Frances "Fran" Casebeer

KALAMAZOO - Frances "Fran" Casebeer, 77, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. Back to top

Mrs. Casebeer was born Feb. 21, 1926 in Battle Creek to Stephen and Gladys Emma (Kniss) Martin. On May 26, 1945 she married Lloyd Casebeer. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1991. She spent most of her life in the Tekonsha area.

Fran attended the First Baptist Church of Tekonsha and was a member of the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary, Homer Post, Silver Dance Club and Research Club. She enjoyed bowling, fast pitch softball and sewing.

Survivors include three daughters Carol Willbur of Tekonsha, Gail and Greg Barker of Galesburg, and Ann and Norm Fether of Archibald, Ohio; brother Volney Martin of Battle Creek; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, one daughter Nancy Coffman Geer, one sister Margaret Robinson and one brother Donald Martin.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Tekonsha at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jim Berger officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery in Tekonsha.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo.

Arrangements are by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion.

Gladys P. Brown

UNION CITY - Gladys P. Brown, 78, of Union City died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at the Laurels of Coldwater. Back to top

Mrs. Brown was born March 6, 1925 in Leonidas Township to Clarence E. and Bessie L. (Lafler) Swihart. She married Eugene M. Brown on Aug. 24, 1940 in Leonidas, Mich. He preceded her in death in 1980.

Gladys had lived most of her life in the Union City area. She was a homemaker and she had worked at Kraft General Foods in Battle Creek for 32 years, retiring in 1982.

Gladys had her hair done every Friday. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, game shows and sports. Sunday dinner and holidays were at her house. She loved her family and her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son Dick Brown of Union City; one daughter Ruth and Jerry Michael of Coldwater; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three sisters Gertrude Renshaw of Union City, Mary Lou Gorton of Angola, Ind., and Patricia Batterson of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, one brother and four sisters.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Union City.

A service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home. Rev. John Moore of United Methodist Church, Union City, will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Union City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Health Center of Branch County-Hospice or Visiting Nurse Services-Branch County.

Lee Whitacre

COLDWATER - Lee Whitacre, 64, of Coldwater died Friday, May 30, 2003 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Back to top

Lee was born April 3, 1939 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. to Ralph and Marie (Motter) Whitacre. He graduated from Ft. Wayne High School.

Lee married Janet Debnar on Dec. 28, 1990 in Coldwater. She survives.

Lee had been a resident of the Coldwater area for the past 13 years. He had worked for Coldwater Estates for the past 12 years.

He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and racing. He belonged to Eagles #1907 Coldwater.

Survivors include his wife Janet; one daughter Lee Ann and Tim Bickford of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; three sons Tim and Jackie Whitacre of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Scott Whitacre of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Randy and Tina Whitacre of Garrett, Ind.; one step-daughter Jeannie Rhoades of Coldwater; 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters Judith Hodges of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Janet and Henry Luce of Coldwater; and two brothers Allan Whitacre of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Richard Whitacre of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater.

A service will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater. Burial will take place in Blairsville, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Scholarship Fund.

Thomas A. Fredenburg

LEONIDAS - Thomas A. Fredenburg, age 66, of 29740 Jacksonburg Road, Leonidas, left this earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 20, 2003 as a result of injuries he received in a farming accident at his home. Back to top

He was born in Colon on Aug. 12, 1936 to the late Guy and Mabel B. (Slagle) Fredenburg. Tom had made his home in and around Colon all of his life, graduating from the Colon High School with the class of 1955.

On Aug. 9, 1955 he married Doris M. Draime in Centreville. Tom worked for the former Darling Manufacturing, and was a Tool & Die maker at Leco Corporation, Bronson Specialties and was presently a supervisor at Maddox Industries, all of Bronson.

Tom was an active member of the Colon Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, and had served on the board of Deacons. He also enjoyed working in the Awana program of the church. To his family and friends, Tom was known as a tinkerer. He enjoyed fixing lawn mowers and other small engines.

Members of his family include his wife Doris; three sons Rick T. Fredenburg and friend Alice Martin of Kalamazoo, Jody C. and Tammy Fredenburg of Mendon, and Jeffrey L. and Marie Fredenburg of Sherwood; three grandchildren Cassandra, Jordan and Mitchell Fredenburg; one brother Phillip L. and Donna Fredenburg of Colon; two half-brothers John D. and Peg Emmel of Union City and George W. and Sharon Emmel of Colon; two half-sisters Joyce Broker of Colon and Barbara Gronda of Carlton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Chari L. Fredenburg in 1970 and one brother Robert F. Fredenburg in 1983 and a half-brother Charles B. Hoyt.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, June 2, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD of Colon.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Thomas A. Fredenburg will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Colon Baptist Church with Rev. Robert N. Baxter and Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside cemetery in Colon.

If desired the family suggests that memorials may be made in Tom's memory to the Colon Baptist Church.

Corey Dean McCurley

COLDWATER -- Corey Dean McCurley, 14 of Coldwater, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 in Manistee.

He was born on March 3, 1989 to Hal Dean and Karen J. (Roby) McCurley.

He was a freshman at Coldwater High School and was an honor roll student.

He was student of the month for October in the eighth grade and was enrolled in STATS Class (Studies for Academically Talented Students).

He was a member of the Up and Atom Club, and 4-H Club where he showed chickens and hogs at the Branch County 4-H Fair.

He was also a member of the Branch County Junior Livestock Association, Branch County 4-H Shooting Sports, Quality Deer Management Association and AYSO soccer.

He was an avid outdoorsman, especially hunting, fishing and camping.

He also loved to ride his four-wheelers with his friends.He worked part time at the Qwick Stop in Kinderhook and helped his dad on the family farm and with the Deer Management Program.

