FUNK, JOSEPH CYRUS, Age 73, of Lake Street, Cassopolis, MI died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002 at Hospice House, South Bend, IN following an extended illness. Mr. Funk was born July 11, 1928 in Niles, MI to Leland Ritter and Helen (Pierson) Funk and lived at Diamond Lake since 1977, coming from W. Bloomfield, MI. He was a member of the Niles High School Class of 1946 and was a thirteen time Viking Letterman excelling in track, basketball, football and baseball. Mr. Funk was a star quarterback for the Olivet College Comets under former Niles Head Grid Coach Frank Ham, earning many varsity letters while at Olivet and landing him in the College Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Funk was a member of the Olivet College Class of 1950. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Air Force and retired in 1981 after 28 years as an Accounting Manager in charge of banking with Chrysler Corp., in Detroit. An avid golfer, Mr. Funk defeated his brother Dan for the Niles City Championship in 1951. He was very active in the Cass Area Utilities Assn., a committee instrumental in bringing public sewers to Diamond Lake. On August 12, 1950, in Ferndale, MI, he married the former Mary Jo Kelly who died February 22, 1996. A son, Thomas Funk, preceded him in death on December 19, 1998. He is survived by his children, Robert Funk of Port Huron, MI and Nancy Mularski of Rochester Hills, MI, eight grandchildren, a companion, Frances Smith-Williams of Cassopolis, sisters Ellen J. Funk of Niles and Martha Helen Mennucci of South Bend and brothers Donald P. Funk of Altamonte, FL and Leland P. Funk of Niles. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2002 at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Reverend Ira L. Fett of Cassopolis officiating. Interment will be at Prospect Hill cemetery, Cassopolis. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County or the Leukemia Society of America.

LECZNAR, EDWARD F. (WHITEY) April 11, 2002, age 82. Beloved husband of Rose. Devoted father of Michael (Ellen), Judy Lundberg (John), and Mark (Patricia). Loving grandfather of Timothy, Jeffrey, Brian, Philip and Alicia. He was particularly proud that his children received college degrees, and his grandchildren are pursuing advanced degrees. He was a WW II Combat Infantryman who was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on the battlefield of France in 1944. He was a journeyman for Ford Motor Co. for 30 years and a proud UAW Member. An avid gardener, Whitey battled Crows for 40 years to win control of his precious back yard apple trees.
