Zwier "Sam" Vlieg
Died: Thursday, August 16, 2001

Marlette

Zwier Sam Vlieg, 85, of Marlette, died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Marlette Extended Care Facility.

He was born April 5, 1916, in Kalamazoo, to John and Elizabeth (Hutt) Vlieg. He married Margie Mulder in Reed City on Oct. 31, 1941.

He graduated from Imlay City High School and lived in the area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Ft. Lewis, Wash. He was a dairy farmer and truck gardener. He attended Good News Assembly of God in Marlette.

He is survived by daughters, Beth (Dick) McClain of Des Moines, Iowa, and Joan (George) Garlinger of Phoenix, Ariz.; sons, Leonard (Cathy) of Westminster, Colo., Robert (Joette) of Brown City, Cliff (Jan) of Washington, Glenn of Brown City; five grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 30 step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Hank of Westminster, Colo., and Bernard (Leona) of Marianne, Fla.; and sister, Effie (Rich) Mulder of Worth, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, in 1967.

Funeral services were held Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Good News Assembly of God, Marlette. Rev. Richardson officiated. Burial took place in Imlay Township cemetery, Imlay City.

Charles Bradley Goss
Died: Thursday, August 16, 2001

Belleview, Fla.

Charles Bradley Goss, 86, of Belleview, Fla. (formerly of Rochester and North Branch), died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001).

He was born March 3, 1915, in North Branch, to John and Millie (Barnes-Evans) Goss. He married Mabel Louise Eineder in Melvin on Aug. 14, 1940.

Mr. Goss worked for General Motors in Hazel Park and eventually worked and retired from the Rochester School System as a custodian. He was active in the Lake Weir Community Club in Florida. Charles was a member of The First Baptist Church of Belleview in Florida and formerly The Stone Baptist Church in Auburn Hills.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; children Elda Hollis of Troy, Ellen (Joe) Kapusin of Leesburg, Fla., John (Donna) Goss of Pontiac, Bradley (Pam) Goss of Oxford, Sue (Mike) Tibbets of Detroit and Stephen (Anna) Goss of Clarkston; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; brother, Glen Goss of Attica, and sister, Rosanah Shepherd of Imlay City.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ceil Goss; sisters, Jessie Zulkie and Saye Miller and his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held 1-4 and 6-8 p.m., Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Pastor David Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Arcadia Township cemetery.

Thomas W. Sudia
Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001

Columbiaville

Thomas W. Sudia, 52, of Columbiaville and Lapeer, died Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.

He was born Sept. 2, 1948, in Detroit, to Walter and Hazel (Seide) Sudia. He married Virginia Thompson in Clio on Dec18, 1971.

Tom graduated from Lapeer High School in 1966 and from Central Michigan University in 1971. He was a sergeant in the National Guard from 1971-1977. Tom was a special education teacher for Lapeer Community Schools from 1972-1975, then with the Lapeer ISD from 1975 to the present time. Tom had also been a water safety instructor and city league basketball supervisor with Lapeer Parks and Recreation. He Co-founded the Lapeer County Area XIII Special Olympics and had been the Assistant Area XIII Director for Special Olympics. Tom was named first Coach of the Year-State of Michigan. He had also been the International Special Olympic Head Coach for Gymnastics and Track and Field. Mr. Sudia was a Boys Brigade Ranger at First Baptist Church of Davison. He was an avid outdoorsman, hockey fan, a loving husband, father and friend. He will be greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ginger of Columbiaville; son Thomas of Columbiaville; daughter, Rebekah of Redford; parents, Walter and Hazel of Metamora; sister, Charlene Thomas of Traverse City; brother, William (Kathleen) of Davison; special cousin, James (Cindy) Seide of Dexter; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, and close friend, Arthur Thomas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sudia Family Fund.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at the Davison First Baptist Church. Pastor Frank McAuley will officiate. Family and friends will meet 9 a.m., Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at the funeral home, then proceed to Flint Memorial Park cemetery with a Military Graveside Service conducted by the Army National Guard.

