BERNARD, KAREN E. (nee Oinas) died suddenly at her home in Quincy, MI on Saturday, May 22, 1999. Born May 19, 1945 in Hancock, MI, she devoted her life to family, music and education. From her early years, Karen was an accomplished pianist with dynamic phrasing and a heavy sustain foot pedal. She accompanied the choirs at her church and high school, and earned a scholarship to spend one summer at the Interlochen Arts Academy. After graduating from Hancock High School as the salutatorian of her class, she attended Northern Michigan University. There, she continued her studies in music, and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. At her commencement ceremonies, Karen received a B.S. with High Honors in Elementary Education. After her graduation, she taught in St. Clair Shores, MI and worked towards her Master s Degree at Oakland University. She married William J. Bernard, Jr. at St. Ignatius Church in Houghton, MI on August 28, 1971. The couple moved to Maumee, OH (later Perrysburg) where Karen continued her career teaching at Washington Local Schools (Horace Mann). Karen began her new career as a mother after the births of William, III (B.J.), Benjamin, and Nanette. Using her experience as an educator, she stimulated and supported her children with each of their endeavors at home, school, and distant fields and ice rinks. Karen is survived by her husband, her three children, several aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law, and eleven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Eleanore Oinas. Friends will be received in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg from 2-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, 1999. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 28, 1999 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul s Lutheran Church, 112 E. Wayne St., Maumee, OH with burial in Fort Meigs cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name to either the St. Ursula Academy or to St. John s Jesuit High School.
