Ricky Lee Emert, 49, of Lapeer, died Saturday (April 13, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
He was born May 6, 1952, in Pontiac, to the late Joseph and Phyllis (Overcashier) Emert.
He is survived by his loving family; son, Eric (Angela) and grandson, Chance; son, Jody (Marie); mother, Phyllis Emert; sister, JoAnn (Gary) Harley; brothers, Robert (Christina) and Richard (Michelle); many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Wanda Landrum and Kay White.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Thursday (April 18, 2002) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Peter DeKlerk will officiate.

Lisa Ann Cook, 38, of Caro, died Tuesday (April 9, 2002) at her home.
She was born July 25, 1963, in Flint.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her mother, Vera Neph of Sandusky; sons, Carl Sparks, Earl Sparks, David Sparks and John Sparks, all of Caro; daughters, Lacey Cook of Marlette and Rebecca Sparks of Sandusky; brothers, Tom Phillips of Chicago and Dan Phillips of Missouri; and sisters, Teresa (Mark) Hershberger of Columbiaville and Vera Phillips of Sandusky.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Funeral services were Saturday (April 13, 2002) at the Columbiaville Chapel of Jansen Family Funeral Home. Burial was in Meadowlawn cemetery.

Helen M. Swayze

North Branch
Helen M. Swayze, 94, of North Branch, died Monday (April 8, 2002) at Ferguson Convalescent Home.
She was born Aug. 12, 1907, in North Branch, to Irwin and Tillie (Goff) Swayze.
She was a homemaker and lived on the Swayze farm in North Branch. She loved tending to her flowers and cats. She enjoyed crocheting, was an avid reader and had a special talent for quilting.
She is survived by special friends, Bernie and Mary Kohler, Rita Schlaud, Pam and Les Frampton, Mark, Andy, Chris and Doug Schlaud, Lorraine Martin, all of North Branch; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Carrie; and brother, Charles.
Funeral services were Wednesday (April 10, 2002) at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home. The Rev. Walter David officiated. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery.

Elisabeth Louise Miller

Sault St. Marie
Elisabeth Louise Miller of Sault St. Marie (formerly of Lake Orion), died Monday (April 8, 2002).
She attended Lapeer County Normal and graduated from Dryden High School, Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University. She taught 40 years in the public school system. She started teaching in rural schoolhouses in Lapeer and Oakland counties and the greater part of her career was spent teaching in Hazel Park. She resided most of her life in Lake Orion before moving to the Sault Ste. Marie area in 1977. She traveled through Latin America during her summers while teaching and then more extensively after her retirement. She also traveled throughout the United States and Canada. She enjoyed camping and fishing, going on archeological digs, sewing, knitting, photography and golf. She was well read with a wide variety of interests.
She is survived by her sisters, Florence Soddard and Pricilla (Joseph) Verhaeghe, both of Sault Ste. Marie; sisters-in-law, Ethel of Barbeau, Mich. and Laura of Dryden; close companion, Shirley (Marvin) McDowell of Sault Ste. Marie; niece, Susan Verhaeghe, of the Sault Ste. Marie; also numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances R. Ovaitt; brothers, George W., M. Eugene, John Russell and Frederic D.; sisters-in-law, Helen Zelzic, Frances T. and Hilda G.; and brothers-in-laws, Cameron Stoddard and George Ovaitt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
Cremation has taken place. A Christian memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the family plot at Dryden Center cemetery.

Leonard McArthur

Leonard Mac McArthur, 78, of Lapeer (grew up in the Pontiac area), died Monday (April 8, 2002).
He was born March 30, 1924, in Pontiac, to Leonard and Vernese McArthur.
Her served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was an active member of Lapeer American Legion Post 16. He retired from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, after working there many years, in the Flint warehouse.
He is survived by his son, Bruce (JoMarie) McArthur of Lapeer; grandchildren, Christopher McArthur, Jessica McArthur and Eric McArthur; special friend, Marcie Denton of Lapeer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Vernese McArthur, and five infant siblings.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Suncrest Auxiliary or the American Legion Post 16 of Lapeer.
Visitation was Wednesday (April 10, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (April 11, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Peter DeKlerk will officiate. Burial will be in Stiles cemetery in Mayfield Township under the auspices of the Lapeer American Post 16 Honor Guard.

W. John Carney

W. John Carney, 25, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died April 7, 2002.
He was born Oct. 20, 1976, in Erie, to Timothy P. and Carol McLaughlin Carney of Lapeer.
He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in political science and economics. He was a third-year law student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, due to graduate on May 25, 2002. He volunteered in mentoring programs at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Rehabilitation Center and Children's Institute and Marion County Superior Court and also was involved with the University of Michigan's Volunteer Services Program. He assisted with fundraising at the North Oakland County YMCA. He instructed college professors at a seminar on implementing the World Wide Web into their course materials, for the Greater Flint Education Consortium of Baker College. He was presently working on legal and business research and drafting for Rhizome.org, a non-profit Internet "net art" company, as an independent study. At his memorial service his parents were presented with his diploma for his Juris Doctorate degree.
He is survived by his parents, Timothy and Carol McLaughlin Carney; brothers, Joshua, Brian and Daniel of Lapeer; grandparents, Paul and Betty McLaughlin of Harbor Creek Township; grandmother, Jane Carney of Erie; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William John Carney.
A special memorial service was held April 19 at the University of Pittsburgh Law School. Burial was in Wintergreen Gorge cemetery.
Susan (McDowell) Sollman

Susan (McDowell) Sollman, 52, of Columbiaville, died Sunday (April 7, 2002).
She was born Nov. 28, 1949, in Lapeer, to James and Velma (Farrington) McDowell. She married Vern Sollman on May 24, 1975, in Lapeer.
She was a loving wife, mother and daughter. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Lapeer and worked over 15 years as the bookkeeper for Reed's Appliance.
She is survived by her husband, Vern; daughter, Jennifer Sollman of Columbiaville; mother, Velma Apsey of Columbiaville; father and mother-in-law, Douglas and Jennie Sollman of Imlay City; brother, James (Doris) McDowell of North Branch; sister, Julie Acre of Attica; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, James McDowell; stepfather, Richard Apsey; and her grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to Genesys Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation was Wednesday (April 10, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday (April 11, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Paul Parker will officiate. Burial will be in thr Arcadia Township cemetery, Lum.

Andre H. Callens

Columbiaville
Andre H. Callens, 87, of Columbiaville (formerly of Rochester), died Sunday (April 7, 2002).
He was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Belgium, to Hector and Marie (Deceunink) Callens. He married Dorothy Reta Gourlie on Aug. 26, 1939.
He lived in the Columbiaville area for 27 years. He taught literacy classes in Columbiaville and sat for Hospice.
He is survived by his children, Judith Ann (Doyce) Scott of Lake Orion, Susan Marie (Victor) Cencich of Oakland, Therese Rita (Jeff) Davis of Bartlett, Ill., Pauline Jean of Clinton Township; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and siblings, Germaine (Anthony) Studenka of Lincoln Park, Marletta (George) Fodell of St. Clair Shores, Agnes Zella of Orlando, Fla.
Burial was in Mount Avon cemetery, Rochester.
