Grayling

Leo Paul Walker, 60, of Grayling (formerly of Mayville), died Wednesday (Oct. 16, 2002) at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City.
He was born Aug. 30, 1942, in Bad Axe. He married Loretta Taylor.
As a young man he moved to the Pontiac area and then to Mayville just prior to retiring to Grayling. He and Loretta were married for 40 years. He was employed as a troubleshooter for General Motors, working last in Lake Orion. He was a member of the Gold Wing Association and the Grayling Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3465. His favorite past time was riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and plowing snow.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta; children, Diana Umphery of Marlette and Judith A. (Jim) Swoffer of Caro; grandchildren, Michael Umphery, Paul Swoffer and Marissa Umphery; siblings, Robert (Shirley) Walker of Caro, Raymond (Carolyn) Walker of Arizona, Marion Walker of Florida, Elsie Walker of Florida, Richard (Allisha) Walker of Clarkston, the Rev. Bertha (the Rev. George Alley) of Ohio and Harold Walker of Clarkston; step-mother, Edna Walker of Clarkston; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lila, and her husband, Cleo Haggadone; father, Dillis W. Walker; daughter, Lisa Ann Walker; and brother, John Walker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grayling F.O.E. Aerie 3465.
Funeral services were Saturday (Oct. 19) at Collon Funeral Home, Caro. The Rev. Ronald Wigand officiated. Burial was in Dawn Memorial Estates cemetery, Lapeer.

Mary Jean Dick
Died: Tuesday, October 15, 2002
Age: 83

Lapeer

Mary Jean (Dunning) Dick, 83, of Lapeer, died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002) at Genesys Health Park, Grand Blanc.
She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Hart.
She and her first husband, George Dunning, owned and operated the Hadley Telephone Co. from 1944-1979 until their retirement in 1979.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Douglas) Walker of Lapeer; son, Burton R. (Susan) Dunning of Essex Junction, Vt.; grandchildren, Joel (Traci) Walker, Stephen Dunning, Lucien Dunning; great-grandson, Nicholas Walker; special friend, Irene Eckel; and her extended family in Canada.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Dunning; and by her second husband, James Dick.
Cremation had taken place. A graveside service was Saturday (Oct. 19) at Hart cemetery. The Rev. Boucon officiated.
Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Flint.

Thomas M. Ravert
Died: Tuesday, October 15, 2002
Age: 73

Pensacola, Fla.

Thomas M. Ravert, 73, of Pensacola, Fla. (formerly of Lapeer), died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002).
He was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Plymouth, Pa., to Thomas and Avis (Hicks) Ravert.
He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a pipe fitter at Pontiac Motors for 27 years, retiring in 1982. He was a committee man at the United Auto Workers Local 653. He also served as a shop steward for Pontiac Motors. He was an avid pheasant hunter, having raised his own beagle dogs, Samantha and Rex.He had a passion for his dogs. He attended the Baptist Church in Florida and formerly the Elba Baptist Church.
He is survived by children, James Ravert of Utah, Gary (Christine) Ravert of California, Terry Lee (Lillian) Ravert of Otisville, Nancy (Ron) Habelitz of California, Donna (Paul) Orum of California, Chris (Sharon) Ravert of Milan, Arch (Shari) Ravert of Swartz Creek, Ruth (Fiancˇ, Randy Anderson) Bowles of Lapeer and Tim (Jeanie) Ravert of Brooklyn; mother of his children, Ruth White Ravert of Davison; 31 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sisters, Avis Bombay of New Jersey, Edith Jacobs of New Jersey, Betty Kohler of Oregon, Nancy Wright of Florida and Ann Halpin of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Thomas Ravert in 1967 andWilliam Ravert in 1980; and his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family, checks payable to Chris Ravert.
Funeral services were Saturday (Oct. 19) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Norman Farver officiated. Burial was in Green Corners cemetery in Hadley, followed with a military graveside service under the auspices of the American Legion Post 16 Honor Guard.

Gilbert James Nighswander
Died: Tuesday, October 15, 2002
Age: 82

Lapeer

Gilbert James Nighswander, 82, of Lapeer (formerly of Tecumseh), died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002) at Lapeer County Medical Facility.
He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Bettsville, Ohio, to Amandus and Vesta (Handy) Nighswander. He married Grace Ann Harvey on Oct. 8, 1941, in Coldwater.
He worked 37 years for GTE. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tecumseh, the Tecumseh Odd Fellows Lodge and the Tecumseh American Legion Underwood-Orr Post 34. He served in the Army in World War II in the European theater from 1944-1946.
He is survived by his children, James (Barbara) Nighswander of Luzerne, Nancy Jo (Ernie) Mercer of Lapeer and Richard Nighswander of Tecumseh; grandchildren, Andrew (Samantha) Nighswander, Peggy Holsinger, Tammy Jo (Steve) Anderson, Beverly Jo Parker and Janet (Tom) Allen; and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Katherine, Brandy, Nicole, Mariah, Ashley, Laura, Michael, Kaylee Jo, Amber Jo, Stephanie Grace and Evan Timothy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace on Aug. 31, 2002; grandsons, Timothy Marston and Michael Nighswander; sister, Betty Johnson; and brother, Carl Nighswander.
Funeral services were Friday (Oct. 18) at Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh. The Rev. Doug Winters officiated. Burial was in Brookside cemetery, Tecumseh, with military honors conducted by the Tecumseh American Legion Post 34 and the Tecumseh V.F.W. Post 4187.

