DE WITT - Joyce E. DeWitt, aged 62, of Jamestown, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Joyce was born October 9, 1948 in Bozeman, MT, to Sieger and Helen Heys. She was an avid reader, enjoyed Bible studies and spending time at their cottage on Hamlin Lake. Joyce loved and enjoyed the time she shared with her three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister-in-law, Shirley Hoeksema. Surviving are her loving husband of 40 years, Thomas; sons, Paul (Marcy) DeWitt, Mike (Nicole) DeWitt, Matt (Becky) DeWitt; Grandchildren, Chloe, Lucas, and Ella; sisters and brothers, Lois (Lee) VanTatenhove, Dick (Deb) Heys, Ron (Michelle) Heys, Tim (Lynda) Heys, Bill (Kathi) Heys all of the Grand Rapids area, Bev (Dan) Triemstra of Bozeman, MT; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack (Bea) DeWitt, Betty Jelsema, Jan (Jerry) Swan, Ron (Minie) Hoeksema; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, at Jamestown Christian Reformed Church, 1653 Riley St., with Pastor Mike Wetzig officiating. Interment in Winchester cemetery. KASS - Frank C. Kass, aged 79, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, September 24, 2011. Frank was a Corpsman in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He taught science at Cutlerville Christian School and Hillcrest High School in Jos, Nigeria in West Africa. Frank always greeted friends and strangers alike with a warm smile and firm handshake. His sister Frances preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; children, Connie Kass, Carole Jansen, Charles (Rebecca) Kass; grandchildren, Brenda, Ruth, Robert; brothers, Ted (Ellen) Kass, Walt Kass, David (Karen) Kass; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am, Monday, September 26, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave., SE. Interment in Blain cemetery. The family will greet friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and on Monday from 10 to 11 am at church.

DANTUMA - Winifred "Winnie" Dantuma, age 89, of Cutlerville, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 7, 2012. Winnie was a loving and faithful mother, who devoted her life to the care of her children. Her husband, Edward, preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Lavonne Martin, Jan (Larry) Hibma, Joyce (Bruce) Dykhouse, Edward Dantuma, Thomas Dantuma, Bruce Dantuma; her ten grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a sister-in-law, Fran (Ron) Aardema, brother-in-law, John (Virginia) Dantuma; many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held 11 am Friday, August 10, at Dutton United Reformed Church, 6950 Hanna Lake SE, with Mr. David Meengs officiating. Interment in Winchester cemetery. For those wishing to give a memorial donation, please consider the needs of the family. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home, and on Friday one hour before the service at the church.

WHEELER - Wallace Franklin "Wally" Wheeler, age 88, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2012. Wally served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a pharmacist mate-3rd class. He worked the majority of his life for Consumers Power Company for over 41 years. He was a past member of the South Congregational Church of Grand Rapids. He loved music and was a talented musician of multiple instruments. He played for the Korn Brothers Band, who played for retirement homes and assorted community venues. He was an avid bicyclist, enjoyed dancing, and was a collector of model cars and transportation models. Wally was a proud and patriotic American and a member of the American Legion. His son, David Wallace Wheeler, preceded him in death in 1971. Wally was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his beloved friend of 40 years, Madelyn Stieg; his children, Linda (John) Kilgore, Scott A. Wheeler, Mark S. Wheeler; his grandchildren, Chris, Jason, Justin, Brad; seven great-grandchildren; Madelyn's family, Nan (Mike) Smigiel, Julie Smigiel, Dylan Altenburg. The Funeral Service will be held 1 pm Friday, August 10, at Stroo Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Host officiating. Interment in Pine Hill cemetery. SELMO - Phyllis M. Selmo (Liggett), age 50, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2012. Phyllis was a nurse at the Kent County Jail. Surviving are her children, Ben Baas, Brent Conely, Aleita (Ryan) Brown; her father, Leroy (Patti) Liggett; her brothers and sisters, Ronnie (Cynthia) Liggett, Charlie Musk, Andy (Jeannie) Musk, Chris Russell, Leanne Lang, Lori Woodward, Eric Liggett; and many nieces and nephews. ADRIANSE - Robert Eugene Adrianse ("Big Bob"), age 83, of Kentwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 13, 2012, surrounded by his family. Bob was a truck driver for Spartan Stores for many years, and successfully drove over two million miles accident free. Surviving are his children, Daniel (Deb) Adrianse, Barbara (Ralph) Kimble, Robert W. (Kathy) Adrianse; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. The family expresses their sincere thanks to Bob's neighborhood friends for all their love and support. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, August 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Stroo Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Woodlawn cemetery.

