Alice Martin

COLDWATER -- Alice Martin of Coldwater died on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at The Laurels of Coldwater.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater and they will be announced as soon as they become available.

Dolores L. Spooner

UNION CITY -- Dolores L. Spooner, age 78, of Union City, died on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

She was born on June 22, 1926, in Calhoun County, the daughter of Blake and Madge (Lamb) Blanchard. She married Dale Spooner on Dec. 23, 1946, in Angola, Ind.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three sons, Dennis (Becki) Spooner, Dean (Ivanne) Spooner and Greg (Donna) Hull, all of Union City; one daughter, Deanne (Tom) Rathburn of Union City; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Sharon (Greg) Bruder of Coldwater; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Elouise (Frank) Francisco of Ceresco.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dale; two sons, Dale Jr. and Larry; and one sister, Sue Petroff.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City, a member of the Deacons of the church, the Red Hat Society -- Scarlet Sisterhood Chapter, a charter member of Curves, and she loved to spend time at the Chatterbox and was devoted to her family.

Visitation will be today, Dec. 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the First Congregational Church in Union City, with Rev. Wayne Halbleib officiating. Burial will be in Newton cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church.

Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City.

Randy L. McFate

UNION CITY -- Randy Lee McFate, 41, of Union City, died on Dec. 9, 2004, at Battle Creek Health System.

He was born on June 27, 1963, in Jackson County, Michigan, the son of Vernon and Eleanor (Keeler) McFate.

He had lived most of his life in the Union City area.

Randy had been employed at Griswold Machine and Engineering, Union City, where he did machine setup.

He is survived by three children, Ryan McFate, Jason McFate, and Kimberly McFate, all of Union City; his father, Vernon McFate, of Sherwood; two brothers, David McFate, of North Adams, and Jim McFate, of Bradenton, Fla.; and special friend Ronda Loss.

Randy graduated from Union City High School in 1981.

His pride and joy was his 1969 Camaro Z-28.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Putnam Funeral Home, im Union City.

Services will be on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Putnam Funeral Home, in Union City, with Pastor John Fields officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Union City.

Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home, of Union City.

Harry S. Pike

QUINCY -- Harry S. Pike, 77, of Quincy, passed away on Dec.r 8, 2004, at Parkview Hospital, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born on July 28, 1927, in Battle Creek, to Walter and Della (Vaughn) Pike.

He married Retha L. Boyd on Aug. 9, 1980, in Coldwater. She survives.

Harry was born and raised in the Battle Creek area, moving to Quincy in 1980.

Mr. Pike had been a roofer in Tucson, Ariz., for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Retha Pike; three sons, David (Linda) Pike, of Tucson, Ariz., Harry D. (Sandy) Pike, of Seattle, Wash; and Raymond Pike, of Tucson, Ariz.; step-children Ruthanne (Evert) Palmateer, of Coldwater, Barbara (David) Bennett, of Kalamazoo, Roy "Rusty" Birch, of Quincy, Timmie Birch, of Knoxville, Tenn., Jimmie Birch, of Quincy, and Charles Birch, of Quincy; several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; four brothers, Walter Pike, Harold Pike, and Robert Pike, all of Arizona, and Douglas Pike, of Missouri; and a half sister, Donna Geringer.

Harry was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

He was an accomplished carpenter, and loved to build things.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Dec.13, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Putnam Funeral Home, in Coldwater.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at 3 p.m., at the Lakeview cemetery, in Quincy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Arrangements are by Putnam Funeral Home, 11 East Chicago St., Coldwater.

Douglas Harvey

COLDWATER -- Douglas Harvey, 45, of Winder, Ga., formerly of Coldwater, died on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004. at his home in Winder.

Doug was born on Aug. 24, 1959, in Coldwater, to Chester and Reda (Lyon) Harvey.

Doug had worked for Felpausch, in Coldwater, and also worked as a meat cutter at Winn Dixie, in South Carolina, and Quality Foods and Ingles Meat Processing, in Georgia.

Doug graduated from Coldwater High School in 1978. He has lived in the South Carolina and Georgia area for the past 18 years. Doug was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and also enjoyed woodworking. He was very artistic and proud of his American Indian heritage. He spent much time making all sorts of American Indian artifacts. Doug enjoyed people. He was a very kind and outgoing, and seemed to make friends with everyone.

Doug is preceded in death by both parents, and sisters Delores Payne, and Louise Wardwell.

Doug is survived by his triplet, 18-month-old sons, Aiden Joseph Harvey, Bryson Lee Harvey and Cameron Wellington Harvey, all of Winder, Ga.; his brother, Larry Harvey (and Lorraine); sisters Linda Ethington (and Floyd), Bonnie Winfrey (and Harry), and Peggy Harvey, all of Coldwater; and several nieces & nephews

The funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Dutcher Funeral Home, with Pastor Shayne Looper of the Lockwood Community Church officiating.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:00 p.m., at Dutcher Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Lockwood cemetery, Ovid Township.

Memorials may be directed to The American Diabetes Association.

Muriel Saylor

INDEPENDENCE, MO. -- Muriel Saylor, 82, of Independence, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Independence Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the East 39th Street Congregation of the Community of Christ. Cremation. Interment will be held later at the Victoria Memorial Gardens in Oldcastle, Toronto, Canada.

Muriel was born on June 23, 1922, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to Harry and Sarah (Camlin) Lindsay. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, fishing, and camping. Muriel was a member of the East 39th Street Community of Christ.

