Elva Marie Wriker, age 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2004, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born in Williams County, Ohio on November 8, 1913 to Glasion & Edna (Robison) Goshorn.
Marie graduated from Montpelier High School in Montpelier, Ohio in 1932 as a honor student.
On August 26, 1936 she married Wilfred "Duke" Wriker who preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one brother.
Marie is survived by two sons, Wendell (Ethel) Wriker of Hillsdale and Weldon "Shorty" (Pat) Wriker of Jonesville; one sister, Beatrice Helie of Chula Vista CA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
At Marie's request, her body has been donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. There will be a memorial service on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 6:30 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with the Rev. Randy Bennett officiating.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility or the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church.

ETHEL LOUISE BERNSTEIN
December 24, 1929 - January 3, 2004

Ethel Louise Bernstein, age 96 of Jonesville, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2004 at Drews Place of Hillsdale. She was born September 1, 1907 in North Adams to Charles & Belle (Locklin) Bohn. On December 24, 1929 she married Milton Hergert and he preceded her in 1975. She then married Forrest Bernstein and he also preceded her in death.
Ethel was a graduate of North Adams High School and a graduate of Ypsilanti Normal, with a B.A. in teaching. She then taught at Williams Elementary in Jonesville until retirement in 1964. She was a member of the Jonesville First Presbyterian Church, charter member of the Moscow Plains Study Group and was a member of the Social Thursday Club.
Ethel is survived by a daughter, Naomi (George) Gochanour of Litchfield and a son, Nolan (Shirley) Hergert of Hillsdale. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Along with both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
The funeral for Ethel Bernstein will be held, Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Rev. Gary Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the Moscow Plains cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 7, 2004 from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may contribute to that of the donor's choice.

DONALD B. STEWART
July 14, 1913 - December 28, 2003

Donald B. Stewart age 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday December 28, 2003 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 14, 1913 to Burt & Inis (Haggerty) Stewart.
Mr. Stewart was a mechanical engineer and retired from the Foster Wheeler Corporation in New Jersey. He graduated from Baldwin High School in Birmingham, Michigan in 1932, and also graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 1936. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, and was a member of the Hillsdale Kiwanis Club, Hillsdale Golf & Country club, and the Hillsdale College Presidents Club.
Mr. Stewart is survived by cousins, Betty Cunningham of Hudson, Louise Delcamp of Adrian, Roberta Ellis of Hudson, and Marjorie Pinkham of St. Petersburg, Fl.
Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, R. Joy Stewart in 1993.
There will be a visitation Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Interment will take place Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Greenwood cemetery in Birmingham.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hillsdale College.

DONAVAN J. BUMPUS
January 31, 1910 - December 30, 2003

Donavan J. Bumpus, age 93, of Osseo, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at his home. He was born January 31, 1910 in Bryan, Ohio to J.V. & Gertrude (Eitel) Bumpus.
Donavan retired from Tecumseh Products in 1975 after 29 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII, a 36 year member of the American Legion Post # 0007 of Clearwater, Florida, the Wall Drug Club of South Dakota, the Crazy Horse Grass Roots Club of Black Hills, South Dakota.
He was married May 14, 1932 to Ruth Margarite Strine and she preceded in death Nov. 23, 2003. Surviving are two daughters, Donna (Willis) Howard of Osseo and Jean Stover of Hudson; granddaughter, Darlene (Carl) Blankenship of Hillsdale; special caregivers, grandson, Shawn Porter; granddaughter, Darlene Blankenship and his sister, Alberta Brainerd. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren; sisters LaMoille Salisbury of Coldwater, Alberta Brainerd of Hillsdale; brother, Clarence C. Bumpus of Epoufette, MI.
Along with his wife Ruth, Donovan was preceded by 2 grandchildren Renee J. Mohr and Christopher R. Balnkenship; 2 brothers Forrest A. Bumpus and Homer H. Bumpus; a half sister Mae V. Donner and half brother Roy D. Rearick.
There will be a memorial service held 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 3, 2004
At the Osseo United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Lee and Pastor Bobby Jones officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Churches Corners cemetery. There will be no funeral home calling hours. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make a donation to the Osseo United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home, Hillsdale.