Russell E. Loseing
Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001

Port Huron

Russell E. Loeding, 92, of Port Huron, died Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at Mercy Hospital, Port Huron.

He was born April 11, 1909, in Cash, to Charles and Bertha (Stern) Loeding. He married Hazel C. Henry in Port Huron on Aug. 6, 1938.

They spent their married life and raised their family in Port Huron. Evangelist Loading's professional career was at Mueller Brass Company where he worked in the billing, invoicing, claims and adjustment departments. He retired after 30 years of service. He was a very active community member. He spent great amounts of time in both his church, Wadhams Grove Community of Christ (formerly The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), and the Boy Scouts of America. He gave much to the people of the greater Port Huron area with his radiant smile, compassion, dedication and leadership. Over the years, he had significant church responsibilities in Lapeer and Genesee Counties.

He is survived by his loving son, John (Dahna) of Lapeer.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Charlene; brother, Melvin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wadhams Grove Community of Christ Church.

Funeral services were held Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Wadhams Grove Community of Christ. High Priest Larry Winters, Evangelist Harold Hastings and Elder Gary Wesch officiated. Burial was in the Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron.

Phyllis D. Truax
Died: Tuesday, August 14, 2001

Lapeer

Phyllis D. Truax, 70, of Lapeer, died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.

She was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Lapeer, to William and Myrtie (Slingland) Marr. She married William Truax in Imlay City on Aug. 11, 1949. She retired from Oakdale Center in 1989, completing 15 years of service. She enjoyed playing the organ, playing cards with family and friends, as well as going to the casino.

She is survived by her husband, William; daughters, Diann (Robert) Kropp of West Branch, Judith Sweet of West Virginia and Sandra Ripperdan of Lapeer; 20 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Pingel of Lapeer and Wilford Joan Marr of Reed City.

She was preceded in death by her son, Gene Patterson.

Funeral services were held Friday (Aug. 17, 2001) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. Pastor Paul Parker officiated. Burial will be in Stiles cemetery, Lapeer.

Roger Spina
Died: Tuesday, August 14, 2001

Almont

Roger Spina, 82, of Almont, died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at William Beaumont Hospital, Troy.

He was born Dec. 4, 1918 in Belle Vemon, Pa. He married Louise Margaret Cucchetti in Delle Vernon, Pa. on Oct. 9, 1943.

He is survived by his wife, Louise of Almont; daughters, Janis (David) Marsack of New Braunfels, Texas, Gail (Dennis) Mather of Goodrich; sons, Dennis (Barbara) of Onstead, Edward (Peggy) of Davisburg; 12 grandchildren,; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Al (Celeste) of Grosse Pointe Woods, Ronald of Clearwater, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Stefantz; brothers, Rocko and Larry.

Funeral services were held Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. Rev. Fr. Gerald Frawley officiated.

Lawrence "Barney" Lomason
Died: Tuesday, August 07, 2001

Lake Orion

Lawrence Barney Lomason, 80, of Lake Orion, died Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001).

He retired from Oakland County Road Commission.

He is survived by his three children, Dale, Carol (Edd) Bryant and Bonnie; and three grandchildren, Dale II, Tamara Bryant and Adam Bryant.

A private family services was held.

Harold A. Buhl
Died: Tuesday, August 07, 2001

Lapeer

Harold A. Buhl, 53, of Lapeer, died Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001).

He was born Feb. 13, 1948, in Flint, to Charlie and Bonnie (Gee) Buhl. He married Cheryl Hendershott on June 21, 1968.

He served his country honorably for 21 years in the Army. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Davison, and the Lapeer Eagles Club. He was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; his parents, Charlie and Bonnie of Columbiaville; one brother, Chuck of Columbiaville; two sisters, Chris Newcomb of Traverse City and Candy Knoll of Columbiaville; also the Hendershott family, and many other family members and close friends.

Funeral services were Saturday at The Columbiaville Chapel of Jansen Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Peggy Paige officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, Columbiaville.
