Jacob Omar Ihle, 82

Jacob Omar Ihle, 82, of Saugatuck died Thursday, March 13, 2006, at Heart Land Heath Care of Holland.

Jake was born and raised in Cylinder, Iowa. He moved to East Saugatuck in 1946. He owned several different businesses in the Saugatuck area. He owned and operated the Ihle Service Garage of Saugatuck since 1961. He has owned and operated his family farm in East Saugatuck also since 1946. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church..

He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Ihle, in 1983, and grandson Eric Ihle, in 1971.

His family includes children, Gary and Viola Ihle of Hamilton, Everet and Sue Ihle of Holland, and Peter and Jackie Ihle of Glen; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, John Medbery of Alabama; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were Tuesday at Saugatuck Chapel Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home with the Rev. John Westra officiating. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery in Saugatuck.

Visitation was Monday at Dykstra Funeral Home Saugatuck Chapel, 520 Lake St. in Saugatuck.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or to Holland Home Heath Care..

Catherine 'Kitty' Cassar Hughes, 84

Catherine "Kitty" (NaNa) Cassar Hughes, 84, of Saugatuck Township, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006. She was born on Oct. 21, 1921, in Birkirkara, Malta, to Joseph Cassar and Giovanna Ciantar.

She lived in the Detroit area from 1949 until 1980 when she then moved to Douglas.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Douglas, the Saugatuck Woman's Club, the Saugatuck-Douglas Art Club and the Maltese Society of the Detroit area. She was also involved with Christian Neighbors and Evergreen Commons.

On Oct. 1, 1946, she married Allan Michael Hughes, who preceded her in death on March 30, 1995.

Surviving Kitty are three daughters, Stephen and Tanya Hughes-Sheridan of Saugatuck, Dennis and Helen Hughes-Robbins, of Nashville, Tenn., and Kevin Marin and Catherine Hughes of St. Croix, U.S.V.I.; 10 grandchildren, Brendt Sheridan, Aaron Sheridan, James and Carly Sheridan, Corey Robbins, Trevor Robbins, Monica Marin, Alex Marin, Sean Marin, Mara Marin and Liam Marin; two sisters, Doris Pace and Jane Zammit; one brother, Philip Cassar, all of Malta; sisters-in-law, Marian Cassar of Dearborn Heights and Pat and Dennis Shipley of Saugatuck; and a niece, Denise Shipley and Randy Mellon of Saugatuck.

Preceding her in death were her husband Allan; a brother, Carmel Cassar; and two sisters, Rita Barbara and Marie Walker.

There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be Monday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at the St. Peter's Catholic Church, Douglas. Interment will be at the Riverside cemetery in Saugatuck.

Jacob Kandell, 84

Jacob Kandell, 84, of Plainwell died April 17, 2006. Jacob was born July 18, 1921 in Manistique.

In 1984, he retired as an instructor from the Michigan Career and Technical Institute. He has been a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego since 1951. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus St. Margaret Chapter 7796, VFW Post #3030, and the American Legion. Jacob was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

His family includes his wife Laura; his children, Ron and Connie Kandell of Georgia, Linda and Don Peterson of Portage, Kay Campbell of Otsego, Kathy and Don Collier of Ohio and Susan Kandell of Plainwell; his grandchildren, Jay and Melissa Kandell, Stephen Kandell, Michael Campbell, Christopher Collier and Jenny Collier; his great-grandchildren, Jessica and Mitchel; his sisters, Leola, Julia, Gladys and Marie; his brother Alfred; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends viewed Jacob's life story film and visited with his family and friends Wednesday, April 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, Plainwell, 120 S. Woodhams. Mass of Christian Burial was today (Thursday), April 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego. Jacob was buried at Ft. Custer National cemetery with full military honors.

Anna Mae Towne, 83

Anna Mae Towne, 83, of Plainwell, died at her home Thursday April 12, 2006. She was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Cooper Township the daughter of Herman and Fannie (Engel) Hummel.

She has been a resident of the Plainwell area most of her life. On Oct. 27, 1945, she married Garner Towne, and he survives.

Other members of Anna's family include her children and their spouses, Douglas (Judy) Towne of Portland and Dale (Beverly) Towne of Otsego; grandchildren, Rachel, Samuel and Nora Wintermute and Timothy and Curtis Towne; a brother, Benjamin Hummel of Otsego; and sisters, Marian Ray and Joyce Mills of Otsego and Doris Geiger of Marshall.

