Zigmond J. Piorkowski

Burton

Zigmond J. "Ziggy" Piorkowski, 70, of Burton, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) at Hurley Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Lapeer, to Stanley and Sophia (Yorkowski) Piorkowski. He married Norma "Joanne" Taylor on May 17, 1952, in Flint.
He was employed by AC Spark Plug for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church where he served as lector. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4090 for 15 years. He was currently a trustee for Councils 4090 and 0523 and served as the Past Faithful Navigator and was a member of the Honor Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; son, Steven (Karen) of Burton; daughter, Rhonda (Brian) Coulter of Burton; grandchildren, Keeley, Crystal and Steven II Piorkowski, Bronya and Nick Eshoo, Carson Coulter; great-grandson, Zackary Zapata; sisters, Jenny Miller of Davison and Genevieve (James) Carpenter of Millington; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vincent and Johnny; and four sisters, Stella Boots, Lottie Cook, Irene Rowden and Lillian Turcsak.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday (March 20, 2002) at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison. The Rev. Leroy White officiated. Burial was in St. John Catholic cemetery.

William LaVern Hamlin
Died: Saturday, March 16, 2002
Age: 85

Brown City

William LaVern Hamlin, 85, of Brown City, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) at Marlette Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 24, 1917, in North Branch, to William M. and Theresa M. (Hoffman) Hamlin.
He lived most of his life in the Brown City area. He was employed by General Motors and also worked as a farmer.
He is survived by his sisters, Leona Martin of Flint, Madonna Hamlin of Flint, Mary Spencer of Imlay City; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Theresa Hamlin; five brothers, Merritt Hamlin, Fenton Hamlin, Mark Hamlin, Eloy Hamlin and Bernard Hamlin; and two sisters, Lucille Turner and Alvinah Klug.
Funeral services were Wednesday (March 20, 2002) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in North Branch. The Rev. Lawrence Dunn officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery, North Branch.
Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City.

Donald R. Barber
Died: Saturday, March 16, 2002
Age: 87

Lapeer

Donald R. Barber, 87, of Lapeer (formerly of Hadley), died Saturday (March 16, 2002).
He was born May 5, 1914, in Hadley, to Floyd and Nellie (Burr) Barber. He married Iva Mae Wagner in Davison on Nov. 9, 1940.
Heserved his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Pontiac Motors for 35 years, retiring in 1973. He was a baseball fan and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Iva Barber of Lapeer; children, Sheila (John) Rensberger of Oak Brook Terrace, Ill., Randy (Barbara) Barber of North Branch, Kristine (Jeffrey) Goldblatt of Lansing; grandchildren, Randy, Elizabeth, Jemery, Jennifer, Jessica, Kelley; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Tabitha; sister, Aletha Morse of Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to Genesys Hospice Center.
Funeral services were Tuesday (March 19, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. James Sheldrake officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery in Mayfield Township.

Ralph P. Ptak
Died: Friday, March 15, 2002
Age: 74

Columbiaville

Ralph P. Ptak, 74, of Columbiaville, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 16, 1927, in Josephine, Pa., to the late John and Rose (Bodenski) Ptak. He married Virginia Mahanski in Colver, Pa. in 1948.
He retired from the water department of the City of Lincoln Park. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, radio-controlled planes and, most of all, spending time with his grandsons. He served honorably in the U.S. Marines in Korea and as a member of the Lapeer American Legion Post 16.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia of Columbiaville; daughter, Debbie (David) Mendryga of Columbiaville; grandsons, Matthew, James and Paul; brother, Walter of Pennsylvania; and special companion, Rascal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charlie; and sister, Vernie Molitoris.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family or the American Diabetes Association.
Mass of Christian burial was Monday (March 18, 2002) at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Otisville. The Rev. Leroy White officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.

