William D. Van Dusen, 92, of Southern Pines, N.C., died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Penick Village, Southern Pines, N.C.

Bill was a graduate of Dartmouth College. He served for many years on boards of the hospital, bank, school, church, Red Cross and Cancer Society in the Lapeer area. He was also a member of the Tin Whistles in Pinehurst.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; son, Charles (Sally) of Michigan; daughters, Julie (Don) Gardner, Harriet Daigle of Colorado and Elizabeth (Dexter) Bucklin of New Hampshire; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Penick Village, P.O. Box 2001, Southern Pines, N.C., 28388.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Southern Pines, N.C.

Robert Richardson
Died: Saturday, September 29, 2001
Age: 78

Lapeer

Robert Bob Richardson, 78, of Lapeer, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001).

He was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Belding, MI, to William and Emma (Rassmussen) Richardson. He married Lucile Lucy Platt on February 15, 1947.

Mr. Richardson served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. He worked in final motor repair for Buick Motors for almost 40 years, retiring in 1987. Bob was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his children, Robert Jr. (Janene) of Pinckney, Judith (Tom) Dalgleish of Lapeer, Thomas (Colleen), William (Walt Kroupa) of Elk Rapids; 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile Lucy on Feb. 21, 2001; twin daughters, Peggy and Patty; parents; siblings, Dorothy and Arvon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Lapeer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Terry Euper officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery, Lapeer.

Rose Mary Budzyn
Died: Saturday, September 29, 2001
Age: 85

Almont

Rose Mary Budzyn, 85, of Almont, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Port Huron Hospital.

She was born Jan. 9, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio. She married John A. Budzyn in Detroit on Jan. 22, 1940.

She was a home maker. She was a member of St. Kieran Catholic Church, Utica.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Anne Hansen of Almont, Dolores (Bruce) Natzel of Rochester Hills; son, John Joseph (Gloria) of Richmond; 8 grandchildren, Robert, Franklin, Vicki Brady, Troy Hansen, Tammy Hudson, Tuesday Queener, Rosemary Haacke and Bruce Natzel II; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Stella Florek of Royal Oak; brothers, John Cackowski of Florida, Frank Cackowski of Detroit and Anthony Cackowski of Detroit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Aloyius Budzyn; sister, Mary Shurgot; grandson, Tully John Hansen and Kristen Hansen; 3 great-grandchildren, Joshua Haacke, Kristen Hensen and Kevin Queener.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) at St. Kieran Catholic Church, Utica. Entombment was in Resurrection cemetery, Clinton Twp.

Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City.

Laura Smith
Died: Friday, September 28, 2001
Age: 65

Clifford

Laura Smith, 65, of Clifford, died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Tawas City, to Russell and Helen (Ulman) Featheringill. She married Allen Smith in Lum on May 10, 1957.

Laura grew up in Lapeer County and attended the Lapeer School District. She retired from Oakdale State Hospital. Laura Attended Silverwood United Methodist Church and Clifford TOPS Club. She enjoyed traveling, reading and crocheting.

She is survived by her sons, Rick (Julie) Toole of Attica, Terry of California, Dennis of Clifford; daughter, Denise (Pete) Phillips of Columbiaville; grandchildren, Jessica and Joshua Toole, Krystal and Terri Phillips, Caitlyn and Jeannine Walter; sisters, Wanda (Fred) Sontag of Clifford, Betty (Harold) Woolard of Lapeer and Iva (Roy) Choate of Florida; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allen Smith; son, James Allen; brother, Merlin Featheringill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Silverwood United Methodist Church or charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home. Rev. Ronald Hutchinson will officiate. Burial will be in West Deerfield cemetery.

Larry W. Powell
Died: Friday, September 28, 2001
Age: 66

Dryden

The Rev. Larry W. Powell, 66, of Dryden (formerly of Chicago and Lapeer), died Friday (Sept. 28, 2001).

He was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Pontiac, to Lawrence and Myrtle (Kilgore) Planz. He married Alice Greene at the Washington Baptist Church, Washington, MI. on July 2, 1954.

