Janice M. Paige, 68, of Jonesville passed away Monday, February 9, 2009 at Battle Creek Health System. She was born May 1, 1940 in Hudson to Dale & Dorothy (Mohr) Swander. She was married November 12, 1961 to Ralph Paige and he survives.

Janice was a 1958 graduate of Hudson High School. She was a former member of Locust Corners Baptist Church in Waldron and Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsdale.

Surviving besides her husband Ralph are two daughters, Pam (Scott) Caldwell of Jonesville and Lisa Smith of Brooklyn; a son Bryan (Shelly) Paige of Jonesville; two sisters, Marilyn (Terry) Helmick and Lois (Gale) Nye both of Jonesville; four brothers Carl (Wanda) Swander and Denny (Betty) Swander both of Florida, Don (Kay) Swander of Tennessee and Wayne (Shirley) Swander of Jonesville; ten grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services for Janice M. Paige will be Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Pastor Les Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Northlawn cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to the United Brethren Church in Hillsdale.

Arthur M. Fiebig
July 13, 1924 - February 25, 2009

Arthur M. Fiebig, age 84, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida. His health had been declining since Christmas and he peacefully departed on Ash Wednesday to spend Eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His wife and son were at his side.

Arthur was born on July 13, 1924 in Sebewaing, Michigan. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII aboard the USS Rocky Mount, General MacArthur's communication ship. He was one of the men who transmitted MacArthur's historic words; "I will return." and "I have returned." near the Philippines.

After the War, Arthur attended the Kansas City School of Watchmaking. Upon graduation, he married Ila Armbruster and in 1949 they purchased a jewelry store in Jonesville, Michigan. In 1979 they acquired a second store with Jim and JoAnn Fiebig in Sturgis and owned both locations until their retirement in 1986. Fiebig Jewelers, Inc. in Sturgis was sold to Brad Rockey in 2005 and continues today.

Arthur was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and often played the organ there. He was a fifty year member of Lions Club and received a Lion's highest honor; the Melvin Jones Award in 2007. Art was a long time member of the American Legion and served as Jonesville Village President in the 1960's.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma (Gremel) Fiebig, one brother Carl and one sister Lorna Fiebig Highducheck. He is survived by his oldest brother Edgar and his youngest brother, Raymond. He is also survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ila, son James Arthur Fiebig, daughter-in-law JoAnn (Gilchrist) Fiebig, grandsons Chad Nettleman and Jared Arthur Fiebig, and one great granddaughter, Alaina Mae.

Funeral services for Art Fiebig will be Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul's cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until services at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. There will be a meal served following graveside services at St. Paul's.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale County Community Foundation.

Bernice M. Tobey
August 13, 1925 - March 18, 2009

Bernice M. Tobey, 83, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. She was born August 13, 1925 in Warren, Michigan to Charles & Bertha (Sorenson) Robidue. She was married August 29, 1953 to Thomas Tobey and he preceded her in death in 1992.

Bernice was a member of the Jonesville Presbyterian Church and a long-time resident of Jonesville.

Surviving are three children, Laurie (Bruce) Raeburn of Shorewood, Illinois, Christine (Larry Lapeer) Tobey of Caneyville, Kentucky, and Brian (Beth) Tobey of Florence, Kentucky. Five grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Rosemary Darden. Memorial services for Bernice Tobey will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation or calling hours at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Allegiance Diabetes Care, 817 W. High St., Jackson, Mi. 49203.

Charles Leo Gibbs Sr.
December 1, 1946 - February 27, 2009

Charles L. Gibbs, 62, of Pittsford, Michigan passed away, Friday, February 27, 2009, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born December 1, 1946, in Hudson, Michigan the daughter of Robert A. and Barbara J. (Van Akin) Gibbs.

Surviving Charles are three daughters, Dawn Gibbs, Billie Gibbs and Angie Cook all of Hillsdale; three sons, Charles L. Gibbs Jr., Robert Gibbs and Porter (Brandy) Gibbs all of Hillsdale, ten grandchildren, and one sister, Sue (Jim) Jones of Morenci, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside memorial service for Charles will be Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Grove cemetery in Hudson. There will be no visitation hours. Arrangements were entrusted to Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson. Those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to the family and envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Connie C. Paxson
January 1, 1941 - March 9, 2009

Connie C. Paxson, 68, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 at her home. She was born January 1, 1941 in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico to Julian & Romanita (Martinez) Torres. She was married in 1958 to Roman Irizarry and he preceded her in death in 1986. She was married July 6, 1983 to Gary Paxson and he survives.

Surviving besides her husband Gary are two daughters, Marie Carter Gomez of Archbold, Ohio and Leslie (Milton) Hoffman of Addison; a son, Raymond Irizarry of Findlay, Ohio; eighteen brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Connie was also preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers.

Funeral services for Connie C. Paxson will be Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Pann officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends for visitation Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to the Paxson family.

Darrel F. Carlisle
June 3, 1921 - March 19, 2009

Darrel F. Carlisle, 87, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, at his home. He was born June 3, 1921 in Jerome, Michigan to Lewis and Mary (Fenstermaker) Carlisle. He was married April 28, 1941 to June Benjamin and she survives.

Darrel was a 35 year employee of Montgomery Ward selling tires in the automotive department. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a recipient of the Purple Heart serving during WWII. He was an active member of the Hillsdale American Legion and a life member of the D.A.V. He was an avid golfer and a former club champion at White Oaks Golf Course in Hillsdale.

Surviving besides his wife June are three daughters, Ruth (John) Fink of Vicksburg, Mary (Ronald) Philipp of Jackson, and Janice Mercs of Climax; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Glen (Sharon) Carlisle of Jonesville and George (Sue) Carlisle of Hillsdale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dora Brown and Judy Mann; and three brothers, Ora, Bob, and Clyde Carlisle.

Funeral Services for Darrel Carlisle will be Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Don Harkey officiating. Interment will follow at the Sand Lake Valley cemetery in Hillsdale Township. The family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Salvation Army or the charity of the donor’s choice.
