Dirk Wesseldyk, 88

Allegan lost a lifelong resident Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, when Dirk Wesseldyk left his earthly body to join his Heavenly Father in his eternal home. Given his deep-seated love of God, family thought it fitting that his passing occurred on the same day we celebrated the resurrection of his Savior.

Dirk, 88, began his journey in this world Jan. 7, 1918, when he was born to Dirk Sr. and Dena Wesseldyk in the home in which he continued to reside until the time of his passing.

In April 1939 at the age of 21, Dirk met Marian Reed, who had come to work for Dirk's mother. The couple spent the next 16 months getting to know each other before getting married June 14, 1940. Thus began a partnership that spanned nearly 66 wonderful years.

Never one of to shy away from the sweat that came from hard work, Dirk subscribed to the mantra of "an honest day's work for an honest day's pay." And as a true jack-of-all-trades, that work included time as a painter and as a heating and cooling technician. His longest standing position was at Allegan General Hospital, where he served as superintendent of grounds and maintenance for more than 13 years.

In spite of his hard-working nature, Dirk was always one who viewed his job as what he did, not who he was. In other words, his work did not define him.

What defined Dirk was a love of family and God.

A longtime member of First Baptist Church in Allegan, Dirk looked forward each week to Sunday mornings when he could join fellow believers in a time of worship. He particularly enjoyed the musical portion of the service and the singing of hymns. In addition, he served as a deacon at Otsego Baptist Church.

In terms of family, Dirk and Marian had a daughter, Rebecca Ann, who passed away as an infant in 1948. Three years later in 1951, Dirk and Marian welcomed son James, who practices veterinary medicine in Kalamazoo, to the family.

In addition to his wife Marian, Dirk is survived by son James H. (Linda) Wesseldyk of South Haven; grandchildren Shane (Brooke) Wesseldyk of Allegan, Jason (Terra) Wesseldyk of Battle Creek, Lisa Wesseldyk of South Haven, Logan Kay Wesseldyk of South Haven and Mark Wesseldyk of South Haven; great-grandchildren Glory, Camden and Colin; four sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents Dirk Sr. and Dena Wesseldyk, daughter Rebecca Ann Wesseldyk, brother Henry Wesseldyk and sister Henrietta Payne.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 21, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at D.L. Miller Funeral Home, 203 E. Spring St., Bloomingdale. The memorial service, officiated by Rev. James Turner, will follow at 11 a.m., with burial taking place at Oakwood cemetery in Allegan. Family and friends are then invited to attend a luncheon at First Baptist Church in Allegan.

Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church, 1290 M-40, Allegan, MI, 49010; Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn St., Ste. A, Allegan, MI, 49010; or Kairos Dwelling, 2945 Gull Rd., Kalamazoo, MI, 49048.

View, Calif., Paula and Rob Hennemuth of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jeff and Sheila Hoshor of Holland and John (Bill) and Kathy Hoshor of Chicago; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; sister-in-law, Joyce Robbins of Chandler, Ariz.; and nephews, nieces and cousins.
