Virginia Helen Hirschfield
Grosse Pointe Woods resident Virginia Helen Hirschfield, 77, passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003.
Born in 1925 in Detroit, Mrs. Hirschfield attended Detroit High School of Commerce.
She was a member of St. Catherine's parish and was active in various youth organizations.
She was employed at Detroit Bank & Trust prior to marrying her husband, with whom she raised a large family.
The Hirschfields moved to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1962.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Altar Society and the Women's Association at St. Clair River Country Club.
Mrs. Hirschfield was an avid golfer and dedicated to her family.
She is survived by her husband, Sidney Joseph Hirschfield; her six children, Charles (Susan), Thomas (Kathleen), Patricia (John) Wenzel, James, Ann (Mark) Dion and John (Stephanie); and eight grandchildren, Matthew, Jaclyn, Ann, David, Andrew, Laura, TJ and Teddy.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Monday, Feb. 10, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Arrangements were made by A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Toni Stewart
Former Grosse Pointe Park resident Toni "Eileen" Stewart, 71, passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 in Ann Arbor.
Before retiring to Austin, Texas in 1997, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart were active in the Grosse Pointe community.
They owned the accounting firm, Stewart & Co. and Mrs. Stewart volunteered for many years with the Assistance League to the Northeast Guidance Center, serving as president in 1990.
She also devoted much of her time to working with the NEGC itself.
While in Austin, Mrs. Stewart volunteered at St. David's Hospital and was employed for the last three years at Parmer Woods Assisted Living Facility.
She is survived by four children; four step-children; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her father; two brothers; and one sister.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack "John" Stewart; her mother; and one sister.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Michigan, and a tree will be planted in Mrs. Stewart's honor in Austin, Texas.

Dorothea G. Vermeulen
Grosse Pointe Shores resident Dorothea G. Vermeulen, 96, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003.
Born in 1906 in Detroit, Mrs. Vermeulen was a former president of Alliance Francaise, a former president of Grosse Pointe Lawyers Wives, a past treasurer of Young Woman's Home Association of Detroit, and an active member of the Grosse Pointe Symphony.
She is survived by her daughters, Joan Vermeulen and Nancy Vermeulen; and her grandson, Benjamin Block.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony A. Vermeulen.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at St. Columba Episcopal Church in Detroit.
Interment is in Mount Olivet cemetery in Detroit.

Marjorie L. Willoughby
Longtime Grosse Pointe Woods resident Marjorie L. Willoughby, 79, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac.
Born in Kalamazoo in 1923, Mrs. Willoughby was an active member at the Redeemer United Methodist Church in Harper Woods, where she volunteered her time in the thrift shop.
She retired from her career as a bookkeeper for an automobile dealership, and enjoyed camping, biking, being in the sun, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Lynn (Terry) Hahn, Michael (Beth) Willoughby, Ann Anselm and Sara (Bob) Manney; her son-in-law, David Anderson; her daughter-in-law, Doreen Hagen; her 13 grandchildren, Chris (Jill) Hahn, Michele (Chris) Minne, Cameron, Daniel, Sara and Christen Willoughby, Irvin Anderson, Kristie Hagen, Katie Anselm, Holly (Ray) and Kyle Urech and Erin and Joe Manney; six great-grandchildren, Allexis, Michael, Nicholas, Taylor, Jeffrey and Nathaniel; and her sisters, Evelyn Gibson and Betty (Howard) VanDis.
She was predeceased by her son, Charlie Willoughby; her daughter, Martha Anderson; and her grandson, Andrew Anderson.
A memorial service was held on Friday, Feb. 7, at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak.

Helen McDonald Zaun
Former Grosse Pointe Park resident Helen McDonald Zaun, 77, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 in Gainesville, Fla.
Born in 1915 in Portland, Maine, Mrs. Zaun graduated from Florida State University.
She was a Navy wife during World War II, while her husband served as Chaplain both at the U.S.Naval Academy, and on the USS Hornet.
From 1946 to 1980, she resided in Grosse Pointe Park, raising her family, participating in the community and serving as a minister's wife at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church for 34 years.
She and Dr. Zaun retired to Gainesville, Fla., in 1980, but have stayed connected to Grosse Pointe through their family and many friends.
Mrs. Zaun participated in volunteer work as an honorary member of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. She received a certificate of service for Recording for the Blind Inc. and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the International Rotary Club.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Allan A. Zaun; her daughters, Patricia Kane of Grosse Pointe Park, Victoria Colwell of St. Clair Shores and Andrea Balcerski of Detroit; her grandchildren, Christopher Wallace, Jennifer Wallace, William Colwell and Jonathan Colwell; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marion McDonald Devine.
A memorial service will be held during worship on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in Indian Village.

Betty Virginia Charles
Betty Virginia Charles, 84, died of natural causes at her Detroit home on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002.
Born in Chicago, Mrs. Charles lived in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, before moving to Detroit. She was a longtime waitress in the restaurant of Hudson's downtown Detroit store.
Mrs. Charles enjoyed fishing and visiting Chicago.
She is survived by her many friends and family members. She was predeceased by her husbands Clarence Donnelly and Generosa Charles.
Mrs. Charles will be included in the intentions during a Mass on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m., at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 6021 Whittier in Detroit. Mrs. Charles was cremated and her ashes are interred in the St. Theresa section of Heavenly Rest cemetery in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Toby David
Toby David, 59, died on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, in Mesa, Ariz.
Those who knew Toby, and in particular those who encountered him during his three-and-a-half year battle with cancer, found his optimism, sense of humor and unfailing determination to be a source of inspiration.
Toby taught for 18 years at University-Liggett School in Grosse Pointe and 15 years at the Gilman School in Baltimore, Md., where he touched an uncountable number of young lives with his unique approach to mathematics, his love of coaching, his gregarious laugh and his gentle yet firm personality.
Toby earned his B.S. and Masters in Education from Wayne State University in Detroit.
He will be greatly missed by his two sons, Brian and Eric; his sister Theresa (Mike) Livingston; his brothers Gerry (Susan) David and Ron (Cari) David and his nephews Mark, Greg, Chris, Tom and Toby Robert. He will also be missed by his former wife Marlene David.
A small Catholic service was held in Mesa, Ariz., on Feb. 9. A memorial service will be held at the Gilman School in Baltimore, Md. on Feb. 18, at 4 p.m.