Dorothy E. Letendre
September 10, 1911 - May 21, 2004

Dorothy E. Letendre, age 92, of Allen passed away Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born September 10, 1911 in Cleveland, Ohio to Vernon B. & Louise M. (Kaldenback) Rollins On August 25, 1934 she married Hector C. Letendre in Highland Park, MI and he preceded her on November 13, 2003.
Dorothy has lived in Allen since 1947 where she was active in the Allen Pythian Sisters Lodge for well over 25 years, served as the Allen Township treasurer, and also helped run Spring Valley Service with her husband, Hector.
She is survived by a son, John B. (Catherine) Letendre of Sherwood, Michigan; 3 grandchildren, Robert Letendre of Angola, Indiana, Mark Letendre of Coldwater and Nicole Skaggs of Kokomo, Indiana; and 8 great grandchildren.
She was preceded by her parents, husband Hector, a sister, Lois H. Rollins, and a brother, Quentin V. Rollins.
The funeral service for Dorothy Letendre will be Monday, May 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Rev. Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow in the Allen cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 23, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make a donation to the Allen Pythian Sisters Lodge.

Donald D. Devenport
August 10, 1918 - May 7, 2004

Donald D. Devenport, age 85, of Hillsdale and formerly of Osseo, passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born August 10, 1918 in Ransom Twp., Michigan to S. Delmer & Bertha M. (Keck) Devenport.
Donald was a longtime principal, superintendent, and teacher at North Adams High School. He was also a football, basketball and baseball coach at North Adams. He was a graduate of Hillsdale High School, Huntington College in Indiana and received a masters degree from University of Michigan. He was a lifelong farmer, had previously worked at Allied Products, was a former member of the Lions Club and a former trustee of Jefferson Twp., a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was married June 9, 1940 to Kathryn Boner and she survives. Also surviving are sons, Kent Devenport of Osseo, Lynn (Jill) Devenport of Norman, Oklahoma and Bret (Lori) Devenport of North Hampton, New Hampshire; 5 grandchildren, Karissa Robinson, Kimberly Vincent, Kraig, Kinsey and Taylor Devenport; 8 great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Donald Devenport will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Daniel Pann officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove cemetery in Jefferson Twp. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the North Adams High School Locker Room Building Fund.

Catherine A. "Cathy" Carpenter
January 24, 1960 - May 30, 2004

Catherine A. "Cathy" Carpenter, age 44, of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004 at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born January 24, 1960 in Morenci, Michigan to Mahlon & Pearl (Pulsipher) Johnson.
Cathy was a teacher's aide at Williams Elementary in Jonesville and attended the Jonesville Presbyterian Church. She also cared for the nursery at the church.
She was married October 31, 1983 to Richard Carpenter and he survives. Also surviving are children, Jessica and Eric Carpenter, both at home; three sisters, Connie (Gene) Morgan of Indiana, Cindy Johnson of Ohio and Carol Richardson of Georgia; five brothers, Chris and Charlie of Michigan, Calvin of Ohio, Curtis of California and Clifford (Michelle) Johnson of Adrian.
Memorial services for Cathy Carpenter will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Rev. Gary Oliver officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at the North Dover cemetery in Clayton, Michigan. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Clifford W. Sutton
November 23, 1899 - May 8, 2004

Clifford W. Sutton, age 104, of Meridian Rd. Waldron, Michigan passed away Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold, Ohio. He was born on November 23, 1899, in Chesterfield Township, Ohio to Herbert F. and Viola (Powers) Sutton. He married Herma F. Sayers on December 25, 1923, and she preceded him in death on October 30, 1999.
Clifford was a life long farmer and retired from Wauseon Woodworking in 1973 with over 14 years in the carpentry service. He was the oldest surviving Fayette High School graduate, Class of 1917, and was a member of Fayette United Methodist Church. Clifford and his wife, Herma wintered in Bradenton, Florida and they enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling together.
Surviving Clifford is one daughter, Janice (Ralph) Figgins, one son, Wendell (Margaret) Sutton all of Fayette; four grandchildren, Melinda (Bill) Payne of Clyde, Ohio, Timothy (Carol) Figgins of Fayette, Luann Bacon of Fayette and Karen (Milton) Whitmer of Maumee, Ohio; ten great grandchildren, Lesley, Joel, Miles, Jared, Mallory, Tyler, Treasure, Rachael, Rebekah and Jared, one great great grandson, Caleb. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services for Clifford Sutton will be Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Fayette, Ohio with Rev. James Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove cemetery in Morenci. Visitation will be Monday, May 10, 2004 from 4-8 p.m.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to Fayette United Methodist Church or charity of donor's choice.
