Clara Anna Engle

Clara Anna Engle, 90, of Imlay City, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Lapeer County Medical Care Facility after a short illness.
She was born on May 7, 1913, in Freeport, Ill., to Sidney John and Anna Johanna (Hildebrecht) Engle.
She was a graduate of the Class of 1934 at Imlay City High School. She received her nursing education degree at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids in 1937 and her master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit between 1953 and 1958. She was a missionary to Turkey from 1946-1956. She served in the Army Nursing Corp. during World War II in England and France, as well as on the Blanch F. Sigman Hospital Ship throughout the European Theater.
She had been employed by the State of Michigan until she officially retired. She was a nurse at the Lapeer State Hospital (Oakdale) and the Caro State Hospital; working with the mentally retarded. She was a member of Imlay City United Methodist Church, a former member of the Caro United Methodist Church, and worked with Lapeer Area Hospice for many years, well after her retirement.
She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Stamman of Capac and Doris (Henry) Ettema of Imlay City; brother, Harry Engle of Inverness, Fla.; god-children, Nadine Birney of Texas, Karen Becknell of Maryland, Jon Powell of California; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney John and Anna Engle; sister, Ethel Fardin; and brothers, Paul Engle and Earl Engle.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Imlay City United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday (Dec. 11) at Imlay City United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kevin Harbin will officiate. Burial will be in Imlay City Township cemetery in Imlay City.

Lapeer
Ronald Angle, 66, of Lapeer, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.
He was born March 3, 1937, in Lapeer to Frederick C. and Bessie (Cook) Angle.
He was a member of the Imlay City Fraternal Order of Eagles and also enjoyed fishing and playing euchre.
He is survived by his children, Debbie of California, Guy of Texas, Ripley of Texas, Tim of Brown City, Todd of Michigan, Gayne of Flint, Kelly of Fostoria, Andrea of Flint, Tracy of Michigan, Gary of Michigan, Terry, formerly of Michigan, Rhonda of North Branch, David of Lapeer and Brandi of Lapeer; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; siblings, F. M. “Mike” (Evalyn) Angle of Metamora, Marshall (Nancy) Angle Sr. of Deford, Thelma (Marlin) Judd of Attica and Janet (Duane) Sparks of Lapeer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Angle and Bessie Angle Watmuff; brother, Myron Angle; nephews, Chuck Machiela and Harley Bruce; and aunt, Thelma Graves.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Funeral services were Monday (Dec. 8) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Dawn Memorial cemetery.

Dorothy Eunice Rice

Hadley
Dorothy “Peggy” Eunice Rice, 88, of Hadley died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.
She was born March 15, 1915, in Flint, to Howard and Harriet (Graham) Riley. She married Lyle Rice in 1966.
She participated in the historic sit-down strike at Fisher Body Plant 1 and her name is included on the memorial at Region 1C. She worked for over 37 years at the Plant and was active in the United AutoWorkers Local 581 retiree group. She was a member of the Oak Park United Methodist Church in Flint. She and her husband enjoyed spending their winters in Miami for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle Rice of Hadley; and good friends, Tom and Norene Johnson of Hadley, Hazel Olson of Flint, Erma Gearhart of Mount Morris, and Cindi and Vic Bridges of Hadley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Harriet (Graham) Riley; and brother, John Stewart Riley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Funeral services were Saturday (Dec. 6) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Rich Geigert officiated. Burial was in Green Corners cemetery, Hadley.

