Hattie May Houtz, age 83, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at The Laurels of Coldwater. She was born January 10, 1922 in Oscota, Michigan to Gordon & Sebrina (Matson) Goodman.

Hattie had been a resident of The Laurels the past 18 months and attended the Hillsdale Baptist Church.

She was married May 30, 1953 to John Wallace Houtz and he preceded her in death in 1993. Surviving are daughters, Jennie Arend of Jackson, Wanda Cramer of Gladwin, Alice (John) Stemen of Allen and Judy Westfall of Hillsdale; sons, John (Mary) Houtz and Jerry (Bonnie) Houtz, both of Hillsdale; sister, Shirley Meyers of Illinois; brother, Bill Nelson of Lowell; 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, JoAnn Barnett.

Funeral services for Hattie May Houtz will be Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Dan Pann officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove cemetery in Hillsdale. Visitation will be Wednesay, March 23, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to The Laurels of Coldwater.

Gertrude Duncan
April 10, 1921 - March 3, 2005

Visitation: Saturday, March 5, 2005, from 3-5 p.m.
Service: Sunday, March 6, 2005, 2:00 p.m.

Gertrude Mae Duncan, age 83, of Hillsdale and formerly of Hudson, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005, under the loving care of the nurses and staff at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility, surrounded by her family. She was born April 10, 1921 in Hillsdale County to Frank & Tillie (Haines) Rose. She was married to Romie Duncan and he preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1962.

Gertrude was a former nurses aide, a resident of the Hudson area all her life, and a member of the Open Door Bible Church in Hudson.

Survivors include daughters, Janet Duncan of Molena, Goergia, Linda (Gary) Richardson of Tucson, Arizona and Sandra Sheldon of Addison, Texas; sons, David (Julie) Duncan of Hillsdale, Larry (Susan) Duncan of Olney, Illinois and Randy Duncan of Grand Rapids, Mi.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Shirley Norton, five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services for Gertrude Duncan will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m., at the Open Door Bible Church in Hudson with Pastor Larry Duncan officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove cemetery in Jefferson Twp., Michigan. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility.

Gay A. Bretthauer
August 1, 1906 - April 1, 2005

Gay Bretthauer, age 98, formerly of Lincoln Street, Morenci passed away Friday, April 1, 2005, at the Fulton Manor in Wauseon, Ohio. She was born on August 7, 1906 in Stryker, Ohio the daughter of John & Nettie (Scheer) Murbach. On December 24, 1926, in Stryker, Ohio she married Loren Bretthauer. He preceded her in death on February 2, 1974.

Gay graduated from Stryker High School. She was a homemaker living in the Morenci and Munson area since 1926. After moving to Morenci she attended the Morenci Baptist Church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Maurice Bretthauer of Wooster, Ohio and Carol Sloan of Stryker, Ohio. Besides her husband, Loren, Gay was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lawrence and Clair Murbach.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Rev. Don Sunman officiating. Burial will follow at the Floral Grove cemetery near West Unity, Ohio. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Morenci Baptist Church or to a charity of donor's choice.

Frances D. "Fran" Mielke
November 3, 1942 - March 2, 2005

Visitation: Sunday, March 6, 2005 from 2-4 p.m., Prayer Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. with Visitation to Follow until 8:00 p.m.

Francis D. "Fran" Mielke, age 62, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born November 3, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Thaddeus and Theodora (Gawrych) Piarowski.

Fran was an art teacher operating Fran's Country Palette. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, a member of the National Association of Tole Painters, the National Society of Decorative Painters, the Heart of Michigan Decorative Artists, a member of "HOOP" the Heart of Ohio Pole, a member of "BSAG", the Black Swamp Art Guild of Williams Co. and the Three Rivers Decorative Artists.

She was married January 23, 1965 to Lawrence Mielke and he survives. Also surviving are daughters, Kathy (Jeff) Bart of Grand Rapids and Karen (Michael) Horn of Hillsdale; sons, Tim (Lisa) Mielke of Republic, Missouri and Rob Mielke of Muncie, Indiana; one grandchild, three step grandchildren and one step great grandchild; sister, Victoria (John) Goudy of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a brother, Tom (Claire) Piarowski of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, March 7, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Fr. Thomas Butler as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Anthony cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and a prayer vigil service at 6:00 p.m., with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Hillsdale.