Anna was preceded in death by two sisters, Elda VanFleet and Helen Hoovner; and a brother, Charles Hummel.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Friendship Wesleyan Church, 1285 102nd Ave., in Plainwell. Anna will be buried at Ft. Custer National cemetery.

Carlton 'Bill' Andrews, 93

Carlton "Bill" Andrews, 93, of Plainwell died on April 11, 2006, at Borgess Medical Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Martin to Charles and Edna (Pardee) Andrews.

He worked for several years at Angle Steel and later in Parts and Service at Koestner Pontiac until his retirement. He built and helped run the Andrews Trailer Park and helped his father at the Andrews Cider Mill.

Bill attended Wayside Chapel, Grace Bible Church, and Lighthouse Baptist Church. He was a member of the Knights of the Pythians.

On Sept. 14, 1935, he married Fannie Brown.

His family includes his wife, Fannie of Plainwell; children, Linda and William Herold of Greenville and Richard and Dianne Andrews of Plainwell; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Andy Andrews and Walter Andrews.

Friends viewed Bill's Life Story Film and visited with his family on Friday at the Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, 120 S. Woodhams, Plainwell, where his service was Saturday. Roger F. Peters, 63

Mr. Roger F. Peters, 63, of Allegan passed away with his family at his side, April 17, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Deckerville to the late Virgel and Sophie (Konkel) Peters.

On July 2, 1966, he married Judy Spencer. In 1975 he moved from Cass City to Allegan where he owned and operated Allegan hardwood and later Hi-Way Variety.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, woodwork, stockcar racing, horse races, playing poker and bowling. He traveled to the Bahamas and to Canada and Wyoming for hunting.

His grandchildren will always remember the time they spent with Roger cooking and building wood projects. Roger loved to pursue ways to simplify complicated or difficult tasks-often succeeding in making it more complicated or difficult.

He is survived by his wife Judy; sons, Greg (Jody) Peters and Kirk (ShellyJo) Peters; grandchildren, Caleb Peters and Samantha Lynn, all of Allegan; siblings, Patricia (Howard) Kelley of Glennie, Ronald Peters, Dwaine (Helen) Peters and Larry (Harriet) Peters, all of Cass City, Mary Lou Kerr of Bay City and Randy (Julie) Peters of Sherwood; sisters-in-law, Laura Spencer and Dorothy Spencer; brother-in-law, Clinton (Diana) Spencer; many nieces, nephews and cousins; Aunt Marie and Uncle Wally; and special friends, Shirley Lynn of Allegan and Will and Sue Warners of Bloomingdale.

Roger was predeceased by brothers, LaVern Peters and Gordon Peters; sister-in-law, Nancy Peters; brother-in-law; Raymond Spencer; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, June and Wayne Spencer.

Visiting will be Thursday, April 20, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Thabet Funeral Home, 6255 Main St., Cass City and on Friday, April 21, from 10 a.m. until an 11 a.m. service at St. Pancratius Catholic Church, 4292 S. Seeger, Cass City. Burial will be at Novesta Township cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Roger's family to assist with medical expenses.

Francis J. "Frank" Esper, 61

Francis J. "Frank" Esper, 61, of Zeeland, formerly of Otsego, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2006.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Lynda; his blessed children, Cheryl (Jim) Balcom of Schoolcraft, Rene/ (Pete) Yake of Iron Mountain, Simeon Esper (fianc/ Victoria Biehal) of Bielefeld, Germany, Kelly Esper of Kalamazoo, Eric (Beth Christine) Esper of San Diego, Calif., and Miriam (Seth) Ashby of Grand Rapids; his eight adoring grandchildren, Jared, Courtney, Levi and Audrey Balcom, Tyler, Madelyn and Samuel Yake, and Elijah Ashby; two brothers, David (Linda) Esper of Tennessee and Michael (Connie) Esper of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Barney and Karl Esper.

Frank was born July 19, 1944, to Arthur and Eva Esper, and was raised in the Livonia area. As a young man he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1972, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1969.

He married Lynda Koelzer on June 8, 1968, in East Detroit.

While in the service Frank and Lynda were stationed in Mississippi and the Panama Canal Zone. After settling in the Kalamazoo area with his family in 1973, Frank worked in industrial engineering for many years and also received his master's degree from Western Michigan University.