Carol Nye

Green Valley, Ariz.
Carol “Fran” Nye, 83, of Green Valley, Ariz.(formerly of Lapeer), died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.
She was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Midland to Lester J. and Carol Frances (Chandler) Richards.
She graduated from Midland High School and attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in home economics and majoring in textiles. She worked in advertising at Arbaugh’s Department Store in Lansing and in the Research Chemistry Department of Dow Chemical Co. in Midland. In 1946, she married James F. Nye and moved to Pontiac. They built a house on Sylvan Lake. She helped plant several thousands of pine trees to reforest their family acreage at Waters. In 1970, they moved to Lapeer, where she was active at Grace Episcopal Church, P.E.O., Lapeer Art Association and Seven Ponds Nature Center. For many years during her retirement, she made maple syrup with her husband on their woodlot in Lapeer Township. In 2002, they built a house in Green Valley, Ariz., spending their winters there and summers at their cottage on Big Bradford Lake in Waters. Her interests ran from the artistic to the environment. In her younger years, she enjoyed horseback riding, canoeing, camping, sailing, snow skiing and traveling with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Carol (Mike) Gaydos of Cleveland, Ohio, and Susan (Bob) Madole of Clarkston; sons, James (Mary) Nye II of Howell and Richard (Sandy) Nye of Mansfield, Mass.; six granddaughters, two grandsons, one great-granddaughter and brother, Bruce Richards of Traverse City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester J. and Carol Frances (Chandler) Richards; and sister, Louise Wang.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Lapeer’s Chapter DX of P.E.O., or Karmanos Hospice.
Funeral services were Friday (Dec. 5) at Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer. The Revs. Steven Dewey and Canon Yung-Hsuan Chou officiated. Burial was in Perry Mount Park cemetery, Pontiac.

Ardis Augusta Schaaf

Ardis Augusta Schaaf, 81, of Davison, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich.
She was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Capac to Charles W. and Mable (Engel) Schutzler. She married Ralph O. Schaaf on Feb. 3, 1944, in Capac.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Schaaf of Davison; son, Charles Schaaf of Davison; daughters, Sharon (Larry) Kennel of Imlay City, Carol (Edwin) Bowman of Lapeer and Mary Knuth of Wisconsin; sister, Maxine (Floyd) Ferguson of Capac; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles W. and Mable (Engel) Schutzler.

Funeral services were Friday (Dec. 5) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home in Lapeer. The Revs. Joseph Bower and Jack Dowden officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery in Mayfield Township.

Walter John Feldbush

Walter John Feldbush, 84, of Fostoria, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at his home.
He was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Silverwood to Conrad and Sophia (Ruppel) Feldbush.
He grew up in the Fostoria and Silverwood area. He served in the Army. He retired from General Motors's Pontiac Division in 1976. He enjoyed gardening and doing yard work.
He is survived by his wife, Hattie; sons, John Feldbush and Tim Feldbush, both at home; sisters, Bertha Current of Owosso and Dorothy (Ray) Engel of Oxford; brothers, John Feldbush of Washington and Harold (Lois) Feldbush of Mount Clemens; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Sophia (Ruppel) Feldbush; four brothers and five sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Graveside services were Friday (Dec. 5) at Rich cemetery, Mayville. The Rev. Wayne Ferrigan officiated.

James Edward Stables

Livonia
James Stables, 87, of Livonia (formerly of Imlay City and Lapeer), died Nov. 30, 2003, at Camelot Nursing Home in Livonia after an extended illness.
He was born May 19, 1916, in Traverse City to James R. and Maude (Slocum) Stables. He married Helen Stafford in 1941 in Traverse City. She died March 27, 1947. He married Virginia Eleanor Ellison on Aug. 6, 1949, in Traverse City. She died Jan. 11, 2003.
He had been employed by the Michigan State Home of Lapeer as a custodian. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Almont.
He is survived by his sons, Herb Stables of Lum, Jim (Carol) Stables of Davison and Paul Stables of Warren; daughters, Janet (Peter) LaRose of Canton, Hazel Stables of Davison and Joyce Dzieminski of Milwaukee, Wis.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Stafford; second wife, Virginia Eleanor Ellison; infant daughter, Ruth Irene Stables; brother, William Stables; and sisters, Charlotte Baker, Violet Carey, Ruby Ranson Muriel Brock.
Funeral services were Friday (Dec. 5) at the Almont First Baptist Church, Almont. The Rev. James Byrd officiated. Burial was in Dawn Memorial cemetery, Elba Township.
