He worked in the coal mines of the western panhandle of West Virginia, where he met his wife, Mary Adeline Fenoglio. They were married there November 7, 1936.

Although he was a miner and an industrial worker, his heart was in the country.

He took great pleasure in his retirement to rural Michigan, he loved the forests, lakes, and fields. He loved to fish, and on his 3-acres, cultivated a variety and abundance of produce, growing figs and grafting other fruit trees, making wine from his own grapes, sharing the fruits of his labor with his family and friends, and overstocking the basement freezers.

His older daughter Elaine Marie Kinch has lived in Racine for many years. His younger daughter Sister Ana "Linda" Marzolo is a member of the Marist Missionary Sisters and has worked in Lima, Peru since 1967.