FUNK - Robert C. "RC" Funk, age 74, of Byron Center, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. He was born in Wilson, Kansas, on June 2, 1938. He was a graduate of Wilson High School, and a 1964 graduate of Fort Hays State College. RC served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1959 and retired from Travelers Insurance Co., and Kentwood Public Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Maria. Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, Delores; his daughters, Christine (Doug) Nanzer, Laura (Mike) Peterson, Cindy (Mike) Sellin; his son, Steve (Heidi) Funk; grandchildren, Andrew Dykstra, Emily Funk, Rachel and Dougie Nanzer, Benjamin, Madeline, and Kaitlin Peterson, Brittney, Lauren, and Ashley Sellin; step-grandsons, Roger and Jacob Taylor; sisters, Jean Hirsch of Mesa, AZ, Elaine Lovett Glenn (Patrick) of Medicine Park, OK; several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church, where RC was a member (1934 52nd St. SE) at 11 am Monday, August 20, with Rev. Rodney Otto officiating. Interment in Winchester cemetery. KUIPHOF - Willard J. "Bill" Kuiphof, age 75, of Middleville, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Bill loved gardening, softball, family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Chloe; his daughters, Bonnie Jahnke, Sherry Sterken; step-children, Margie (Bob) Shoemaker, Mike (Karen) Creasy, Carole McChriston, Cindy (Dennis) Shook; a brother, Gerald (Barb) Kuiphof; sister-in-law, Vernice Kuiphof; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, August 20, from 10 to 11 am followed by the Funeral Service at 11 am at Middleville Christian Reformed Church, 708 West Main Street, with Pastor Tom DeVries officiating. URBANOWSKI - Christine E. (Lange) Urbanowski, of Kentwood. Born February 6, 1924, in Detroit to Ferdinand and Dorothy (Weiss) Lange, passed away August 20, 2012, in Grand Rapids. Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; brother, John Lange; and sister, Dorothy Decker. She is survived by her children, Dan (Karen Ann) Urbanowski, Thomas (Denise) Urbanowski, and Suzanne (Todd) Statetzny; her grandchildren, Dereck, Scott, Monica, Benjamin, and April Urbanowski, and Morgan Statetzny; her sister, Margaret Swartout; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Wednesday, August 22, at Stroo Funeral Home. A Vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm. Interment at Woodmere cemetery. WARSEN - SO2 SEAL David John Warsen, USN, age 27, of Kentwood, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 16, 2012. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Faith Driesenga. Surviving are his parents, Patty (Greg) Vroon-Frank and David (Stephanie) Warsen; his fiancee, Karlyn Deveau; brothers, DARK Aaron, Kyle, Ryan Warsen, Sam Frank; grandparents, John (Mary) Vroon, Duke (Reatha) Warsen, Don (Theresa) Frank, Greg (Bonnie) Frey, Jay (Harlene) Driesenga; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. There are no words to explain how loving of a person David was. We have never met someone who makes everyone around him smile and laugh. He was an amazing person, a special son, an unbelievable fiance and brother, and a loving friend to all. Everything he did, he did it with pride and to the best of his ability. Failure to David was never an option. He thrived off of peoples doubts and disbeliefs. We are 100% positive that David is standing next to God right now looking down on all of us. It may not feel like he is here, but he lives through our everyday lives. We need to live out his dreams through us. WEIDEN - Stephen J. Weiden, age 66, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, August 25, 2012, following a short illness. Steve was born and raised in Fremont, MI. He was a Hope College graduate and served his country in the U.S. Army for six years, including a deployment to Korea. Following his military service, Steve served the people of Michigan as a social worker for 42 years. A lifetime bachelor, he dedicated himself to his parents, brothers and their families. He was very active in the life of John Knox Presbyterian Church, and spent his leisure time enjoying the theater and musical arts. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Edwin. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his mother, Laura Weiden, his brothers, Roger (Carol), Kendall (Jan), Jeffrey (Peg), Michael (M. K.) Weiden; eight nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews, as well as his aunts, uncles, and cousins. The Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 4150 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, with Pastor Mike Baynai officiating. THORNTON - Terrance M. Thornton, age 59, died Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Hospice House of Holland, Holland MI, having succumbed to cancer. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret; parents, Robert and Mary; brother, Thomas Thornton; and sister, Judith DeMink. He is survived by his brothers, Kim Thornton, Wayne and Dianna Thornton, Richard and Debra Thornton, Denny and Kathy Thornton, Michael and Connie Thornton, brother-in-law, Joe DeMink; step children, Lindsey and Todd; loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends. His bright and loving spirit will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to give special thanks to the Family Bonds Cancer Support Group of Metro Health and the wonderful caregivers at Hospice House of Holland. As Terry wished, cremation has taken place. A private memorial is planned.
