Sally A. Kimbel

BRONSON -- Sally Ann Kimbel, 70, of Bronson, passed from this life on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility, in Coldwater.

Sally was born on Feb. 1, 1934, in Coldwater, daughter of Sylvester and Catherine (Herman) Ross, and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1953, and married Edmund Kimbel on July 7, 1956, at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, in Bronson. Ed died on Aug. 5, 1992.

Sally had worked for 20 years at the former Darling Manufacturing Co. in Bronson until 1967, when the company moved. She then worked for 25 years at the former Best Western Hotel in Coldwater, retiring in 1992 after the death of her husband.

She was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, in Bronson, and the Rosary Society. She dearly loved and was extremely proud of her granddaughter, Brianne Kimbel. A wonderful wife and mother, Sally loved her children and all of her family. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and cooking and always looked forward to decorating their home for the holidays.

Surviving are her daughter, Sharon Kimbel, her son, Michael Kimbel, and granddaughter, Brianne Kimbel, all of Bronson. Also surviving are her sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores and Arnold Sikorski, of Bronson, Sylvia and Larry Johns, of Coldwater, and Nancy and Colin Funk, of Angola, Ind.; and her brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Teri Ross, of Bronson.

Funeral Mass for Sally A. Kimbel will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, At St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. John Tran officiating. Prayers before Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Kolcz Funeral Home, in Bronson.

The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to the family.

Bertha Mae Swope

UNION CITY -- Bertha Mae Swope, 80, of Union City, died on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the Battle Creek Health System.

Arrangements will be announced at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd., of Colon.

Wilma J. Elser

LITCHFIELD -- Wilma J. Elser, 92, longtime Litchfield resident, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.

She was born on June 19, 1912, in Butler Township, to Bert and Mabel (Rossman) VanPatten. A graduate of Eastern Michigan Normal College (EMU), Mrs. Elser became a teacher at the Litchfield Community Schools, Sand Creek, Whig Center and the Manor Foundation in Jonesville.

She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, the Retired Teachers Association of Litchfield and the Litchfield First Baptist Church.

On Dec. 29, 1934, she married Samuel Ervin Elser, and he preceded her in death in 1999. Also preceding her in death were three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include six children, Arlon (Shirley) Elser of Battle Creek, Krenlyn (Mick) Maquire of Seattle, Wash., Carolyn (Ron) Hollstein of Overland Park, Kan., Sandra (Willie) Yeager of Bloomington, Ill., Deanna Elser of Jackson, and Gregory (Eloise) Elser of Quincy; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Litchfield, with Pastors Brent Stille and Morris Anderson officiating.

Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery in Litchfield.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield.

Memorials to the First Baptist Church or the Gideon Memorial Park would be appreciated.

SPRING LAKE -- Mrs. Beverly A. (Uselton) Morrison, age 66, of Spring Lake and formerly of Caledonia, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Uselton; two brothers, Orrie W. Smith, Jr. and Allen W. Smith; and a sister, Alice Peasley.

Surviving are her husband, Larry Morrison; her children, Tom and Brenda Hoffman, Ned and Lisa Hoffman, and Jan and Bob VanKalker; her grandchildren, Sarah Hoffman, PFC Justin Hoffman, Heather VanKalker, Dan and Kathy VanKalker, Julie VanKalker, Amy Hoffman, Amanda Hoffman and Jake Hoffman; her sisters, Jean Schueller and Gloria Howell; her brother-in-law, Bob Peasley; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Stroo Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. Interment will be in the Alaska cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends today, Dec. 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from noon until the time of the funeral service at the Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street SE, Grand Rapids, Mich. 49508

Edwin F. Kowalski

TEKONSHA -- Edwin F. Kowalski, 81, of Tekonsha, died on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at his home.

Edwin was born on Dec. 16, 1923, in Butler Township, to Frank and Cora (Johnson) Kowalski.

Edwin married Frances (Fran) Seiler on April 30, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Bronson.

Edwin has been a resident of Branch County all of his life. Edwin graduated from Tekonsha High School in 1941. He had worked for Post Cereal in Battle Creek for 10 years. Edwin owned and operated his family farm and was a self employed builder retiring after 56 years. Edwin was a lifetime member of the St. Charles Borromeo Church, the Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau and The Marshall Order of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and playing cards. His greatest enjoyment was being with his wife, Fran of 59 years who was his caregiver during the duration of his kidney disease. As a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather he cherished the times spent with his family.

Edwin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

Edwin is preceded in death by his parents.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Fran; daughters Kandith (Jerry) Martinson, of Coldwater, Gretchen (David) Stefanski, of Tekonsha, Mary (Greg) Zenczak, of Brecksville, Ohio, and Evett (Joe) Moynihan, of Bloomfield Hills; sister Margaret Smoker, of Coldwater, eight grandchildren, David (Tracy) Martinson, Daniel (Jennifer) Martinson , Matthew (Shawn) Stefanski, Emily Stefanski, Kate Zenczak, Michelle Zenczak, Anna Zenczak, and Maureen Moynihan; and two great-grandchildren, Maddy Martinson, and Jacob Martinson.

