Marie F. Lafollette, age 93, of Hudson, Michigan passed away Friday, April 23, 2004, at the home of her son, Rodney in Lima Ohio. She was born October 3, 1910, in Van Wert, Ohio to Andrew and Goldie (Cooper) Bowers.
Marie retired from Tri State in Hudson in 1975 with over 28 years of service. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1930 and attended the Pittsford Congregational Church.
Surviving Marie is one son, Rodney (Marge) Lafollette of Lima, Ohio; three sisters, Maxine Benjamin, Alice Kingsley and Phyllis Kiper; five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucy Hammel, Evelyn Billings, Dorothy Salamin, Geraldine Hornbeck; three brothers, Harold, Carl and Lester Bowers.
Memorial services for Marie will be Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. at the Pittsford Congregational Church with visitation from 1:00 p.m. til service time. Local arrangements were entrusted to Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson.

Harold F. Larder
August 3, 1928 - May 6, 2004

Harold F. Larder, also known as "Red" or "Poppo", age 75, of Jonesville, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004, at his home. He was born in Homer on August 3, 1928, to Floyd & Mary (Chamberlain) Larder.
Harold was a steel worker employed at Gale Manufacturing of Albion for 15 years, Midwest Foundry in Coldwater for 5 years, Simpson Stamping of Litchfield for 5 years, HTM Jonesville Division, and MAC Steel of Jackson for 14 years. With his wife Lena he owned and operated the Mecca Snack Bar in Litchfield for 8 years, worked at the Cutty Sark Resturant, and mowed many yards. Harold traveled around the U.S. and Canada on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle, was a member of the Hillsdale Bicentenial Car Club; but his most important accomplishment was his family.
He was married April 1, 1946 to Helena Badger and she survives. Also surviving are daughters, Brenda (Robert) Majerczyk of Lake Lee Ann, Michigan and Shirlie (J.D.) Watson of Hanover; a son, Dannie (Jane) Larder of Jonesville; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Jean (William) Edwards of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Cole and a brother in infancy.
Funeral services for Harold Larder will be Monday, May 10, 2004 at 2:00 p.m., at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow at the Mosherville cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lacey M. "Bud" Henson
June 26, 1917 - May 13, 2004

Lacey M. "Bud" Henson, age 86, of Pittsford, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born on June 26, 1917 in Bryson City, North Carolina to Emanuel and Nancy (Freeman) Henson.
Lacey was a retired farmer. On October 21, 1939 he married Donna Finch she survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Norma Gordon of Hillsdale; and a son Brian Henson of Pittsford; three grandchildren, Theresa (Joel) Avery of Kalamazoo, Mark Embach serving in the U.S. Army, and Shauna Gordon of Hillsdale.
Lacey is preceded in death by his parents, and thirteen brothers and sisters.
Graveside services for Lacey will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Leonardson cemetery in Pittsford, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, May 17, 2004 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.

Mary Henrietta Mowry Downer
October 25, 1914 - May 14, 2004

Mary Henrietta Mowry Downer was born to Leon Daniel Mowry and May Pixley Mowry on October 25, 1914 in Morenci, Michigan. She attended elementary school in a small school house on Union Street. Her favorite class was music, which was taught by Leo Bess Chappell. Mary then attended Morenci High School where she always made the Honor Roll. She graduated cum laude from Adrian College with a major in English. Mary was a member of the French Club and was President one year. She joined Delta Delta Delta Sorority and remained active in it her entire life. She taught English and Latin in Sand Creek where she met her furture husband, Lawrence Clark Downer, another Sand Creek teacher. They eventually tied the knot in Angola, Indiana on July 7, 1948.
Mary's first two children, Grace Kathryn and Thomas Daniel were born in Grand Rapids and her third child, Nancy May, was born in Lansing. The family moved to Palo Alto, California in 1960. Mary was blessed with two grandchildren, Clark Daniel Downer and Claire Hayes Downer. She is survived by all of her children and grandchildren.
Mary was a member of the First Congregational Church, The Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Gamma Club of Palo Alto.
The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Siloi Schwenke, who was Mary's caregiver. Her loving heart and gentle manner made mother's last days ones of peace and comfort.
You may be gone from our sight, Mommy, but we will love you and cherish your memory all the days of our lives.
Visitation for Mary Downer will be Friday, May 21, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci, Michigan. Graveside services will be Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove cemetery in Morenci, Michigan.

Marian Evelyn Nott

Marian Evelyn Nott, age 97, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, May 3, 2004, at Drew's Village Green in Hillsdale. She was born December 25, 1906 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Fred E. & Lula (Patterson) Perkins.
Marian was a kindergarten teacher, retiring from Mauck School in Hillsdale. She had also taught in Plymouth, South Lyon, Camden-Frontier and Allen, Michigan. Mrs. Nott received her bachelor degree from Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale and a life member of the A.A.U.W., a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Hillsdale Garden Club.
She was married December 25, 1934 to William Nott and he preceded her in death in 1970. Surviving is a daughter, Helen (Bruce) Berndt of Urbana, Illinois; a son, Fred (Jane) Nott of Bryan, Ohio; six grandchildren, Margaret Nott of New Glarus, Wisconsin, Rev. Kristin (Berndt) Godlin and husband George of Greenwich, Connecticut, Catherine (Nott) Blackwell and husband Jeff of Austin, Texas, Dr. Sonja Berndt of Crofton, Maryland, Mary Nott of Toledo, Ohio and Brooks Berndt of Berkeley, California; one great grandchild, Anne Godlin.
Burial for Marian Nott will take place on Tuesday, May 5, 2004, at the Oak Hill cemetery in Pontiac, Michigan. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception immediately following, at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Curtis Jensen officiating.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to Trigeminal Neurology Association, the Salvation Army of Hillsdale or the A.A.U.W. Scholarship Fund.

