Lapeer

Eugene "Gene" Evans, 85, of Lapeer, died May 25, 2002.
He retired in 1974 after 30 years with General Motors. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and former member of Grace Episcopal Church. He enjoyed camping, hunting, trapping and even tying his own flies for fishing.
He is survived by his son, Larry (Louise) Evans of Lapeer; grandchildren, Lisa (Barry) Sutton, Ron (Sarah) Evans, Linda (David) Sprouse, Steven (Sarah) Shelton, Sandi (Alan) Webb, Karen (Rick) Burrell, Scott Shelton; 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 1991; parents, Frank and Grace (Stone) Evans; and a brother, Harold.
Memorial contributions may be made to Suncrest Auxiliary.
Funeral services wereWednesday (May 29, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Terry Euper officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Carl F. Fischer
Died: Friday, May 24, 2002
Age: 91

Lapeer

Carl F. Fischer, 91, of Lapeer, died May 24, 2002.
He was born Feb. 15, 1911 to the late Fred and Esther (Relitz) Fischer.He married Dawn in 1943.
He was employed as a truck driver in Ypsilanti and later at Kurth Bakery in Lapeer. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder, Board of Vestry member, on the building committee and the 125 anniversary committee. He also did much of the church landscaping.
He is survived by three nephews; step-grandchildren; and his special cousin, Viola Fischer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dawn; parents; two sisters, Leone Hagemeister and Marie Cize; and two step-daughters, Annette and Betty.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Landscaping Fund.
Funeral services were Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Marvin W. Ramthun officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Chereen Antonette Chesnutt
Died: Friday, May 24, 2002
Age: 64

Attica

Chereen Antonette Chesnutt, 64, of Attica, died May 24, 2002 at her home.
She was born Sept. 28, 1937 in Detroit. She married David Marshall Chesnutt in East Detroit on Sept. 7, 1957.
She had been employed as a sales clerk at Sears in Sterling Heights and Caro as well as the 3-D store in Lapeer. She was also a realtor and worked for a couple different real estate offices in the Lapeer area.
She is survived by her husband, David of Attica; daughters, Laurie (Barney) Smith of Clyde, Ohio, and Dianne (Michael) McClelland of Lapeer; sons, Todd Chesnutt of North Branch and Larry Chesnutt of Lapeer; grandchildren, Amy Norman, Frank Osborn, Andrew Osborn, Eric Smith, Michael McClelland, Michelle McClelland, Kristin McClelland, Nicole Chesnutt and Adam Chesnutt; great-grandchildren, Jacob, David, Alexander, Jared, Mercedes and Trenton; and three brothers, Melvin (Gayle) Kuhlman of Auburn Heights, John Kuhlman of Ocala, Fla., and Edward Kuhlman of Southfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Eleanor Kuhlman; and a brother, Fred Kuhlman.
Funeral services were Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. The Rev. Paul Parker of the Free Methodist Church of Lapeer officiated. Burial was in the Attica Township cemetery, Attica.

James C. Crego
Died: Thursday, May 23, 2002
Age: 55

Lapeer

James C. Crego, 55, of Lapeer (formerly of Imlay City), died May 23, 2002.
He was born March 1, 1947, in Detroit, to Ralph and Letha (Payne) Crego. He married Rose Mary Wilder on Aug. 29, 1970.
He graduated in 1966 from Imlay City High School. He owned and operated Art's Appliance for many years. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Moose Lodge in Lapeer. He especially enjoyed golfing, hunting and deep-sea fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Crego of Lapeer; daughter, Sherry Crego of Flint; mother, Letha Crego of Davison; and sister, Janice (Timothy) McRae of Flushing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Crego.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lapeer Elks Club.
Cremation has taken place.

