Died: Wednesday, July 31, 2002
Age: 59

Cass City

Sue A. Baker, 59, of Cass City, died Thursday (July 25, 2002) at Harper Hospital, Detroit after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born June 18, 1943, in Detroit, to Charles and Sue Amanda (Andrews) Ritter. She married Thomas Baker in North Branch on May 1, 1965.
She graduated from Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing with a LPN degree. She worked for Tendercare Nursing Facility since 1980, serving as Infection Control Director, teaching CENA classes and in many other capacities. She taught nursing classes at the Tuscola County Skill Center. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was President of Aid Association for Lutherans, served on Ladies Aid and was a member of the adult choir. She enjoyed attending the theater and retreats with friends. She loved to work, loved having friends and family gather in her home, and loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (Craig Walsh) Baker of Cass City and Julie (Don) Roemer of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Heather Nicole, Alyson Grace and the newest grandchild (baby Roemer due in September); sisters, Mary (Dale) Lanway of Clifford and Margaret (Stan) Lewiski of North Branch; brother, Jim (Andrea) Ritter of Mountain Home, Ark; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Cathy and Fred Sullivan of Gagetown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and nephew, Christen Lewiski.
Memorial contributions may be made to Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Funeral services were Monday (July 29, 2002) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Cass City. The Rev. Gerald Meyer officiated. Burial was in Westlawn cemetery, North Branch.

Donald E. Lazar
Died: Tuesday, July 30, 2002
Age: 47

Brown City

Donald E. Lazar, 47, of Brown City, died July 30, 2002.
He was born April 28, 1955, in Sandusky to George and Mazie (Fishell) Lazar.
He grew up in the North Branch area. He was employed as a custodian for Mott Community College. He enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his daughter, Christy (Steven) Martin of Gladwin; mother, Mazie of Brown City; sisters, Barbara (Terry) Sawgle of Lapeer, Debra (Mike) Jackson of North Branch and Delores (Jim) Dombrowski; and one brother, George (Marlene) Lazar of Lum.
He was preceded in death by his father, George; and sister, Velma Wilson.
Funeral services were Saturday (Aug. 3, 2002) at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home, North Branch.

Michael A. Ahrens
Died: Tuesday, July 30, 2002
Age: 49

Lapeer

Michael A. Ahrens, 49, of Lapeer since 1994 (formerly of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.), died July 30, 2002.
He was born Feb. 11, 1953, in Mount Clemens to Allen and Joann (Bonkowski) Ahrens. He married Claraetta "Torie" Young in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
He loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed Nascar Racing, having fun with the RV and hunting. He was a technologist for Ford Motor Co.
He is survived by his wife, Claraetta "Torie" Ahrens of Lapeer; children, Candice (fiancˇ, Joe Koeneman) Guinn of Commerce Township, Adam Ahrens of Lapeer, Melissa Ahrens of Flint, Shawna Ahrens of Lapeer, William Gilbert of Flint, Michael Gilbert of Flint; grandchildren, Alyssa and Michael, Christopher Gilbert and Michael Gilbert; parents, Allen and Joann Ahrens; godparents, Herschel and Janet Cebulski, Alvin Ahrens; sisters, Audrey (Ray) Barg of Richmond, Debbie (Al) VandenBussche of Chesterfield Township; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elsie Ahrens Sexton, Arthur Ahrens, William and Onita Bonkowski; father-in-law, Jimmie Young; and mother-in-law, Virginia Bell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
Funeral services were Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Marvin Ramthun officiated.

Daniel Wayne Williams
Died: Tuesday, July 30, 2002

Cass City

Daniel Wayne Williams, 49, of Cass City, died, Tuesday (July 30, 2002) peacefully in his home.
He was born July 3, 1953, in Flint, to Dallas and Ellen (Gerhardt) Williams. He married Doreen Creason in Silverwood on May 28, 1983.
He worked as a mason, retiring due to an industrial accident. He liked to travel and enjoyed rock collecting, fishing and woodworking.He enjoyed music and was a great joke teller. He enjoyed hanging out with buddies and playing pinochle.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen; daughter, Heather (Bill Hennesey) Stratton of Cass City; mother, Ellen Williams of Lapeer; brothers, David (Carol) Williams of Fostoria, Dwight (Terry) Williams of Lapeer and Dean (Toni) Williams of Frankenmuth; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and a nephew, David Myers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Funeral services were Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City. Debra L. Kranz officiated.