Shortly after graduation from Romeo High School in 1952, Larry married his high school sweet-heart, Alice. They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on July 2, 2001. Larry received Christ as his personal savior in October of 1950. He attended college at Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College. Larry has pastored for a total of 42 years. He pastored 7 years at Keeneyville Bible Church in Roselle, Ill., 8 years at Hunters Creek Community Church in Lapeer and 26 years at the Midwest Bible Church in Chicago, Ill., where health problems forced him to retire in August 2000. Larry went to be with the Lord on Friday (Sept. 28, 2001).

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Dryden; son, Tim (Sandy) of Millington; daughters, Tammy (Ron) Koval of Aurora, Ill. and Trudy (Don) Nettnin of Lake Villa, Ill.; grandchildren, Matthew and Mike, Marie (Mike) Kler, Jessica, Andrew, Kevin and Michelle Koval and Ashley and Dustin Nettnin; great-grandsons, Jonathon and Joshua Kler; brother, Don (Joanne) of Almont.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Planz; step-father, Jack Powell; his mother, Myrtle Powell and his son Todd.

Memorial contributions may be made to V2K New Building Program at the Midwest Bible Church, Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services were held Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) at Hunters Creek Community Church, Lapeer. Pastor Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial was in Perry Mt. Park, Pontiac.

Evelyn Mae Laxton
Died: Thursday, September 27, 2001
Age: 69

Lapeer

Evelyn Mae Laxton, 69, of Lapeer (formerly of Lenoir, N.C.), died Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001).

She was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Lum, to Lorenzo and Mabel (Graham) Mathews. She married Conrad Laxton.

Mrs. Laxton was a housewife, baby-sitter and seamstress. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Lenoir.

She is survived by her sons, Gary Bailey of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Jerry Bailey of Ft. Myers, Fla.; brothers, Layton Mathews of Lapeer and Howard Mathews of Lapeer; sisters, Donna Harvey of Lapeer, Sharon Stone of Lapeer and Barbara Heusted of Lapeer; one grandson and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad; parents and one daughter.

Memorials contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 1444 Norwood St. Lenoir, N.C., 28645.

Funeral services were held Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at Central Baptist Church, Lenoir, N.C. Rev. John Jernigan officiated. Burial was in Wildwood cemetery.

Helen M. Greanya
Died: Thursday, September 27, 2001
Age: 87

Bay City

Helen M. Greanya, 87, of Bay City (formerly of Lapeer), died Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) at the Carriage House in Bay City.

She was born Nov. 10, 1913, in Searights, Pa., to Andrew and Helen (Zehel) Pavlak.

Helen worked as a nurse at the Cleveland Clinic, the Hawaiian Islands, where she was present during the attack on Pearl Harbor and WWII. She worked at Hurley Hospital and Walter Winchester, where she was the Director of Nursing. She worked at Flint General Hospital, where she was Director of Nursing. She also worked at the Lapeer County General Hospital and retired from the Native Hospital of Alaska. Helen enjoyed stained glass art and traveling.

She is survived by her son, Benjamin Blissett of Auburn; daughter, Annie Laurie (George) Tucker of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Rob, Michael and Casey Blissett, Jennifer Janetzke, Robert Tucker and Katherine Tucker; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Janetzke.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated in her honor at 9 a.m., Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer. Father Janusz Iwan officiated. Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Raymond Smoke
Died: Wednesday, September 26, 2001
Age: 95

Lapeer

Raymond Smoke, 95, of Lapeer (formerly of North Branch), died Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2001).

He was born April 22, 1906, in Stoneborough, Penn., to Arthur and Edna (Jones) Smoke. He married Eva Monroe.

Mr. Smoke was a truck driver for the North Branch Elevator for 35 years. He was also a bus driver. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church in North Branch for many years as well as Lapeer. He walked many miles for exercise on Baldwin Rd. Raymond enjoyed fishing and he also was a hunter for rabbit, pheasant and deer. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children, Helen (Dean) Kitchenmaster of Perry, John (Jeanie) of Springhill, Tenn., Rosemarie (Ed) Kazenko of Florida; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Arnold Bracy officiated. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery, North Branch.