Mary Kathleen Sweeney
Died: Thursday, May 23, 2002
Age: 89

Metamora

Mary Kathleen Sweeney, 89, of Metamora, died Thursday (May 23, 2002).
She was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Flint, to John and Edna (Nadeau) Boegner. She married James Thomas Sweeney, Sr. in Flint on June 1, 1929.
She was a homemaker. She was a baker at the Sweeney Bakery for 30 years, retiring in the 1970s. She helped with the farming, with chickens and thrashing. She was a horse racing fan and listened to all the Detroit Tiger games. She mostly enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Edna Mae (Walter) Sierakowski of Metamora, Thresa Brady of Gaines, James "Tom" (Phyllis) Sweeney Jr., of Metamora, Patrick (Barbara) Sweeney of Metamora, and Mary (Paul) Butzier Sweeney of Metamora; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Sweeney Sr. in 1993; a daughter, Barbara Pack in 1961; three infant children; a grandson, James T. Sweeney in 2002; two brothers, Allen Boegner, John "Bud" Boegner; and a sister, Jean.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mass cards or McLaren Hospice.
Funeral services were Saturday (May 25, 2002) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Janusz Iwan officiated. Burial was in Green Corners cemetery, Hadley.

Edwin J. Stark
Died: Thursday, May 23, 2002
Age: 75

Cadillac

Edwin J. Stark, Sr., 75, of Cadillac, died Thursday (May 23, 2002) at his home.
He was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Mapleton, to Emil and Dorothea (Taglauer) Stark. He married Wanda M. Schultz on March 1, 1950 in Saginaw.
He graduated from Saginaw High School and lived most of his life in the Saginaw and Lapeer areas until moving to Cadillac in 1999. He was employed at Saginaw Foundries in Saginaw and Bostwick Foundry in Lapeer. He was a coin collector and enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda M. Stark of Cadillac; son, Edwin J. Stark Jr. of Cadillac; grandson, Josh Stark of Cadillac; and a brother, Lawrence (Joyce) Stark of Gladwin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary Lee Stark; and a brother, Emil Stark.
Funeral services were Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at the Peterson Funeral Home, Cadillac. The Rev. William Hirschfeld officiated. Burial was in Mount Olivet cemetery, Saginaw.

Willis Hudson

Willis Hudson, 67, of Fostoria, died Thursday (May 23, 2002) at his home.
He was born April 23, 1935, in Columbiaville, to Willis and Helen (Spanke) Hudson. He married Venita Barnes on Feb. 11, 1956 at the Flint Baptist Temple in Flint .
He grew up in Lapeer County and graduated from North Branch High School in 1953. He retired in 1989 from General Motors after 34 years of service.He was a sergeant for the Michigan National Guard and he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Venita; daughters, Denise (Richard) Snyder of Columbiaville, Helen (Wade) Whitaker of North Carolina, Carol (Tim) McQueen of Lapeer, Rebecca (Tony) Warden of Virginia, and Lee Ann (Ben) Kelly of Lapeer; sons, Willis Jr. (Elizabeth) of New Mexico, James (Carrie) of Davison, and Robert (fiancee, April) of Fostoria; 19 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Ann (George) Marlow of Alpena; two brothers, John (Rose) of Cumins and Phillip (Candace) of Caro; his wife's parents, Harry and Rose Barnes of Flint; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Helen Hudson; and one sister, Susan June.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marlette United Hospice Service.
Funeral services were Tuesday (May 28, 2002) at Fostoria Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Wall officiated. Burial was in West Deerfield cemetery, Fostoria.

Joyce McInally
Died: Wednesday, May 22, 2002
Age: 77

Lapeer

Joyce McInally, 77, of Lapeer, died May 22, 2002.
She was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Pontiac, to Kenneth and Bernice (Moses) Michael. She married William McInally.
She was the bookkeeper at McInally Electric for over 22 years, retiring in 1987. She had helped with the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts. She made 28 vests for the Girl Scouts to wear for a special occasion. She enjoyed sewing, reading and especially computers.
She is survived by her children, Terry (Laurie) McInally of North Branch, Larry (Fran) McInally of Columbiaville, and Jill (Mike) Arms of Lapeer; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William McInally in 1992; her parents; and asister, Judy.
Funeral services were Saturday (May 25, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery.
Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
