices of the American Legion Post 16 Honor Guard.

Marie Virginia Laarman
Died: Tuesday, March 04, 2003

Imlay City

Marie "Mary" Virginia Laarman, 69, of Imlay City, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Port Huron.
She was born April 22, 1933, in Warren to Stanley and Eleanor (Sekley) Cojanu.
She lived most of her life in the Imlay City area and graduated from Imlay City High School in 1951. She had been employed as the office manager of the Lane-Swayze Clinic in Almont for about 20 years. She then worked at the Ferguson Convalescent Home in Lapeer, before retiring in 1999.
She is survived by her children, Karen (Wally) Northrop of Attica, Kim (Steve) Kingsbury of Attica, Koleen (Jim) McVeigh of Allenton, Kelly Laarman of Imlay City and Greg Groves of Ontario; grandchildren, Jeremiah Kingsbury, Joshua Kingsbury, Ethan Kingsbury, Ashley Kingsbury, Katelyn McVeigh, Katherine McVeigh and Nathen McVeigh; sisters, Lucielle Williams of Brown City and Janice Symanski of Troy; brothers, Stanley Cojanu Jr. of Texas and Jack Cojanu of Centerline; sister-in-law, Clara Cojanu of Sterling Heights; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Eleanor Cojanu; and brother, Mitchell Cojanu.
A graveside service was Saturday (March 8) at Mount Calvary cemetery, Imlay City. The Rev. Wayne Ureel officiated. Burial was in Mount Calvary cemetery, Imlay City.

Ruth Ann Haney
Died: Monday, March 03, 2003
Age: 74

Almont

Ruth Ann J. Haney, 74, of Almont, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Medilodge of Yale.
She was born April 4, 1928, in Detroit to Foster and Bernice (Roberts) Jones. She married Dr. Merle B. Haney on Dec. 27, 1952, in Wynona Lake, Ind.
She grew up in Detroit and Warsaw, Ind. She graduated from Manchester College in Indiana, and studied voice for a year at the Lansing Conservatory of Music. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was very involved with the Imlay City United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Merle B. Haney of Almont; daughters, Beth (Robert) Haney-Heckart of Almont and JoAnn (Jerard) Herbert of Jeffersonville, Pa.; grandchildren, Rebecca Heckert and Carolyn Herbert; sister, Margaret (Alfred) Johnson of Seneca Falls, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Ellen Jones of Farmington Hills.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Foster and Bernice Jones; son, Paul Haney in 1983; and brother, Robert Jones.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Paul Haney Ministerial Training Fund at the Imlay City United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Saturday (March 15) at Imlay City United Methodist Church, Imlay City.
A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Saturday at Imlay City United Methodist Church, Imlay City. The Rev. Kevin Harbin will officiate.

Irene Lee
Died: Saturday, March 01, 2003
Age: 87

Marlette

Irene Lee, 87, of Marlette, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Marlette Community Hospital's Hospice House in Marlette.
She was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Ubly to Peter and Laura (Grifka) Osentoski. She married Harold J. Lee in Detroit on Nov. 18, 1939.
She was a lifelong area resident, a lifetime member of the Decker Order of the Eastern Star and the Michigan Farm Bureau and Extension.
She is survived by her children, Robert (Barbara) of Lapeer, Diane Chapel of Clifford, Lucille Glowzinski of Florida and Minnie Cook of Harbor Beach; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold on Nov. 6, 1999; sisters, Theresa and Anna; and brothers, Lloyd, John, Clarence, Lou, Eddy and Roy.
Memorial contributions may be made to United Hospice.
Funeral services were Tuesday (March 4) at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette. The Rev. Kenneth Parker officiated. Burial was in Moshier cemetery, Hemans.

Robert W. Creger
Died: Saturday, March 01, 2003
Age: 66

Almont

Robert W. Creger, 66, of Almont, died Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Hamilton Medical Center, Dalton, Ga.
He was born July 17, 1936, in Capac to Leonard and Margaret (Gibbs) Creger. He married Patricia Justin at Fort Hood, Texas, on Jan 6, 1956.
He was very athletic in high school playing football and basketball. He coon hunted with his father and was full of life from the day he entered this world. He graduated from Almont High School then from Cass Tech in Detroit with a degree in heating and air conditioning. He later became a master plumber.
He married his wife, Patricia, while he was serving as a sergeant in the Army, during the Korean War. He was a caring man, serving his town and helping anyone who needed help, always putting others before himself. He served on the Almont Fire Department and coached baseball in Almont. He suffered a massive heart attack while driving home from Cape Canaveral, Fla. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and business man. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Diane (Jeffrey) Grapentin of Imlay City and Denise (Robert) Hirschmann of Fraser; sons, Robert Jr. (Mary) of Armada, Richard (Lisa) of Almont and Rodney (Hannelore) of Almont; 18 grandchildren; sister, Lucille (Elmer) Brinker of Imlay City; and brother, David (Linda) of Almont.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Funeral services were Wednesday (March 5) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont. Diane Grapentin will officiate. Burial will be in Ferguson cemetery, Almont.

Linda Shoebottom
Died: Friday, February 28, 2003
Age: 54

Lapeer

Linda Shoebottom, 54, of Lapeer, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at home.
She was born Sept. 24, 1948, in Williamsburg, Ky., to Bill Petrey and Betty Zenser of Indiana. She married Gary E. Shoebottom on April 23, 1982, in Mio.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Gary; son, Eugene of Lapeer; mother, Betty Zenser of Indiana; sister, Lucinda (Jerry) White of Arizona; mother-in-law, Laila of Deckerville; brother-in-law, Karl (Janet) of Riverdale; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Petrey.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elba Lions Club.
Funeral services were Tuesday (March 4) at Hacker Funeral Parlors, Sandusky. The Rev. Robert Srock of Jeddo officiated. Burial was in Downing cemetery, Deckerville.

Shirley M. Mackela

Lyman, S.C.

Shirley M. (Walls) Mackela, 53, of Lyman, S.C. (formerly of East Jordan), died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at home.
She was born Sept. 30, 1949, in Pontiac to Albert Charles and Maxine June (Aker) Kandt. She married Don Mackela in Petoskey in February 1995.
She grew up in Pontiac-Toledo, Ohio, and attended Start High School in Toledo, Ohio. She enjoyed fishing, bingo, crafts, gardening, photography, sailing and sewing.
She is survived by her husband, Don of Lyman, S.C.; son, Kirk Walls; daughter, Erica Walls of Pontiac; brother, Al (Lois) Kanot of Indian River; sister, Carolyn (Charles) Griffin of North Branch; nieces, Barb, Dawn, Wendy, Jennifer, Becky Patty and Destiny; and nephews, Mark and Frank.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday (March 8) at Christ Lutheran Church, 1250 Boyne Ave., Boyne City. The Rev. Kenneth Bernthal will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Petoskey.