Sheldon L. "Shel" Dexter
July 19, 1936 - June 1, 2004

Sheldon L. "Shel" Dexter, age 67, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born July 19, 1936 in Mt. Kisco, New York to Patrick & Louise (Paustian) McCarthy.
Shel had been the co-owner and operator of Winners Circle Yamaha since 1978. He was an avid motocross rider and supported motocross riding as a family orientated activity. He was also a former member of the U.S. Air Force.
He was married December 17, 1957 to Phoebe Brooks and she survives. Also surviving are four sons, Lonney of Denver, Co., Rick, David (Robin), both of Hillsdale and Tim (Ann) of Ashley, Indiana; two grandchildren, Danielle & Kaitlyn Dexter of Elkton, Maryland; two sisters, Shirley Barnett of Phoenix, Arizona and Virginia (Jim) Ianaconne of North Husdon, New York; three brothers, Robert (Jan) McCarthy of Lynn, Oregon, Patrick (Dorothy) McCarthy of Spring, Texas and Richard McCarthy of Norwalk, Conneticut; there are also many nieces, nephews and close friends surviving.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial reception for Shel Dexter on Saturday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to the charity of the donor's choice.

Woodrow W. Huston
May 25, 1918 - May 31, 2004

Woodrow W. Huston, age 86, of Jonesville and formerly of Hillsdale passed away Monday, May 31, 2004 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born May 25, 1918 in Montpelier, Ohio to Edward & Carrie (Hawley) Huston.
Woody retired from M & S Manufacturing, was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hillsdale, a 50 year member of the Pythians and a member of the Hillsdale American Legion.
He was married to LaVera Delcamp and she preceded him in death in 1984. He later married Ruth Ladd and she survives. Also surviving are 3 step-daughters, Shireen (Anthony) Scally of Knoxville, Tennessee, Gayle (Darrell) Swanson of Richland, Michigan and Lori (Jim) Pietruszka of Hillsdale; stepsons, Martin (Martha) Ladd of Litchfield and David (Sandy) Ladd of Jonesville; daughter-in-law, Carol Huston Ambrose; two grandchildren, Mark Huston of Royal Oak and Matt (Aletha) Huston of Hillsdale; great granddaughter, Amber Huston; 10 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Westfall of Camden, Eva Hand and Hazel Huston, both of Montpelier, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife LaVera, his son, Rodney Huston, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services for Woodrow Huston will be Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Rev. Don Harkey officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakeview cemetery in Hillsdale. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Philip L. Norton
March 10, 1932 - May 29, 2004

Philip L. Norton, age 72, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 10, 1932 in Garrett, Indiana to Kenneth & Ruth (Enbody) Norton.
Philip retired from H.T.M. in Jonesville and had worked for A.D.A. Security. He was a was lifelong fisherman and enjoyed hunting.
He was married September 22, 1961 to Mary Alice Press and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Catherine (Van) Muehlfeld of Blakeslee, Ohio, Shelly (Robert) Snow of Jonesville and Barbara Traxler of Adrian; a son, William (Linda) Close of Kentucky; three brothers, Blaine Norton of Litchfield, Roger Norton of Hillsdale and Galen Norton of Orlando, Florida; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Douglas.
Funeral services for Philip Norton will be Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. August Peters officiating. Interment will follow at the Ray cemetery in Ray, Indiana. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph G. Hatcliff
April 8, 1904 - May 7, 2004

Ralph G. Hatcliff, age 100, of Cynthia Dr., Fayette, Ohio passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon, Ohio. He was born April 8, 1904, Thayer, Neosho County, Kansas, to Lewis G. and Jesse (Drew) Hatcliff. He married Hattie Bruch in 1924 and she preceded him in death in 1954. He then married Frances Steinsiek and she preceded him in death in 1963, and then he married Thelma Wilson and she preceded him in death in 1999.
Ralph was a school teacher and principal in Kansas, North Carolina and Arkansas for 50 years; serving as principal at Big Cove Indian School on the Cherokee Indian Reservation for 29 years. He received a B.A. Degree from Kansas Teachers College in Pittsburgh, Kansas, and a Masters Degree from Boulder University in Boulder Colorado. He served as a Boy Scout Master in Kansas and North Carolina and taught Sunday school until he was 91 years of age. Ralph was member of Fayette Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving Ralph are two sons, Earl R. (Lydia) Hatcliff of Oak Harbor, Washington, Winston (Debby) Hatcliff of Fayette one step-son Glen Wilson of Del Rio, Texas; four grandchildren, Patricia Hatcliff, Richard Hatcliff, John Mark (Lori) Hatcliff and Lois (Mike) Justice; six great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, three wives, one sister, Reva Glentzer and two brothers, Merle Hatcliff and Dale Hatcliff.
Funeral services for Ralph G. Hatcliff will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Fayette Church of the Nazarene. Interment will follow at Fairview cemetery in Cherryvale, Kansas at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2004. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Fayette Church of the Nazarene and Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.