John Kovalchick
Died: Tuesday, July 30, 2002
Age: 76

North Branch

John Kovalchick, 76, of North Branch, died Tuesday (July 30, 2002) at Covenant Health Care Center, Saginaw.
He was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Flint to John and Helen Kovalchick. He married Beatrice Beard on Nov. 6, 1948, in Flint .
He served in the Navy and retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Branch, where he was a greeter and usher for his church, and a willing spirit to help in many of the church's ministries. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; daughter, Linda (Ronald) Loomis of North Branch; son, Gordon Kovalchick of North Branch; grandchildren, Krista (Raymond) Bates, Alicia Loomis, John Kovalchick and Gregory Kovalchick; sisters, Irene Dickie of Vernon and Mary Poczatek of Durand; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe; and sisters, Anna Sue and Ellen.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of North Branch.
Funeral services were Saturday (Aug. 3, 2002) at the First Baptist Church of North Branch. The Rev. Richard Whittenburg officiated. Burial was in Westlawn cemetery, North Branch, with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 457.

Myrtle I. Withey
Died: Monday, July 29, 2002
Age: 85

Columbiaville

Myrtle I. Withey, 85, of Columbiaville, died Monday (July 29, 2002) at home with her family.
She was born Nov. 14, 1916, in Royal Oak, to George and Sarah Stiff.
She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness, Lapeer Congregation for 45 years.
She is survived by her husband, LeRoy Withey Sr.; daughter, Sally (Tom) Shannon of Willette, Tenn.; son, LeRoy (Marilyn) Withey Jr. of Otisville; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one brother, Charles Stiff; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Wednesday (July 31, 2002) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. Cremation will take place.
A memorial service was Wednesday (July 31, 2002) at the Jehovah's Witness Lapeer Congregation, 2800 N. Lapeer Road, conducted by Berle Braurth.
Arrangements by Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer.

Hedwig Wardlaw
Died: Monday, July 29, 2002
Age: 83

Lapeer

Hedwig Wardlaw, 83, of Lapeer, died Monday (July 29, 2002).
She was born Oct. 13, 1918 in Jersey. She married Charles Wardlaw Sr. on Oct. 23, 1950, in Detroit.
She was a homemaker and also worked at VanDenBerg and Sons Vegetable Farm for about 10 years. Her children and grandchildren were her favorite hobby.
She is survived by her sons, Charles (Jeannie) Wardlaw of Fenton, Arthur (Diane) Wardlaw of Broomfield, Colo., and Samuel (Sherry) Wardlaw of Attica; daughters, Gwen (Ernest) Sittaro of Warren and Pamela (Vincent) McNish of Fostoria; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Stella Carconen of Lapeer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wardlaw Sr., in 1991.
Memorial contributions may be made to McLaren Hospice.
Funeral services were Wednesday (July 31, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. The Rev. Colin Stover officiated. Burial was in the Imlay Township cemetery, Imlay City.

Morris A. Rambow
Died: Sunday, July 28, 2002
Age: 75

Attica

Morris A. Rambow, 75, of Attica (formerly of Roseville), died Sunday (July 28, 2002).
He was born Sept. 23, 1926, in East Detroit to August and Charlotte (Johnson) Rambow. He married Florence Minor in Roseville on May 20, 1947.
He retired from the Lapeer Schools where he was a custodian for many years. He worked at Lapeer West High School, Lapeer East High School and most recently at Maple Grove Elementary.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Rambow of Attica; sons, Gary (Treva) Rambow of Lapeer, Mark (Julie) Rambow of Sears and Craig (Laura) Rambow of Lapeer; daughter, Carol Parshall of Sears; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one brother, Louis (Katherine) Rambow of Eastpointe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Todd Scott Rambow in 1991.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Cremation has already taken place.