He is survived by his parents, Hal and Karen McCurley; sister, Sarah McCurley; paternal grandparents, William A. and Mary L. McCurley; maternal grandparents, Glen R. and Nancy J. Roby; aunts and uncles, Dave and Mary Roby of Texas, Terry and Sherri Halstead of Coldwater, Dan Roby of Indiana and Jim McCurley of Tennessee; several great-aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at the Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003 at First Baptist Church in Coldwater, with pastors David Anderson, David Cole and David Garman officiating.

Burial will follow at Knauss cemetery in Branch County.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Branch County 4-H Foundation.

Charles R. Starrett

ORLAND, Ind. -- Charles R. Starrett, 75 of Orland, Ind., died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at his residence. Back to top

He was born November 3, 1927 in Steuben County, Ind., to Almond and Doris (Houtz) Starrett. He married Beverly (Lawrence) Starrett on March 14, 1953 in Bronson. She survives.

He was a retired, self-employed carpenter and also formerly started as a brick mason for Henry Merriman.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Orland American Legion Post 423. He enjoyed working and people, collecting model cars and Dalmatian dog figurines.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Starrett; son, David and Sandi Starrett of Orland, Ind.; three sisters, Evelyn Winebrenner of Albion, Ada Weiberg of Orland, Ind., and Marian Needstine of Orland, Ind.; and brother, Elmer Starrett of Paragould, Ark. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Church, Bronson, with Pastor Don Matteson officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn cemetery, Orland, Ind.

Memorials may be made to Orland American Legion Post 423, P.O. Box 448, Orland, IN 46776.

Helen M. Myers

BURLINGTON -- Helen M. Myers, age 66, of Burlington, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at her home.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1937 in Calhoun County to Adeal "Bear" and Mirtie Ellen (Weller) Herman. She was married to Keith Myers and he preceded her in death in 1977. Helen was a lifetime resident of Union City. Mrs. Myers worked at Maple Lawn in Coldwater, Win Schuler's, Marshall, Lamb Knit, Colon and Federal Mogul, Mendon where she was a press operator. Helen was a former president and union representative. She loved to square dance and had helped at Union City Elementary Schools as a foster grandmother. Surviving are three sons, Deryl and Sue Myers of Vicksburg, Larry and Melody Myers of Union City and Dale and Amy Myers of Union City; seven grandchildren, Derick and Jenni Myers, Kimberly, Stacey, Zackery, Britta, Ryan and Brock Myers; several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Sandy Wortman; brothers, John Herman and Frank Herman; and sisters, Dolly Whitcomb, Janie Risner, Donna Hughes and Mary Hughes.

She was preceded in death by husband, Keith; brothers, Paul "Chub" Herman, Raymond "Cub" Herman, Morris Herman, David "Jack" Herman and Adeal Herman; and sister, Alice Herman. Back to top

Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Union City. Services are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Burlington Church of God with Pastor Kenneth Edgell and Pastor Wayne Halbleib officiating. Burial will be at Burlington cemetery, Burlington. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Foundation.

Louis B. Anchill

COLDWATER TOWNSHIP -- Louis B. Anchill, age 58, of Coldwater Township died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 unexpectedly at his home. Back to top

Lou was born on Jan. 13, 1946 in Detroit to Louis and Dorothy (Hoskins) Anchill.

Lou worked at Nortel Networks as a Telecommunication Engineer. He had served with the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Anchill has been a resident of Coldwater for 30 years coming from Detroit.

He was a member The First Baptist Church in Coldwater, a member of the Coldwater Jaycees and Society for Creative Anachronism. He was assistant scoutmaster for the Lakeland Boy Scout Troop and a very active Republican party member.

Lou was a bowler, coin collector and liked to travel. He sponsored the Iditarod and Yukonquest in Alaska.

Lou is survived by his son, Philip Anchill of Ann Arbor; sister, Lynn Code of Holly; nephew, James and Tammy Hash and grandniece, Jamie Brynne Hash of Morgan City, La.; and nephew Jason and April Hash and grandnephew Michael Austin Hash of Holly.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Dave Anderson officiating.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Grove cemetery in Coldwater. Memorials may be directed to the Tibbits Foundation or to the American Heart Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Leland L. Bidwell

BRONSON -- Leland L. Bidwell, age 75, of Bronson, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Back to top

He was born July 11, 1928 in Sturgis, son of Leon F. and Leona C. (Osborne) Bidwell and had attended Bronson Schools. He married Maude Emans on March 26, 1955 in Angola, Ind.

Leland was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict; a member of the American Legion Post 52 in Coldwater; was an regular bowler at Midway Lanes until 1995 due to his failing health; an avid reader of western books and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leland retired as a groundskeeper at the Coldwater Country Club after eight years; had helped manage the Pine Resort Cabins on Randall Lake; was a former employee of the City of Bronson and had worked in several area factories.

Surviving are his wife, Maude; daughters and sons-in-law, Leora and Donald Bull of Bronson, Dianna and Tony Hubbard of Fremont, Ind. and LeaAnn and Jr. Moore of Burlington; sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd "Butch" and Tamera Bidwell and Norman and Debbie Bidwell all of Coldwater; two grand "sons" that he raised, Patrick and Alicia Bidwell of Fremont, Ind and Darel and Edith Bidwell of Bronson; 19 additional grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Norman Bidwell of Quincy; his sister, Helen Ford of Eastpointe; his grand "dog" Brandy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two infant sons; his parents; his daughter-in-law, Jean Bidwell; two sisters; a brother; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Bronson with Pastor John Fields officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside cemetery, Colon, with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Post 259 of the American Legion and Post 5003 of the VFW.

Friends may call at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004 where memorial donations are suggested to the family in lieu of flowers. Obituary also at www.kolcz.com where private messages may be left for the family.