Frank then moved his family to Otsego, where they lived for 28 years before he and Lynda moved to Zeeland in 2005.

Frank taught courses in electricity at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for 13 years. In 1984 he partnered with Mike Pruis to start a business out of Frank's home called Esper Electric. Esper Electric has grown into a very successful business based in Kalamazoo with over 70 employees.

Frank was a hard-working and honest businessman and was highly respected by his employees and his clients. Frank's passions were his God, his family, his work and sailing. Many have been blessed to share these with him.

His other joys in life were traveling with Lynda, camping with his family and taking every opportunity to learn something new. His love for life and his hope in Jesus spread to everyone who knew him, and he will be remembered fondly for both.

A celebration of Frank's life will take place on Monday, April 24, at Richland Bible Church, 8643 Gull Road. Visitation for family and friends will be between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The service will begin at 1 p.m., with Pastor Larry L. Kiser officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Contributions in Frank's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to World Vision International.

Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, is serving the family.

Walter G. "Mike" Krug, 77

Walter G. "Mike" Krug, 77, of Hopkins Township died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the Allegan County Medical Care Facility. Mr. Krug was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Hopkins, the son of Jacob and Olga (Poppe) Krug.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a 1947 graduate of Hopkins High School, a member of the Hopkins Community Reformed Church and a charter member of the Allegan Draft Horse and Mule Assoc.

He was a dairy farmer for 40 years, an MMPA field inspector for 13 years, and had operated Krug Brother's Milk Hauling for 26 years.

Surviving are his wife June (Davis), whom he married Aug. 31, 1957; three daughters, Beverly Areaux of Hopkins, Carrie Krug of Otsego and Amy and Major Matthew Medlock, USAF, retired, of Florida; nine grandchildren; one brother and one sister, Oscar Krug of Plainwell and Martha Morris of Hopkins; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Krug of Hopkins and Shirley Krug of Dorr; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and best friends, Boots and Goober.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Carl.

Friends will meet with the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 21, at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, www.gordenfuneral.com. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hopkins Community Reformed Church. Pastor Mark Kamper officiating. Interment will follow at Maplewood cemetery, Hopkins Township with military graveside services by the Otsego VFW Post #3030.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hopkins Community Reformed Church Ladies of the Lord or to the Allegan County Medical Care Facility.

Willadean Louis Costen, 80

Willadean Lois Costen, 80, of Otsego passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2006, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Costen was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Sidnaw to Harry and Gladys (Bennett) McIntyre.

She graduated from Kenton High School and for 18 years she was employed with Kalamazoo Paper Co.

Willadean enjoyed summers on the Muskegon River, working jigsaw puzzles and cross stitching.

On June 23, 1951, in Otsego she married George Costen, who died in 1998.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister, Floyd "Swede," Fred and Mildred McIntyre.

Surviving are a brother, Harry (Ruth) McIntyre of Kalamazoo; two nieces, Christine Piner of Trout Creek and Jill Mansfield of Watersmeet; and George's cousin, Tracy (Blanche) Turner of Vandalia, Ohio.

Friends met the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday), April 20, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Pastor Jeffery Boggan officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Home cemetery, Otsego.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Borgess VNA and Hospice Services.

Jean Sinclair (Meck) Topp, 92

Mrs. Jean Sinclair (Meck) Topp, 92, of Gaylord passed away Friday, April 14, 2006. Born in Chicago on July 14, 1913, she was the daughter of Samuel R. and Edna (Sinclair) Meck.

Jean was a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago. She obtained her master's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. While working on her doctorate in microbiology at George Washington, she worked under Dr. Jonas Salk in developing the polio vaccine in the 1930s.

After marrying her husband Elwin, she worked at the Michigan Department of Public Health while he attended medical school. She took a hiatus from work to raise three children. Jean returned to work at Bronson Methodist Hospital and taught microbiology to student nurses at Nazareth College in Kalamazoo.

Jean enjoyed reading, golf and orange pekoe tea. In later life, her six grandchildren were her main joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elwin.

She is survived by her children, Cathrine Topp of Connecticut, Michael (Cindy) Topp of Stongsville, Ohio, and Robert (Susan Hlywa) Topp; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was Tuesday at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Father John McCracken officiating. Family and friends gathered at the funeral home before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.