The service will be held on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Church, with Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley officiating.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, from 2 to 8 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., at Dutcher Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery, in Girard Township. Memorials are suggested to Scleroderma Research Registry.

Carl R. Sanders

READING -- Carl R. Sanders, 84, of Reading, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1920, in Colon, to Carl L. and Grace (West) Sanders. Carl graduated from Coldwater High School in 1938 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, including four years of serving in the Pacific. He belonged to the Reading American Legion and was a former member of the Hillsdale Elks Lodge.

He retired from Climax Mollydenum Co., in Coldwater, where he was a lab technician for over 30 years.

On Nov. 23, 1944, he married Ella (Struble), and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Barbara Dennis, and Phil Johns, of Reading, Connie (Scott) Gibbney, of Lambertville, and Debbie (Michael) Thorp, of Hillsdale; one son, Randy (Debbie) Sanders, of Reading; one sister, Jean Gilchrest, of Coldwater; one brother, Paul Sanders, of Palm Bay, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his sister, Helen Tupper; a brother, John Sanders; and a son-in-law, Donald Dennis.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, at 11 a.m., at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Father Thomas Butler officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood cemetery, Reading. Visitation is scheduled on Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Jane A. Cope

FREMONT, IND. -- Jane A. Cope, 70, died on Dec. 28, 2004, at Parkview Hospital, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Beams Funeral Home, in Fremont, Ind. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, with the Rev. George Foulk officiating. Burial is at Jamestown cemetery, in Fremont.

Darwin Lee "Dar" Alford

UNION CITY -- Darwin Lee "Dar" Alford, 60, of Union City, Michigan passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at his home.

Dar was born on Jan.8, 1944 in Kalamazoo, to Vervel and Estella (Bunce) Alford. He married Tina L. Lepper on June 2, 1970, in Union City. She survives.

Mr. Alford has lived in the Union City area for 34 years.

He had been employed as a dock worker for a trucking firm.

He is survived by his wife, Tina; children, Kimberly M. Audette, of Battle Creek; Michelle R. Thiel (fianc/ Kevin Sakowski), of Rockford; Justin W. Alford (Angela), of Mackinaw, Ill.; Darcy L. Alford (partner Katy Duncan), of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Robert Alford of Paw Paw, and Theodore Alford of North Carolina; a sister, Marilyn Filip, of Paw Paw; and two grandchildren, Nathen Hebner, and Breana Hebner.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer Lou Alford, and a sister, Mary Lou Sumpter.

Dar was a 1962 graduate of Portage Central High School.

He was a member of the First Congregational UCC; NRA; past volunteer firefighter; he was the first EMT for the Union City Fire Department. He loved the outdoors, golfing and he coached many sports teams involving his kids.

A gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Union City.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Union City, with Mr. Tom Rathburn officiating.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Congregational UCC; or the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home, of Union City.

David W. Davis

FREMONT, Ind. -- David W. Davis, age 54 of Fremont, Ind. Died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004 in Fremont. He was born Nov. 28, 1949 in Wendell, Idaho to Wayne and Beverly (Bruner) Davis. His father is surviving.

Davis married Vera Louise (Hathaway) Davis) on Jan. 21, 1983 in Coldwater. She survives.

He was employed at Hendrickson International in Kendallville, Ind. And was a United States Air Force Vietnam War Veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Vera Davis of Fremont; three daughters, Holly Davis of Fremont, Sarah Davis of Niles and Katie Davis of Fremont; his father, Wayne Davis of Fremont; one sister, Penny and Steve Thomas of Rupert, Idaho and two nephews, Shon and Trenton Thomas of Rupert, Idaho.

Davis was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Davis.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) at the Beams Funeral Home in Fremont.

Services are slated for 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Lakeside cemetery in Fremont. Military Committal Services will be conducted by the Fremont American Legion Cassel Post # 257. Kenneth Binkley will be officiating.

Memorial may be directed to Davis' daughter, Holly, Sarah and Katie Davis.

Arrangements are by Beams Funeral Home of Fremont, (260) 495-2915.

Marilyn Joanne Paskett

MARSHALL -- Marilyn Joanne (Zeluff) Paskett, age 59 of Marshall died on Sept. 6, 2004 at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Paskett was born on April 18, 1945 in Albion to C. Marc and Marjorie ( Rice) Zeluff. She lived most of her life within the Calhoun County area. She worked as a teacher for 36 years. On Aug. 1, 1975 she married Michael "Mick" Paskett. He survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Paskett is survived by three sons, Marc Paskett of Chicago, Stephen and Sean Paskett of Marshall; one brother, Richard (Bev) Zeluff of

Coldwater and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jack.

Visitation for Mrs. Paskett will take place on Friday, Sept. 10, from2 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive visitors from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating her life will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Marshall United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Len Schoenherr officiating. Cremation will follow.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the family or to the Marshall Community foundation for the Marilyn Paskett scholarship fund. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.