Frances DeWulf
May 20, 1916 - March 2, 2005

Frances DeWulf, age 88, of West Unity, Ohio passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Heartland of Wauseon. She was born May 20, 1916 in Metamora, Ohio to John and Frances (Brablec) Hudik. Frances was married November 23, 1938 to Leo DeWulf and he preceded her in death on December 31, 1999.

Frances was a member of the Olive Branch Christian Union Church in Fayette and was a resident of this area all her life.

Surviving are three daughters, Maryann Heximer of Defiance, Sherry DeWulf of West Unity and Christine Hierholzer of Lewisburg, Tennessee; two sons, Edward (Cathy) DeWulf and Larry DeWulf, both of Fayette; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and a sister.

Funeral services for Frances DeWulf will be Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Fayette with Pastor Joseph Redmond officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant View Union cemetery in Fayette. The family will receive friends Friday, March 4, 2005 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Fayette.

Ellen E. Kennedy
June 25, 1922 - March 31, 2005

Ellen E. Kennedy, age 82, of Jackson, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday May 31, 2005 at the Trellis Gardens Assisted Living in Jackson. She was born on June 25, 1922 in Jonesville to William and Lulu Mae (Snyder) Hoag.

Ellen was co-owner of K-Gardens in Hillsdale with her husband Sammy until their retirement. She graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1940.

On April 25, 1948 she married Sammy Kennedy who preceded her in death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

At the request of Ellen, cremation has taken place. There will be no services. Interment will follow at a later date at the Allen cemetery in Allen.

Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.

Edward C. Kendra
December 13, 1957 - March 30, 2005

Edward C. Kendra, age 47, of W. Church Street, West Unity, Ohio passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in Mill Creek Township, Ohio. He was born December 13, 1957 in Lansing, Michigan to Joseph and Alice (Cvetkovich) Kendra.

Edward was previously employed at Trim Trends in Bryan, Ohio. He was a member Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Church in Morenci, Michigan and graduated from Monroe High School in 1976.

Surviving Edward are four children; Monica Kendra, Andrea Kendra, Aaron Kendra and Brandon Kendra all of West Unity; his mother, Alice Kendra of Monroe, Michigan; mother of his children, Lupe McKinsey of West Unity; three grandchildren, Alexandria, Valincia and Aden. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Kendra.

Memorial services for Edward C. Kendra will be Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral in Fayette, Ohio with Mr. Mike Vanderveer officiating. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time.

Donald R. Munsell
July 25, 1922 - April 3, 2005

Donald R. Munsell, age 82, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek. He was born on July 25, 1922 in Jonesville, to William and Neva (Monsell) Munsell.

Donald was the former owner of Micro Tool in Hillsdale. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a Rifleman with the 16th Infantry Regimont of the 29th Infantry Division. He was in the first wave of the landing at Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He was wounded twice, awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for valor for involvement a mission behind enemy lines to capture a German officer. He was a member of the American Legion Leighr A. Wright Post No. 53 in Hillsdale and the D.A.V.

On July 25, 1943 he married LaVaun Sowers who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Cheryl) Munsell of Hillsdale, Jeffery Munsell of Hillsdale; one sister Ruth Draper of Jonesville; six grandchildren, Jason, Emily, Jeremy, MaggiAnn, Laura, and Shane; and seven great-grandchidren.

Donald was preceded in death by two daughters, Patricia Spratt in 1984, and Sara Munsell in 1997, two brothers, and his parents.

A memorial graveside service for Donald Munsell will be Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeview cemetery in Hillsdale with Pastor Lester Smith officiating. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Those who are planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Charity of Donor's Choice.

Calvin J. Schoonover
January 23, 1962 - March 19, 2005

Calvin Schoonover, age 43, of North Depot Street, Stryker, Ohio passed away Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Bryan Community Hospital in Bryan, Ohio. He was
born on January 23, 1962 in Morenci the son of Calvin "Jimmy" & Patricia (Gardner) Schoonover.

Calvin was a graduate of Morenci High School in 1980. He joined the US Air Force after graduating and served until 1985.

Survivors include his mother, Patricia Schoonover, of Morenci; two sons, Bradley & Jacob; and a brother, Cecil John Schoonover of Morenci. Calvin was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father, "Jimmy".

Funeral services will be held at the Morenci Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rick Puckett officiating. There will be no visitation or viewing. Burial will be private at Oak Grove cemetery in Morenci.

Arrangements were handled through the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci.