Hazel L. Stroup
Died: Thursday, March 14, 2002
Age: 88

Lapeer

Hazel L. (Alt) Stroup, 88, of Lapeer, died Thursday (March 14, 2002).
She was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Lapeer, to Anthony and Grace Finch. She married Glenn Ray Stroup in Lapeer on Sept. 16, 1937.
She was a member of the Country Christian Church and attended as long as her health permitted. During her lifetime, she had worked at Lapeer Fabricators, Lapeer Co. General Hospital, Suncrest Medical Care Facility and Clara Barton Nursing Home. She loved her puppies. She was loved so much by her family and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Beulah Pluff; sisters-in-law, Neva Coulter of Lapeer and Sandy Stroup of Florida; special nieces and care givers, Janet Gould and Shirley Klauka; many nieces and nephews; extended family; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn in 1990; brothers, Edward Alt in 1937, and Ralph Alt in 1978; and sisters, Lula Glassford in 1995 and Esther Luretta Woods in 2002.
Funeral services were Monday (March 18, 2002) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. Roger Keur officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery in Mayfield Township.

Hassie M. Richmond
Died: Thursday, March 14, 2002
Age: 81

Lapeer

Hassie M. Richmond, 81, of Lapeer, died March 14, 2002 at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 30, 1920 in Milan, Tenn. She married Odell Richmond in Arkansas on March 21, 1938.
Together they shared 60 years of marriage before his death in 1998. She was a member of the Bearanger Church since 1964.
She is survived by her children, Howard (Janet) of Attica, Paul (Carol) of Mount Morris, David (Kathleen) of Mayville, Gary (Teena) of Brown City, Thomas of North Branch and Jack (Linda) of Columbiaville, Vicki (Larry) Johnston of Scottsdale, Ariz., Susan (Doyle) Warner of East Jordan, Char (Troy) Richardson of Davison and Kim Lesiewicz of Lapeer; 35 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and step-sisters, Frances House, Loraine Shelton and Pauline Lindsay.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell; children, Kelly and Ricky; great-grandson, Caleb; 15 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were Monday (March 18, 2002) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Timothy Butterfield officiated. Burial was in Flint Memorial Park cemetery, Flint. The Rev. Edward Gates officiated.

Rena G. Sexton
Died: Thursday, March 14, 2002
Age: 89

Lapeer

Rena G. Sexton, 89, of Lapeer (formerly of Kuttawa, Ky.), died Thursday (March 14, 2002).
She was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Kuttawa, Ky., to William and Nannie (East) McQuigg. She married Gordon L. Sexton in Kuttawa, Ky., on May 10, 1930.
She attended Calvary Bible Church when she was able. She was an avid reader, enjoyed bird watching, shopping and loved her late dog, Buttons. She had a wonderful character, a good sense of humor, very optimistic, understanding, she was very easy to talk to with a calming wisdom. She was very involved with her grandchildren's upbringing, living across the street from them. The family says they don't make grandmothers like her, she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her sons, Russell (Pat) Sexton of Louisville, Ky., Ronald (Mary) Sexton of Las Vegas, Nev., Jerry (Carrie) Sexton of Catlettsburg, Ky.; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; dear lifelong friend, Helen Nettle of Lapeer; brother, Douglas (Virginia) McQuigg of Kuttawa, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Sexton; son, James Sexton in 1997; infant son, Robert Sexton; granddaughter, Patty Neal; and three brothers, J.B. McQuigg, Clifton McQuigg in 1998, and Wilburn McQuigg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service and burial will take place in Kentucky in the near future.

Donald P. Lawrence
Died: Wednesday, March 13, 2002
Age: 76

Columbiaville

Donald P. Lawrence, 76, of Columbiaville, died March 13, 2002.
He was born July 16, 1925, in Flint, to Elmer and Mabel (Ketchum) Lawrence. He later married Margaret Kennedy in North Branch in 1947.
He died after battling cancer. He retired from Fisher Body in 1982 and enjoyed gardening and working on lawn mowers. He also enjoyed attending the Elba Jamboree and spending time with his family up north at the cabin. He was a member of UAW Local1292. He was honorably discharged after serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Nashville during World War II.
He is survived by his sons, Donald (Patricia) of Barrington, Robert (Jane) of Minnesota; daughters, Jude (Dale) Case of Columbiaville, Suzan (Rick) Lawrence-Bower of Columbiaville, Marquerite (George) Chizmadia of Columbiaville; sister, Imogene Gerwolds of Columbiaville; grandchildren, Roberta (Jim), Debbie (Rustie), Mike, Maggie, Donnie, Katie, Joe; and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and J-Boy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; one brother, Everett; and his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's or National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Funeral services were Saturday (March 16, 2002) at the Columbiaville Chapel of Jansen Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald Lerche officiated. Burial was in Deerfield Township cemetery.
