ATKINS, WILLIE EUGENE Not everyone lives up to his true potential. Not everyone can. While given his family circumstances, Willie Eugene Atkins could have easily succumbed to a self-limiting future. However, at a very early age, Will Atkins chose to do more than just survive a world rich in potential and littered with peril--he decided to live beyond his dreams. His favorite phrase, "If it s to be, it s up to me", became a guidepost in his remarkable 72-year life filled with achievement. Much of his success came from his penchant to help fulfill the potential of others. It started with family first. The second child of a family of seven, Will was not only a loving Brother, but a friend to sisters, Cleo Duncan, Erna Martin, Eloise Swift, Mardine Bonner, Donnie Tye, Bessie Twymon, Barbara Patton and brother, Philip Atkins. He became a stepfather to three surviving children, Lawrence, Cheryl and Brian Nichols, and loving husband to wife, Barbara Penn Atkins in 1965. While his life was filled with a laudable list of community commitments, his dedication to personal development started and ended at home with his family. Will Atkins launched his remarkably successful professional executive placement firm, BPA Enterprises, in 1972 and with it catapulted the careers of thousands of our country s finest minority executives. The company and its founder, Will Atkins, grew to gain the respect of many Fortune 500 clients including Detroit Edison, Ford Motor Company, Ford Land Development, General Motors, Michigan Bell and Phillip Morris USA. In his 15 year history as a board member of the Michigan Minority Business Development Council, Will Atkins helped many minority companies recruit and retain the type of leaders necessary to sustain their future business growth and to shape advanced minority support systems, policies and practices still in place today. And he helped to launch the career of Michigan s first female licensed master plumber, Adrienne Bennett, and directed many other minority candidates into lucrative--albeit--non-traditional positions in the skilled trade industry. He was appointed to Michigan s State Board of Licensing and Regulations by Governor Blanchard in 1983 and was actively involved in setting the rules, policies and licensing governing employment agencies until 1987. He also helped to found the Young Adult Chapter of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP and remained an active participant throughout his life. Will Atkins played an active role in the visionary effort to launch Detroit s Historic African American Museum of History originally housed on West Grand Blvd. in Detroit. Faith remained an endearing constant throughout his life and was rewarded in his lifelong devotion to biblical study and in his lectures and service at Detroit s New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God and Christ as a singer in its Men s Choir, a counselor on its Men s Bereavement Ministry and in its Church Ministry. He attended the University of Detroit where he was an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and was a graduate of Detroit s Miller High School. One wouldn t expect such achievement from a man who started his professional life equipped only with a desire to achieve and the tools of a broom and mop as a maintenance man at Michigan Bell. With unparalleled dedication, Will dug in his heals, worked hard and stuck to his belief: "If it s to be, it s up to me". His tireless effort was rewarded by a string of promotions over his 25-year history with Bell, who valued his service as an installer and later as its employee relations manager. Will Atkins never did care about the point his journey began. His single-minded focus was always on the end. Family and friends who survive him plan to celebrate his journey and mourn the loss of a good man. Willie Eugene Atkins will lie in state Thursday, April 6 at the Cole Funeral Home located in Detroit at 13631 Puritan Rd. at Schaefer. Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Friday, April 7 at a 10 a.m. family hour followed by an 11 a.m. service at Detroit s New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God and Christ located at 15340 Southfield Dr. (near Fenkell and Grand River Ave.). Entombment is set at the Woodlawn cemetery located at 19975 Woodward Ave. in the City of Detroit. Those wishing to extend their sympathies are asked to donate funds to the Gamma Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Education Foundation. Donations can be mailed in memory of Willie E. Atkins name to: P.O. Box 441763, Detroit, MI 48224-1763.