Sandra Lynn Olejniczak
Died: Monday, October 14, 2002
Age: 53

Sandra Lynn Olejniczak, 53, of Lapeer (formerly of Berkley), died Monday (Oct. 14, 2002).
She was born March 24, 1949, in Detroit, to Richard and Barbara (Nuckles) Coatta. She married Mitchell J. Olejniczak Jr. in Detroit on May 23, 1969.
She lived in Lapeer for the past eight years. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She loved her job as the owner-operator of "Wonder Years" children's day care. She enjoyed gardening, the family swimming pool, Saunders hot fudge, the card game "Spoon" and traveling to East Jordan and Charlevoix. The family will remember her as a perfect and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend who touched everyone she met, and will be missed.
She is survived by her husband, Mitch Olejniczak Jr. of Lapeer; children, Joseph Olejniczak of Metamora, Rebecca Olejniczak of Lapeer and Katherine Olejniczak of Lapeer; parents, Richard and Barbara Coatta of Mayville; mother-in-law, Betty Olejniczak of Troy; siblings, Suzanne (Michael) McBride of Mayville, Deana (Gordon) Wallace of White Lake, Richard (Mary) Coatta of White Lake, Lisa (George) Hamil of Orlando, Fla., Lori (Steve) Gaines of Howell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Mitchell Olejniczak Sr.; and all of her grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Building Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services were Wednesday (Oct. 16) at St. John the Evangelist, Davison. The Rev. Andrew Czajkowski officiated.

Lyle D. Goodrich
Died: Monday, October 14, 2002

Lyle D. Goodrich, 89, of Lapeer, died Monday (Oct. 14, 2002).
He was born June 16, 1913, in Lum to Norman and Elva (Craig) Goodrich. He married Nola M. Harley on Sept. 15, 1934.
He was the Lapeer County treasurer for 45 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Lapeer.
He is survived by wife, Nola Goodrich of Lapeer; daughter, Judith (Harold) Middleton of Florida; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and siblings, Arnold (Elaine) Goodrich of Attica, Avery (Virginia) Goodrich of Cheboygan, Myrtle Birkenhauer of Attica and Norma Jean McDowell of Columbiaville.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gerald Goodrich; parents, Norman and Elva Goodrich; and siblings, Earl Goodrich, Clare Goodrich, Floyd Goodrich, Norman Goodrich, Marion Houghtaling, Muriel Nelson and Mary Rutherford.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Lapeer Area Hospice.
Funeral services were Thursday (Oct. 17) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Arnold Bracy officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Dorothy Lucy Bade
Died: Monday, October 14, 2002
Age: 88

Dorothy Lucy Bade, 88, of Capac, died Monday (Oct. 14, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital, Lapeer.
She was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Acton, Ontario, Canada, to James and Jessie (Matthew) Smith. She married Lawrence H. Bade in 1942.
She attended schools in Toronto, Detroit and Farmington. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree and from Michigan State University with a master's degree. She taught in Imlay City, Farmington and Capac. She was a member of Michigan Education Association, Eastern Star, Blue Water Reading Council, Capac Community Historical Society and Zion United Methodist Church, Capac.
She is survived by her children, James (Sandra) of Washington and Gordon (Nancy) of Lapeer; granddaughter, Jennifer (Tim) Caister of Vaparaiso, Ind.; sister, Carol (Bruce) of New Jersey; sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Rose City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence on Aug. 16, 1962; and her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to Capac Historical Society or Capac Library.
Funeral services were Wednesday (Oct. 16) at Zion Methodist Church, Capac. The Rev. Hal Phillips officiated. Burial was in the Evangelical cemetery, Capac.

Arthur Leon Davis
Died: Saturday, October 12, 2002
Age: 81

Lapeer

Arthur Leon Davis, 81, of Lapeer, died Saturday (Oct. 12, 2002).
He had lived in Lapeer since 1979. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 16 of Lapeer. He was a devoted husband for 60 years to his wife Louise.
He is survived by his wife, Louise; children, Bernard (Elaine) Davis, Art Davis and Julie Davis; grandchildren, Tim, Richard, Theresa and Amanda; two great-grandchildren and special friend, Loretta Robinson.
A memorial service was Wednesday (Oct. 16) at the American Legion Hall, Lapeer.
Arrangements by Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer.