She was married to Frederick M. Saylor on March 6, 1972; he passed away on May 11, 1978. Survivors include a son, Fred Saylor, of Independence; two daughters, Judy Neill, and Kathy Wood, of Independence; two brothers, Gordon Lindsay, and Ronald Lindsay, of Windsor; two sisters, Eileen Chambers, of Woodlands, Tex., and Millie Newman, of Windsor; four grandchildren, Cherie Neill, and April Sweetland, of Blue Springs, Mo., Jason Wood, of Kansas City, Mo., and Jamie Wood, of Independence; and three great-grandchildren, Alayna Sweetland, William Sweetland, and Ellissa Neill.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the American Heart Association. Online condolences may be left at www.carsonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are handled by the Carson-Speaks Chapel.

Rosella (Rosie) Hantz

FREMONT, Ind. -- Rosella (Rosie) Hantz, age 76, of Fremont, Ind., died on Aug. 27, 2004 at Northern Lakes Nursing Center in Angola, Ind.

Hantz was born on Nov. 25, 1927 in Fort Wayne, Ind., to William and Edith (Henline) Roebel. She married W. Dean Hantz on Dec. 15, 1945 in Angola. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1981.

Hantz was formerly a cook at the Top Hat Restaurant in Angola, and worked at Gay's Coffee Shop in Fremont. She was also employed at ILC, Inc. and Salga, both in Fremont.

She was a member of Fremont Community Church, the Friendship Circle Club and the Merry Mixers Club, all in Fremont.

Hantz is survived by two daughters, Judy and Jim Jones of Angola and Barbara and Doug Levitz of Hamilton, Ind.; two sons, David and Connie Hantz and Rodney Hantz, all of Fremont; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Siddal of Hamilton and Geraldine Walker of Ossian, Ind.; and one brother, Russell and Bonnie Roebel of Fort Wayne.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Gary Dean Hantz; one grandson, William Dean Hantz; one brother, Paul (Bud) Roebel; and one daughter-in-law, Shirley Hantz.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Indiana times) today, Aug. 30 at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont. Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. (Indiana time) on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Beams Funeral Home, with Dr. Gregory L. Chupp officiating. Burial will be in South Scott cemetery in Angola.

Memorials may be made to the Fremont Community Church or South Scott cemetery Association.

Arrangements are by Beams Funeral Home of Fremont.

Virginia A. Sudz

BEVERLY HILLS -- Virginia A. Sudz, age 80, of Beverly Hills, formerly of Coldwater, died on Aug. 27, 2004.

Sudz was a member of the Theta Sigma Chi sorority.

She was the beloved wife of George J. for 60 years; the dear mother of Gordon L., Martin J. Patricia M. Timlin (Jerome G.) and Greianne R. Post (William); grandmother of Christopher, Jennifer, Anthony, Michael, Katie, Andy, Amy Jo, Corey and Ashley; sister of Patricia Davis.

The family will receive friends at Our Lady Queen of Martyre, located at 32340 Pierce in Beverly Hills, on Tuesday after 11 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11:30 a.m.

Memorial tributes may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 20300 Civiv Center Drive, Ste. 100, Southfield, MI 48076.

Arrangements are by A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home.

Leonard A. Hollingsworth

GREENVILLE -- Mr. Leonard A. Hollingsworth, age 71, died on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004 at Metron of Greenville.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1933 in Griffin, Ga.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving three years during the Korean Conflict, two years in the Reserves and also in the National Guard. He was employed by Drawtight in Belleville for many years and also worked at Essex Wire in Hillsdale.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Helen, of Belding; his children, Edith Hollingsworth and Raymond Hollingsworth, both of Allen, Debra Anstead of Angola, Ind., Kathryn (David) Stayner of Quincy, and Kevin (Jodi) Hollingsworth of Coldwater; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Jack Hollingsworth of Litchfield; his sister, Rosalie Preston of Ypsilanti; his sisters-in-law, Shirley (Barry) Taylor of Greenville and Sheila (Bill) Scofield of Gowen; and his brother-in-law, Terry (Pam) Bailey of Gowen.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hurst Funeral Home of Greenville, (616) 754-6616. Pastor William Overton of Family Life Center Church of God will officiate the services.

Interment will be at the Spencer Mills cemetery.

Visitation will be held one to two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one's choice.

Barbara J. Nelson

QUINCY -- Mrs. Barbara J. Nelson, age 78, of Quincy and formerly of Kalamazoo, died on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2004 in Marshall.

Barbara was born on Oct. 29, 1925, in Quincy, a daughter of Harry and Josie (Clingan) Lampman. She had been employed in the Kalamazoo area most of her life and enjoyed her retirement on the lake, fishing with family and friends and playing marbles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.C. Nelson, on Aug. 19, 1982; two brothers, Laurel Dale and Robert; and two sisters, Jeanette and Ella Mae.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet (Alvin) Claxton of Mattawan; a son, Richard Johnson of Blackwell, Okla.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Esther Demarest of Coldwater; a special friend, Kathleen Griffith of Tekonsha; a special great niece, Melanie Johnson of Tekonsha; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Melanie Johnson residence, 3984 17 Mile Road in Tekonsha, and on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Alvin and Janet Claxton residence, 57880 Kingdon Drive in Mattawan, with the Rev. Barbara Pryor officiating at both homes.

Private interment of cremains will take place at a later date.

Arrangements were made with the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street in Kalamazoo.

Harry G. Harwood

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- Harry G. Harwood, age 68, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died on Aug. 21, 2004. He was born in Jonesville.

Harry was the owner of R&H Service in Apache Junction, Ariz.

He is survived by daughters Diana and Kay; sons Ken and Butch; two sisters; three brothers; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lakeshore Mortuary, located at 1815 S. Dobson Road in Mesa, Ariz.

The family prefers that donations be made in Harry's memory to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85014. The family is grateful for the care provided by Hospice of the Valley.

Arrangements are entrusted to Lakeshore Mortuary in Mesa, Ariz.
