SCHOAPS, MARIA RITA 73, of Clinton Twp., Mich., died early Sunday morning, Feb. 22, at her vacation home in Garden, S.C. She was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Palestro, Italy, the daughter of the late Amadeo and Mercedes Zumaglini. She was raised and educated in Italy, where she met her husband-to-be, an American soldier, during World War II. They were married in 1949 in Cagliari, Italy. She moved to the U.S. in 1952 with her husband and young son and settled in the Detroit area. She was a homemaker and sales associate before retiring to spend more time with her daughter s family and grandchild in the Carolinas. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Ed Schoaps, a retired employee of the Detroit Free Press Circulation Department; a son, Ed, (Dino) Schoaps, of Salem, OR; a daughter, Mercedes Cosgrove, of Clemmons, N.C.; a brother Giuseppino Zumaglini, of Milan, Italy; and one grandchild, John Elliot Cosgrove, of Clemmons, N.C. A memorial service will be held in Clinton Township at a later date.
